it's cold and wet out there. we should be thankful had morning. that's because up i-95 millions of people are bracing for an epic storm expected to hit new york up the coast. >> here is why. two storms converging to create a massive storm system. we are dodging a bullet here right in the middle of both of them. by tomorrow, boston could be buried by more than 2 feet of snow. >> the forecast cost a run at supermarkets, gas stations out of gasment airports are doing what they can. regardless of the planning, this storm will be crippling. a growing list of delays and closings. prince william, clark and frederick counties in virginia on a two-hour delay. winchester schools open one hour late today. fauquier, culpeper, warren, rappahannock and page county schools are all closed today. add to that list, orange county schools in virginia also closed. >> maryland, howard county public schools on a two-hour

delay today. in west virginia, jefferson county schools will open two hours late. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein tracking the storm. tom. it is going to be maybe an historic storm for boston. this is what it looked like in the blizzard of '78 paralyzing new england. this is route 28 like the beltway around boston. this is what it looked like. paralyzed thousands of cars. it took a week to get things cleared out. they had massive power outages as well. both of the storms will be combining to form this giant storm forming off of long island. blizzard warnings from long island to boston. right now, here it's all rain except the areas in white. now lingering lighter snows along the blue ridge, warren, clark, frederick counties in virginia. loudoun county in virginia. frederick county, maryland getting a little bit of that wet snow. most melting on roadways. closer to washington, in the mid-30s. around the beltway. just outside the beltway, some

locations there are near the freezing mark. the road temperatures above freezing. the it will be changing to rain in the nx hour or two. maybe an inch in the higher elevations. that light dusting to a half inch mainly on grassy areas. all rain the rest of the morning for the whole region and raining into the afternoon by noontime into the upper 30s. i'm back with frequent updates throughout the morning. situation changing minute by minute. i'll have your radar look and a look at the rest of the afternoon in ten minutes coming up at 6:11. now first 4 traffic with danella. good morning. still checking on a situation in northwest washington, d.c. fire departments on the scene of a fire. this is along decatur street between iowa avenue and arkansas. please avoid the area if you can. let's check on delays along i-95. it's friday, not bad. i-95 northbound as you make your way heading towards triangle, you are a bit sluggish.

near dumfries pretty clear. just a bit slow here. your average travel speed in quantico, not bad at all. it will take you 31 minutes to the beltway. eun, over to you. thank you. 6:03 now. some of you are waking up to slushy snow. tony tull is live in leesburg with more on the winter weather. good morning, tony. >> reporter: it may be deceptive as you mentioned. folks are waking up, and looking out their window in leesburg and thinking that it's really coming down. if they take a closer look, especially at roadways and sidewalks, you'll see that the temperature as tom has been saying is a little too warm for this stuff to stick. it's pretty much a slushy mess in the roadways. if you are headed out put a little time on your commute. treat it as a wet roadway. we have had folks come through on the way to work and school. not a big problem. a lot of people going at a normal rate. if you're headed out, shouldn't be dealing with too much as far as leesburg is concerned.

if you take a live look, you can see on the ground, it's more of a slush than anything else on the pavement. we haven't encountered any icy spots as tom has said the temperatures are above freezing. that's the latest from leesburg. we do have flakes falling but not accumulating. back to you guys. >> tony, thank you. arlington, a live look at reagan national airport where anxious travelers are trying to get out before the storm. more than 3,000 flights now canceled through tomorrow. i know that firsthand. reagan says they've canceled more than 100 flights just today. dulles scrapped more than 80 flights at this hour and bwi has about 40 cancellations. you might still be able to get to new york city by train. amtrak says northeast service still on a normal schedule between d.c. and new york for now. the big apple will be the end of the line. service between there and boston will be suspended just after noon today. at least that's the plan for now. amtrak says service in

connecticut, new hampshire, vermont and upstate new york will also be stopped later today. right now, more than a thousand police officers continue a manhunt for a former l.a. cop wanted for killing three people, including a police officer. last night investigators found christopher dorner's burned out pickup truck outside l.a. near a ski resort as well as footprints leading from the scene. dorner is wanted in the shooting death of a couple last weekend and for ambushing four officers yesterday in two incidents. the one of the officers died. he posted an online manifesto warning he would go after the officers responsible for firing him from the force in 2008. police are trying to track down the man they say robbed a woman at begun point on the university of maryland campus. this happened at a parking lot near the chemical engineering building last night. the victim had a vague description of the robber. we can tell you that she says he pulled a gun on her and made off with some cash, gift cards and

some other items. also new this morning, prince george's county police are questioning people outside the hanger club. they found two women suffering from stab wounds. they were taken to the hospital. we do not know their conditions right now. so far police have made no arrests. prince george's county police are also investigating a deadly shooting overnight. officers responded to a call at the fire department on richie marlboro road. they found a man shot outside of the firehouse. police believe the man was shot at a different location and was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. police are still looking for a possible suspect and motive. let's go to the live desk with melissa mollet with breaking news. >> two stories just into the newsroom. eight people are dead after a bombing at a market in northern pakistan and 12 people killed in shootings at two health centers in nigeria. apparently several of them are

welcome back. a huge winter storm is moving up the coast. right now boston is starting to see some of the first flurries. the weather channel's mike seidel is in revere, massachusetts, hes nest of boston. mike, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning from revere beach outside of downtown boston. we've got our first flakes. the real storm, the real show is

going to be later today, tonight and saturday. we're expecting wind up to 70 miles per hour. there are blizzard warnings for seven state. the entire state of connecticut is under a blizzard warning. this could be a top five if not the biggest snowstorm on record at logan airport. 27 and a half inches ten years ago. the infamous blizzard of '78 dropped 27 mchs and we're just celebrating the anniversary of that prolific storm this week. as far as mass transit goes in boston, they're shutting everything down at 3:30 this afternoon, including their train, the t. all schools closed ahead of thisment airport cancellations, over 2300 systemwide. the new york city city hubs, laguardia, jfk and newark canceled over 1500 flights. eun, it will be next to impossible travel situation from midday today through tomorrow. it will be sometime tomorrow afternoon before the snow wraps up. luckily for you in washington, mo worries.

eun, back to you. >> mike seidel, thanks so much. 15 after the hour right now. students in prince george's county will not be seeing a controversial anti-bullying video anymore. that 21-minute film represents a controversial therapy that tries to turn gay students straight. students at six middle schools watched that film in health class. though the county won't say which schools. a spokesperson says the video was pulled because it didn't provide enough information about bullying prevention. this morning, we're getting a new look at the man police call a serial groper. police released this new sketch yesterday. investigators in springfield believe the man is behind 18 different gropings in just five months. in most cases, women reported being grabbed as they walked down the street. police say the investigation is slow going because there is no surveillance video and no forensic evidence. it appears we'll remain in the dark when it comes to new developments in the chandra levy murder case.

a judge ruled that the hearings involving ingmar guandique continue to be closed to the public and the media. there have been a number of hearings in recent weeks which could be a sign of a problem with his conviction. prosecutors say the hearings should remain closed because of safety issues. the judge says the details of the proceedings will eventually be made public. we continue to follow breaking news out of iraq. sunni insurgents may be behind a series of car bombings in and around baghdad much at least 31 people were killed and dozens of others wounded in four blasts. the bombers targeted outdoor markets in predominantly shiite areas. the attacks came as tens of thousands of sunnis, protested today against the shiite-led government. president obama will host a farewell ceremony today for defense secretary leon panetta. one of his last acts as secretary was testifying before the senate armed services committee. they discussed last year's deadly attack in benghazi, libya and says budget cuts slowed down

america's response to the attack. the looming sequestration on march 1st would cause more damage to the national defense strategy. 6:17 now. the sluggish economy may be taking a toll on young adults. they are the most stressed out americans according to a new online survey. americans between 18 and 33 say they have more stress now than a year ago. more than half of them say stress is causing them to lose sleep. doctors believe these young people's finances are at least partially o to blame. >> many of the young people have come out of college or graduate school with horrendous school debt. the job market, there are not very many jobs. this has put their life plans probably on hiatus. they may be postponing marriage, postponing having a family. >> who are the least stressed americans according to the survey? it's the so-called matures who are 67 or older.

this morning, the makers of the oscar nominated film lincoln are responding to criticism about an inaccuracy in the movie. yesterday morning we told you congressman joe courtney of connecticut wants the film corrected. he said congressmen from his state were wrongly depicted as voting against the 13th amendment which outlawed slavery. screen writer tony curb ner says while courtney is correct, they also changed the names of the lawmakers. they made the change to illustrate how the amendment passed by a narrow margin. the caps are skating on extremely thin ice after yet another blowout loss. just four days after falling 6-3 to the rival penguins, washington fell hard again to pittsburgh 5-2. the caps completely unraffled in the second period giving up all five goals in 12:00. they netted -- they return home tomorrow to face the florida panthers. >> tries to throw it up.

it catches -- hope john is okay. >> turns out hockey reporters are pretty tough too. rinkside reporter was hit on the knows nose during a rangers game last night. he did not run to the locker room. he stayed between the glass and reported while getting cleaned up by the rangers head trainer. he finished reporting on the rest of the game. wow. comedian stephen colbert reaching across the aisle to democrat. the popular fake conservative talk show host will address the house democratic issues conference in leesburg. minority leader nancy pelosi invited colbert to the retreat. i don't think he'll be singing there. colbert will also have the tables turned on him as pelosi will interview the comedian. she said "this is his attempt at bipartisanship." >> you never know. he might be inspired and sing. >> we've seen him give her a hard time on shows as well. time for weather and traffic

on the 1s. meteorologist tom kierein with us. >> we appreciate our friends and twitter followers giving us reports on snow falling this morning far west of washington. getting reports of several inches from culpeper to fauquier and loudoun county. mostly on the grassy areas. most temperatures are above freezing. it's a slushy accumulation on the roads. it's a mix of rain and snow. changing over to all rain over the next hour or so. elsewhere, all rain all morning. the areas in the wrel owes and oranges coming down pretty hard. the eastern shore, ha heavier rain will stay east of the metro area. a cold rain at that. it's just a little above freezing. montgomery, arlington, fairfax, prince george's county and the district now. we'll climb to the low to mid-40s later this afternoon. the rain will be continuing and ending by sunset. windy tonight into saturday morning. maybe a few flurries too. near 40 degrees saturday afternoon and 20s in the morning. mid-40s -- partly cloudy with a

a winter storm is bearing down on the northeast. major concerns about power outages and gridlock. up to 2 feet of snow is possible. around here a collective sigh of relief. this is about as bad as you can find. wet streets, some slushy roads. but no major problems out there. >> good morning. welcome back to "news4 today." i'm aaron gilchrist. i'm eun yang. here is the latest on that potentially historic blizzard. new york city could see a foot of snow. boston could be buried beneath twice that amount. the snow is only one concern. winds ko could whip up to 75 miles per hour in some places. airlines are taking no chances. they've canceled more than 2600

flights already. a list of school delays and closings keep growing by the minute. we have more than 30 delays or closings. here are the major school systems in virginia, loudoun, prince william, clark and frederick are on a two-hour delay. winchester schools opening one hour late. fauquier, warren, rappahannock and page county schools closed today. add to that list, orange county public schools in virginia also closed. in maryland, howard county schools on a two-hour delay. jefferson schools opening two ours late. you can find the list on the bottom of the screen. >> storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein tracking the storm. >> where the schools are closed or delayed, he got accumulating snow on the grassy areas. several inches in parts of rappahannock, fauquier into loudoun county. now, where you see the pink, it's a mix of some rain and snow. we also have had a few reports of some sleet from manassas

towards ashburn, sterling. we're seeing, though, generally the warm air pushing aloft. the snow to rain. elsewhere, it's been rain. these a prince george's county, st. mary's northern neck, moderate to heavy rain. the beltway in washington, generally light rain in most of montgomery county, prince george's, arlington and fairfax where temperatures are generally above freezing. where they've had the snow, there is one narrow band where temperatures are above the freezing mark. around the beltway, montgomery, arlington, fairfax, prince george's, generally a couple of degrees above freezing with a cold rain. the cold rain staying with us all the way into the afternoon. by noontime, temperatures should be in the upper 30s. i'm pack with another update in ten minutes. a look at first 4 traffic on this friday morning now with danella. >> we'll start with the rails. a minor delay on the marc.

train number 407. the delay is eight minutes because of a minor mechanical problem. expect delays up to ten minutes. metro, vre no reports delays. if you're traveling along decatur street in northwest between ottawa avenue and arkansas, please give extra time and use caution. over to 66 eastbound at hay market. right here, route 15. that earlier accident is gone. you may still see delays in the area. elsewhere, it's clear. fairfax county parkway westbound as well as eastbound. no incidents to report. even inside the beltway it's clear. it will take you 13 minutes to get to the capital beltway. a live look at dpleglebe. thank you, danella. 6:32 now. you can see on radar, we'll probably dodge the worst of this winter storm. that doesn't mean we're spared

completely. snow is starting to fall across our area. tony tull is live in leesburg. tony, good morning. >> reporter: eun, good morning. i think you used the best word possible that we dodged this. as you can see now, what we have that was snowflakes has turned to a drizzle. i want to give you a live look. here's on leesburg pike in historic leesburg. you can see the road conditions are wet. too warm for the snow to stick and accumulate. as you can see, folks heading out to work this morning. heading where they have to go are taking their time. traffic is moving along quite nicely. if you take a look near the live shot, you can see that we're just dealing with a slushy mess. if you're headed out this morning, treat it as wet conditions. there could be slippery, icy spots. we don't foresee any here in leesburg pike. we're dealing with a little bit of drizzle. we suspect this will, as tom says, turn into rain. we were dealing with snowflakes for the last two hours.

it's all gone now. that's the latest from leesburg am back to you. tony tull live in leesburg. a powerful winter storm creeped closer to the east coast while you were sleeping. this should give you an indication of what this storm will bring. it dumped more than half a foot of snow in southern wisconsin leading to dozens of accidents. things will be worse in the northeast. road crews are scrambling to treat road before the blizzard arrives. we're hearing that boston could be buried beneath 2 feet of snow before it's all over. tom kierein here with more on the impact of the storm. >> right now -- >> first i want to show you live pictures from new york's times square. a little light rain falling there. maybe wind picking up as well. already all the airports in that region have canceled about 1500 flights. they it that yesterday actualliment we're going to have more on what they'll see in that part of the country just ahead. forecasters say that the approaching winter storm could

actually be an historic event for boston and it arrives days after the anniversary of a major blizzard. 35 years ago this week, 27 inches of snow pummeled boston. on top of that debilitating snow, the city saw 79 mile per hour winds and tides. 16 feet above sea level. as you can imagine, the approaching snow has a lot of people remembering this historic snowfall and getting ready for the worst. jay gray live in boston. several feet of snow could be on the way there. >> reporter: you're absolutely right.aaron. that picture says it all. that snowstorm crippled this city and there's concern we could see similar conditions throughout the day today and into the evening. fo feet of snow is likely to fall in the boston area. so as you talk about people getting prepared, getting their batteries, flashlights, rock salt, the things they will need during this storm and then also the groceries they'll need,

water, bread, the things that will sustain them over a couple of days. with the strong winds expected, that could be a few days without power as well. so no one wanting to take any chances. making sure they have everything ready. the emergency operation teams are in full swing at this point. they've got the sanders ready, they're fueled up. really trying to get out ahead of the storm first of all. but then focused on getting back out when they can and helping to dig out. which is going to be a difficult process. schools, businesses already closed in the area. the mayor of boston says he wants everyone off the streets by noon here and for everyone to stay in unless they absolutely have to get out for some type of life threatening emergency. he says the best plan is to stay in and to stay in through the weekend. it looks like it's going to be a rough go. back to you, aaron. >> jay gray, live in boston. thank you, jay. hundreds of thousands of people are waking up wondering if they're going to be changing their plans. in five minute a live update and

this is a live look now inside reagan national airport. long lines already at 6:40 in the morning. folks trying to get out of town before the winter storm really takes hold along the northeast. we'll have a live report for you from the airport in just a moment. let's check the forecast in our area right now. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein here. good morning. >> we've got a hodgepodge of different types of weather happening simultaneously in the viewing area. the moderate to heavy rain. the areas in orange, red, yellow south and east of washington. in the metro area, it's generally light now it's mixing with rain and sleet in these locations. weave had reports of several inches of snow changing over to rain in fauquier, loudoun, into

frederick county, maryland. the rest of day, these temperatures are a little above freezing in the metro area. will gradually climb. right now in the low, mid-30s. we ought to be hitting near 40 degrees by noontime. it's going to taper off and end during the afternoon. but then strong gusty winds drawing in some cold air tonight for your friday evening. winds could be gusting around 40 miles an hour. might even have a few flurries flying through the air. the strong winds into saturday as well. we'll look at the weekend and look at the first part of next week coming up in ten minutes. now let's look at traffic with danella. >> good morning. tom in the first 4 traffic office seeing reports of fender benders. remember the roads are wet. give yourself extra time. crash there blocks your right lane. heading down to i-95 just past route 1 as awe head northbound, a live look there. fire department on the scene of an accident blocking the right side of the roadway. possibly involving a truck that

you can see. fire department police all on the scene. delays in this area, about a mile right now. giving you a look at i-270. we're going to talk about some congestion. it's not bad. but because roads are wet, give yourself extra time. a live look in shady grove from southbound to the beltway, you're clear. northbound, no issues at all between frederick and the beltwayment aaron, over to you. >> thank you, danella. this major storm causing major travel trouble up and down the east coast. thousands of flights already canceled. we expect the numbers to swell throughout the day. news 4's megan mcgrath at reagan national airport now where passengers have had a frustrating morning. my flight was canceled at noon yesterday. people saw this coming. >> yeah. people saw this coming. people are trying to change their plans. the bottom line is we're going to see a number of flights canceled this morning. later into the afternoon and things are progressively getting worse. over is 00 flights at reagan national canceled at this point

already. take a look at the line. folks trying to get out before the weather takes hold. the airlines doing their best to shuffle people on to earlier flights. we've encountered a number of people who canceled their own flights trying to get out of town earlier if at all possible. early this morning, we spoke to a gentleman who actually was trying to leave early but was having trouble. when we first encountered him, he was doing battle with his airline. we encountered him a little later on. asked him if he had any success. >> i'm on stand by for the 6:30 and i'm on a 7:30 instead of a 9:30. i'm not 100% sure they're not going to charge me $150. i received my boarding pass to show -- she already ripped it up. that i actually did get on the plane in seat 2a in first class. >> what's the deal with the change for you?

forecast. cnbc's bertha coombs tells us who it could help and who it could hurt. good morning. >> good morning. likely see light volume trading when it comes to wall street today. a lot of folks will probably leave early and try to get out ahead of the worst of the storm. even up in boston as well. that's where a lot of the mutual funds are locatelocated. oil prices are holding steady this morning ahead of the massive storm. expected to dump 1 to 2 feet of snow? the northeast. the big issue in natural gas, we're producing so much of it, we have a lot in storage. we didn't have as big a drawdown in the report from the government that we saw for the last week. this week we're likely going to see a lot of demand for gasoline. a lot of folks stocking up. i know in long island, a lot of foex folksy know are making sure they have enough to run generators in case lipa has power outages.

just hit off the solomon islands. no word at this point on damage or injuries from this particular quake. this comes after wednesday's quake where 19 people were killed. it generated a 5-foot high tsunami. damaged dozens of homes and businesses add left others missing. the area is so remote that we're just getting this video in now. before the first quake, many villagers had headed to higher ground as a precaution. at the live desk, melissa mollet, news 4. 6:47 is our time. more than a thousand police officers involved in a manhunt for a former l.a. cop wanted for killing three people, including another police officer. last night investigators found christopher dorner's burned-out pickup truck two hours outside l.a. near a ski resort. his home was raided in las vegas. dorner shot and killed a couple last weekend and then ambushed four officers yesterday in two incidents. one officer died. police warn dorner is armed and dangerous.

says she was walking through the lot kk near the chemical engineering building after 10:30 last night when a man pulled a gun on her. she says he took cash, gift card and other items and took off. the man could only give detectives a vague description of the robbers. >> they have four people in connection to a double stabbing. officers found two women stabbed outside the hanger club on old branch avenuement they were taken to the hospital. we do not know their conditions right now. so far, no arrests have been made. prince george's county police also investigating a deadly shooting overnight. officers responded to a call at the fire department on richie marlboro road. police believe the man was shot at a different location, he was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. police are looking for a possible suspect and motive. >> 6:49 now. a local teen is listed in critical condition after being hit by a cab that kept going.

this happened last night on wheeler road in oxon hill. the teen did not use a crosswalk. neighbors and witnesses called police after the crash. one witness gave police such an accurate account of what happened, they were able to track the driver down at the southern avenue metro station. no formal charges have been filed against the cab driver. police say he's cooperating with the investigation. >> this morning, a teenager will learn his fate after shooting a classmate outside a d.c. high school. brandon smothers is guilty of shooting another student several times after an argument last -- the victim suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. the argument was reportedly over who was better dressed. police say security sent the boy home earlier in the day but he returned and shot the other student. she was a civil rights pioneer and prince george's county activist. christine jones will be laid to rest today. the former maryland state delegate died after rescuers pulled her from her burping home in temple hills. she was the first
