congress and white house have ten days to reach a deal on a spending bill or spending cuts take effect. lawmakers won't even address the issue this week. they aren't in session right now and won't return to washington until next week. this morning, we're learning our area is among the regions that could be hurt the most by the cuts, known as a sequester. that's by a report by wells fargo securities. the government spending makes up about 20% of our local economy. defense spending alone makes up almost 10% of our economy. virginia governor bob mcdonnell is making a personal appeal to president obama to avert the potentially devastating cuts. he wrote a letter to the president asking him to make good on the campaign pledge to avoid the sequestration. supreme court justices return to capitol hill today to hear arguments and release decisions during their spring term. they'll begin with a case pitting a small town farmer

against agriculture giant monsan monsanto. next week the court will hear arguments about the constitutionality of a part of the voting rights act requiring southern states to get approval from the government before they can change voting laws. an alabama county says that requirement is outdated. later this morning, the mother of a murdered child is suing the psychiatrist who evaluated the baby's father. they should have never allowed him unsupervised visits with their child. rams is accused of drowning prince mcloud rams last month. an affidavit said joaquin took out several life insurance on his son and was having financial problems. opening statements set for the trial in a prince george's county man accused of killing a mother and her daughter. jason scott faces several

airport on monday. bowers tried to board a flight with a loaded .40 caliber firearm. the flight was leaving new york headed to raleigh, north carolina, that gun found by tsa agents in bour's carry on luggage. he was a connected round pick in 2011. he played college at clemson. the buccaneers have yet to comment on that arrest. investigators say a leak is to blame for a fire that disabled a cruise ship and left pass verse stranded for close to a week. a fuel leak sprayed on to -- and caught fire on the cruise ship triumph. the fire shut down the ship stranding passengers at sea for five days with no power and no running water. the ntsb is looking into the incident and says it could be six months before they reach a conclusion. >> this morning police are looking into what led an officer-involved shooting that killed a former marine. police were called out yesterday afternoon to a town house in the 3400 block of duke street in alexandria to check out a

domestic violence call. once officers arrived, they found taft sellers with a armed. there was a shooting and sellers died. we talked with his sister. she spoke with her brother sunday. >> when i got from church, i called and asked how he was doing. we normally talk every day. laughing, joking with each other. he said he was fine. i told him i loved him. he said he loved me. that's the last tum i heard from my brother. sellers serviced overseas in the military. he finished his service in 2007. the officers involved in the shooting have been put on routine administrative leave during the investigation. >> today the university of maryland eastern shore will meet with students to talk about the deadly stabbing on campus. police are investigating allegations that campus police took too long to respond. edmond sinclair was killed saturday night there.

his brother isaiah was with him at the time of the stabbing. three men stood if front of the car they were riding in and wouldn't move. edmond walked out and the men stabbed him in the heart. police are offering a $2,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in this case. autopsy results may offer new information about a woman found dead in an apartment fire in reston. police believe someone killed the woman inside the water side apartments in the 12,000 block of waterside view drive early yesterday morning and then set the place on fire. police say the victim had trauma to her upper body. neighbors heard a loud argument around the time of the fire. investigators searched a car at the scene. an alexandria mother is speaking out after her son was arrested for bringing a toy gun to school. we're not identifying the mother to protect the son's identity. it happened at douglas macarthur elementary school. the boy showed off the gun and another parent called police. the charges were eventually

dropped but his mother wants to know why she wasn't told about any of this until after he was arrested. >> you took it upon yourself to investigate my son without my knowledge because you knew monday afternoon. so why you didn't make a phone call monday afternoon. >> the mother is now working to get the charges against his son completely taken off his record. he was suspended for six days and has returned to a different elementary school. 4:48 now. it is up to governor bob mcdonnell to decide whether virginia parents will be able to access their children's facebook accounts after they've died. the virginia senate gave final approval to a bill that allows parents or legal guard wrans to access social media accounts once a minor died. it was prompted by a central virginia couple whose teenage son took his own life two years ago. they hoped to fine answers if his facebook account but they were locked out because of federal privacy laws. a d.c. council member will

introduce emergency legislation to crackdown on the sale of stolen cell phones. tommy wells wants to give the mayor authority to close any business found to be selling stolen phones. the stores would be closed for 72 hours. if approved, this emergency legislation would remain in effect for 90 days. wells, though, is working on a bill to make this a permanent law. a new proposal would allow d.c. police unlimited access to private security cameras in the district. tommy wells plans to introduce a bella loug police to see video feeds like this to see streets and alice. aclu is raising privacy concerns about that proposal. right now police can get access to private security cameras only to investigate a crime. >> this morning, we're helping you avoid hefty fines and stay safe on your way to work. the news 4 i-team looked at which cameras generate the most money.
