snow fell across the area tonight. started with flurries for most of the afternoon and then around sunset the flakes really started to fly giving us a light coating on our cars and on the ground as well. let's find out if there's more where that came and here's chuck bell with a first look at the forecast, right on schedu, right, chuck? >> absolutely, jim, this is two clippers in two days and another chance tomorrow and yet another chance coming up on monday. the first clipper that we dealt with a few hours ago the bulk is moving on out, still snow showers from western virginia and southwestern virginia as well but in and around town not a whole lot left going on. passing snowflakes and temperatures have come up since the snow stopped falling a few hours ago, back to the upper 20s and 30s. mostly cloudy skies and overnight temperatures tonight well back down into the mid-20s across most of the area. so, expect a very cold start to your super bowl sunday. we'll talk about h much of a

recovery we'll see and a little bit more about those snow chances in the coming days, see you in a few minutes, jim? developing story in boston. dozens of people had to be rescued from a charter bus after it hit a low overpass, the pictures show the firefighters taking passengers from the mangled bus before 58 tonight and not too far from harvard university. there were 42 people on the bus 34 of them hurt and they say one injury is life threatening. a man who has dealt with the effects of gun violence first hand spent more time drawing attention to the heated topic in d.c. darcy spencer with his survival story and what he says needs to change to keep people safe across the country. >> reporter: it may be hard to tell but this 25-year-old is a victim of gun violence. tonight he's hosting a party to celebrate the fact that he survived a bullet to the back two years ago. >> you know, it's one of those

things that after such a tragedy i wanted to make sure that i wasn't forgetting the things the blessings of i'm still here my friends are with me. >> reporter: but the party is also about raising money, money to support former congresswoman gabby giffords' efforts to enact stiffer gun controls. >> whether we are addressing mental illness or background checks all of them need to be addressed in an open forum. >> reporter: gakle was shot in what was likely a gang initiation. the gunman did not take his belongings and shot him even though he was not resisting. gakle still has the cell phone and wallet the night he was shot. this is the coat he was wearing with a tiny bullet hole right here in the back of the coat. this past week the gun control debate played out in a hearing on capitol hill. and givefords testified in support of universal background checks. >> you must act.

>> reporter: nra executives arguing against restrictions to the sec amendment. >> you'll never get criminals to go through universal background checks. >> reporter: gakle says he hopes to lend a voice to the debate and push for compromise across party lines. >> it's really something we need to address nationwide and it needs to be more of a conversation. >> reporter: in northwest washington, darcy spencer, news4. >> gakle says he's already raised about $5,000. he hopes to raise more than $12,000. and gun control will be the subject of a 30-second ad during the super bowl tomorrow. it will question the nra's decision to stop supporting background checks at gun shows. >> the nra once supported background checks. >> we think it's reasonable to provide mandatory instant criminal background checks for every sale at every gun show. >> the ad was paid for by mayors against illegal guns a group

co-chaired by new york city mayor michael bloomberg, a 30-second spot at the super bowl cost $3.8 million. and reaction to president obama firing a gun at camp david last summer. the white house released the photo about questions that the president's claim that he shoots skeet all the time. the nra responded writing one picture dock not erase a lifetime supporting every gun ban. the president travels to minnesota on monday to push for his gun control legislation. reaction from montgomery county. firefighters attacking heavy flames at this house in gaithersburg. video shows some thick smoke bill low i billowing out of the home. they think the fire started in the basement, and fortunately no one was hurt. and a woman rescued when firefighters pulled her from her burning home on price lane.

photos from the fire department show heavy smoke in the air. the victim was treated for injuries by paramedics at the scene. concern for some after the prince george's county fire department announced staffing changes. starting next month four stations will see a reduction in career firefighters while nine stations get an increase. volunteers at some of the affects stations and residents are worried the cuts could jeopardize public safety. >> it's going to affect our neighborhood terribly because there's not going to be neighbor around during the day. it's -- the volunteers can only be here so many hours a week because they have real jobs outside of the firehouse during the day to support their family. >> stations losing career personnel include seat pleasant, branchville andlan ham hills and they say that residents will not lose coverage with these changes. overseas now leftist military groups taking responsibility for a suicide bombing at a u.s. embassy in

a former superintendent for the d.c. public school system has died, dr. arlene ackermann died this morning in new mexico after a battle with cancer. ackermann served as the superintendent for d.c. schools from 1998 to 2000. she also held that position in seattle, san francisco, and philadelphia. dr. ackermann was 66 years old. d.c. police offering a reward tonight in a case they're now alling a homicide. 53-year-old emanuel campbell died thursday from injuries from an assault on january 17th in the 2000 block of maryland avenue. police are still looking for suspects as well as a motive. a man from the district is suing the d.c. government over his time at a city correctional facility last year, williams pierce was sentenced to 60 days on a simple assault charge. he's hearing impaired. the lawsuit claims he was not provided with an interpreter

more than 1,500 police officers are on the streets this weekend. just to make sure everything goes as planned. this, of course, the first time the crescent city has hosted the super bowl since it was slammed by hurricane katrina more than seven years ago. the city even moved some of its mardi gras festivities so this week could be all about the super bowl. the inventor of an iconic children's toy has died. we've learned that the inventor of the etch a sketch died last month in a paris suburb. the ohio art company discovered his idea at a toy fair back in 1959 and by 1960 it was the most popular toy in the country. and also got a lot of attention in the recent presidential campaign you'll recall after critics described mitt romney's positions as ever changing like an etch a sketch. an estimated 100 million have been sold. >> very nice. i had one as a kid. >> so did i.

and averaging only 6 miles an hour. sunday, temperatures in the low to mid-20s. passing flurries again a possibility but i don't think as much of a threat tomorrow as there was today and what little threat should be coming to an end around lunchtime and your afternoon plans should be pretty good. high temperatures tomorrow a little warmer than today. today we only made 32. tomorrow will be the upper 30s to near 40. that will also help the snow problem just a little bit tomorrow. might mix in a couple of raindrops and help, again, limit real snow potential for your super bowl sunday. on live doppler, a few passing light snowflakes in and around the capitol beltway, running out route 50 and headed out towards buoy, maryland and the bay bridge and not dropping anything in the way of accumulations. winter weather advisories in the mountains of west virginia they could see an inch to three and that's the only place that will see accumulating snow in the next 12 to 18 hours. cold all weekend for sure. it was colded to and cold again

if he could make the trip to collect the rookie of the year award because, of course, he had knee surgery not too long ago but he said he's been feeling good and walking for a week and a half or two weeks and you can see him on the red carpet, looked pretty good. i don't think you'll see him doing 40-yard sprints very soon but he said things are going well with his rehab process in pensacola, florida. how is the knee feeling? >> it's feeling good. i went through the toughest part and it's about being smart and not pushing it too much and that's what the doctors there for. >> reporter: alfred said he's there for you and he has to rein you in. >> i was ahead when i did it in 2009 and i'm a little bit ahead right now as well as you guys can see. i just got to make sure i be smart about it and, you know, think long term rather than short term. >> reporter: rg3 walking the are carpet, making the rounds and dan snyder was here as well as we told you earlier.
