megan? >> reporter: well, you can see the police tape encircle this home on holly avenue. we also have a police officer stationed out front. he's been here all night. we are expecting investigators to return here and take another look at the area to figure out why the man died. [ inaudible ] >> we'll go back for more on the story. as she mentioned, police will be back on the scene today looking into how this elderly man died. breaking news out of south africa. olympic sprinter and double amputee oscar pistorius is behind bars after a deadly shooting inside his home. police in south africa say a 30-year-old woman was shot and killed inside the gold medalist's home this morning. south african news agencies report the woman is pistorius' girlfriend. agencies report that pistorius may have mistaken her for a burglar. he's scheduled to be in court

later this afternoon. today in the district, attorneys will be back in court discussing tightly guarded developments in the chandra levy murder case. ingmar guandique serving a 60-year sentence in the death of the d.c. intern. sources tell news4 new evidence in the 2001 murder account taint some testimony. today's hearing will be conduct ted judge's bench to keep courtroom observers from listening to conversations. today a maryland family will hold a funeral for a baby girl. a 14-year-old killed his 7-month-old sister last week at their home in white oak while baby sitting. according to court documents, the teen beat the baby, then suffocated her when she wouldn't stop crying. family held a memorial service last night. today's funeral will be at st. callamus catholic chung in silver spring at 10:00. metro's board will get to the bottom of issues facing the agency. the safety committee will get a report on last month's green line meltdown. thousands were stuck in a tunnel or on dark trains for more than an hour because of a problem

with the third real. the -- third rail. the real estate committee will look at a plan to build nbc 5's new headquarters on land metro owns near the greenbelt station. in the next hour or so, we expect to get word that mailers and usairways -- american airlines and usairways will merge. don't expect changes overnight. the justice department and judge in the american airlines bankrupt case have to approve this. when it is said and done, the usairways name will be phased out and the new airline will be the biggest in the world. both airlines have a major presence in our area. passengers and employees we talked to say they're concerned about the long-term impact. >> the biggest concern i guess amongst the rest of the employees now is how seniority lists are going to merge together. >> american is -- is -- any experience has been rather bad. so i prefer not to try them. i'll stick with united. >> so what does this mean for you, the passenger? the two airlines will continue to operate separately for several months. if you're a frequent flyer,

american and usairways' programs will combine and unused miles are expected to carry over. nbc news has learned that general john allen may pull his name from consideration for nato's top job in europe. the white house nominated allen to take the job of supreme allied commander, but his confirmation was delayed in november after it was discovered he exchanged inappropriate emails with a florida socialite. those emails were part of an investigation that brought down former cia director david petraeus. military sources say allen does not want to put his family through more discussions about the scandal. a pentagon investigation cleared allen of any wrongdoing in that case. today president obama is expected to detail his plans to expand high-quality preschool education. he introduced the initiative during his state of the union address tuesday. the president will hash out his plans at the college heights early childhood learning center in decatur, georgia. georgia was the first state to offer voluntary prekindergarten to all 4-year-old regardless of a family's income. the president is expected to detail how he would fund

pistorius was his 30-year-old girlfriend. this is her facebook page. the paraolympian is being charged with murder. steinkampf of shot dead at his home early this morning. some outlets report that the double amputee known as blade runner may have mistaken her for an intruder. he's expected in court later this afternoon. we'll keep an eye on the story for you, of course. the manhunts for former lapd officer christopher dorner may be over, but the investigation is far from complete. detectives are now looking into what caused the cabin dorner had barricaded himself in to go up in flames. police say they fired teargas inside the home on tuesday. the cabin caught on fire a short time later. officers say they heard a single gunshot and police found human remains in the burned out building. they are still working to confirm that the remains are, in fact, those of dorner. a husband and wife that dorner held hostage on tuesday are breaking their silence about the terrifying ordeal. karen and jim reynolds say the

nightmare began when they went to their mountain cabin to clean it out. when they arrived, they found dorner inside. they say he aimed a gun at them, tied them up, and stole their car. the reynoldses say they knew all along that the intruder was one of the most wanted men in the country. >> we saw so many pictures of him. actually, while he talked to me, he said, "i know you've been seeing the news. i know you know who i am." was explaining currencies. >> police eventually spotted the stolen car which he crashed. they say he then ran into the woods and into the cabin where the standoff with police took place. as for the reynolds, they're happy to be alive. new this morning, south korea says it has developed a missile that can strike anywhere in neighboring north korea. take a look at video here. south korean leader showed when they made that announcement. military leaders say the cruise missile can strike the offices of leaders in rival north korea. this comes days after the north announced it had a third successf

because of that, australia has blocked a visit by north korean diplomats seeking to reopen an embassy. the united nations has struck out in its attempt to find out if iran is building nuclear weapons. investigators from the u.s. atomic agency returned from iran without a deal on how the investigation should be conducted. this comes as the "washington post" reports it has evidence iran is speeding up its plans to build weapons. according to the "post," iranian agents secretly tried to buy from china 100,000 magnets that are used in centrifuges. if this report is true, iran would have enough magnets for 50,000 new centrifuges which help enrich uranium. that is five times the number it frates right now. -- operates now. there's a new medal used for fighting in drone wars, troops who launch attacks that can kill or disable an enemy. defense secretary panetta approved the establishment of the distinguished warfare medal. the red, white, and blue ribbon will be given to individual for

extraordinary achievement in military operations after september 11, 2001. unlike other combat medals, honorees do not need to risk their lives to receive it. the white house now has a fight on its hands over the president's call to raise the minimum wage. he called on congress to hike the wage from $7.25 an hour to $9. house speaker john boehner says that would reduce the number of jobs available and make it harder for small businesses to hire. the president fired back yesterday at north carolina saying reviving the economy means workers need to make a decent living. nchlthsz this morning, major wildfires forcing many families out of their homes in australia. leaders believe lightning strikes sparked at least 16 fires on tuesday. they issued an emergency warning and evacuated families from their homes in western austra a australia. the fire's destroyed more than three homes and scorched more than 8,000 acres. more than 200 firefighters are battling the flames. more federal help to those affected by a massive tornado in

mississippi. president obama signed a federal disaster declaration. a powerful twister with 170 mile-per-hour winds touched down sunday. it did damage to the university of southern mississippi and more than 800 homes. the declaration will help state and local agencies in their recovery efforts. it may also provide grants to help business owners and individuals rebuild from the storm and provide temporary housing. he's already banned large sodas and other sugary drinks. now mayor bloomberg wants to outlaw some of the containers the drinks come in. he's proposing a ban on styrofoam. the mayor will announce had his final state of the city speech. story foam is tough to recycle, and 20,000 tons gets into new york city's waste system every year. los angeles and san francisco are already adopting similar bans. a popular energy drink will no longer be labeled a dietary supplement. monster energy drink will be just a drink. its new label will list nutrition facts instead of

supplement facts. the label will also include calf teen content. the ceo -- caffeine content. the ceo says the change corresponds with federal guidelines it must follow. this follows five deaths associated with the monster energy drinks. one of those deaths happened in maryland. a live debate turns into an all-out brawl on georgian television. two opposing politicians got heated on the georgian public television show appropriately named "arguments." this was on wednesday. the man on the right goes on a rant about how his opponent is a snake, the moderator tries to ease tensions. then is that -- glass is broken. they get in each other's faces, punches fly. somebody had to break it up. both were escorted away. >> tough job for the moderator. good news for the housing market. last month will number of foreclosures clopped again.

realty trac says auctions and repossessions dropped 7% in january and down 28 since january of last year. improvements are attributed to a better economy and fewer homes on the market. right now, a few more hours to go for thousands of passengers struck at sea. their vacation cruise has been more like a name with little to no food, no electricity, and barely working bathrooms. news4's jay gray live in mobile, alabama, where the ship will pull into port today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, aaron. yeah, this is where they should reach land sometime this afternoon. passengers have described this as a disgusting trip. one that's been very difficult. as you talk about, lack of real food, of running water. only a few working restrooms. no air conditioning on this ship. a lot of people said to have moved their mattresses out into the hallways or up to the deck to try and get some relief. and that's been very difficult to find. over the last day or so, cell phones losing their charge and no way to restore that charge, a

north and west of the metro area. this photo taken by our own melissa mollet who bravely walked up to her screen door and took a picture of her deck. that got a nice little light coating there. it does d stick to the grassy areas, but not to the roads. the roadways are wet this morning. unfortunately temperatures have dropped to near freezing. that's created icy spots across northern virginia and much of maryland including montgomery, arlington, fairfax, and prince george's counties. maybe some icy spots in northwest washington, as well. and we're going to stay here right near the freezing mark for another couple of hours. but then by mid morning, we'll be above freezing. by noon, near 45 or so. by mid-afternoon, ought to be near 50 degrees. then on friday, increasing clouds, morning lows, near freezing. afternoon highs tomorrow, though, low to mid 50s. then friday night, we might get some perhaps light rain. that may change over to snow after midnight friday night into saturday morning. still not sure if we'll get accumulation. there's a possible accumulation from that.

>> thank you. where we want to go, guys? all right. not even kim kardashian and kanye west can bypass airport security. the stars were on their way back from brazil to los angeles on tuesday when an employee allowed them to skip a security checkpoint during a layover at jfk airport in new york. a transportation security administration spokeswoman says the airline employee did not follow procedure. once tsa agents realized what happened, they gave the couple a private screening, delayed the flight about an hour. the use of emergency contraceptives like the morning after spill on the rise. a new study says one in nine women between the ages of 15 and 44 who are sexually active have used the pill. half of those surveyed said they used the pill after unprotect the sex. others said they used it because a condom broke or they were worried their birth control method failed. the study found white women and more educated women use it the most. experts say it's public more

at the scene in the light of day, to try to piece together what happened here, find clues in the death of this 94-year-old man. police are calling this a suspicious deaths. they say that just before 7:00 last night, the man's stepson who also lives at the home, he returned to the house and made the discovery. he found his stepfather dead inside, suffering from trauma to the upper body. this is a quiet street in the del rey section of alexandria. there isn't much violent crime in this area. quite a shock to people who live here. although i should mention that this is not far from the scene of a high-profile murder that happened nearly ten years ago. nancy dunn, weast of the then--- wife of the then-alexandria sheriff, was found murdered in her del rey home. again, here on the scene, still a police officer stationed out front. we are expecting some activity later this morning. and of course we're going to stay on top of the story, bring you the latest developments as soon as they occur. reporting live in alexandria, megan mcgrath, news4.

14-year-old brother last week in white oak. the teen was baby sitting and beat and suffocated the girl when she would not stop crying. the family held a memorial service last night. today's funeral begins at 10:00 at st. camilla's catholic church in silver spring. d.c. police looking for a man on a bike who apparently sexually assaulted a woman. this attack allegedly happened around 6:30 tuesday morning in the 4400 block of galt place in northeast d.c. police say a man on a mountain bike rode up to the woman. he pulled out a gun, forced her behind an empty house and sexually assaulted her. she was able to get away and called police. if you have information, call d.c. police. d.c. police also need you to take a good look at this surveillance video. it shows a man wanted for robbery. police say he pulled a gun on two people in an alley off t street and robbed them. this happened a few blocks from the u street metro station just before 7:00 monday morning. the thief apparently had a full face mask on and a gray hoodie. contact d.c. police if you can help find him. there were quite a few empty

seats at the d.c. fire chief's state of the department address. last year, dozens of firefighters symbolically turned their backs on chief ellerbee's response to his plan to change their schedules. this year, they just didn't show up. ellerbee says he knows the changes he is trying to make are not popular. but he says he will continue with plans to modernize his department. today, metro's board will try to get to the bottom of last month's green line meltdown. that's one item on the board's list of discussion points at their meeting this morning. it's safety -- its safety committee will get a report on the third rail issue which left thousands of riders stuck in a tunnel in dark trains. the real estate committee will also look at a proposal to build the fbi's new headquarters on land metro owns near the greenbelt station. a possible compromise is in the works on two different plans to raise transportation money in virginia. the state senate approved a bill to generate a billion dollars a year in revenue. it would raise the gas tax by a nickel and give local cities and counties the option of raising

their sales tax by 1%. virginia governor bob mcdonnell backs the house plan. it would scrap the gas tax altogether and raise the sales tax statewide by .8%. both versions now go to a committee made up of state senators and delegates for possible compromise. 5:50. a bill to change the way virginia teachers are evaluated heads to the desk of governor bob mcdonnell. in richmond yesterday, house lawmakers voted 75-25 to pass the bill. the measure allows school boards to extend teacher probationary periods while requiring annual evaluations and allowing a teacher to be fired after one bad appraisal. a bill to make cpr certification mandatory for high school students has passed virginia's house and senate. it goes to the governor where it could become law. the bill is named after gwyneth griffin. her parents say she was born with a congenital heart defect. she collapsed on the school track on june 8. she died seven weeks later. >> when she collapsed until the time when someone could get there with that someone being my

banks will never make it to a courtroom. cnbc has more on the story and more. good morning. good morning. a federal judge has dismissed an antitrust lawsuit accusing these mastercard and three big banks of conspiring to fix atm fees. the plaintiffs included several individual consumers, as well as owners of independent nonbank atms. the lawsuit claims visa and machtercard set rules barring atm operators from offering lower prices on their independent debit card networks. now most of these are found in places like convenience stores and gas stations. the judge says despite the plaintiffs' insistence that consumers were being overcharged, the court simply couldn't find enough evidence to support that argument. and some good news for you and your money. your 401(k) account is growing fast thanks to the rising stock market and matching contribution was your employer. fidelity says the average 401(k) balance rose 12% last year about
