the roads until about 10:00 this morning. you do have the option for unscheduled leave or telework. d.c. public schools are on a two-hour delay. the same for d.c. government. we're also tracking delays in maryland. prince george zimmerm's county >> fairfax county government is open with unscheduled leave. pay attention if you take public transit to work as well. the loudoun county commuter bus service is delayed until 10:00 and prtc omni link will be running on a three-hour delay. let's find out what had morning going to look like. tom kierein here with your forecast. tom, good morning. >> good morning. storm team 4 radar showing this precipitation but moving in the last six hours. but it's suspended aloft. much of it is drying up before reaches the ground. to our west, some is beginning to reach the ground. these areas in the darker pinks

in loudoun county, montgomery county, as well as -- frederick county west virginia. panhandle there. leesburg they're getting sleet and freezing rain beginning. all points east, it's generally just a little bit above freezing. any rain that falls is going to generally just be wet initially. but just to our west, you look here and montgomery county it's at the freezing mark, so is much of fairfax county, points west into loudoun county and along the blue ridge, prince william into fauquier, near freezing. isolated spots in calvert, anne arundel near the freezing mark. hour by hour, 6:00 we'll probably have sleet and icing. temperatures should be below freezing then. we are going to be staying near 30 degrees at 7:00 a.m., 8:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m. could have isolated slick spots on the untreated surfaces by 8:00.

just a trace of icing by 9:00. then after that, we should have things begin to warm up a little bit. i am back in ten minutes. i'll have frequent updates throughout morning. a look at traffic with danella. >> so far in our area quiet. our first 4 traffic report, construction. southbound at 198, construction set up on the left side of the roadway. two of the right lanes get by. not a lot of volume in the area so far. i-95 in virginia, live look past the occoquan river bridge northbound and southbound, travel lanes are open. this time between prince william parkway and checking to the springfield interchange, you are clear. traveling back to maryland, this time along i-270 in germantown, no issues between frederick and the beltway in both directions. no construction or anything to warn you about just yet. back to you. >> take a look at this. the winter storm bearing down on us dumped freezing rain on the

citizenship for immigrants already in this country. the bipartisan effort include charles schumer and dick durbin and john mccain and marco rubio. they tout the changes in las vegas. it will be the first trip for the president's second term in office. the president is expected to discuss the gun control regulations. nevada is a state with a growing hispanic population and overwhelmingly supports gun ownership. >> we're learning that the grand jury voted to indict the parents of jon benet ramsey in 1999. three years after she was murdered in '96, alex hunter announced there wasn't enough evidence to charge anyone with her murder. a grand jury voted to indict both for child abuse but the prosecutor didn't prosecute because he wasn't sure he could get a conviction. her parents were eventually exonerated in 2008. investigators are working to

identify the bodies of more than 230 people who died in a nightclub fire in brazil. more than 100 others were injured. it happened early sunday morning in a nightclub in santa maria. they believe the fast moving fire started when a pyrotechnics hit the ceiling. the president there declared a three-day mourning period for the victims. many of the victims were under 20. today egypt's president will meet with fellow political figures to discuss ways of dissolving violence that's swelling out of control. mohammed morse i took to egyptian television on sunday. he said he wouldn't hesitate to takes action. skirmishes in cairo between police and demonstrators left more than 50 people dade. morsi declared a month long state of emergency and curfew in pre provinces. it's 4:06. another miracle on the hudson. here hear from rescue crews who

you are looking live over the nation's capitol this morning. it is 36 degrees outside our studios roughly at this hour. we are anticipating the arrival of some pretty nasty weather conditions for your morning commute. we'll have more on that in just a moment. it took more than a week but the capitals finally have their first win of the season. the caps defeated the sabres 3-2 yesterday. alex ovechkin broke his own personal drought, collecting his first goal of the year. next up, the caps are off to ottawa to take on the senators tomorrow night. this is the beginning of the big turn around we were asking for, right? >> exactly.

keep it going. that's the plan. the weather will be a big focus, especially this morning. we're expecting the potential for freezing weather, right? >> let's check in with tom. >> precipitation freezing up on elevated surfaces and untreated surfaces. good morning. time for weather and traffic early on had monday morning. storm team 4 radar looks ominous, but most of it is not reaching the ground. it's drying up before it reaches the ground. to our west, northern montgomery county, howard county, frederick county, hagerstown, washington county, as well as the panhandle of west virginia, northern shenandoah valley, those locations are getting sleet and freezing rain. all these areas in pink. that includes loudoun county. does look like around leesburg now and west of there, up toward hillsborough, per sellville. these areas in the darker pink are getting sleet and freezing rain. these are the initial reports coming in. farther to the east of there in

northern montgomery county, also there may be a few pockets of some of that light rain now just beginning to reach the surface. of course, the critical thing are the temperatures. are they at or below freezing? right now in montgomery county, right at freezing. it's also at freezing in much of fairfax, loudoun county and prince william and fauquier a little bit above freezing. it's in the mid 30s in the district and in much of prince george's oint. parts of southern maryland a little below freezing there. by 6:00 a.m., maybe a little sleet and light icing. then light icing at 7:00 and ag morning. then we'll warm up as the afternoon progresses. our temperatures will gradually climb in the freezing conditions ending by noontime. light rain during the temperatures climbing to near 40 by 6:00 a.m. i'm back with a look at the next seven days in ten minutes. a look at traffic now with danella. good morning. >> good morning. still quiet in the area. if you're traveling along i-95 in maryland at 198, still seeing

loudoun county to check out the conditions there. good morning to you, tony. >> reporter: hey there, good morning. you know, we don't have anything coming out of the sky right now. literally, about two minutes ago we had some freezing rain going on for 10 or 15 minutes. we're on route 7 by leesburg. you can see on the ground, it's hard to see the ice pellets there that have formed on the sidewalk. now, we've come down route 7 a lot of the roads have been treated. you can see the salt and sand mix you are that they've put in. vdot deployed since midnight about 650 trucks. we've seen them all through virginia. i even saw them coming to work on 274, 95. the trucks are out there salting, they are putting down that brine mixture. this freezing rain that's accumulating here, that's what's so daing dangerous. it causes slick conditions and we may have the black ice on the road. we'll continue to stay with

this. for now back to eun. >> see you then. tony, thank you. closing arguments begin in the case of a former police officer charged with murder. daniel harmon-wright is accused of shooting and killing patricia cook last february. he took the stand in his own defense on friday while jurors got to leave the courtroom and see the scene of the shooting. he was afraid cook was going to try and kill him with her car. the trial for a baltimore man accused of murdering a 16-year-old will continue today. michael maurice johnson is charged with killing felicia barnes in 2010. prosecutors say they have a witness who says he saw johnson murder barnes. johnson's defense team says there's no dna evidence linking him to the crime. they found her body in the susquehanna river months after she went missing. calling for the release of an american pastor jailed in an iranian prison. he was sentenced to eight years

behind bars. the idaho native was convicted on charges of attempting to undermine security by spreading christianity. a state department spokesperson says the agency condemns his persecution of religious freedom. a woman missing in turkey. the 33-year-old was visiting turkey alone for photography and was supposed to return last week but family members say that the wife and mother of two never made her flight home. police in istanbul say her passport and medical cards were still in her room, although she was gone. her family is working with the fbi and the u.s. embassy there to find her. surprising developments in former israeli prime minister ariel sharon's condition. doctors say he may not be brain-dead even though he's within in a coma for seven years. they showed him pictures of his family and played recordings of his son's voice while he underwent a brain scan.

inand talk to a doctor will changing their diet and exercise routines. doctors say the increase in diabetes is directly linked to spikes in childhood obesity. it's 4:18. public hearings begin in the wake of the tragic shooting in newtown, connecticut. the hearings are being led by a bipartisan task force on gun violence prevention and children's safety. they'll focus on issues related to the massacre at sandy hook elementary school. it gives residents a chance to weigh in on ush us, school safety, gun control and mental health awareness. the senate judiciary committee will begin hearings on wednesday following president obama's suggestions to try to curb gun violence. some of his suggestions included universal background checks and ban on assault weapons. the president could face opposition from his own party. in alaska, arkansas and montana, they're up for reelection in 2014 and are unsure about the

president's proposals. the fate of a wrongful death lawsuit filed in the wake of the virginia tech shootings could be decided next month. three supreme court justices will hear appeals in the lawsuit. they'll decide whether the full court will take up the case. two victims' families filed the wrongful death suit against the commonwealth claiming their daughter could have survived if virginia tech warned the campus sooner. the jury found in favor of the famili families. a judge are upheld the decision but reduced the damage awarded. both parties filed appeals. a large barge hit a bridge causing an oil spill in the mississippi river. officials with the coast guard have not said how much of the oil spilled into the river. oily sheen was reported three miles down river from the accident. it happened early sunday morning. officials say two barges were damaged but they believe only one hit the bridge causing the leak. 20 minutes after the hour now. this morning people are in the

hospital after a rescue on the hudson river. crews went into icy water after the small plane crash there. take a look at new video in overnight. a single engine plane left the trenton rob insville airport in new jersey on a sightseeing trip. a man and a woman were on the plane when it went down yesterday afternoon. investigators say they were about to get out of the plane and put life vests on before sank. >> we could hear them calling for help. we a visual on them. we were trying to head them off. they were going southbound at a pretty good clip. >> the two victims were taken to the hospital suffering from hypothermia. the cause of that crash remains under investigation. 4:21 now. time for weather and traffic on the 1s. we're watching the skies morning. meteorologist tom kierein with more on what could be a messy morning commute, tom. >> don't have any precipitation yet in washington. that's a live view from the nbc4 city camera. 4:21 on this monday morning. showing a lot of this precipitation is suspended aloft, drying before it reaches the ground.

farther to the west and north, it is reaching the ground. tony tull was right near leesburg, these areas in the brighter white, they're getting sleet. that includes montgomery county and then across the potomac into northern loudoun county and farther west, charles town, west virginia and north of winchester, they're getting a little bit of sleet, maybe wet snowflakes mixing in. the areas in pink, light freezing rain farther south of there along the blue ridge toward front royal. closer to washington, we have this area, leesburg east in loudoun county, across the potomac near damascus to poolsville, leesburg and farther west, hillsborough, getting sleet and light icing. this is going to be persisting for the next several hours. temperatures there are right at the freezing mark. most of those locations that are seeing that light icing in the freezing mark there holding steady as well as montgomery county. around washington, the nearby suburbs and generally inside the

beltway, we're a little bit above freezing. just a couple of degrees. eastern suburbs, prince george's county, anne a run dem, parts of charles county -- farther south, prince william into stafford and spotvania, a little above freezing. a big area under an advisory. the district, eastern west virginia, all of maryland including montgomery, arlington, fairfax, prince george's countys. this threat of freezing rain until noontime. going forward, this is as of 8:00 a.m., we're going to have this precipitation still around the region. most of it freezing rain. but then by noontime, changing over to light rain as we'll get above freezing. still light rain by 4:00. by 6:00, most of it will be over and we'll be drying out and warming up tomorrow. for the rest of the morning hours between now and 9:00 a.m., we'll have this light freezing rain holding steady near 30 degrees. four-day forecast, afternoon highs tomorrow into the 50s. may hit the 60s on wednesday
