thousands march the mall for gun control, calling for

action after the tragedy in newtown, connecticut. good evening, everyone. support for today's rally grew on social media after the sandy hook school shooting in december and several newtown residents were among those marching from the capitol to the washington monument. derrick ward spoke to one of them and other demonstrators on both sides of the gun debate. there was the victim from virginia tech. i was shot four times that morning. >> reporter: there the father of this boy killed in a high school shooting in ohio. >> i never stop feeling the pain. >> reporter: a resident for newtown. >> not as much as when it hit home. >> reporter: and a protester who says her right to arms is victimized. >> my sign is about how gun rights protect us from tyranny. >> reporter: there were many signs as thousands of gun control supporters marched and rallied, signs of mourning, signs of defiance. the people behind the quickly organized march and rally say it

serves as a warning to the gun lobby. >> if lawmakers thought they were scared of us coming here, they're going to be scared of moms that aren't going to rest until we get action. >> reporter: moms and dads and brothers and sisters left the latest set of survivors of yet another mass shooting, the march they say is for them. >> to stand with you until we vindicate your children and those who died with them. >> reporter: some said it was because of people carrying automatic weapons that these folks could demonstrate and express their opinions publicly. the organizers say that's exactly their point. this congressman on the feinstein bill that he supports. >> to ban the sale of military style assault weapons. these are weapons that are designed for the battlefield. >> safety is also as important as the right to own a gun. no one is trying to take your guns away. >> reporter: and the march was also about hope, ironic lit flip side of that, how will you take my gun sign hinted at maybe

reasoned debate. the obama administration launched a public push for stiffer gun laws. we'll tell why you democrats could stand in the way of the president's efforts. let's turn to the weather. almost felt balmy out there today compared to last week. kim is in for chuck tonight. did we make it above freezing today? >> we absolutely did. we did it with some degrees to spare, i'm happy to say. and tomorrow will be the same if not a little milder. but we have some hiccups to talk b first, a couple of snow showers out there this evening. nothing heavy. they have been reported here and there, especially in our western suburbs. we're zooming in towards fairfax county and into west springfield. this is right around the rolling road and old keen mill intersection by that whole foods and then back up towards fairfax and north and west into leesburg. again, a couple of snow showers. but nothing heavy and we're not going to see them stick around tomorrow. look at that. some of us are going to be in the upper 30s.

we'll talk about some tricky weather, though, monday morning's commute. we've got a few headaches in this forecast and a big warmup, too. all that coming up in just a bit. >> okay, kim. developing on capitol hill tonight, long time democratic senator tom harkin will not run for re-election in 2014. that sets up a likely battle f his seat. the iowa lawmaker has been in congress for nearly 40 years. first as a representative and then five terms as a senator. he's considered one of the more progressive members. he helped pass the americans with disabilities act and president obama's health care law. harkin says he would be 81 by the time his sixth term ends and says it's time to step aside. at least 30 people killed in violent protests to day in egypt. these deaths come after the verdict in one of the worst soccer riots. 21 rioters were sentenced to death. shortly after the verdict, violence erupted. but outside the court in cairo,

families and friends of the 74 people killed in last year's riot actually celebrated. these clashes come after a night of anti-government protests across the country. yesterday marked the second anniversary of the egyptian revolution. here at home, a manassas man charged with the murder of his 15-month-old son. he is accused of drowning the boy during a court ordered visit in october. his mother says the visits should never have happened. news 4's darcy spencer spoke to the boy's mother today about the arrest and what comes next. darcy? >> reporter: imjjim, the little boy's mom is relieved about the arrest but she wants those that allowed this to happen to be accountable. she sat down with an interview as police were still investigating the case. joakim rams charged with first-degree murder in the death of his 15 yelled-year-old son. authorities say the little boy drowned in his home last october. >> i had always dreamed i was going to be dancing with him on

his wedding day. and he's never going to have one. >> reporter: this is the little boy's mom. she says after she left rams due to alleged abuse, she fought to keep her son from having unsupervised visits with his father. >> this is something that absolutely could have been prevented. >> she says that the montgomery county family judge grantsed him unsupervised visits. and on the fourth saturday visit she got the call that forever changed her life. >> all i know is i dropped off a healthy little boy that morning. i was chasing him around and he was laughing and smiling. and then at about 2:00 in the afternoon he was dead. >> reporter: mcleod says rams was allowed to see prince unsupervised visits at montgomery mall. but then the judge granted the request for unsupervised visitati visitation. >> people kept saying document, document, document. now all i have is paperwork and no kid. >> reporter: prince was failed by everyone involved. courts, judges, police, and she will continue to fight for

change in family court so that no child or mom has to go through the pain she's endured. >> and i'm not going to stop fighting for him. like i said, if i stopped fighting then i would no longer be prince's mom. and that's never going to happen. >> reporter: rams is currently being held without bond. he's due in prince william county circuit court monday for his arraignment. she says she does not plan to attend the hearing because she doesn't want to see him. since her son's death, she started a blogueen which advocates for domestic violence victims. >> darcy spencer, thank you. d.c. club is closed to night after a gunman still at large after a sho injured fiveeople in northeast. investigators say a man came right up to the door of d.c.'s sound stage on benning road and opened fire around 2. 306789 this morning. that gunfire hit a woman and four men. all of them expected to survive. there is a surveillance camera above the entrance to the club but no word yet whether it got a good look at the suspect.

scary encounter for hotel guests held up at gun point at the homewood suites in silver spring. eight people were robbed of cash and other personal items. they arrested 18-year-old jackson julius. they found him on a ride on bus with the victim's property. he's being held on $150,000 bond. new details in a deadly crash involving a d.c. ambulance. >> a woman died after her minivan crashed into the ambulance yesterday at southern avenue at 12th street southeast. police say the van slammed into the car then hit the ambulance, flipped and then caught fire. investigators still don't know exactly what caused the crash. a notorious protest and why they did it and what they're threatening to do next. plus, new competition for teddy. the nats introduce the next president to compete at nats park. and we're also going to tell

the group anonymous is threatening to leave government documents after hacking the u.s. commission today. the hack is revenge for the death of aaron schwartz. they're calling for changes to be made to the u.s. justice system. schwartz was an internet

activist who committed suicide two months ago. he helped create the site read it. he was arrested for illegally downloading millions of academic articles. the obama administration is kicking off its campaign for gun safety. the president's organizing for action e-mailed supporters asking them to call their congressman about the issue. but democrats may stand in the way. senators up for re-election in 2014 in alaska, arkansas and montana have all expressed uncertainty about the proposals. snail mail is going to cost you a little bit more starting tomorrow. postal service is raising the cost of a first class stamp to 46 cents. other shipping prices are also going up by 4%. the postal service is trying to make up for millions in lost revenue thanks to e-mail and other technology. still ahead, the nats hold a presidential news conference. we're going to tell you the new commander in chief who will be

there he is. they announced on twitter that they have come to terms with their fifth president. today he posed for pictures with fans at nats fest inside the washington convention center. the real president taft, by the way, was the first president ever to throw out a ceremonial first pitch at a baseball game. fans and players think he'll be a good edition. >> a big president, big personality. so he'll fit right in with the rest of the gang. >> i liked his very white hair. i wonder how white he'll stay when he gets knocked into the dirt. >> that's cool. that's awesome. i'm thinking about joining them maybe aouple times and try to see if i can beat them. >> that would be cool and awesome. we'll hear from more players in sports as they gear up for the 2013 season. yeah. those are screams you hear. more than 150 people deciding to take a very cold dip into the

potomac river this morning. this is part of the polar bear plunge out at national harbor. one of the goals of the event, to raise awareness for global warming and climate change. but a chilly day to be doing that. >> at least we got above the freezing mark today, jim. >> better today than yesterday to do that. >> yes. all righty. so cold, we've been. and now we're going to start this warming process. but the way we do it around here is rush hours and whenever we have cold air in place and warm moisture laiden air running over that. we tend to get icy mix which can be a problem for you monday morning. more on that in a second. let's take a look around. we did achieve high temperatures finally above the freezing mark. technically we went up to 37. we started the day at 24. do you know how many hours we were consecutively below freezing? >> wasn't it days and days? >> it was 108 hours. >> i didn't do that math. >> i had to add it up. noon today is when we got up to 33. all righty. out there we've got some

temperatures in the 30s and lots of 20s to our north. 27 gaithersburg. reston, you're at 30. a few snow showers. this is all light. they've been hit or miss throughout the day. not really putting down much of an accumulation. we have a little activity around reston this evening. so if you're taking a stroll around the commons there, you might see a flake or two. but again, no big deal. let's talk about your planner. we're going to be waking up to cold weather tomorrow again. down in the 20s. but we'll be going up above the freezing mark for a chilly afternoon. a dry afternoon. but one that features, as i mentioned, some temperatures above the freezing mark. here's how it lays out on the time line. sunday, 7:15 in the morning. we'll have sun and clouds. then watch what happens. the clouds are going to increase and then we have to talk about some ice possible as we think about your monday morning commute. but that's milder air coming our way with 40s. let me break down the seven-day forecast for you. monday is the trickiest day.

let's do that one first. the morning rush, again, about a 40% of maybe some ice happening. and that would be impacting your morning commute. then after that, look at this warmup coming here. i mean we're going to go from ice monday morning to warm 60s on tuesday. tuesday is my pick of the week. then we have to talk about wednesday. wednesday is going to be warm early and dry early. then heavy rain will be moving in. that will effect your afternoon rush hour. and as we look at thursday, we will have an upside down day with temperatures warmest in the morning and colder in the afternoon. you heard me right. we'll be right back down to highs in the lower 30s right where we started by friday and into saturday next week. so a roller coaster for sure. if you're wondering about this crazy weather, you have it tune in tonight at 7:30. chief meteorologist will let us know how much more snow we can expect this season. we're going to tell you things from what to wear to what to eat. storm team 4 has you covered.
