we're going to get extreme blowing certainly in drifting snow. we could get 8, 10-foot drifts. the other issue is high tide. not only this evening but tomorrow morning around 10:00. this area typically has this wide beach at low tide. they have a ten-foot range versus ocean maryland where you typically get a 3 or 4-foot range. it's going to get higher and higher. 2-foot surge tomorrow morning. beachfront property should be okay. in marshfield, south of here, police departments have told folks to evacuate because those homes are right on the surf. they're expecting 25-foot breakers there and a surge as high as 3 or 4 feet. some protection, 12 to 14-foot waves. again, hurricane-force wind gusts and a lot of snow. this is going to be one that you'll be talking about for a long time like they've been talking about this week on the 35th anniversary of the blizzard of '78. it's going to be a long night. it's going to snow until midday tomorrow, jim and wind down and

everybody can dig out. they've said stay off the highways or you could get arrested back to you. >> slippery roads led to a 19-car pile-up in maine. this accident happened this morning. police say the multivehicle crash started when one car spun out of control. the chain reaction crash shut down an area of highway for hours. it took about four hours to clean up the mess. only one person taken to the hospital. they're expected to be fine. chief meteorologist doug kammerer continues our coverage. what kind of effects will we see from this? >> we are going to get some effects. as we've been talking about, the last couple of days, it will be minimal for us. boston area, phenomenal pictures where mike seidel to the east of boston. for us, you can see where that snow is. boston, new york, coming into the philadelphia area now. for us, we're seeing light shower activity in the form of some rain showers. we even saw the suncom out. over the next 12 hours, the biggest impact is going to be

the wind and much colder temperatures. we have a wind advisory in effect through 6:00 a.m. tomorrow. winds could gust upwards of 50 miles per hour. the area in the brown there, including loudoun county, northern fauquier, towards frederick county, maryland and everybody back to the west. winds could gust upwards of 40 miles an hour and that will put windchills in the 20s by around 11:00 tonight. if you're going out this evening, get ready. the wind is making it way in right now. we'll see windy conditions at 8:00, 11:00, through tomorrow morning. 5:00 a.m., 7:00 a.m., 29 to 30 degrees. the windchill will be between 15 to 20. we are seeing impacts. for us, though, it's going to be the cold air. i'll let you know about a couple of other things going on. yes, maybe a couple other storms. we'll talk about that in the seven-day forecast. >> see you then. travel delays and the airports and train stations because of the storm obviously. the situation isn't looking much better for the near future. >> transportation reporter adam tuss is live at reagan national

airport with the latest on conditions, service and frustration. adam? >> reporter: jim, forget about getting to new england tonight. we're being told it could be a couple of days before things get back to normal because of the storm. you can already see the impacts here at reagan national. >> luckily, i got out. a lot of other flights weren't so lucky. >> that's what you hear when you talk to people coming in from the entire northeast today. look at the departure board to places like new york, boston or providence where the snowfall totals could be measured in feet and you can see nothing will be coming or going. brian jones much germantown waited for his wife to get in from boston. her airline actually got in touch with her about leaving early. >> they contacted all of the people scheduled to fly today. i understand it and offered options to switch seats. >> airport leaders hearsay people headed to the northeast need to be ready to wait. >> clearing the snow from the runways will be a significant

task at those airports. it will also be a significant undertaking for the airlines to -- for some, a canceled flight means getting creative. >> andrew and helen from long island couldn't get out of new york, they took an amtrak train here to d.c. and now they catch a flight out of bw marshall to get to their cruise which leaves from florida. >> we started at 4:30 this morning out of long island into penn station, the amtrak down here and now we're going to the airport. >> amtrak says it does expect to pick up extra riders that now have canceled flights. virginia wet roads and slick conditions this morning forced schools to start a couple of hours late today. luckily the temperatures stayed above freezing. nothing stuck to the roads. fortunately, it was more of a rain event for most of us here in the d.c. metro area. and stay with storm team 4 for continuing coverage of this massive snowstorm. we have live reports from boston

in just a few minutes. within just the past 30 minutes, power was restored in prince george's county. this comes after as many as 50,000 people lost power for much of the day. it was all thanks to a fallen tree. most of the outages were in the central part of the county. our bureau chief, tracee wilkins is live with the latest. tracee. >> it was an amazingly crazy day for parts of prince george's county. folks who did not have power and businesses as well. a large number of the schools as well. after a long day of a lot of folks being in the dark, as you said, pepco, they believe all the power has been restored. >> the power outage experienced in prince george's county was so widespread that at its peak, 50,000 customers were in the dark. >> lost power around 11:30. i tried to cut all utilities and things like that. it didn't work. >> pepco officials say a tree landed on a transmission line in a deeply wooded area.

causing the massive outage. it knocked out power to four substations. it caused an evacuation at a shopping center and nearby homes. the safe way's generator kicked on and caused an underground tran former to shake and smoke. >> we're told by pepco transmissions in the unlikely event of an explosion, it would be powerful. >> the loss of power also affected this dialysis center. this woman said she had just dropped her husband off for his treatment. >> as soon as i got home, they called me and me i had to compaq and pick him up. when i got around here to the turn right there, i had to keep straight on through. >> neighborhoods throughout central and southern prince george's county were impacted causing power to go out at 30 county schools. the central high school students described what it was like in their school. >> the principal came with the flashlight and directed

everybody. >> officials decided it would be best to keep students in the school. this elementary school parent questioned that decision. >> they should have called. >> to give you the option to pick the kids up? >> exactly. >> prince george's county school officials say that they decided to leave the kids in the school because with so many houses without power and then the dark intersectio intersections, they did not think putting the kids on the road was a good idea. as it turns out, most schools got power back up before the end of the day. i'm tracee wilkins, news 4. former prince george's county councilwoman was released from prison last week after serving one year for her role in a corruption scheme. it was spearheaded by her husband who was former county executive jack johnson. he remains in jail. when the couple was arrested in 2010, leslie johnson tried to hide thousands of dollars in her undergarments. she also admitted flushing a $100,000 bribery check down the toilet. johnson served her sentence at

alderson prison camp in west virginia where martha stewart served her time. we're following a developing story out west where the hunt continues tonight for christopher dorner. he's the former lapd police officer accused of three recent murders. some reported sightings today have not panned out. authorities said they don't know if he's in that southern california mountain where they've been focusing a teng tension for the past two days. they vow to stay there for now. his burned out pickup truck was found yesterday. dorner is suspected of targeting police officers and their families out of vengeance. tragedy for a prince george's county family. they want to know why a young father died so mysteriously. someone drove the dying man to a volunteer fire department on richie marlboro road and then took off. news 4's pat collins live in capital heights. pat? >> reporter: wendy, he was shot, he was in bad shape. he was dropped off at this firehouse by a friend.

a friend too scared to stick around. >> i got a call first thing this morning. i was woken by the detectives calling me and letting me know they were on the way to my home. and as of right now, i still want to believe that it's not true. >> sorrow at the thompson home in pan tal en. the family gathers to mourn the loss of charles thompson. he was 27 years old. the father of two small children. he had a job, he was going to school. he was shot to death early this morning. >> you always think that they will bury you and here i have to prepare to bury him. >> it happened this morning shortly after midnight. a man drives a car to the volunteer fire department. he parks the car in the lot over here and then he gets out and runs to the front door of the

firehouse. he rings the doorbell and then tells a firefighter inside that a man in the back seat of the car, he need some help. and then that friend, that so-called friend of the victim, he runs away. in the back seat of that car, in the parking lot of this firehouse they find charles thompson. he had been shot in the head. they take him to the hospital. he's pronounced dead there. >> this afternoon, police back at that firehouse looking for evidence in this unusual case of murder. where did the shooting happen? why did that friend runaway? turns out the car he was driving was stolen. there are a lot of questions here and tanya thompson, she wants some answers. >> as any mother would, we just want information. i would like to know what my

live with the situation. it's picked up quite a bit since an hour ago, jay. >> yeah, jim, wendy good to talk to you. you can hear the wind blowing trying to stay out in front of the storm. the snow blowing sideways. at some point they will have to move inside until this thing passes. unfortunately, the wind really picking up now, unfortunately, it looks like these conditions are going to continue a bit longer than first anticipated. the blizzard warning in this area has now been extended through 1:00 tomorrow afternoon. so there are so many millions of families who are going to have to deal with this through the weekend and now likely into monday or tuesday. there's a big concern about power outages because the wind is going to reach hurricane levels in some areas. a lot of people prepared for this going to the hardware stores, to the home improvement

stores, getting what they need, also at the grocery stores. a lot of the shelves were empty. people stocking up. realizing they're going to be holed up for quite some time. the good news is it looks like people are paying attention to this. there's a driving vban across te state issued by the governor. i'm looking at the bridge across the harbor. i've been checking it over the last couple of hours. plows, sanding trucks and emergency vehicles. the good news is everybody is inside right now. back to you. >> all right. jay gray live there in boston. we said earlier how we dodged it. >> we did. >> in for a long haul there. >> at least the next 24 hours. you know, i got to say, i for one a little jealous. but there's a lot of people saying thank goodness that did not hit our region. boston is really going to see a lot of snow from this. at least a foot. most likely around 2 feet for the boston area. they're going to get the brunt of this storm. new york getting hit hard, not as hard as originally forecasted. that's good news for the new

york area. let's look at our forecast and see how we're dealing with things here. look at this. a pretty nice sunset. the sun making its way through the clouds. it's starting to make its way down. sunset around 5:37 tonight. 5:38. we're going to see a few more things happening over the next couple of hours, even in our area. even though we've got the biggest impact, we're still going to continue to get impacts overnight tonight. take a look at what's going on tonight. some rain and snow in the northeastern portions of maryland. a few light showers around coming through town and down around the potomac. towards fredericksburg. these were rain showers. we won't see any more of those. those will quickly move on through as the system moves to the north and east. this is a combining of two systems. for boston, the combination really doesn't mean a whole lot except for adding more moisture. for new york and philadelphia, these two storms need to come together in order to give philly really significant snowfall, imt. i think it will come together a little too late. their totals will be way down. maybe the 3 to 5-inch range

rather than a foot like places new york, pboston will see. over 6 inches in new york. there's that three in philly. of course, nothing for us. up towards boston, over 2 feet of snow. potentially upwards of 27, 28 inches. the wind, this is something we will not miss out on. look at the winds near boston. over 50 miles per hour gusts. for us, over 40 mile an hour wind gusts. in new york, winds up there upwards of 30 to 40 miles an hour. lot of people out and about in new york. you know it's time square and tomorrow night, saturday night live. you know who is performing tomorrow night? jim handly knows. >> yes, i do. justin bieber. he's hosting and singing. >> they're camping out in the blizzard with no plans to leave. that is some bieber fever for sure. as far as our weather concerned, what we're going to be dealing with over the next few hours, it's the gusty winds. gusts to 50 miles an hour

through 6:00 a.m. we have a wind individuaadvisor effect. here's what to expect tonight. winds picking up after 6:00. the strongest winds will be early in the morning. really around 11:00, 12:00 tonight. we'll see those. gusts to 40, 50 miles an hour in some spots. it's going to be april windy night. it's going to be a cold night. if you're going out tonight, be ready for the cold and the wind. by sunday, winds start to calm down. temperatures around 45. 56 on your monday with rain likely. 54 on tuesday. a chance of rain or snow on wednesday as we head into valentine's day. this storm could get interesting. we're going to continue to watch that. as far as sunday is concerned, that's the best day of the weekend. not only that, could be the best day in the next seven days. we'll see calming winds and also partly sunny skies. sunday looking pretty good there. we're going to continue to watch this storm move on out. once again, tonight, it will be the wind. just know and be ready for those. >> thank you, doug. a bold armed robbery on the

another look at the storm slamming the northeast. governors in massachusetts, new

york, connecticut and other states declared a state of emergency. in massachusetts, the governor has ordered all vehicles off the road for about 90 minutes so far. the storm is already being blamed for this pile-up in maine. and airlines canceled more than 4,000 flights. amtrak suspended northeast service between new york and boston. doug is back with a look at conditions now. doug? >> we didn't miss out on this totally. we did around the metro area. that storm well up to the north and east. take a look. loudoun county, rappahannock, culpeper, all saw snow. this is in the round hill area. towards loudoun county. western loudoun county. about 2 to 3 inches in that area. look at the radar. as you can see, that storm system continues to pull away from our area. what's coming in behind it is going to be the windy conditions. we'll be seeing those winds gusting upwards of 30 to 40 and even 50 miles an hour in parts of our region. so the snow not a factor for us. it will be the wind overnight and the very cold temperatures.

windchills by the time you wake up tomorrow morning, between 10 and 15 degrees in some spots. cold air moving in right now. i'll update you on what to expect the rest of the weekend coming up. police in annapolis confirm they found the body of a toddler allegedly killed by her mother earlier this week. they searched 95 tons of trash in dumpsters as they looked for 2-year-old cassidy booth last night. her mother, chelsea booth, according to police confessed to smothering the child and throwing her in one of the trash bins. she said her daughter was possessed by evil sports according to the court documents. she's held on murder and child abuse charges. two people who died in that massive apartment fire. a neighbor took this video on tuesday morning. the victims are 51-year-old glynn williams and 56 year oiled diane too good. it took 70 firefighters to contain the fire. the bodies were discovered when

crews were finally able to get inside the building. the victims are believed to be squatters. a hacker claims to have gained access to the private e-mail accounts of several members of the bush family, including both former presidents. the smoking gun website reports the hacker published private photos and sensitive information from some of those accounts. one photo appears to be the former president george h.w. bush during his recent hospital stay in houston. we're not going to show those photos because they appear to have been obtained illegally. a spokesperson for both former presidents says a criminal investigation is under way. the white house laid out a long lis of the damaging effects of across the board budget cuts called sequestration. if congress lets the automatic spending cuts take effect on march 1, it means furloughs and layoffs affecting teachers, federal agents and prosecutors. government agencies, such as the irs and the fda and the department of agriculture. they would suffer.

of course, this could impact northern virginia. as david kolber reports, you -- >> sequestration, worse than you can imagine. >> the single greatest threat to national security is budget uncertainty. >> virginia's two senators sharing one podium today in front of the technology council in northern virginia. senator mark warner adamant about sharing the blame of sequestration. he said it's not just politicians at fault for the crippling spending cuts. he blames major companies and the defense industry too. >> when it's oh, my god, it's really going to happen, what are y'all going to do. it would have been great if you had been in the fight in more than an attaboy way over the last couple of years. >> the looming cuts already forcing northern virginia's government contractors to react. >> they're already laying people off. they're furloughing employees already. they're already reducing their capital purchases. >> more than 207,000 jobs would

be cut across virginia. some 71,000 of those outside of the department of defense. brad angel is president and ceo of salient federal solutions in fairfax, one of many government contractors feeling the crunch from government clients. >> they're starting to not only develop plans but take some actions that are reducing the level of spending. >> this is one of the government contractors preparing for the across the board cuts. the ceo tells me it's not just his industry that's affected. it's all of northern virginia. >> you can't affect that many jobs in our region and not see it affect every other part of the community. >> it's a trickle down effect. it's going to effect every company to those working in a restaurant business. >> dusty winds is ceo of knowledge consulting group. his contracting company, tired of uncertainty. >> it's the only thing that's certain is there is unconcern at this and you have to deal with it. >> david kolber, news 4. a d.c. teenager will spend eight years in prison for

shooting a classmate after an argument. that happened last year outside coolidge high school in northwest. as school was letting out, 17-year-old brandon smothers was charged as an adult. the injuries were not life-threatening. security officers sent smothers home after arguing with the victim earlier in the day. but he returned with a gun and shot his classmate. the race to save a dog takes a dramatic turn. we'll tell you why doctors found the only way at a local clinic was to take a chance in the operating room. >> we'll have a live report

say student robbed at gunpoint in the heart of the university of maryland campus. tonight the whole campus is talking about it. >> the school is sending out a campuswide safety alert. this is the third robbery on or near campus in the past couple of weeks. julie pen sbenson has the lates this campus crime. >> this is unusual. no one can remember a gunpoint robbery happening this far inside the campus perimeter. parking lot kk is a small area tucked in between academic buildings on the university of maryland's college park campus.

the area has a number of security cameras with blue light emergency call stations. but last night about 10:40. a female student had a frightening experience here. >> she was approached by a man, unknown to her, he displayed a handgun and demanded her personal property which she complied with. he was wearing a mask so she couldn't see his race or identifying features. >> within minutes, it was the subject of a campuswide alert sent to the phone and computer of every student and faculty member. it was lifted around midnight. the robbery occurred two days after a similar crime near the train tracks that crossed the parkway off campus. >> there's no indication right now that these are related. that possibility does exist and that is being looked into. we're working closely with the prince george's county police on both of these cases. >> police are cautioning students not to walk alone at night, either on or off campus.

a dog found starving on the side of the road is recovering at a local animal shelter. she got lucky. her journey paved with many good people doing the right thing and a cautionary tale for you dog owners. >> good girl. >> her name is esperanza. that's spanish for hope. it was a combination of hope and

luck and generosity that brought her to the washington animal rescue league. >> she's one of the skinniest dogs i've seen alive. >> esperanza was skin and bones. found on the side of a road in rural south carolina. >> she was eating road kill and she was fighting off vultures. >> the rescues in that state couldn't help her but wanted to. they shipped her to the league in washington which thought some food and affection o do the trick. >> every animal is an individual. we want to do everything that we can to help as many as we can. >> but food wasn't helping. esperanza got worse. they made the call to operate to see if there was a problem. that's ayris ki procedure. >> we basically did surgery because we didn't know what else to do. >> the doctors discovered the problem. something common lodged in her intestine. >> when esperanza was starving she ate corn cobs. corn cobs can be lethal to dogs.

>> it's not that unusual for dogs to eat corn cobs and that's something that your viewing public might want to know, never give your dog corn cobs. this is not the first dog we've taken that out of. >> she's now doing quite well. slowly gaining weight and ready to be adopted. >> she came in one of those really special animals that you never forget. she came in and even though she was in horrible shape, she was loving and affectionate. >> her ribs are still a little close to the surface but she's a lucky dog who now has more than hope for a good life. right now the storm pounding the northeast. some areas could get several feet of snow. airlines in our area and across the country have shut down all service no the northeast. >> we'll find out the impact on our area over the weekend.
