the month of february. this is a live look at the conditions in virginia. one viewer tweeted us about the big fat flakes falling there. we have been watching that snow falling throughout our area. people driving up i-95 encountering snow showers now. we're watching the roads for problems that pop up. this is i-270 that we're showing you now as they are getting snowfall in the western parts of maryland right now as well. we want to begin with our forecast. the big picture here. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein letting us know who is getting the snow now. tom. >> this is not a major event. it is moving very fast as well. it is producing just some big fat flakes there. the bright white areas. here's the high res radar. the areas in the darker green or yellow where the snow is coming down harder. north central montgomery county, frederick county, maryland and south and east of washington. much of prince george's county into southern anne arundel, this

dark green area in northern charles and across the potomac into southern fairfax county along 95 from fairfax county down toward lorton and northern prince william. that's where there's one band of bigger flakes falling. roadways treated, road temperatures a little above freezing. it will be melting on roads. any accumulation is only on grassy areas. temperatures are near or below freezing though. some of the roadways that have been untreated may be a light dusting on the untreated surfaces over the next couple of hours. all of northern virginia, most of maryland at or below freezing. reagan national at 33 degrees. it's fast-moving. not even an inch locally. it may happen in parts of southern maryland and the eastern shore. farther west, an inch or two in the valleys. it does look like it's only a

dusting to much at the most. maybe a half inch to an inch. again, this is going to be quickly ending by noontime. windy and cold today. this afternoon, s back. windy and cold later tonight. and over the weekend, maybe more snow showers saturday night. i'm back with frequent updates throughout the morning. danella here with a look at how it's affecting our traffic. good morning. let's talk about a couple incidents in our area. as you travel i-370, the ramp heading westbound 370, the ramp to 270, a disabled vehicle there. use caution. give you an update on the earlier accident. the car is loaded up ready to be towed out of the intersection. this is 355 northbound. the interception is blocked. you can work your way around it. follow police direction. tom was talking about flurries. we can see them here in gaithersburg. use caution this morning. i'm back in ten minutes. aaron and eun, over to you. >> danella, thank you.

if you're rushing out to get your kids out to school, slow down if you live in these areas. in virginia, frederick, page, orange, warren counties as well as winchester, just about a minute ago, it's not on your screen yet, rappahannock county schools opening two hours late. hampshire, hardy, jefferson, miner mineral, morgan county schools will open two hours late. the delays are on the bottom of the screen and on nbcwashington.com. if you're headed to the laurel marc station, you may want to think of a different way to work. one computer lot is closed and this is what it looked like last night. crews are still waiting for water to recede after heavy rains forced this river from the banks yesterday. a second lot is expected to be full by the end of the hour. marc says laurel commuters can use the savage or mur kirk stations instead. the tickets will be honored at no extra charge.

a terrifying ordeal on board a flight. this flight had to land unexpectedly when the pilot passed out. it was en route from los angeles to seattle when the pilot lost consciousness. the first officer was able to divert the plane to portland and land safe live. we're still working to learn what caused him to pass out. keeping close tabs on the labor department. it will release january jobs report. it's expected to remain at 7.8 for a third straight month. they believe the economy added about 155,000 jobs last month. it's averaged about 150,000 jobs a month for two years. 6:04 right now. the obama administration is ready to take a more active role in the crisis in syria. vice president swroe biden will meet with the head of the syrian opposition. they'll meet tomorrow in munich at a security conference being held there. this will be the first time that

a high-level u.s. meeting has happened since it started the uprising two years ago. more than 60,000 people have been killed in that war. the senate will vote next week on whether to confirm chuck hagel as defense secretary. political analysts expect him to win approval despite a brewing confirmation hearing yesterday. he was grilled on his stance on iran and israel. if confirmed, he'll succeed leon panetta. we'll find out if a mistrial will be declared in the case of a former culpeper police officer. two dictionaries and a thesaurus were found in the swrir room after the verdict was handed down on tuesday. jury members apparently looked up the definition of the word malice which suggests that they might have been confused about their instructions. daniel harmon-wright claimed he shot patricia ann cook last year when his arm was caught in her suv window when she tried to

as tom has been telling us all morning, snow is starting to fall across parts of the region. this is a live picture from gaithersburg, maryland, now. snow covered roads an the highway officials are encouraging people to be cautious about this snow that could be a bit slick. >> we've seen snow in southern prince george's county as well and parts of northern virginia. tom kierein is here with the forecast. >> i just checked the road temperatures. in montgomery county over the last half hour or so, the road temperatures have dropped below freezing. we're beginning to see a couple lace, light there as well as in loudoun county, frederick county and toward the pennsylvania border. farther west, road temperatures are below freezing in western fairfax county and into northern prince william and in fauquier county. but road temperatures south and east of washington, most of them are above freezing. so the snow generally melting on road temperatures. untreefted surfaces north and west, where you see the dark green area, it's coming down harder, montgomery, loudoun and

prince george's, towards northern charles county, it's coming down harder. the road temperatures are a little above freezing. air temperatures are near 30 degrees. but some light accumulation on grassy areas there. also, north and west, it's going to accumulate a dusting to an inch at the most. farther to the east and south, maybe an inch or so. maybe 1 to 2 north and west around the metro area. all of this done by 9:00 this morning. then sun back, windy and cold through the afternoon. down to 20 by midnight. seven-day outlook in ten minutes. danella with a look at traffic now. >> good morning. in the first 4 traffic office. traveling along great seneca highway, i received a report of an accident in the area. an update on the earlier crash. this is near lake forest mall. 355 northbound. you can take a live look here. the accident out of the roadway. but you're seeing snow. give yourself extra time and use caution in the area.

former mayor ed koch died this morning. he had been in and out of the hospital in recent months and moved to intensive care. he served as mayor from 1978 to '89. after leaving office, endured a stroke, heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery. at the live desk, melissa mollet. rescuers are using dogs, trucks and a crane to look for survivors in that deadly explosion in mexico city. this new video just into the newsroom. it shows the explosion near the headquarters of a mexican oil company. that state-owned company is circled here. the arrow points to the explosion in one of their buildings next door.

a very quick flash there in the distance. at least 25 people died. more than 100 others injured yesterday. investigators are trying to figure out if that was an accident or a terrorist attack. another developing story. a truck carrying fireworks exploded killing at least eight people in china. some reports say that number is as high as 26. the explosion happened this morning on a bridge in the central part of that country. the blast sent cars and trucks down 100 feet to the ground below. the fireworks were supposed to be part of the lunar new year celebrations. the big game is still more than 48 hours away but the party is well mr way in new orleans already. thousands of ravens and 49ers fans are pouring into the big easy. nbc's jay gray is live in the middle of it all this morning. jay? >> reporter: good morning, aaron. yes. the party continues here in new orleans as it so often does. but magnified with a super bowl right in the middle of mardi

gras. they gear up for the game here. new orleans excited about this opportunity. it's been more than -- it's been 11 years actually since the city hosted a super bowl. after this weekend, it will be their tenth time to have the billing game in the big easy. that ties miami for the most had any one city. they want to get back into the rotation and believe this is a chance to show that the city has come all the way back after katrina and the oil spill. they believe that they are ready to host a party of this magnitude. so far, everything going very well. there are more restaurants now than they were before katrina. more hotel rooms, which are 99.4% full. it's tough to find a place to stay in the city. a lot people looking forward to seeing this go off without a hitch. it has to this point. >> jay, i know you've gotten the lay of the land down there. >> sure. >> any guesstimate on who has more fans in new orleans right

occoquan area. tony? >> good morning. you know for the past, i'd say, 20 minutes, we've had fairly big snowflakes coming down. take a look at that light to get a better idea of what we're dealing with. this is a flurry of activity going on. if you come down, a look at the grass. we've had accumulation in the grass. now, as tom has been saying, the temperatures on the roadways are still a little too warm. look at the sidewalk, you can see the snow once it hits, it melts. we'll pan off to the roadway. you can get a look at traffic. there is absolutely no accumulation in the roadway. we had a salt truck come through, i'd say, five or ten minutes ago putting down salt and brine mixture. not too big of a deal on the roads and the sidewalks, but we're seeing accumulation in the grassy areas and other spots. that's the latest from occoquan. i'm tony tull. back to you guys. time for weather and traffic on the 1s. here's tom. farther north and west, the road temperatures are below freezing and it is beginning to stick on some of the roads in montgomery county, western pair fax, loudoun county, northern

sometimes maybe comes back harder and back to flurries again. you can see the bright white zones. these are bands of some snow showers from the eastern shore and then west into anne arundel, calvert, southern, does look like charles county and into western charles, southern prince george's. that bright white band. much of this is not accumulating on any of the pavement there because the road temperatures are above freezing. west and north of washington, the road temperatures are below freezing. so the bright white bands here, it is piling up. southern howard county and southern montgomery county and here in northwest. some of the road temperatures right on the beltway are above freezing. it's melting on the roadways there. but a little paragraph they are north and west in montgomery county, western fairfax into loudoun, northern prince william, it is sticking to the untreated surfaces there. watch out for that. fast-moving. this is coming through quickly. it will be moving east of the metro area next couple of hours.

by 8:00, 9:00, it will be tapering off and ending. we'll be near the freezing mark. the untreated surfaces, we'll see the light accumulation, dusting to an inch. slick spots north and west of washington. south and east, melting on roadways. somewhat higher amounts, 1 to 2 inches. the dark blue zone along the blue ridge and the higher elevations, points west of there. all of this will will continue rapidly moving away and will begin to clear out windy and cold as we get into the afternoon hours. now, with conditions going on in prince george's county here is megan mcgrath. how is it looking there, megan? is it melting on roads. >> tom, we've had the snow coming down at quite a clip. about 45 minutes i would say. you look at the accumulation on the grassy areas. all is coated. we've got a dusting here. if you look out on the roadways, the major roads. this is 301 here. major roads have been treated. we're just seeing it melt. we're seeing wet pavement at that point. that's good news for commuters. we're not expecting a major

at one point all your lanes were blocked on route 15 on mountville road. you're southbound, just the left shoulder is blocked. you're able to work your way around. use caution this morning. want to show you a live look 355 at clarksburg. the roads have not been treated. use caution if you come on some of the roads. here's a live look right now. we're talking about travel speeds on i-95 in virginia. as you make your way to prince william parkway. i saw crowding along the lorton area. not as bad. eun, it will take about 36 minutes from quantico heading northbound to the beltway. back to you. >> 6:34 nowment a major traffic alert for d.c. drivers. a portion of the southeast freeway is now shut down because of construction. crews closed the eastbound side between 8th street and pennsylvania avenue. the ban will stay this way for 18 to 20 months.

this is phase 2 of the 11th street bridge project. this will have a big impact on drivers trying to get to i-295 pennsylvania avenue or northbound d.c. 295. signs direct traffic on to i-695. metro offering an apology this morning for wednesday night's massive meltdown. instead of cutting power to one set of trab track, she shut down -- they got off the train and started walking in the tunnel. metro's general manager is apologizing and admits the response was not good enough. he says there is an ongoing investigation into what led to the mess. for the third day, negotiators are trying to get to a gunman to get him to release a 5-year-old boy. 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes stormed a school bus in midland city on tuesday. he's accused of shooting and killing the bus driver who refused to let him take the children. he ended up taking a boy,

though, named ethan. he took him into a bunker. the boy has his medicine, plus crayons, coloring books and a tv to help keep him calm. today marks a day of remembrance for nasa. it's the tenth anniversary of of the space shuttle columbia disaster. there will be an observance at the astronaut memorial at arlington national cemetery. a wreath laying ceremony at the kennedy space center. there will also be -- for those who died in the apollo 1 disaster, as well as the challenger 1 explosion. an emotional day at the state department. this is hillary clinton's last day as secretary of state. she will say goodbye to employees at a public ceremony. as for what's next for her, clinton has been rumored to be considering another run for president in 2016. nbc news's andrea mitchell says she's not sure what her future will be. >> i have no position on any of

groper. both attacks happened wednesday night in springfield. a 30-year-old woman was walking on dinwiddie street when someone approached her from behind, grabbed and groped her. 25 minutes latera a few blocks away a woman felt someone groping her. she screamed and the man ran off. the descriptions match the attacker in 15 similar assaults. d.c. police need your help to identify a man who kidnapped and groped a teenager. this happened in the 5100 block of nannie helen bur oaf oafs avenue. a man got out of his suv and forced her inside. he drove her a few blocks away, groped her and let her go. something you use to keep warm could be banned in d.c. if a local leader get her way. faith wheeler says she wants a citywide ski mask ban to deter crime. d.c. law makes it illegal for anyone over 16 to wear the masks while committing a crime.

but the attorney general says they rarely prosecute anyone under that law. still, wheeler says the ban could deter crime. >> it seems that ski masks are used fairly often in holdups and assaults. it's one of many, many, many tools that should be explored. >> people are allowed to wear headgear to protect themselves in the cold. >> we put this idea to the d.c. police as well. they don't see ski masks as evidence of someone's intent to commit a crime. virginia lawmakers are considering new recommendations to toughen requirements -- a school safety task force presented proposals to the general assembly in richmond. it recommended more record sharing and lockdown drills with students each semester. the task force said the idea of arming principals or security officers needs more time.

>> if we're going to put anyone armed in the school, train them. they have to be well-trained. i think everyone is in agreement. it's not perfect but the closest to that is a well-trained certified police officer or deputy sheriff in every school. >> the panel will issue a final report in june. governor bob mcdonnell created the task force in response to the newtown, connecticut shootings. tommy wells is thinking of running for mayor. he'll launch an exploratory committee. he won't definitely run for mayor in 2014. he does hope to make a decision this spring. current mayor vincent gray has not said whether he will run for reelection. melissa mollet is at the live desk with breaking news. >> well, good morning. viewers sending in cool winter weather pics for us this morning. we want to share with you. you can take a look. the first one is from a bruce town, virginia in northern

cnbc's jackie deangelis live with that. >> good morning, eun. the nfl is hoping that millions of people tune in to the super bowl on sunday to watch the ravens and the 49ers. but advertisers, of course, are also betting that viewers will stick around for the action between the action. ad prices are averaging $3.8 million for a 30-second spot this year. the lineup includes many of the usual suspects, budweiser, coke, pepsi and doritos. there are newcomers, including wonderful pistachios and got milk. the playoff can be huge. a survey shows half of game viewers will rewatch ads online and 40% will share favorites with friends and family on twitter and also facebook. meantime, companies could also get a big boost to their stock price research showing that their shares rise before and after the game. now, since 1996, super bowl advertisers have outperformed the s&p 500 index. that's the broadest gauge of the stock market by 1% from the

floons chan plans to change that commercial. we have two sides. the sexy side and the smart side creating a killer website represented by walter. together, they're perfect. >> some people say this go daddy commercial starring an israeli model and that guy is too hot for tv apparently. go daddy of course has had a history of provocative ads during the super bowl. the "today" show will have a look at some of the other ones a bit later on this morning. >> he must have really enjoyed that job. >> lucky actor. didn't have to pay him i bet. >> thousands of people are now joining the effort to get a ravens cheerleader who has been banned from the super bowl to new orleans. >> more than 27,000 people have signed a facebook petition demanding courtly lens be allowed to cheer on sunday. lens claims she was let off the super bowl roster because she gained weight. we're not talking about a lot of weight gain. less than two pounds through the season. the ravens are denying that

the bright white bands, you see them closer to washington. that's where it's snowing pretty hard. right now in fairfax county, northwest washington, southern montgomery and into howard county. a few scattered areas where it's snowing harder too in eastern howard and northern anne arundel and across prince george's county. southern anne arundel, calvert too. this is where it's snowing hardest, through washing tond and down 95. dale city to quantico. that band rapidly moving east. tapering off and ending now. it's north and west of washington where the road temperatures are below freezing. it is stuck to pavement and any untreated surface. but south and east, the road temperatures are above freezing. so it's melting on most of the roads and the pavement there. the air temperatures are a little bit below freezing in prince george's county, southern maryland near the freezing mark. north and west, though, it's in the upper 20s. we're going to have a cold day. whatever snow is falling and is stuck is going to be around for the rest of the day. right around washington and

northern western suburbs. most of it is ending now. a few more snow showers later this morning might put down 1 or 2 inches on the higher elevations. turning much colder mid-afternng gusty winds this afternoon. down to near 20 by midnight. by dawn tomorrow the teens. saturday afternoon near freezing and cloudy. maybe a few more snow showers late saturday night into sunday morning. still cold sunday and monday with a lot of clouds around. next week, warmer and a few more snow showers or flurries late tuesday into early wednesday. back with frequent updates throughout the morning. stay tuned. danella with a look at traffic. >> tom, in the first 4 traffic office, just coming in, in darns town, crash there. along turkey foot road. all lanes are blocked. the vehicle apparently knocked down a pole. there's wires on the road. the commute in that area. let's head to the beltway. we'll talk about delays growing.

going to toss it to tony tull. >> reporter: megan, good morning. we're pretty much dealing with the same thing as you are seeing there. we're at occoquan by 123. take a look and we'll show you the light. you'll get an idea of the snow coming down. a flurry of activity. as megan was mentioning, not a lot of accumulation. they have been treated in these areas. where we're at, it's too warm for the snow to stick. as you can see, it's wet. it's not freezing. if you're heading out this morning, make sure you treat it as if it's raining outside. again, grassy areas are seeing accumulation. even some of the cars in the parking lot we're at. they're seeing some accumulation as well. traffic, we've been looking at it all morning long, it's not been impacted. it's going to be a nonevent. be a little careful this morning. that's the latest from occoquan. back to you. let's go to the live desk now, melissa. viewers sending winter weather pix into the newsroom. we thought we would share.
