there is safe. his abductor is dead. >> we have learned that a firm from d.c. is heading south to lead the investigation into how awful this unfolded. jim handley at the news 4 desk where police wrapped up a news conference. jim? >> reporter: here is what we learned tonight. first, foremost, little boy, ethan is in the hospital and is in very good condition. even laughing and joking with his family. tonight, authorities wouldn't go into detail about how that operation went down. but here's what we do know. police say negotiations were beginning to deteriorate between the suspect, jimmy lee dykes and authorities. police saw dykes with a gun. they felt ethan was in imminent danger. after 3:00 they decided to enter the underground bunker and rescue ethan. not clear how authorities stormed the bunker. witnesses say they heard two lou loud blasts. jimmy lee dykes was killed in the eration, we don't know by

video. erica. >> doreen, at one point, in the video, the woman, the manager of this group home here in columbia, maryland even threatens to kill the victim. 57-year-old donna everett is out of jail after posting $100,000 bond charged with multiple counts off sacount s of assault. the following video may be disturbing. >> reporter: taken inside the columbia group home that if relt managed and uploaded to youtube. police say last friday, emerge incorporated the company that runs the home for developmental, physical and mental health facilities called authorities and told them about the video. police showed up hours later and arrested everett whom you see here, spitting and punching this man. you can hear onlookers laughing.

mountain thousands. encountered dry air and fell apart across our region. we were never expecting much from this storm. we got less than that. i still expect to see a few flurries around part of the area. especially to the north and east now. but that is really going to be about it. temperatures, believe it or not. are the warmest they have been all day. 37 degrees in the district. right now. that's what we are seeing as far as temperatures. 32, 38. we'll talk about your morning commute. plus, we will talk what our next storm makes its way into our region. guys. >> thank you, doug. police are looking for four men responsible for robbery. that played out in front of shoppers at the pentagon city mall today. the guys used hammers to smash through a display case. at the zale's jewelry store. they stole 27 rings worth more than $120,000. then they jumped into a red car, broke through the parking garage gates to make their get away. >> strong criticism from the d.c. police chief about a report

about the department's handling of sex crimes. last month the report from the gr gra group human rights watch saying they failed to document or investigate 170 sexual assaults over four years. today, out of 1,200 victims the report talked to 15. the report excluded positive comments from victims about the police. >> try to tell them that the methodology they were using was wrong. what is that going to say to a young woman, or young person, or a anyperson, victim of sexual assault. are they going to want to come forward and report to police. >> our calls to human rights watch have not been returned. >> new jersey senator robert menendez is talking public low about the prostitution scandal that has plagued him for months. >> it is amazing to me that anonymous nameless faceless individuals on a website can drive that type of a story into

the mainstream. the bottom line is all of those smears are absolutely false. >> menendez replaced john kerry as chairperson of the senate foreign relations committee. back in november, a conservative website reported that menendez flu to t flew to the dominican republic on a campaign donor's jet to hire prostitutes in 2010. while he denies anything having to do with prostitutes, menendez did admit he initially failed to properly pay for the trips. >> students, applying to george washington university law school will be asked if they're gay. administrators want to track gay applicants to set up better support services. the story first reported by gw hatchet, campus newspaper. right now four of the top 20 law schools in the country ask students to disclose their sexual orientation.

>> final preparations under way for the ravens' super bowl victory parade. while the team arrived at the airport earlier today. workers were biz jeusy setting stage. risers put up at baltimore city hall. the parade will start there. then end up at the stadium where the players will meet the fans and show off the vince lombardi troph trophy. >> a police escort led six buses full of players, coaches and personnel around the beltway in traffic to underarmor performance center. players, smith, passed around the lombardi trophy on the plane. >> we did. everybody got a picture with the trophy. landed in baltimore. firemen at the airport. brought the trophy out. let them get a picture with it. amazing experience. glorious day for the ravens. >> most of his players slept on the plane ride home. they of course didn't get much sleep last night. as they went into the facility to grab personal belongings and head home for the off-season.

minor injuries. late tonight, mexico's attorney general announced the explosion that killed 37 people last week was not a terrorist attack. he says there was a build up of gas in the basement of the state run oil headquarters. that gas was lit by a spark from an electrical fault. the explosion collapsed three floors on thursday afternoon. the attorney general said there is no evidence of a bomb, explea sieve devi explosive device. >> burglaries are happening inside dorm rooms. shomari stone joins us from georgetown with details. shomari stone? >> reporter: doreen, a big problem across our area. and a bigger problem at george washington university and here at georgetown. now there have been five burglaries in the past week at several dorms. according to the latest public safety alert. a thief broke into a student's

room, and stole a laptop. today the same mo, another laptop. not just at georgetown. thieves broke in three residence halls at george washington university. stealing ten electronics over the last two weeks to be clear. the university spokesperson tells us, students let the thieves in. doors are secured by card swipes and the thiefs stole items from unlocked rooms. lap tops were stolen from the fulbright and j.b. halls. the police chief told the student newspaper, the j.w. hatchet, it is important that students make sure they don't let strangers in, which are tailgating behind them when they go into dorms. live at georgetown, i'm shomari stone. >> tonight we learned a former navy seal sniper may have been murdered for his truck. chris kyle his name. shot and killed at a gun range in texas over the weekend. he is the author of the

best-selling book "american sniper." about his deployment during the iraq war. accused killer a veteran, eddie ray ralph. he told police he traded his soul for a new truck. and they found ralph driving kyle's truck shortly after the crime. guard say they had to restrain ralph last night when he got aggressive in jail. he is reportedly suffering post-traumatic stress disorder. the spirit of a 15-year-old activist for women's educational rights remains strong. several months after the taliban tried to kill her. militants in pakistan shot youssef yin the head last fall. in a first video statement, she said she is alive thanks to good and all the people around the world who parade for her. >> the things they the my mission is the same to help people. and i will do that.

i think tomorrow back around the average mark. 37. current number. wind are calm. dew point is 20. one reason why that is, that effort made it to the surface. atmosphere too dry across our region. during the day today. a lot of the snow started out over the mountains. could not make it across into our area. 32, frederick. 36 manassas. 3, fredericksburg. looking at mild conditions. when you compare where we should be this time of year. temperatures on the mild side right now. they're going to be over the next couple days. so the coldest of the air that we have seen the last few days that is now out of here. the radar is showing some shower activity. coming down as light snow in parts of the region. most of this though, just not hitting the ground around waldorf. dent don't be surprised. watch what happens. the snow. over the mountains. just fizzles completely. we did see some flurries and light snow showers from martinsburg, frederick, over toward baltimore. right along the i-70 corridor.
