bomb explode. he's been waiting since 2009 and he had a donor. replaced two of his arms. now he has his arms. as he said, it's so important in speaking and talking and gesturing to have these arms. and the likelihood is that he's going to be able to use these arms to tie his shoes, to do activities of that nature. >> will they ever function like his previous arms did? to that degree, will they ever function as if they were his arms from birth? >> sure. probably not. but again, he's not going to be able to do plastic surgery but he is going to be able to grab a fork, use a cup, tie his shoes, important functions. he's going to be able to do definitely mandatory-like needs, life needs. what role did transplanted bone marrow play in this? >> keith, this is another great advance. not only did they use the donor's arms but they gave keith, they gave brennan the
11:37 am
bone marrow which now rejection is the big problem. and in this keeps him from rejecting or helps him keep from rejecting the arms. >> so six hours of therapy a day. >> right. >> how big a part of recovery is that? >> really important. first of all, these arms, they have to wake up. they have to come alive. and therapy can help that happen. it can help soften the scar tissue. it helps with range of motion. it even helps in the generation of nerves and vessels. >> so you talked about the face transplant to start our segment. now we have the double arm transplant. what's next? where do we go from here? >> i don't know. the opportunities seem endless here. the interesting thing is that this, as you know, was funded by the department of defense. they're very interested in doing things that help our returning veterans because they're seeing so much tremendous injuries. trauma medicine is so incredible now people are surviving these injuries. now we have to have a way to put them back together.
11:38 am
>> doctor, you call him a medical miracle? >> he's a medical miracle. he has a great heart and i think we're going to hear a lot more from brendan in the future. >> thanks for breaking it all down. >> pleasure to be here. the time now, 11:38 right here. still to come, a young virginia girl's fight against cancer and the blood drive she has inspired. plus, a meal that may inspire love. food idea for valentine's day. it's coming up quick. it's next thursday. stay w

11:44 am
we really enjoy working with them. >> how do people find out how do give blood? >> we have a blood drive at the woods community center. this sunday february 10th from 8:00 to 4:00. we are really thrilled to be partnering with the burke center community. they provide all the space for us and all of the news to get it out atto the community. >> there are some blood types that are more lothian others. you need others. not everybody has their blood type. how do you tell people to come out and at least get typed so they know when they're really needed? >> so anybody that comes and gives blood we will do a blood type for them, send it back to them in the mail in the form of a donor carded. and we're always short on type "o" blood. >> that's the universal donor. >> yes. anybody can receive type "o" blood and we're always short on that. and because we overuse it in our hospitals. it's in all of our emergency settings.
11:45 am
so we really would love the "o" donors to come out and help us out. >> well, i think you for joining us. we had one of your members, one of the first ones who called us up and said, can you talk about this. hey, sadie. do you want to say something to everybody out there who donated blood for you? do you want to say thank you? >> thank you. >> well, we're so happy that you're here to say that with us. thank you all for coming. >> thank you. >> good luck with your valentine blood drive. >> thank you. it happen on sunday. keith? >> a small precious gem to small gains this morning on wall street. let's check in with cnbc's jackie deangeles. she has that and the rest of the business headlines. >> keith, good morning. stocks are higher on this friday even as a nor'easter heads wall street's way. the dow is up 42 points at this hour. meantime, oil prices are holding steady ahead of the massive storm that is going to dump one to two feet of snow this
