district. a woman shot and killed. what we're hearing from police. but we begin with more winter weather and an important heads up for drivers today. tom says the afternoon commute could turn into a game of slip and slide on the roads. the worst of it may not be on the major roads but right in your neighborhoods. we're driving around this morning and this is what we're seeing. streets still covered already. slick. that's not good news. more snow is on the way, just enough to really put a messy end to your week. good morning and welcome to "news4 today." i'm eun yang. good morning. i'm aaron gilchrist. a list of closures, delays getting longer as the morning goes on. the federal government is open today. but employees again have the option of unscheduled leave or telework and then this just into our newsroom. the west education campus in d.c. closed today because of a power outage. >> in virginia, culpeper, king george, page, stafford, spotsylvania and warren counties are all closed today. orange county and fredericksburg

public schools on a two-hour delay. anne arundel county public schools are doing a two-hour early dismissal this afternoon. that was apparently planned. ahead of the next storm, it's a smart move. tom kierein here with exactly what we should expect today. tom in. >> here we snow again. later today, a similar event like thursday morning. when we got that light snow. enough to cause problems. right now it's frigid had friday morning. we're down into the teens. prince george's county, article ton, fairfax, montgomery counties, down into mid and upper teens. right at reagan national near 20. in the upper teens near the bay. inland, southern maryland got the heavier snow yesterday. it's only around 10 degrees now. hour by hour throughout the day, we'll have thickening clouds through the morning. by 9:00, 10:00. it's going to be in the low 20s. low to mid 20s by noontime. by 3:00, will likely be in the mid and upper 20s. that's where we'll begin to see the snow moving in from the

west. earlier in the mountains. in the metro area by 3:00. between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. we'll have most of the accumulation taking place. there will definitely be slick spots on untreated surfaces by then. all of coming to an end later tonight. danella with a look at traffic. good morning. >> good morning. we'll start with metro. if you're taking the yellow or green lines, expect delays in both directions because of i a switch problem. if you're traveling marc or vre, i'm checking for delays. both rails aren't reporting delays at this time. over to the roadways. seeing delays already as you travel southbound towards clarksburg. let me show you 109. these are the unusual delays. once you pass 121, clarksburg road and continue towards germantown and towards rockville and towards the beltway, travel lanes are open in both directions. that's a nice commute. aaron and eun back to you.

6:02 is your time. watch out for slick roads if you're heading out this morning. some of the neighborhood streets are especially slippery. news 4's tony tull is live in fairfax with more. >> reporter: a lot of the main roads are okay. it's what residents in and around the area are waking up to that is going to be hard to get out of their neighborhoods. i am going to show you something quick. if you look at that intersection, that is route 50. if you look along the street here, this is an andale road. we're at do you shell road in fairfax county. this road is extremely slick, it's icy. i'm standing on it and it's very slippery. you can see down this road, this is a residential neighborhood. i talked to vdot yesterday when we were at the salt dome. they said if it doesn't snow more than 2 inches, they usually don't hit these residential neighborhoods. people are waking up this morning, they're getting conditions like this. very treacherous as they try to make it out of their neighborhoods. we're checking in with folks trying to get an update of what

they are waking up to. if you have any issues getting out of your neighborhood, let us know. we'll continue to stay on this all morning long. back to you. tony tull, thank you. breaking news at this hour, a murderer on the run after shooting a woman in northwest d.c. this morning. this happened about 4:00 this morning right near the intersection of fifth and nicholson streets off missouri avenue in d.c. megan mcgrath on the scene with the latest on the investigation. megan. >> reporter: a few moments ago, the chief medical examiner arrived here on the scene and it appears they'll be moving the body soon. we still have an active scene. investigators trying to piece together what happened. collecting evidence and of course, looking for the gunman who is responsible. this happened around 4:00 this morning. they got a 911 call about a shooting. they found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. here at fifth and nicholson street in northwest washington.

that woman died as a result of the injuries. there's no word of any arrests at this point. still an active investigation and april new investigation. police are asking for help from the public. anyone who may have seen something may have heard something. you're asked to call metropolitan police. reporting live in northwest, megan mcgrath, news 4. back to you in the studio. >> megan, thank you. we're talking about gun violence today in virginia, vice president joe biden joining a roundtable on gun control at vcu in richmond. senator tim kaine, congressman bobby scott and several members of the president's cabinet will also attend that meeting. they will discuss curbing gun violence with experts who worked on gun safety issues in wake of the virginia tech massacre in 2007. we're also learning this morning that president obama will take his first trip outside d.c. since the inauguration. that will happen next week when he heads to las vegas. the president made numerous stops in nevada while campaigning and defeated mitt romney in that state. the white house is not releasing think other details about the trip. mitt romney will be in town

for a rare appearance. he's attending a luncheon hosted by katherine reynolds and hotel magnet bill marriott jr. at the marriott hotel downtown. he's rejoined the board of directors after leaving in 2011 to run for the white house. the former presidential candidate chose not to attend the inauguration monday. the first nominee to do so since michael dukakis in 1989. 6:06 now. d.c. council planning to hear more about a report that police in the district improperly investigated sexual assault cases. news 4 first to report that the human rights watch report that claims that d.c. police routinely mishandled sex assault allegations. the group could not find documents on 170 cases between 2008 and 201. the report is unsubstantiated as claimed by lanier. the justice department set to look at the report. it is 6:06.

take a look at this rare photo. a retired national park service person took this picture in colorado. it shows two lynx. they died out in the '70s. the lynx almost completely vanished from colorado at that time. this picture has gone viral since posted on facebook. we checked. more than 10,000 people have liked this photo of what some have called the ghost cat.

lynx. >> i love the name. we're watching radar right now. some snow that is getting closer to our area. it is going to arrive at a really bad time. this just in. clark county schools in virginia are closed today. tom kierein has the latest on your forecast at 6:11. tom? >> right now, we see that snow, the leading edge pushing into west virginia. does look like that may move into the shenandoah valley perhaps by late this morning. ahead of that, frigid friday morning. down into the low to mid teens in the suburbs and rural areas, prince george's, fairfax and arlington counties. not much of a warm wrup today. mid and upper 20s briefly before the snow moves into the area. then immediate slick spots. as soon as the snow falls, it's going to stick. we'll get an inch maybe in the metro area or less in some locations. the light blue zone. the dark blue zone, the bay,

i'm melissa mollet at the live desk. we're going to go straight to a live picture of what's happening in tahrir square near egypt. clashes breaking out. thousands of people in the streets. you can hear horns honking in the distance. this is the two-year anniversary of the beginning of the uprising there. a local newspaper reporting right now 20 people have been

injured in clashes. mass anti-government protests are expected throughout the day. at the live desk, melissa mollet, news 4. john kerry could be confirmed as secretary of state as early as next week. the full senate could vote on his nomination on tuesday. kerry breezed through his confirmation hearing yesterday. he answered questions from the senate foreign relations committee. he served on the committee for 28 years and is currently its chairman. current secretary of state hillary clinton introduced him. things are looking up for president obama's choice for pentagon chief, chuck hagel earned more support from democrats who had been concerned about his stand on israel. four senators met with him this week and are confident about his commitment to the jewish state. about a dozen democrats now say they'll vote for hagel's nomination as defense secretary. none has said he or she opposes it. six republicans have said they will vote against him. a nagging problem seems to be "bugging" the president.

a fly landed on his forehead during a press conference yesterday. not a good look. he has a history of run-ins with pests. he killed a fly when he sat down for an interview with john harwood. investigators are stumped as to what it causing batteries to burst into flames on boeing's new state-of-the-art plane. all 787 dreamliners remain grounded for now. here's an ominous sign. a battery expert with 40 years of experience says he wouldn't fly on a dreamliner right now if the lithium-ion batteries are on board. we're waiting to hear from the faa about who is to blame for two planes that clipped wings. chopper 4 on the scene yesterday. you can see a little damag there. united airlines flight arriving from brussels hit the wing of another plane parked at the gate. nobody was hurt there. a judge recommending that some of the lawsuits should be dropped against the owner of the colorado movie theater where

people were killed last summer. the federal judge says colorado law bars those wounded and families of those killed from bringing wrongful death claims against cinemark usa. however, they can still sue on under a liability act covering thing like slip and fall injuries. four of those killed in the massacre and several people injured filed suits saying the theater's lax security enabled that shooting. we've seen the face of football star's manti te'o's fake girlfriend. now we're hearing her voice. >> i'll do my best yeah so get your rest and i'll talk to you tomorrow. i love you so much. sweet dreams. >> that was a voice mail message for the person poe posing as his frirl gend. in another twist, we're learning that the voice may not have been

the voice of a woman. several media outlets reporting that it was a man believed to be behind the hoax. new efforts to give disabled students equal access to after school sports. the obama administration plans to send a letter to school districts across the country calling for responsible modifications for students with disabilities. a flashing light that goes off at at the same time as a starting gun for deaf track athletes. 12 states require accommodations. cools that don't comply could risk federal funding. it's been nearly two decades since the caps started the season like this. they dropped their third straight at the verizon center to the montreal canadiens. 4-1. four came within a five-minute span. they committed seven pep penalties for the second straight game. they call it embarrassing. the team has to figure out things quickly.

the website, apple insider said the tech giant filed designs with the trade office last summer. do you want your shoes to tell you -- what if you like the shoes and want them resoled. >> when i can feel water coming in from the bottom, i know i need new shoes. it's time for weather and traffic on the 1s. here's meteorologist tom kierein. >> there is capitol hill under a cloudy sky. the clouds closed in. going forward into this afternoon, by noontime, we'll probably have that light snow moving into the shenandoah valley. all the areas in the lavender, this is the zone of snow. looks like 4:00, well into the western suburbs much washington, much of northern virginia and maryland. between 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., we'll probably get the bulk of the the accumulating snow in the metro area. after 7:00, on the eastern shore. it will quickly exit and clear out. up to an inch across much of virginia.

welcome back at 6:25. incredible video out of australia this morning of a daring water rescue. check this out. a 14-year-old boy was caught in raging floodwaters clinging to a tree. after the rs cue, the water actually swept the firefighter away. he grabbed a bridge and made it safely back on land. there have been more than 20 swift water rescues today in the state of queensland including a woman and two children trapped in a car. all of this rain is coming from a cyclone. a virus first identified last year in australia is spreading fast here in the u.s. now. the cdc says it has tracked more than 140 outbreaks of a noro-virus in the last four months. doctors say this new strain isn't particularly dangerous but people who have it are having a hard time fighting it off. all right. been warned. it's 6:26. 23 degrees. the event that will bring a big section of downtown d.c. to a standstill today. also new this morning, word of a new threat from north

county schools are closed. tom kierein here with exactly what we should expect this afternoon. tom? >> i think we're going to be slipping and sliding heading back home from work and school. temperatures are frigid this friday morning. arlington, fairfax and montgomery counties. right in washington, it's near 20 degrees. much of southern maryland, they got that heavier snow yesterday morning. it's only around ten degrees there now. in the mountains, in the teens as well. to the teens near 20 for a couple of hours. we've had the cloud cover thickening up as it's moving in. some thin spots to the south. leading edge of snow near petersburg, west virginia. that's the leading edge. a lot of it not reaching the ground it's so dry. maybe a few scattered flurries in the shenandoah valley in a couple of hours. into the metro hour, the thickening clouds, i think we'll have the snow right in washington by around 3:00. between 3:00, 6:00 and 7:00, that's the time when we're going to get the accumulating snow. how much? i think we're going to end up with 1 to 3 inches.

danella, thanks so much. tens of thousands of pro life activists will descend on capitol hill for the march for life. the basilica of the -- at catholic university. the main rally begins at noon on the national mall. demonstrators will march to the capitol and supreme court. organizers are expecting a record crowd this year. it marks the 40th anniversary of the supreme court's roe v. wade decision. today's rally could wreak havoc with your trip home this evening if you work downtown. these are some of the road closures caused by the event. take a look. several streets between constitution at independence will be shut down shut down starting at 9:30 this morning. parts of seventh and f streets will also be closed. all streets should be open by 6:30 tonight. it is an extremely rare move for a jury to leave the courtroom and actually see the scene of an actual crime. this is for the trial of daniel

harmon-wright. he's accused in the shooting death of patricia cook last year. he claims self-defense saying she tried to run him over. a witness testified yesterday that the former cop's story was made up. the defense team for executive john leopold will make its case today in his misconduct trial. they intend to argue that leopold's use of his taxpayer funded security detail for personal errands does not amount to a crime. the prosecution rested yesterday after calling more than a dozen witnesses in four days. they included members of his security detail who testified that they ferried the executive to sexual encounters with a county employee. police are looking for a third person behind a gang-related murder of a 16-year-old boy. prince george's county arrested two teens yesterday in the shooting death of 16-year-old marcus jones. 17-year-old akil ings and 19-year-old kquantae fisher gunned down jones outside of a party in ft. washington because of gang rivalry.

jones was a sophomore at friendly high school. a former maryland delegate is in critical condition after being pulled from her burning home. firefighters say 83-year-old christine jones was not breathing when they found her during this raging fire in temple hills yesterday. she did regain consciousness at the hospital. jones is the first african-american to represent prince george's county in the maryland general assembly. firefighters are still investigating this fire. but they say it started in her bedroom. >> 6:35 now. there is a new push on capitol hill to make d.c. the nation's 51st state. delaware senator tom carper and three other democratic senators are sponsoring a bill giving the district full statehood. the legislation is not expected to pass. but many say it is a promising sign that support for statehood is growing. last week there was a similar bill introduced in the house naming d.c. the new columbia. we've learned the senate will vote next monday on a bill that could send billions of dollars in aid to sandy's

victims. if passes, states affected could get more than $50 billion in federal aid. some fiscal conservatives could complicate things. they say the bill will add to the national debt. they want spending cuts in other places to offset that relief package. you can expect fewer filibusters in the senate. democrats and republicans reached an agreement wred to curb their use of that delay tactic. the rule changes reduce the number of times minority parties can use filibusters. in return, they have to allow two minority amendments on bills. it is now 6:36. 23 degrees out there. we have breaking news. a deadly shootingment a woman gunned down. we're talking with police. an update on the scene ahead. more snow is inching ever closer to our area. >> that's not good news for a lot of people waking up to roads that look like this one. a sheet of slick snow and ice. we're looking for the problem spots that await you. you remember this wild video? not really wild, i guess. it's real. it was

i'm melissa mollet at the live desk. we're getting this into the newsroom. an nbc news producer on the ground in cairo say clashes there are intensifying. she reports a tear gas bomb thrown by police was tossed back by a young boy. right now, this is all happening near tahrir square on the two-year anniversary of the uprising there. at least 20 people have been hurt in clashes and anti-government protests are expected all day long. at the live desk, melissa mollet, news 4. ah! remember this video we showed you wednesday morning of what appears to be a photographer's near miss with an airplane. this morning we can pass along that the individual wrvideo is staged. it was structured and rehearsed.

it was not an accident. investigators are not taking it lightly. the faa is now investigating. >> they should have said it was a fake. >> you think? >> now they're going to be in trouble. that's right. 6:41. let's take a look at what we can expect weatherwise today. tom kierein is here with the forecast. >> no problems weather wise outside of the streets compacted with snow. time for weather and traffic on the 1s. right now at 6:41, we're off to a frigid start. most locations are into the teens. throughout the day today, we'll have it stay in teens for another couple of hours. by noontime, in the low 20s. here's the temperature scale, the time scale. we'll be into the upper 20s around 1:00 or 2:00. once we get snow falling in the metro area, 3:00, 4:00, the temperatures will drop back to the low 20s. that's when we'll get the accumulating snow. that will cause slippery conditions on untreated surfaces. could get up to an inch. all the areas in light blue. the dark blue areas, 1 to 2 inches much up to 3 inches. a few isolated spots near the

the hunt for a killer. near fifth and nicholson streets. news 4's megan mcgrath there with the latest. megan in. >> reporter: aaron, a short time ago the medical examiner removed the body of the victim that had been on the scene for several hours. several investigators -- we have the police tape crossing fifth street, still closed at this time. i was just told by metro transit officer that the expectation is that it would be a few more hours yet before this crime scene tape is taken down. now this happened right around 4:00 in the morning. police found the woman on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. at the intersection right at the corner of fifth and nicholson. she died here on the scene. no word of any arrests at this point. still an open investigation. police are trying to talk to some of the people who live on this block to see if they heard or saw anything of use that could help in tracking down the

gunman responsible. mo information on the victim. we're told that she is an adult female. no name has been released. but obviously, police looking for help from the public with respect to this investigation. but one woman died early this morning here. should also mention that there is this detour in place. apparently there's a bus stop on the corner. they're going to be detouring buses to a different street here. i was told that they're expecting that that detour will remain in place for several hours this morning. reporting live in northwest, megan mcgrath, news 4. aaron, back to you. >> megan, thank you. new this morning, we've just learned of a new threat from north korea. this time it is directed at south korea. the north warned that it will take "physical countermeasures if the south helps to enforce measures against pong pyongyang. it's ready to wage a full fledged confrontation against the u.s. for what calls continued hostility. in just a few hours, vice president joe biden heads to

richmond to join a roundtable aimed at curbing gun violence. being held at virginia commonwealth university. va'a senator tim kaine and congressman bobby scott and several members of the president's cabinet will also attend. they're going to discuss gun control with experts who have worked on gun safety issues in that state in the wake of the virginia tech massacre in 2007. now, the nra is out with a survey this morning that it says shows the true view that gun owners have on the current gun control debate. the gun lobby polled 1,000 of its own members. they say that 91% support laws keeping firearms out of the hands of the mentally ill. but 93% also oppose a law requiring them to register their guns with the federal government. the nra says the first survey to accurately represent gun owners. president obama will travel outside the district for the first time of his -- for his second term next week. he is headed to las vegas. the president made numerous stops in nevada while campaigning and defeated mitt

romney in that state. the white house is not releasing any details about the trip. today mitt romney will be in d.c. for a luncheon hosted by two of his biggest campaign fundraisers. philanthropist katherine rein old and bill mayor jot jr. are hosting at the j.w. marriott hotel downtown. romney rejoined the board of directors of the hotel after leaving to run for the white house. the former presidential candidate chose not to attend the inauguration. the first one to do so since 1989. sentenced to prison for leaking the name of a covert operative to a reporter. john care could you has agreed to spend more than two years behind bars. he and his supporters say the government is punishing him for speaking out against torture the cia conducted. prosecutors though say he was really after fame and fortune. in the day ahead, punishment time for one of the men who killed a d.c. school principal.

he was charged with killing brian betts. betts was the principal at shaw middle school in northwest. betts met one of the suspects online and they planned to rob him. lancaster could get life sentence without the possibility of parole. had morning, the d.c. council planning to hear more about a report that police in the district improperly investigated sexual assault cases. news 4 was first to report the human rights watch report that claims the d.c. police routinely mishandled sexual assault allegations. the group says it couldn't find documents on 170 cases between 2008 and 2011. but metro police chief kathy lanier claims the report is unsubstantiated. she says that reports of sexual abuse are actually up 51 mers from 2011 to 2012. the justice department also set to look at that report. parts of virginia governor bob mcdonnell's education reform plan is closer to becoming reality. there is a mess measure passed requiring teacher and principal

evaluations every year. teachers and principals would also be able to be fired after one bad review. the commonwealth's largest teacher organization oppose a similar bill last year because it would have ended teacher tenure. the bill leaves tenure intact. filling your gas tanks in maryland could get more expensive. thomas miller is proposing to let counties raise the gas tax by as much as five cents. the money would fund transportation projects. maryland already tacks on a 23.5 cent per gallon but it hasn't gone up since 1992. miller is proposing a 3% statewide sales tax on gas to generate $300 million. money concerns are blamed for pushing the retirement age up. cnbc's kayla tausche is live with that. kayla, good morning. >> kayla is going to join us very soon to tell us a little bit more on that in business headlines. first, more americans are putting off retirement. new census data shows the share of people 65 and older in the

workforce rose from 12.1% in 1990 to 16.1% in 2010. the increase was even larger for women. more than 40% of people 65 and older are working full-time year round. the census projects the older working population will grow by two-thirds by 2040 when one in five americans will be at least 65 years old. a survey by the employee benefit research institute finds that 13% of people who delay retirement say they're doing so because they can't afford to stop working. consumers may score big on super bowl tv deals. prices on big flat scene tvs have steadily dropped. it's become cheaper for companies to make them. price tracking site decide.com says you typically see a 10 to 15% drop in the weeks leading up to the big game. the trade-off, though, you're largely buying last year's leftovers. manufacturers show off the newest sets at the consumer

virginia. the snow zone. here's washington, does look like that will be in washington by around 3:00 or 4:00. then that snow moving right through the metro area. some of the heavier amounts of snow coming down at a pretty good clip. may leave about an inch or so around the metro area. it's going to be quickly exiting. leaving in its wake, generally up to an inch of snow across most of virginia and maryland and the district. these areas east of washington, prince george's county, anne arundel, st. charles, could get 1 to 2 inches, as well as the counties east of the bay on the eastern shore. other areas, heavier snow will likely be falling out of the mountains. panhandle of west virginia into western maryland. over 2 inches there. it's going to be lingering longer way out in the highlands of western maryland, west virginia, where they could get up to 6 inches by the time it ends on saturday morning. all of it in the metro area, ending by 8:00 or 9:00 this evening. back on -- frigid mornings in

she had to take them to school. now she'll be late to work. it does look unassuming. it looks like a little bit of snow. guys, i want to show you something. this is a camera bag that the photographers use to store things. you can see it's nonslip. you can see when we throw it down there. how far it slides. this is absolutely nothing but ice. if you are headed out this morning in northern virginia, parts of fairfax, be extra careful. you can see behind me down there, if you go off the road, that's a creek down there. even though people urged to take cause, it doesn't take a lot to have a dangerous condition here. that lady this morning, she is absolutely upset about the conditions here. like i said, fairfax county -- vdot said if it's not more than 2 inches, they won't come through neighborhoods. make sure if you're headed out of the house this morning, especially if you have kids, use caution and put a little buffer on your time there. guys, you can see how that bag slid down the road.
