metro's green line. thousand of riders stranded, some forced to walk beneath the an co ancostia river. storms topple trees, knock out power and force water rescues and the threat is not over yet. tonight we have news crews checking out the damage in maryland, virginia and d.c. >> first here is doug kammerer with more on what is going on right now. doug? >> the threat is not over yet. as you mention, talking about temperatures today in into the 70s, creating a lot of warm air. you add moisture and this is what you get. you get showers, thunderstorms out there. not a lot of thunder and lightning with the storms, what there is and has been, very heavy rain. we are going to continue to see that, the tornado watch, for the most part is now out of the d.c. metro area. does include southern maryland, portions of the northern neck and fredericksburg. the threat diminishing. the rain threat we have seen here. look at the rain.

heaviest rain. we're going to continue to see the heaviest rain there. that's where it has been, pretty much all evening. matter of fact we have seen estimates between 2 to 3 inches. around 3 inches in leesburg. 3 1/2 in western fairfax, gaithersburg, 3 inches too. we have flood warnings, flash flood warnings. encompassing the i-95 corridor. if you come across water, turn around, don't drowned. we have flooded roadways and could have more tonight and tomorrow morning. stay with us we'll keep you ahead of the storm. >> the conditions have led to water rescues in montgomery county tonight. this car got stuck in germantown near route 355 after a creek overflowed. fire crews were called in to pull the driver out. the car may stay there until the water recede. since the tow trucks can't get through the flooding. in northern virginia, high water created dangerous

conditions. high wind knocked out purr to thoto -- power to the customers at the height of the storm. our reporter is in wood bridge. crews are working to help those still in the dark. david? >> reporter: jim, crews are working quickly to try to restore power to 388 people still without power here in woodbridge. compare that to two hours ago when we had more than 4,000. they're making progress. i'll step out of the way. see what they're doing here, in woodbridge, where the power outage is centered. because a tree fell on lines, took them down. show you video closer as dominion virginia power has been working out here the past few hours. in the midst of rain and at times, strong wind. trying to restore power. 38 388 people still without here. in woodbridge, we made our way to fairfax. we were in springfield and leesburg. and we didn't see any significant damage caused by the heavy wind and rain. that doesn't mean it is not out there. if you do see it. let us know.

massive funnel cloud in daresville, georgia. leaving dozens of homes and businesses destroyed in its wake. >> we have about a two-mile-long path. maybe 1/4 mile wide. angled through town. >> reporter: 100 people at work when the twister took aim on this plant. thankfully all were safe. >> i'm hearing from folks been here all their lives, never seen anything this bad. >> reporter: one of the many towns across southeast in the line of fire from this dangerous line of storms stretching from northern florida to the northeast. in tennessee, the national with service confirmed four tornados touched down. one man was killed by a falling tree. east of memphis, buildings were flattened. their contents scattered far and wide. >> you know, i am alive you, know, i am alive. it could have been a lot worse. >> and in kentucky, two people were injured when another confirmed tornado blew a trailer off its foundation. from the midwest to the

i don't know when they're getting here. >> reporter: a crowd of confusion. spilling on to m street by navy yard metro station in southeast d.c. during the evening rush hour. richard blinker is stunned. >> craziness. utter chaos, really i's been like this since the minute we got on the subway. >> reporter: trouble started at 5:00 when it started smoking. an emergency responder, powered down a section of the track with two trains in the tunnel between anacostia station and the navy yard station. >> he actually took down power on both side which was unexpected to us. and in doing that -- there were two trains out, between navy yard and anacostia, that lost power. >> nearly 2,000 passengers sat in the dark for more than 30 minutes. alvin lane one of 150 people who got fed up and self-evacuated. >> it was a mess. >> reporter: take a look at all the people as they walk up from the metro. many waiting by the intersection. there are buses right over here

supposed to pick them up. >> nothing i can do. >> reporter: lillian mccloud waited 30 minutes. some people cut in lines to get on the shuttle buses. >> i'll get there. >> reporter: metro officials tell me there weren't enough transit offices to direct crowd because officers were helping people who self-evacuated in the tunnel. >> clearly as a result of this incident. need to be improved. that may include review with the fire department. >> reporter: metro will review what happened. as for service restored at 7:15 p.m. live here in southeast d.c. shomari stone, news 4. the search is on along h street for the person who stabbed a rider on a metro bus that happened on the x 2 bus at 11th/h northeast. the victim's condition its not known. he was conscious when police got there. 60 people on the bus. no word on possible motive. >> volunteer fire fighter out of surgery resting with a

surgically reattached arm. it follows a nasty crash on the beltway this morning. police say a fire struck chum lanham hills, maryland trying to make a u turn in prince george's county after responding to a minor accident. that's when the truck was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer. the most seriously injured fire fighter is recovering now from surgery at union memorial hospital in baltimore. three other firefighters were injured. none of them seriously. to a developing story in alabama -- the fbi is trying to negotiate the release of a 6-year-old boy being held hostage. investigators say a 65-year-old man stormed a school bus yesterday, killing the driver, and grabbing the little boy. they have been hiding in an underground bunker ever since. neighbors describe the suspect as volatile and troubled, but police have no reason to believe the child has been harmed. there is sympathy from the white house and elsewhere, for the family of a 15-year-old honor student who was killed by a stray bullet in chicago.

she had just performed with her high school band at president obama's inauguration here in d.c. last week. she was killed yesterday. the president and mrs. obama said their prayers are with her family. police are still trying to find the person who killed her. tonight an emotional plea from parents of those children killed in the school shooting in newtown, connecticut. many people packed into the town's high school auditorium to night to call for more gun wendy? >> reporter: the gun control debate has been going on and ignited since the massacre in newtown, a month ago. this is sacred town and it brought the entire connecticut state legislature, the entire legislature, came to newtown tonight to hold a hearing. and they heard passionate calls for change. in front of the families of many of those killed at sandy hook elementary. parents brought signs with

pictures of their sons and their daughters lost on the awful day last month. and the state law makers listened as everyone went to the microphone and many of them pleading the case for stricter gun control measure. one was nicole hockley, who lost her son dillon and her older son jake is trying to understand why his brother is gone. >> he describes december 14th as the day hell came to my school. we all recognize december 14th as the day hell came to newtown. >> there were also plenty of people arguing that there are enough gun control laws on the books. we don't need any more. more legislation is not the answer according to man of the people there. connecticut law makers are hoping to pass some package of new restrictions by the end of february. back to you. >> thank you, wendy. up next on news 4, controversy a new ad campaign on metro. it all centers around one word. >> a guy broke into a woman's house in northwest d.c. she slept through the whole thing.

relations says the word has become synonymous with terrorism. they say it really means struggling in the way of god. >> a d.c. woman is making sure all her doors are locked after she slept through a burglary. she was napping yesterday when a burglar kicked in her back door in northwest. later an officer spotted the man looking suspicious. and found stolen computers and iphone in his possession. using a photo on that phone, police tracked the stolen stuff back to rossman's house and woke her up to explain what had happened. >> the first shock and -- sort of fright. but -- you know? but then i realized how lucky i was. >> police believe he targeted the house because the security door wasn't closed. >> turn back to our weather now. video from the storm 4 weather desk. there it is. covered with rain drops.

moisture for the months of january. this is typically a type of march or april storm. behind it much colder air. even some snow back toward the west. you mention how strong the storm has been. numerous tornados down toward the south. julie martin in northwest georgia with more on a tornado that really wreaked havoc. >> reporter: well a chilly night here in north georgia. the rain has finally stopped falling. giving folks a bit of a break. they do have their work cut out for them. take a lak look at this 18-whee paused on its side like nothing. and all over the region, dozens of cars flipped over and crushed as a result of this fast-moving storm that came through just before noon. earlier today. tonight power is out for most here in north georgia. the crews are out trying to restore it best they can. widespread destruction through the small town. just across the street. a plant, a large plant, was destroyed with about 100 people

inside. and all of them made it out okay. minor injuries reported. and in georgia, i'm meteorologist, jewel leap muliee weather channel. we have had a tornado watch in our area throughout the evening. right now include southern maryland. northern neck and spotsylvania, and stafford, do not expect much of a tornado threat. we did not see a single tornado warning with this watch. that's very good news for us. but we are still going to see though is the flood threat. flood warnings. for rivers and creeks. en through frederick, mort guest montgomery, and loudon county, 2, 3, 4 inches of rain. flash flood warnings, baltimore, metro d.c., through culpeper. flooding is going to be an issue overnight tonight. please give yourself a lot of extra time. especially early tomorrow morning. we will still have many roads flooded or closed as we do right

now. we don't want you to get caught up in that. wind advisory. also still in effect through 6:00 a.m. haven't seen the strongest winds just yet. our front well to the west. that will move through. when it does, we'll see wind picking up. 40, 50 miles an hour. take a look at high temperature tuesday. 73 in manassas. 72 in d.c. dull else hes hit a . fredericksburg, 76 degrees there. that is not what we are going to see tomorrow. right now temperatures have fallen. down to 56. quite mild for this time of year. wind out of the southwest. 6 miles an hour. light to moderate rain. hour by hour. tomorrow morning. rain, wind around 1:00. rain and wind, 5:00. and then we'll see things clear out. wind will kick up. temperatures will actually be falling. by tomorrow afternoon, temperatures falling into the 30s for the wind chill. so, yes, do not leave tomorrow without your jacket.
