right now in our region, another very cold morning, and there is still more snow on the ground, but we have a big first in the forecast we haven't seen in nearly a week. welcome to the weekend, everyone. good morning. i'm angie goff. >> and i'm richard jordan. we're following breaking news this morning. police are searching for a gunman who opened fire at a northeast d.c. nightclub. five wepeople were hit, all of

them went to the hospital. police say a man went to the club and just opened fire. three men and two women were shot. they were all alive when rescuers took them to the hospital. it's expected to be another chilly day in our area. our most recent inch or so of snow came through very quickly, and the winter weather came right as many of you tried to make that evening drive home. plow trucks stayed busy trying to get the salt down. this morning you'll find roads passable and the snow mainly on the gross. >> a live look right now at the roads. crews are working around the clock to make sure state roads state clear. state troopers say they responded to nearly 250 traffic crashes statewide friday evening. they also helped out about 175 drivers stranded on the side of the road. >> we have meteorologist kim standing in for chuck this morning. looks like the cold is sticking with us. >> it is. we even have a few leftover flurries. good morning, everybody.

it's a cold one. check out the numbers. we have some low 20s, even some teens. as you travel up 270 gaithersburg, it is 17. what we have are a few snowflakes here and there coming on down. nothing sticking too heavy. nothing super heavy. we have to go to prince william county where we find a few. if you're traveling along 95 between fredericksburg and the mixing bowl, a few flurries this morning. coming up, i'll tell you when this stuff is going to leave and what the rest of the weekend weather has in store for u. today guns will be the subject of a demonstration here in washington. thousands are expected for today's march on washington for gun control. around 10:00 this morning, demonstrators will march in silence from the capitol to the washington monument. at least 2,500 from around the country are in town from this event.

leading the march will be several people from newtown, connecticut, where several children and six adults were killed. if you're heading downtown, be advised the march starts at the reflecting pool and progresses down constitution avenue for several blocks before turning toward the washington monument for the rally and speeches. organizers of the march for life campaign believe more than 400,000 people gathered in the district for an anti-abortion protest. the demonstration coincides with the 40th anniversary of roe versus wade, the supreme court decision that legalized abortion. groups came from across the country with pro-life signs and shirts. they say they'll never stop fighting against abortion. despite the new massive protest, a new nbc wall street journal

poll shows 70% of americans agree with the law. starting at 8:00 this morning, westbound arlington boulevard will be closed. follow 15th to wilson boulevard. the highway should reopen by 8:00 tomorrow night. traffic to and from courthouse road will be detoured through august as crews rebuild that bridge. one man is behind bars this morning charged with shooting and killing an 18-year-old in northwest d.c. we now know this was not a random attack. here's the story. >> i was more angry than sad. >> reporter: genesis nunez is filled with pain. her close friend was murdered. >> she didn't deserve. >> reporter: we've learned d.c. police arrested 21-year-old alexander buckley. detectives say he shot and

killed her. police say the two knew each other, but they haven't released details about their relationship. >> do you know how she knew this guy? was he a boyfriend, a relative? >> i don't know how he -- >> reporter: she had just graduated from montgomery blair high school many silver spring. she had a big heart for her family and friends. >> she always kept people laughing no matter what. she would go -- she was always on to something. something was always happening. she was always happy. >> buckley could make his first court appearance as early as today. redskins offensive tackle trent williams will not play in tomorrow's pro bowl after getting hurt in a nightclub brawl. espn is reporting williams was hit with a champagne bottle and needed stitches, and he was tasered. police say williams did not start the fight, though. two men did have to go to the hospital. officers arrested one man and are investigating five others

the company pushed its way back to the top over tech giant apple which has declined since a recent report said the fast growth was ending. the two have gone back and forth as the top company several times in the past few years. apple had been number one for about a year. may the force be with j.j. abrams. a disney spokesperson says abrams is, quote, the perfect director for this project. he has quite an impressive resume, if you look at it. abrams created "lost" and directed hits like "mission impossible iii." the new "star wars" is set to come out in 2015. >> you're excited. >> i have a light saber. >> of course you do. >> well, i have a 2-year-old. >> blame it on the 2-year-old. up next, a quirky update on bruce reynolds. and just how good are the

it appears virginia electoral map for presidential elections will stay the same for now. >> governor bob mcdonald says he's against changing the format. the proposed change would replace the winner take all method that awards one vote to the winner of each congressional district. this system was in place this past november, president obama would have lost to mitt romney in virginia despite winning the state's popular vote. democrats oppose the change saying it was a power play to rig elections. republicans are already planning their strategy for the 2014 elections.

>> that's right. but it appears they're fighting an uphill battle. a new poll shows 49% view the gop unfavorably compared to just 26% who have a positive view. the democrats are doing much better with a 44% favorability rating compared to a 34% unfavorability. former mississippi governor haley barber says it will take some work, but the gop will bounce back. >> we have a lot of work to do. we have some cleaning up to do. we have some making up to do. we have some stretching out to do to bring some people in. >> gop leaders say they'll continue to push low-tax policies that stress growth in the small business sector. the supreme court may have to discuss whether some of president obama's appointments to the national labor relations board were unconstitutional. the federal appeals court ruled yesterday the president did not have the power to bypass the senate and make three appointments last year during a

recess. yesterday's decision could affect the appointment of the head of the newly formed consumer protection bureau. this morning, actor burt reynolds is in the hospital battling a bad case of the flu. he's said to be in intensive care at a florida hospital. he appears to be on the road to recovery, however. his manager released a statement saying the doctors are taking care of him and his mustache. and this year's flu season is still a major concern across the country. the centers for disease control and prevention says it's spreading now in the west. here in the east, flu levels appear to be leveling off a bit. new research shows a sweet treat might be the key to getting over that flu. nbc's erica edwards takes a look at a simple home remedy in news for your health. >> reporter: while many swear by antiviral medicines, you have to

crazy, but you know how it goes on i-95. just gets crazy out there. it's great to see you. maybe you'll just take it easy, read the paper in bed, join us, and we'll get you through your morning. let's start with a look around and talk about the cold weather. a few flakes. you know, it is january after all. there was this crazy statistic last night. we've been below freezing since midnight monday night going into tuesday. is that nuts or what? what i can tell you also that's great is we're probably going to go at or above freezing as we think about this afternoon. 26 is the number. we've got a northwest wind pushing you along at 6 miles an hour. not too windy, but there are a couple flakes here and there. let's look at some metro numbers. we're in the deep freeze in gaithersburg. that's 19. kind of cold. as we expand our view, north and

west the cold weather lingers. up there in hagerstown, along i-81. we have 27 in fredericksburg. southern maryland, you're coming in with 27 degrees as well. there's no winter weather advisory in effect. if you're headed out to deep creek, they have lots of trails and lifts open out there. this winter storm warning goes until 7:00 tonight with more inches of the white stuff. if you want to lay down some fresh tracks in the snow, it's a great time to go. just bundle up. it's going to be really cold out there. here's a check at the scattered flurries and snow showers around this morning. we'll take you out to prince william county. there will be a few flakes falling, nothing heavy. along i-95 around quantico, down to fredrik burg, we have a few more and extend into the northern neck of virginia. all right. so the highs today going to be

at chevron, if we can't do it right, we won't do it at all. we've got to think long term. we've got to think long term. ♪ virginia attorney general is being called a hero for saving a truck driver from her flaming big rig. it happened yesterday afternoon along i-64. he was returning to richmond when he saw a semi truck whose back tires were on fire. he got the driver's attention and discovered she had an injury and couldn't move very well. he got her out of the cab, grabbed a fire extinguisher, and

put that fire out. the woman, who is from kentucky, said she had no idea virginia's attorney general helped to save her. there's a reason people call him super mayor. newark, new jersey, mayor cory booker is making headlines this morning. thursday night someone tweeted booker letting him know there was a dog outside wandering on a frigid night. booker and police went over to the scene and caught the dog. the dog had apparently just had puppi puppies and somehow got out. booker has made quite a name for himself. he constantly talks to residents on twitter. just last year, he saved a neighbor from a burning home. 6:26 right now. new from overnight, we're on top of breaking news next. the shooting at a d.c. club that sent five people to the hospital. plus, a roller coaster weekend weatherwise. kim is back to break down the highs and the lows you're going to feel over the next few days. also ahead, how a new art exhibit in the district is making a powerful statement on gun control. you're watching news

good morning, everyone. welcome to news 4 today. i'm richard jordan. >> and i'm angie goff. it is saturday, january 26th, 2012. we begin with breaking news. police are investigating a shooting in northeast d.c. that sent five people to the hospital. it happened at the d.c. sound stage near 26th street. police say a man went into the club and opened fire. three men and two women were shot. rescuers found one victim inside the club hiding trying to stay safe. we're told everyone was conscious and breathing when taken to the hospital. our area is waking up to more than to chilly temperatures, but we're definitely not the only place getting a visit from old man winter. >> much of the country is seeing ice, snow, and bitter cold temperatures. nbc's jay grey has the story. >> reporter: harsh and in some

places unbearable winter conditions continue to take their toll in dozens of communities across the country right now. a thick sheet of ice has covered and crippled parts of tennessee. in pennsylvania, high winds and freezing temperatures formed ice dunes over the waters of lake erie. just outside of boston, single digit temperatures have left lakes and waterfalls frozen solid. in ohio, a blanket of snow is causing the biggest problems. plows are working overtime. while cars are barely working at all. the brutal conditions in so many places mean big business for tow truck operators and repair shops. >> we usually average about 80 calls in the summertime. we're doing about 200 now. >> reporter: in chicago, flakes fell for the first time in 355 days a record drought when it comes to snow in the windy city. unwilling to wait, will white

sentenced to prison for a violent day care attack, police released surveillance video of the incident. michael young seen in the khakis here attacked a security guard at a landover day care center. prosecutors say he became violent after not being allowed inside to use the phone. young was sentenced yesterday to 20 years in prison. police believe he was high on pcp when he attacked. a virginia man will be in court on monday charged with murdering his 15-month-old son. police arrested him yesterday. they say he took out multiple life insurance policies on his son. his son drowned last october. his mother was fighting against allowing unsupervised visitation. today you might want to give yourself a little extra time if you use met rmetro. crews are working on the red

line. on the green line, there's single tracking between college park and greenbelt as crews build a test track for the new rail cars. on the orange line, you can expect delays as crews test the new silver line. riders can expect delays of about 20 minutes because of single tracking between east falls churnl and west falls church. there's also single tracking between stadium armory and cheverly. branch avenue in prince george's county could soon be the site of a major makeover. the board discovered the area has too much commercial zoning. the proposal now goes to the county council. they're expected to approve that plan by march. and the time right now is 6:36. how local artists hope to get your attention with a provocative exhibit now on display. zblchblt and a man's impressive move that got quite the response from lebron james. you're watch

a florida man is facing serious charges after dragging a sheriff's deputy from his car. the deputy was trying to arrest the man for shoplifting when the suspect tried to drive off. the suspect dragged the deputy 20 feet before he was able to get loose. luckily, the suspect dropped his wallet so police were able to go directly to his house and arrest him. the deputy was taken to the hospital with a head injury, but is expected to be okay. closing arguments will begin monday in the case of a former culpepper police officer charged with murder. daniel harmon wright took the stand yesterday. he's accused of killing 34-year-old patricia cook. harmon wright, who was investigating a suspicious vehicle report, said he was afraid cook was going to try to kill him with her car. he was let go from the police force last june after he was

indicted. police are releasing new details about the victim of a deadly crash yesterday in d.c. a woman crashed her suv into an ambulance. the impact flipped the suv, which caught fire, killing the woman. the crash pushed an ambulance into another car. two paramedics in the ambulance and two people in the other car are all expected to be okay. in wisconsin, radio listeners are hearing an unusual message. it's an ad from the milwaukee county sheriff urging residents to attend gun training. >> with officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option. you can beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or fight back. are you prepared? consider taking a certified safety course in handling a firearm so you can defend yourself until we can get there. you have a duty to protect yourself and your family. >> the ad aired at least once this week and is also posted on the sheriff's website. many, including the head of the

deputy sheriffs association, say the ad is a way to encourage people to be more individuvigil. a north dakota hockey team is raffling off hundreds of guns. they'll raffle off 200 gun, including a semiautomatic and hard to find weapons. each ticket is only $40. so far, it's been pretty popular. they hope to raise $90,000 before all of this is said and done. here in d.c., a proactive art exhibit about gun violence just opened in a small gallery off logan circle. it's called the newtown project, a call to arms. the owner understands the pain of violence. and the exhibit is designed to be piercing. >> reporter: children's building blocks splattered with blood, a gun pressed into someone's temple, a child's image across

the u.s. constitution, his feet blown off. charles krauss says these images are supposed to make you react, maybe even recoil. >> it is provocative. that's what art is meant to do. art is meant to make people think. >> reporter: krauss, a former journalist, has felt the pain of a bullet wound. he was traveling with congressman leo ryan in jonestown in 1978. jim jones' followers opened fire on them on the airstrip, killing the congressman. >> i've been shot with a gun similar to the kinds of guns they used in newtown. >> reporter: 35 years later, this exhibit is a direct response to the newtown, connecticut, massacre and the gun control debate it has spawned. >> our trauma is spawned individually. >> reporter: this local artist did work that's called simply "lost." >> look for the light which comes from leonard cohen's

>> thanks. virginia lawmakers are taking aim at cigarette smuggling in the state. lawmakers want to impose oese hr penalties. they say smugglers can buy hundreds or thousands of cartons and resell them for cheaper in other states. state offices and university buildings in maryland will one day have an unusual power source. they agreed on a deal yesterday that will bring power to the buildings with chicken waste. the proposed power plant will use chicken waste as its primary fuel source. the university agreed to buy electricity from that plant. the 15-year, $80 million deal will help reduce waste in the chesapeake bay. as we know, we can expect another cold day today. the winter weather has brought out the full range of emotions for people in our area. some hate the snow and ice while others embrace these cold

this afternoon, we're looking to finally get above the freezing mark for the first time since midnight tuesday. it's been quite a while, 100 hours or more. i didn't feel like adding all them up. so we are due. it's great to see you. the snow and the cold, perfect combination for skiing. let's lay down some tracks off to our west and look at the ski report. wisp has 25 trails open. snowshoe, 44 trails. winter green, 19. liberty mountain, i used to drive right past that place going north on 15. all their trails are open. happy skiing, but bundle up because it is awfully cold outside. let's lock at these snow showers. we have a couple this morning. the most consistent band i can find is prince william county. over here it's coming down. pretty much remington and

manassas. it is straddling 95 in the greater quantico area near woodbridge. if you're going to be traveling today, that road spray is going to get on your windshield. make sure you can clear it off easily. here's the south part of the beltway. maybe a few clouds and a stray flurry. not too heavy there. the numbers coming in show you lots of 20s and a couple teens. 19 in gaithersburg. it's 23 in huntingtown. the forecast today takes everybody up to around or above the freezing mark. we'll put on the brakes below freezing in fredericksburg. it stays cold, but above freezing for daytime highs.
