new this morning, a d.c. nightclub turns violent as a gunman opens fire. plus a very cold morning and there's still snow on the ground. but we have a big first in the forecast that we haven't seen in nearly a week. good morning, everyone. welcome to news 4 today. i'm angie goff. >> and i'm richard jordan. time to get a check on our forecast. >> guess what? we have kim martucci out there braving the cold. she's in for chuck bell this morning. how is it feeling? >> reporter: i'm in need of one of these. because i'm braving the cold. hold on. i have to hop out of the shot. i'll be right back.

this snow is bad snowball snow. it doesn't squish. boy, it's cold. you should wear a glove. all right. let's take a look around. maybe you're going skiing. we've got some great skiing weather for you. look at all the trails open at our local resorts. looking great, wisp. 25 trails open. got to love it. even this morning we still have a few renegade snow showers in western fairfax county. you can see it out there along 66. it's not heavy, and it shouldn't really slow you down. although, you should be driving slowly with the black ice. today we're going to probably kiss or get above the freezing mark. that's the big headline. i have to talk about when i see you guys next, some tricky monday morning commute weather. hello, we've done this so many times this season. we can't seem to get a big snowstorm. just lots of little ones around the commute. it's getting rather annoying. see you in a bit. >> all right, kim.
9:32 am
thank you. we're following a developing story out of northeast d.c. five people are recovering this morning after a gunman opened fire at a nightclub. the shooting happened just after 2:00 this morning at the d.c. sound stage club in the 2400 block of benning road northeast. three men and two women were hit. they're all expected to be okay. investigators say a man walked to the front of the club and simply opened fire. police are still in the hunt for that gunman. today, residents from the town of newtown, connecticut, will be here in d.c. to help promote stricter gun control laws. they'll lead thousands for today's march on washington for gun control. in about half an hour, demonstrators will begin marching in silence from the capitol reflecting pool, up constitution avenue, and ending at the washington monument. at least 2,500 people are expected. perhaps no one has promoted the white house's new gun proposals more than vice president joe biden. yesterday biden made his way to virginia to appeal to lawmakers, many of whom support gun rights, about preventing violence.
9:33 am
>> reporter: mental health took center stage at this gun violence round table with an ambitious goal announced by the vice president. >> detect earlier than later those folks who would have the propensity to engage in the kind of activity -- >> reporter: background checks also highlighted. the vice president said universal checks could happen as soon as gun buyers swipe their credit cards. >> you essentially swipe your card, they swipe it for you, in effect, and find out whether you're part of the prohibited class of people. >> reporter: but virginia state lawmakers ended all hopes of enacting background checks for gun sales last week, defeating the proposal in committee. senator kaine condemned the move. >> we believe in the existing laws that bar people from certain weapons, you have to support background checks. >> reporter: critic says they don't want the government to have too much information on who owns guns and where they travel.
9:34 am
>> the meeting in richmond was just one of several round tables the vice president will host over the coming days. biden said he picked virginia first because of the large number of gun supporters. hours after a man was sentenced to prison for a violent day care attack, police released surveillance video of that incident. michael young attacked a security guard with a baseball bat last april at a landover day care center. prosecutors say he became violent after not being allowed in to use the phone. young was sentenced yesterday to 20 years in prison. police believe he was high on pcp when he attacked. a virginia man will be in court on monday charged with murdering his 15-month-old son. police arrested joaquin rams yesterday. they say he took out multiple life insurance policies on his son prince. prince drowned last october. his mother was fighting against allowing rams unsupervised visitation. he's currently being held without bond at the prince william detention center.
9:35 am
today you might want to give yourself a little extra time if you're planning to use metro. crews are working on the red line this weekend, meaning trains will run on a single track between farragut north and judiciary square. there's also single tracking on the green line between college park and greenbelt. riders can expect delays of about 20 minutes because of single tracking between east falls church and west falls church. there's also some single tracking between stadium-armory and cheverly for platform work. up next, a sheriff's new radio ad urging people to use a gun. and a traffic stop makes a dramatic turn when the driver tries to get away. the critical clue left behind that helped track him down. and a hockey team's fundraiser that is turning heads. just wait until you hear what they're raffling off. you're watching news 4 today.

in wisconsin, some radio listeners are hearing a very unusual message. the milwaukee county sheriff has taken to the radio to urge listeners to attend gun training. >> with officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option. you can beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back, but are youprepared? consider taking a certified safety course in handling a firearm. >> that ad aired at least once this week, and it's also posted on the sheriff's website. many, including the head of the deputy sheriffs association, have called it a call to vigilanteism. a north dakota hockey team is holding an unusual fundraiser. they're raffling off hundreds of guns. the fargo hockey association will raffle off 200 guns, including semiautomatic and hard to find weapons. each ticket costs $40. so far it's been pretty popular. they hope to raise $90,000 before all is said and done. here in d.c. a provocative

them, killing the congressman. >> i've been shot with a gun similar to the kinds of guns they used in newtown. >> reporter: 35 years later, this exhibit is a direct response to the newtown, connecticut, massacre and the gun control debate it has spawned. >> i think our trauma is born individually and very differently. >> reporter: this local artist did a work that's called simply "lost." >> there's pierce words that says look for the light, which comes from leonard cohen's wonderful piece "anthem." it talks about in every door there's a crack of light. from this dark loss we can look into the light and find the future. >> reporter: and for one artist, this debate is not for or against. >> i was brought up using guns. >> reporter: brian petro comes from a family of hunters in central pennsylvania. >> i think we need to think about what is the proper use and improper use. >> reporter: american art has often been vocal and radical, and krauss says "a call to arms"

is supposed to be openly political, to motivate public opinion, stir the debate, a constitutional conversation arguing about the second amendment with the freedoms of the first. and no one gets muffled. >> some powerful pictures there. the exhibit is free. the art is for sale. most of the proceeds will go towards groups pushing for gun control. you can find the details on nbcwashington.com. all you have to do is search newtown project. it is a cold weekend. so what better way to spend it than jumping into freezing cold water? two polar plunges are set for this weekend. this morning, hundreds are expected to leap into the potomac near winter harbor. they're trying to draw attention to climate change. then members of the rockville police department will jump into the chesapeake near annapolis. that raises money for the special olympics. both events go down around 11:00

this morning. do you know what the water temperature will be like? >> i don't want to know. >> not as cold as 32. i don't think it's frozen over. it's warmer than the air temperature, if that's enticing at all. what would they have to do to get either one of you to do that? what would they have to put in the water? >> you'd have to tie me up, biebind me, and throw me in. there's no way i'd volunteer. i would sink to the bottom. >> no, you'd float. you're buoyant there. little baby boy, right? >> yes, little boy. >> that's awesome. okay. good morning, everybody. it's cold outside. today marks another consecutive morning of below freezing temperatures. the difference between today and every day this week since tuesday is that we are probably going to get at or above freezing by a degree. that's some good news, right? it's great to see you. we've had a few snowflakes out and about this morning. nothing adding up too much. very fluffy snow, i'm hearing, from my twitter friends.
9:49 am
it's just adding on top of that dusting we got yesterday. 28 is the number. winds out of the north. very light. 3 miles an hour. so we have this morning's flurry activity. as i mentioned, we'll be getting above freezing for the first time since midnight tuesday. more numbers from around the region show lots of 20s on the map, whether you're in winchester or laplata. one exception to the north in hagerstown. you have 19. fredericksburg is the other exception in the other direction. 31 degrees this morning. you had a few flakes down here. they have since wrapped themselves up. we'll zoom into a couple places. this stuff is falling apart. don't be surprised if we get a flurry or two north and west in the mountains today. out here they still have that winter storm warning until 7:00. ski country is doing quite well. the rest of us, take note,

manassas. that's a high of 34, something you haven't seen in a long time. perhaps 33 in d.c. let's focus on the forecast. the weekend is cold, but at least it's dry. you can kind of get some stuff done outside. if you wash the car, you're probably not going to get your money's worth. the reason why is because monday morning's commute is in jeopardy of some rain. this is warmer air that's going to be riding into cold air. the warm air has moisture with it. notice monday's high is 41. this will have changed over to rain. then we look ahead in the seven-day forecast. what's next after that monday morning hiccup? beautiful weather for tuesday, my pick of the week, a high of 60. tuesday night's low, 50. that's a low temperature on tuesday night going into wednesday morning. and then as we think about wednesday, we're going to be about 20 degrees above average with heavy rain possible coming in the afternoon. that would affect your evening
9:51 am
