>> announcer: news 4 midday starts now. >> a busy morning across our area for firefighters. the most serious incident an apartment fire in restin. we'll tell you why the case is being called a homicide. good morning. welcome to news 4 midday. i'm barbara harrison. >> i'm keith russell. just minutes ago we learned an early morning fire in fairfax county is being investigated as a homicide. firefighters found the victim inside a burning apartment just after 6:00 this morning along waterside view just off the fairfax county parkway. derek ward has more on the investigation. >> this started out as a call to

the fire department. a neighbor reported smoke in the building, but when they got here it quickly turned into a death investigation. firefighters were called to the apartment complex at 6:04 in the morning. when they got here they found smoke coming from a second floor apartment. the fire was put down quickly. in the parking lot they found a victim -- an unidentified female. authorities confirmed the person died. >> the fire marshal's office a and the police department will be working the investigation jointly. they are working the death as a homicide. >> it comes as a shock to residents, many of whom were at first unaware there was an emergency. >> i live on that side of the building. i came out my door and i see all this commotion. i really had no idea. >> the fire was contained to a single apartment. the first responders had to force their way into the apartment when they got here. that means the door was locked. whether or not that factors into the investigation remains to be seen. the identity of the victim has not been released.

derek ward, news 4. >> a fire heavily damaged a housing unit in the naval research laboratory in southwest d.c. the fire started around 9:00 this morning in the area of the base known as belleview and spread to another building. no injuries were reported. firefighters are investigating a fire in a business. the fire broke out around 4:00 this morning at a check cashing business along frederick in gathersburg. no one was hurt. it is not clear what caused the fire. the fire closed the streets for a time. they have since re-opened. investigators say there was a house fire that critically injured a 4-year-old girl in the district. firefighters rescued her early today at a house in the 2600 block of 33rd and southeast. the house is split into apartments. two adults and a child were taken to the hospital for smoke

inhalation. police took custody of a man who argued with another man at the time of the fire. >> since it's presidents day, metro trains are operating on a saturday schedule. buses are on a saturday supplemental schedule. several stations on the orange and blue lines are closed for track work. the minnesota avenue and deanwood stations on the orange line are shut down. morgan and largo on the blue are also shut down. metro was running extra trains between shady grove and nom noma gauladet. >> the 90th annual george washington parade going strong. it starts at 1:00 this afternoon. this year's parade features bands, floats and reenactments. also a free open houses. if you're going shuttle buses are running between the eisenhower metro station and the parade route until 4:00. if you're going out there, you

better bundle up. it's cold in spite of the sunshine. storm four meteorologist tom kierein joins us now. >> we have had sunshine but it hasn't warmed us up. temperatures just past 11:00 are getting to or above freezing. reagan national, 32. much of prince george's county near 30 degrees as is maryland near the bay. south and west into the mid 30s from prince william county south. stafford and sponsylvania near the freezing mark as is the rest of northern virginia including louden county into schenn endo with a valley. out of the mountains, locations above freezing as is the central valley. it was down to 13 in stanton. now up to 36. the winds, they have settled

down. the wind chills are not as bad. we only have a wind around five to ten miles per hour. around dawn they were gusting around 20 miles per hour. we might get a wintry mix tomorrow. we'll look at that and the rest of the week. the seven-day forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, tom. >> the coming days an autopsy is expected for country singer mindy mccready. it appears she committed suicide yesterday afternoon. she had numerous run-ins with the law. her former boyfriend and father of one of her children was on the "today" show. he said his son zander is in foster care and needs to be with his father in florida. >> you know, zane, you know, i don't know what's going to happen with zane. if he goes to ft. myers it's only an hour and a half difference. i would like to keep the boys brothers together and try to turn my son's life around. he's had a rough first six

years. >> she was committed to a treatment facility this month. her boyfriend and father of her other children died. she was 37 years old. police are looking for the killers who stabbed a university of maryland eastern shores student. 21-year-old ed monday st. clare was stabbed on campus saturday night. police say he was a passenger in a car when three or four people were walking on the street and approached them. a fight apparently broke out. st. claire was stabbed and he died. his girlfriend chelsea joseph, shown in this picture, tells news 4 st. claire and his brother borrowed her car to get something to eat with a friend. she said she saw him. >> he loved his family.

>> friends tell news 4 st. claire was a popular d.j. on campus. he posted several videos on youtube. he attended high point and laurel high schools in prince george's county. police haven't identified suspect es. >> the time now 11:07. coming up on midday, was the pope trying to send a message during one of his last public appearances? why some say the language he used is a clue to the person he wants to take over for him. >> and how watching television can change your child's behavior.

five people are dead and several injured after militants attacked a government office in northern pakistan. police say four militants stormed the compound and three of them detonated their suicide

vests. the they were dressed as policemen which is how they got inside. so far no group is claiming responsibility. it is suspected the pakistani taliban is behind this attack. meantime, republicans are warning president obama not to move forward with his own immigration reform plan. they are furious the white house is drafting legislation even if lawmakers try to hammer out proposals of their own. nbc's tracie potts has more from capitol hill. >> i'm happy with the with president. he's given us the space. i'm optimistic we can get something done. >> reporter: other lawmakers here are warning president obama to back off after someone leaked a white house proposal that would immediately protect 11 million illegal immigrants and allow them to become citizens within eight years. it does not guarantee what republicans want -- border security first. >> that tells us he's looking for a partisan advantage and not a bipartisan solution. >> this is the president torpedoing his plan. it shows me he's really not

serious. >> reporter: the white house says its proposal is a backup plan for the group of eight democrats and republicans working behind the scenes on a compromise. >> if those do not work with out we'll have an option that will be ready to put out there. >> reporter: republicans insist the leak was no accident. >> does the president really want a result or does he want with another chance to beat up republicans so he can get political advantage in the next election? >> reporter: the gop says the white house proposal would be dead on arrival if it came up for a vote today. congress won't be back until later this month. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. >> the debate over gun control is heating up in chicago after two high profile murders of young women. friday night an 18-year-old woman was gunned down hours after her sister sat on stage behind president obama during a gun control speech he made in chicago. jamie mac far land was shot friday in north chicago. her mother says mac far land wasn't the intended target. police are questioning two

people of interest. >> tell congress to support common sense reforms so no more innocent children are killed and no parent has to go through this heartbreak. >> reporter: a new gun control psa is hitting the airwaves featuring the mother of the chicago teen who was shot and killed after performing at the inauguration. that's the mother of hidaya pendlet pendleton. mayors against illegal guns paid for the ad. the 16-year-old was gunned down in chicago last month. >> venz's president hugo chavez is back in his country. he arrived at a military hospital this morning. chavez announced his arrival saying we have arrived again. thank you, my god. for the past two months the 58-year-old has received treatment. he has not spoken publically

beginning to get above freezing. so is much of the eastern shore. this afternoon, these are the expected highs. should make it up from the low 40s around washington, far northern suburbs near 40. eastern southern suburbs near 40. farther south and west. many locations should hit the mid 40s by mid afternoon. for the afternoon hours we'll have the temperatures begin to drop back by 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. back to the upper 30s. mid 30s by midnight with cloudses. a front will be approaching tomorrow as it moves in in the morning there may be a brief wintry mix. maybe a little bit of snow, a little bit of sleet. mainly the shenandoah valley west. light rain in the morning and off and on in the afternoon. should be milder in the upper 40s near 50 tomorrow afternoon. as we get into wednesday and thursday, another area of cold, dry high pressure moving in. we'll be down to mid 20s

right now police are investigating a homicide in

fairfax county. the investigation started when a fire broke out in an apartment along waterside view drive in restin. police say a woman pulled from the burning apartment has since died as a result of a homicide. the victim's name has not been released. >> if you haven't filled up recently, get ready for pain in that pocketbook. gas prices jumped 16 cents from a week ago a in the district. pump prices are up all across the region. news 4 is live with the higher gas prices. tony, what are they like? >> reporter: they're actually higher all over, nationally gas prices are going up. not one person we talked to was happy about the gas prices. one lady paid $3.65 in gathersburg, but two minutes later it was $3.75. this is the citgo station. $3.75 is about the going rate for a gallon of regular gas in

montgomery county. aaa says gas prices have gone up for 32 days straight. you can imagine if there is a price hike we'll see it translate into a price hike at the pump. reason two, this is interesting. a lot of refineries shut down f for maintenance. we we'll see another increase. how about our region? for d.c. -- in fair lakes shopping ent isser. $3.66 for regular. and the wawa on crain has it. in montgomery county we found a steal of a deal at the sunoco

off goshen road. $3.65 a gallon for regular until 9:15 when the price went up ten cents. everybody was with pretty upset including this guy. >> came back 15, 20 minutes later and it's $3.75. >> reporter: the managers said they are following corporate orders. don't be mad at them. i want to put it in a little bit of a perspective for you here. in turkey they are paying $9.96 for a gall on of tax. in italy, $9.05. in france, $8.65 for a gallon of gas. so we don't have it that bad here. but everybody is feeling the

flight. the boy's mother says altitude change caused her son to start crying and huntly, who appeared intoxicated used a racial slur before slapping the 19-month-old child in the face. she and her husband say huntly wasn't even arrested immediately. >> people saw it happen. you know, it just seemed like it would be an easy thing to do. i think we were both pretty disappointed by that. >> according to his attorney, huntly will plead not guilty to federal simple assault charges. >> olympic sprinter oscar pistorius is set to appear in court on charges of murdering his girlfriend. miss tore use remains in custody at a south africa police station. he's accused of shooting his model girlfriend in his home last week. despite the murder charge, a judge is like ohly to grant him bail. so he'll be a free man until his

trial date. >> it is unusual for someone in his position having fixed assets, not being a flight risk and handing in his passport that it will take time because of the forensics involved for the matter to go to trial and keep him in jail would not be in the interest of justice. >> pistorius's agent cancelled all of the sprinter's future events saying he needs to focus on the charges against him. >> a clerk who improperly maintained the list. a federal court in mobile tried to block the incorrect list from being used. that requires permission from here in washington. critics say the law is outdated. >> people in florida got quite a show as a meteor shot across the southern part of the sunshine state. take a look at the video from

around 7:30 last night. people describe it as orange or red fireballs in the sky. scientists are calling it a sporadic meteor and say there is no threat of anything fall out of the sky like was the case in russia. >> meanwhile in russia, scientists say they have discovered fragments of last week's meteor. workers found pieces of a rock in a small lake and tests conclude the fragments did, indeed, come from outer space. the shock wave injured more than a thousand people and damaged thousands of homes and businesses. >> people in russia are trying to capitalize selling pieces of the rock on ebay. some pieces are going for around $1,000. this isn't the first time a meteor rite has brought in collectors. last year director steven spielberg bought a piece of a 1960 meet rite. >> the u.n. is studying and discussing the potential threat of more impacts on earth.

see you inside. >> moms and dads everywhere, get out a marker and a calendar right now. the lottery for tickets to the white house easter egg hunt opens this week. starting thursday. next monday. the white house expects some 35,000 people in this year's egg hunt. winners will find out march 1 the egg hunt is april 1. improving your preschooler's behavior could be as easy as changing the channel on tv. that's according to researchers in seattle. we are getting a look at the results of the study which appear in today's edition of the journal of pediatrics. they asked more than a 500 parents to log what kids watched on tv and monitor their behavior. after six months kids who watched positive shows like sesame street as opposed to violent shows were behaving better. after a year kids were watching more tv than before the study but were watching more positive

shows and were with behaving better. that's good news. >> getting back to an exercise routine is hard after you have had a baby but it can be helpful for new moms. kim weeks is here to explain. good morning. you brought someone with you who is a new mom. >> brand new mom, a student of mine. >> this is erin. nice to have you with us. your baby is 3 months old? >> right. >> we saw her in the green room. she's so beautiful. she didn't come in because we were afraid if she woke up she might cry. what's good about yoga after birth? >> yoga is about the core and stress relief. as all new moms know those are the things we want the most, stress release and core. >> getting rid of the belly. >> you're doing well. >> she's doing great. >> what are some of the things you should do. >> i will have her stand in the center of the mat. with nursing, holding the baby,

take your arms up, just open the shoulders. she's standing hands to feet. lifting up like this can help you open up and feel good and open up the shoulders. >> drawing in her tummy? >> that's a great question. as a matter of fact you do it better if you pull in your tummy and lift up. it's the core that helps you open your chest. >> how long do you hold the pose? >> as long as it feels good as a new mom. you can take your hands down. she'll turn this way to show the one that for me with my two children who are 3 and 1, a lot older, it seems, than hers. >> still young. >> pretty young. but it's far away from 3 months. this is where holding a baby becomes stressful for your body. she's stretching out the back which gets so tight. >> did she practice yoga throughout the pregnancy? >> she's been doing it for several weeks, probably a month

or so. since six weeks out post partum. >> how soon after the baby can you begin? >> the protocol is four to six weeks. >> you can come up and sit down for the last one. of course c-section you need to wait longer. at least three weeks to a month longer. >> we have with another pose. >> this is a pose for the core. i was happy to show it. mom, as we know when you have a baby it's your new body. >> work on the tummy. >> she's doing a modified version. we have shown it before with legs straight which she's not going to do. right now she can't. she has to pull the body in, pull in the core post-bea, her sweet baby. >> is there any reason she can't start if she's nursing. >> the sooner you do yoga the better. the sooner you take care of your body the better. >> all right. thank you so much. erin, thanks for coming in.

although i'm committed, before i wasn't, i couldn't stand women who name dropped. i don't care who you know. name dropping is out for you as well. >> i think it reveals a shallow person. someone you don't want to date. >> that's just ruling people out. how do you keep it spicy for the people who have the relationship that's really committed and going strong. look at three ways. >> to revive the passion you need to get out of your couples box. everybody is used to their habitual things they do. try something different. >> like a trip? >> no. i think you have to get the adrenaline going to get the passion back in a relationship. try sky diving, something exciting. >> appreciate your partner. besides just saying "i love you. >> take the time to realize every day. what you have in front of you. >> wedding pictures. we'll go back down memory lane?

>> pull out the photos, wedding video, the whole nine yards. remember what it is that attr t attracted you to that person. >> last question, what do you do for a person with unrealistic expectations. the man who doesn't look like brad pitt but wants angelina jolie or the woman who doesn't look like angelina jolie and wants brad pitt? we have people over estimating themselves in terms of what they are looking for. >> we go through an exercise of wants versus needs. i say who is the person at the end of the day you call when you have had a bad day. why do you call them? what kind of personality traits do they have that make you call them. that's what you should have in a partner. that's what you should be looking for and a little bit of coaching to make them realize what's important in a relationship. the qualities you should be looking for. >> we can definitely get coaching from you. thanks for the advice on
