"news4 today" continues right now at 5:00 a.m. take a look at this scene right now. this is a i live picture of the beltway near 50 prince george's county. only one lane get by in each direction after an accident involving a fire station truck, a tractor-trailer and an suv on the other side of the highway. seven people were rushed to the hospital, including four firefighters. melissa mollet is live on the scene gathering new information. melissa? >> that's right. good morning. an unbelievable scene of wreck anl here. i'm going to step out of the way so you can see what's happening. the cleanup is under way right now. you can see the wreckage in the distance. that is a crumpled fire truck. fire station 828 were coming down the inner loop at 3:00 a.m.

after responding to a call. they were hit from behind while they were moving by a tractor-trailer. both the fire truck and that tractor-trailer ended up flipping on the inner loop and crashing in the process. one of those vehicles hit an suv that also flipped. as you mentioned, seven people hurt, four firefighters in that truck. two in the suv and one in the tractor-trailer all transported by ground as trauma patients. we understand that none of the injuries are life-threatening. now, two massive tow trucks did pull up on the scene here a little while ago. of course, it is going to be hours before this entire situation is cleaned up as danella's been telling us. the inner loop and outer loop in both directions, only the right lane getting by as maryland state police vestigate. we'll be out here all morning. danella, an amazing scene out here. >> melissa, thank you for that. it's going to be a tough commute this morning for folks leaving the house. traveling the wilson bridge and

enly in the 50s washington, montgomery and arlington and fairfax counties on this wednesday morning. just clouds racing through overnight. little bit of the moon showing through in the western sky. later today, a risk of severe storms. some of the storms in this yellow zone could produce damaging winds that would be coming from this storm system coming in from the midwest. this is now in the ohio valley. this is sweeping east. probably will be right into the metro area but not until this evening. between now and then, 7:00 a.m. in the 50s with a southerly breeze around 15 miles per hour. then getting blustery the rest of the day gusting to 30 miles an hour. 4:00 p.m., cloudy, the mid 70s to low 70s much of the region. then storms rolling in west to east beginning in the shenandoah valley around 7:00 p.m. into the metro area between 8:00 and 11:00 p.m. the storms could produce damaging wind. down around 60 by then. we could pick up over an inch of rain. i am back in ten minutes with another update.

eun? tom, thank you. a developing story in alabama. police there say a gunman is still holding a young boy hostage. they've been negotiating with the man all night. it all started last night. the gunman walked on to a school bus. he shot and killed the driver who wouldn't let him leave with the child. the man then took the child to a shelter behind a church. that's where we stand now. we continue working on the story in our newsroom. we'll bring you the lathes information as it comes into our newsroom. also developing at this hour, a 4-year-old boy in serious condition after being hit by a car. this happened while you were sleeping in green belt, maryland. chopper 4 was over the scene at an apartment complex on breezewood drive. the boy was with his father at the time of the accident. the driver did stay on the scene. police in charles county are investigating what they believe it an attempted mthis morning. they found a man and woman both in their 60s shot inside a home on the 3100 block of heart leaf

lane and waldorf last night at 8:30. it appears the woman shot the man and then turned president gun on herself. she died on the scene and the man was airlifted to the hospital. a suspected robber, police found him getting a haircut between crimes. this surveillance video shows the man robbing the kiss and ride convenience store in wheaton yesterday. a few hours later, investigators say he robbed the capital one bank across the street. but last night officer andrew sus spotted a suspicious cab outside a nearby hair salon. to his surprise, this guy was in it. >> in mid-haircut, never dreamed of it. especially red handed with all the ink all over him. i feel glad i got him off the streets. not my first one but i'm very happy. police say the man confessed to both robberies yesterday. plus another robbery at a capital one bank.

he's being held on $125,000 bond. help from the federal government is on its way to victims of superstorm sandy. president obama signed into law a providing $50 billion for victims. he signed it after returning from nevada congress finally approved it. the president praised lawmakers for passing it but criticized them for taking so lg do it. congress to overhaul the nation's immigration laws. he unveiled his own reform proposal wred in las vegas. he wants to boost border security and crackdown on employers hiring undocumented workers. he wants to create a path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in this country. he is threatening to send his own legislation to capitol hill if congress doesn't act on it. immigration rights activists say they're happy with the president's plan.

good morning. tracking breaking news on the beltway. the inner loop and outer loop in maryland at 50. serious accident has just the right lane getting by on the outer loop of the beltway. and inner loop as well. just the right lane will get you by this accident. it does involve a fire truck and a tractor-trailer.

no word on when all your travel lanes will be open. i can tell you an update, haz-mat is on the scene right now. to work your way around it, let's talk about delays on the outer loop about two miles. not bad on the inner loop. it is pretty slow. this will affect your morning commute. an update on the water main break on aspen hills southbound. between aspen hill road and hewitt avenue. we'll head over to tom and check our warm forecast. good morning, tom. >> right now, we've held in some of the warmth from yesterday. temperatures around the region are hovering in the upper 50s in prince george's county to near 60 degrees. near 60 in washington. 50s montgomery county. much of northern virginia, including arlington and fairfax counties are in the 50s right now. through the morning hours, a bit of a blustery southerly wind picking up. a little sun in and out. in the mid 50s by can 8:00 a.m. by 10:00 a.m. should be in the low 60s. into the afternoon hours, we'll have thickening clouds moving from the west.

town. it tried unsuccessfully to launch a rocket in 2009 and again in 2010. this comes amid tensions with north korea which launched its own satellite last month. both south korea and the u.s. called that a cover for a test of banned missile technology. this morning, we've learned there were problems with boeing 87 jets even earlier than we thought. nippon airways says before two battery fires, the airline replaced ten batteries in its aircraft. the airline never reported it because they said safety was not considered a concern. the airline says some of the replacement batteries had to be replaced again. all 787s around the world are grounded pending an investigation. 5:18 right now. more hearings for guantanamo prisoners accused of plotting the 9/11 terror attacks. in an unusual move, attorneys for the -- asked to spend time in the prison with their clients. the lawyers need to spend time with their clients to evaluate

conditions so they can properly defend them. the five suspect have been held in near total secrecy for more than six years away from other prisoners. police officers had a philadelphia suburb were under investigation after they shot and killed two dogs who were fighting each other. the man who caught this on video lives next to a high school. he says he questions if police were being safe by firing their guns so close to to the school. >> given the fact that you're right in front of the high school during school hours and during regular business hours on the busiest street in the city, the area probably should have been a little more secure. >> police in the neighborhood are wondering why animal control wasn't involved. the local police chief says there was one animal control officer in the city and he was not available when the dog fight occurred. >> montgomery county police believe one man is responsible for a string of robberies. the latest happened monday night in germantown. the suspect attacked a

46-year-old woman as he was looking for cash. police believe he's responsible for at least nine other robberies in the area. they've released this sketch of the suspects. take a look. investigators say he started going after purses and electroni electronics. recently he claimed he had a weapon. if you have any information, call montgomery police. fairfax county is a step closer to -- campaign signs that are cluttering up parkways and roadways. there will be a public hearing to discuss a proposal to allow the county to clean up the signs. previously, fairfax county was barred from removing signs on state-controlled roads. the proposal would allow the county to fine offenders on behalf of the vdot. a final vote doesn't come until later this year. parents in virginia are scratching their heads this morning after fairfax county officials say they're looking to change zoning permit rules for home daycare providers. current state law allows for up to 12 kids in home daycares.

county rules allow for seven unless the provider has a special zoning permit. the fee for that permit is more than $1,000. the county board of supervisors presented more. >> the county will do everything that we can to make sure we're keeping child care providers and that we're making it easier for new child care providers to come through the system. >> i think we're going to lose a lot of good daycare providers because a lot of people will not want to go through this process. >> there will be public hearings to discuss the proposal in the coming months. 5:21 right now. let's go to first 4 traffic with danella sealock. >> a serious crash in maryland. it's affecting the inner and outer loop. if you're traveling in lanham, you'll have just the right lane getting by. delays on the outer loop, not

toyota. it's recalling more than a million cars. this is because of airbag and wiper problems. it affects more than 700,000 corolla and matrix vehicles right here in the u.s. it's caused minor injuries in 18 cases much close to 400,000 lexus is are being recalled because of the wiper issues. now, this is news that comes just days after toyota was crowned the top car maker of the world. at the live desk, angie goff, news 4. a commode controversy is swirling at one of the nation's largest airports. this is video shot by the chicago sun-times. it shows plastic wrapped toilet seats at o'hare airport that are supposed to be fresh. a reporter put orange juice on the bowl and shows that some of the liquid is dragged to the top of the plastic. hundreds of janitors were replaced with a contractor that

we are live above that breaking news on the beltway at this hour. one lane open in each direction near route 50 after a serious accident. it sent seven people to the hospital. it involved a tractor-trailer, a fire engine and an suv on the other side of the highway.

melissa mollet live on the scene with the latest. melissa? >> that's right. good morning. obviously the cleanup is continuing. we have seven people with traumatic injuries transported to the hospital. four are firefighters. let's whip around. this is the inner loop of the beltway. you can see a big backup. that right lane getting by. here is what we know. these firefighters were heading this exact same direction coming from the west lanham station. they were up the street at a call that was no major deal. they came down the road this way and were hit from behind by a tractor-trailer. that is when the fire truck flipped the tractor-trailer flipped and they hit an suv. that also flipped. a passerby we spoke with at the scene is saying that he thought the fire truck was trying to make a u-turn to switch on to the outer loop of the beltway and that is when this accident happened. again, seven people in all were

hurt. we're taking a look right now if we can from above. our chopper over the scene. you can kind of get a better vantage point of the accident looking from above. four people in the fire truck, four firefighters, two people in the suv and then one person in the tractor-trailer. again, the injuries traumatic they say. they're considered nonlife-threatening. the cleanup is going to take hours and hours. we did have a couple of huge tow trucks out here a little while ago to try and right things. get things cleaned up. also a fuel spill out here. again, going to take several hours before the situation is completely cleared up. live in prince george's county. melissa mollet, news 4. danella, we'll shoot it inside to you. you can probably see this is a rough commute for people here. >> yes, melissa. as you mentioned, several hours to clear. already at this hour in the morning, you're facing on the inner loop of the beltway, a delay of two miles right nowment i'm in the traffic office checking on other roads.

it was a big hassle to get unloaded weapons into this hearing. republicans are complaining about that saying how can you consider restricting weapons that we can't see when we're discussing them. nevertheless, what they will see is testimony from wayne la pierre, the head of the nra. he will argue that not only will a ban on weapons not work. he'll cite a study that it didn't reduce crime in '94. he'll say a universal background check is unreasonable as well. that criminals would never get a background check and those are the people you're targeting. we'll hear from mark kelly, the husband of former congressman gabrielle giffords who was shot in arizona two years ago. they've started a lobbying group for -- while kelly will say he's a gun owner and believes the mra does a lot of good work when it comes to safety, he completely disagrees when it comes to universal background checks and that's when he and his wife, congresswoman giffords will focus on as necessity lobby for

more gun control efforts. >> tracie potts on the hill, thank you. the anne arundel county board will hold an emergency meeting to remove john leopold from office. he was found guilty of misconduct in a courtroom yesterday. he was accused of forcing county employees to -- to put up election signs in 2010. the judge will allowance a sentencing date tomorrow. they will hold a formal vote during a regularly scheduled meeting on monday. a former culpeper police officer will learn how long he'll spend in prison for killing a woman last year. a yir found daniel harmon-wright guilty of voluntary manslaughter yesterday. he shot and killed 54-year-old patricia cook in a church parking lot last february. harmon-wright claimed cook tried to drive off with his arm stuck in her window. he faces up to 25 years in prison. we are working to find out when the man accused of killing his elderly father in his home will return from virginia -- mac

wood, jr., he and two accomplices killed his father. it looked like an accident at first. the younger wood ran from the house that day screaming for help and claiming he found his father at the bottom of the stairs. detectives say that was all an act. >> my father had terminal cancer and he only had a few months left. all i wanted was one more thanksgiving and one more christmas with my dad. and i was robbed of all of that. >> police are not saying why they think mac wood jr. killed his father or how he did it. a long awaited d.c. strers may not make a debut until 2014. originally they were supposed to be here last year, then it was changed to late 2013, now

sources tell us that they will arrive next year at the earliest. two are ready to go. but d.c. has them sitting in storage at the green belt facility. people in that area are wondering why this project taking so long to complete. >> where are the streetcars? that's what i would like to know. where are the streetcars? >> i was told they were going to put them up in 2012. they haven't done it yet. >> it's 2013. >> we're still waiting. >> and they now say it could be 2014. >> we're still waiting. what's the problem? >> d.c. officials say there is no problem with the streetcars or the rails. it's just taking longer than expected to sort out all the details. making a u-turn downtown in d.c. could cost you $100 today. police will land out tickets to drivers who are making the turns across the bike lanes on pennsylvania avenue. those tickets include a $100 fine. it's part of an effort to keep cyclists safe. police, d-dot and the taxi cab commission will hand out flyers today as well so drivers know what turns they can and cannot

that is the sound of thousands of egyptians defying a nationwide curfew overnight. protesters played soccer in the streets, danced and rallied to demand that mohamed morsi resign. it was put into place last sunday after anti-government protests left 60 people dead and hundreds injured. the opposition says morsi and the muslim brotherhood high yan jacked the revolution and haven't discuss the issues. the deadly nightclub fire in brazil. some of the pyrotechnics used by the band at the nightclub in santa maria were designed for outdoor use. they say the band knowingly bought them because they only cost a dollar.
