the president acknowledged people will lose their jobs if there is no compromise. jennifer johnson joins us from capitol hill. >> reporter: congress is on another budget battle collision course. and millions of american jobs are on the line. surrounded by first responders who could lose their jobs, president obama called on republicans to make a deal. >> are they willing to compromise to protect vital investments and education and health care and national security wore they rather put hundreds of thousands of jobs and our entire economy at risk just to protect a few special interest tax loopholes that been fipt only the wealthiest americans and biggest corporations. >> reporter: if no deal is reached $85 billion in automatic cuts known as the sequester go into effect march 1. democrats want to close tax loopholes on the oil industry and raise taxes on millionaires. republicans want more deficit reduction. >> the president says it will be a balanced approach. so far it has all been tax increases. from the republican point of

view they want to see the spending cuts in terms of the other side of it. >> reporter: if there is month compromise federal workers, everyone from fbi to border patrol agents, could be furloughed or laid off. a wells fargo study says federal and defense industry workers in maryland, virginia, and d.c., will be hardest hit. as the military faces massive cuts. a new bipartisan commission's plan led by former clinton adviser erskine bowles and alan simpson cuts the deficit by $2.4 trillion over ten years. >> they can squawk all then want to. get your country on course and forget the fact that you are a democrat or a republican and get to be an american and get cracking. >> reporter: the sequester was going into effect january 1 but was delayed as part of the fiscal cliff negotiations. more difficult news for this area, the pentagon announced this afternoon lit notify congress tomorrow of its plan to furlough 700,000 civilian employees if no deal is reached.

those furloughs would begin april 22. i'm jennifer johnson, news4. our area's economy depends on thousands of federal workers. how our region could be hard by federal sequestration. >> it is a real threat to this area. ten days to the deadline and everyone wants to see what congress and obama will do. jim deneger of the regional board of trade says it does not look good here for thousands of federal workers and private firms with practical contracts in the washington region. >> now is not the time to panic as it relates to sequestration but it is growing in concern. it seems to be clear that congress is making no move to solve the sequestration issue. >> reporter: maryland public leaders banded together to sound the alarm. >> these are folks that will not be able to pay their mortgage,

pay their rent, or teachers who won't get grants or housing vouchers that will go unfilled. >> people don't understand it they will need to understand that it is jus bad as the fiscal cliff. it needs to be taken care of now. >> reporter: this is about -- >> this is about as executive baker said, moms and dads who will wake newspaper a couple of months and not have a job. >> reporter: an 8 a year old indicatedering company will feel the effects of i sequestration on its business. >> i'm worried i certainly don't to lay anybody off as a result of sequestration. >> reporter: just worked through the hectic obama naugral and a busy season of conferences and meet wings federal agencies and private firms. all of which could be slowed or canceled by sequestration. >> we have seen it in washington but this would be something new to us. i couldn't tell you the impact until it actually happens. >> reporter: ridgewell is the largest area caterer, does not

starting to move in and look at these wind gusts. 30 miles per hour in hagerstown. over 20 in manassas. over towards camp springs. 22-mile-an-hour wind gusts towards paw tux enriver. wind chills down to the teens early in the morning. we will talk about how cold things will get over the next couple of days and talk about our next storm which isn't that far away. murdered for his shoes. we heard it before. now we are hearing again that was the motive behind the murder of a 15-year-old high school student. the prince george's county police department just wrapped up a news conference on the death of charles walker jr. who was shot and killed in broad daylight yesterday. bureau chief tracee wilkins is outside of police headquarters in palmer park. >> reporter: chief mcgaughw wrad up the press conference what is being said on social media what happened with walker is not true. he is saying that the motive behind this murder is robbery.

>> we just want justice done. see who did this to him. >> reporter: this family friend, who who has known charles walker, since he was a child, remembers their last conversation. >> called me and asked me if he could have a couple of dollars to get a gift for his girl friend. yeah, i will give it to you. >> reporter: prince george's county police say walker was carrying that gift for his girlfriend yesterday. a pair of timber land boots. they say his killers shot and robbed him for the bag he was carrying. and then chose to leave hinted. >> i am really enraged that a young person in our community can't walk the streets with a shopping bag without being shot in the back. that's something that ought to be of concern to our entire community. >> reporter: students at suitland high school are struggling to make sense of the is a-year-old freshman's death. he was shot and killed in hillcrest heights. just blocks from his home. he's the fifth prince george's county high school student to be murdered this school year. >> like you never know when your last day could be. you could be killed for nothing.

like interest wouldn't be your fault. it is because someone has a gun, that bullet could be aimed for you. >> reporter: chief mcgaw says he is hoping to close the case in the next week or so. >> we deserve justice and accounting. >> reporter: the state's attorney also says walker's murder is an example of a growing social ill that must be cured. >> this is not some wild crime. this is a social issue. this is a social problem that really stems from what is happening with our young people and if we don't address that problem, we continue to react over and over again. we can arrest and prosecute and send to jail and still doesn't solve it unless we deal with our young people. >> reporter: chief mcgaw and state's attorney brooks will be working together to introduce some community initiatives. working with faith based -- working with the faith based community. they announced that and wanted to make the point it is very for to them to pull the community in to try to deal with, again,

social ills plaguing the young people in prince george's county. some of the young people of prince george's county. they are still asking for help in solving this murder and want more tips and more information to come into them. they are asking you to call. roaring live in palmer park, i'm tracee wilkins, news4. three deputies in maryland are on leave tonight. frederick county share sieve reaching out to the community after a man with down syndrome died in custody. 26-year-old ethan sailor had a medical emergency when deputies tried to remove him from a movie theater last month. he died later at the hospital. last friday the state medical examiner ruled his death a homicide by asphyxia. frederick county sheriff said via facebook an investigation is under way. new evidence in the murder of chandra levy could lead to a new trial for the man who is serving 60 years for her murder. court documents released today reveal that a key witness for the prosecution may have lied.

>> these are just a few of the hundreds of pages ofuments released too much most of the position is blacked out. but will is enough here to know prosecutors have a big problem with one of their witnesses. just who that witness is and what the problem is remains a secret. two years after guandique was sentenced to 60 years in prison and the levy family thought they had been given some closure, guandique's attorneys and prosecutors were back in court arguing the case. at issue, a disclosure by prosecutors that they have new evidence that could impeach one of their own witnesses. guandique's attorneys told the judge this new information drastically undercuts the prosecution's case. prosecutors told the judge about the new evidence late last year. but according to the court records, they knew about the problem for nearly a year before coming forward. lawyers for guandique and several news organizations asked the judge to release the transcripts. prosecutors argued to keep the information a secret from the public due to safety concern

force the witness and because, they said, releasing the information would also trigger intense press coverage and speculation. the judge agreed to release the transcripts but much of it was redakotaed due to safety concerns for the witness in question. there was no physical evidence linking guandique to the murder. the strongest witnesses during the trial were the women guandique admitteded to attacking in rock creek park and in a jailhouse informant known as the mouse who testified guandique confessed to him in prison. es in open court last week, prosecutors told the judge they disagreed with guandique's lawyer's assertion their case was based on a lie but gave no specific. those details could be made public in april when guandique is scheduled to be back in court. his lawyers say that they will ask for a new trial. guandique remains behind bars. 60 people have to find a new place to live tonight after an apartment building fire in prince william county. this is cell phone video sent to us by a viewer. fire started about 11:00 last night on lady jane loop in

police in california called it an execution on a freeway. there was a deadly shooting spree at six different locations in orange county, california, today. many of those shot were in their cars. it started around 5:00 a.m. when a woman was found shot to death at a home. at least five more people were shot within the next half hour. two of them died. police believe the gunman, 20-year-old ali saed, fired as police tried to get away. the athlete was back in court for a hearing in the murder of his girlfriend reeva steam camp. he broke do steenkamp. the authorities believe he w sce steenkamp was laid to rest in her hometown. we are learning more about

the circumstances of the ooting rampage at sandy hook elementary school. 20 little children and six adults were killed at the connecticut school that day. nbc's jay gray tells us about the shooter's obsession with another shooting spree. >> reporter: as investigators continue to piece together evidence in the massacre of sandy hook elementary, there are reports today that the killing spree could have ties to a deadly attack in norway. >> if you find articles about the worst mass murder in history in the guy's game room, you are bogey to start to wonder. >> reporter: citing law enforcement sources, it is being reported investigators uncovered newspaper accounts in adam lanza's bedroom detailing the 2011 attack by anders breivik in norway. sources tell the paper interest in breivik is one of several theories investigators shared with federal authorities during a recent briefing on the case. lanza had an extensive

this time of year. get ready for the cold and get ready for the wind. that's what we are bogey to see over the next 24 to 48 hours. the windchill is going to be what we are talking about a lot lately. 46, current number. winds at mine miles per hour. wind gust at the airport no too strong. some areas picking up 20 to 25-mile-an-hour wind gusts. it is not going to start until later mitt. 43 degrees in leesburg. 41 in gaithersburg. not too cold just yet. as we move through the rest of the night tonight, that's where we are going to start to see the colder air move in. we had one last area of showers. it was good line of showers making its way through the region. now it is just about gone. one more in lieu portions of anne arundel county. along the patuxent river. the storm system continues to move off towards the east. behind it you he the colder air because of the snow. the colder air is moving in now. as a matter of fact, look at these mums. we are at 46 in washington. 42 in hagerstown.

not bad. pittsburgh, 27. columbus, 27. that's the cold air that's moving in overnight tonight. that's where we will be early tomorrow morning. many of you will be in the mid to upper 20s as that cold ask very windy conditions continue to move on in. this is the day on wednesday. watch what happens thursday. not much. cold and windy again. it is going to be the same type of day that we are going to see tomorrow, we will see it again on thursday. would days in a row if you are cold and windy, windy conditions. mostly clear. windy and cold. wind chills in the teens tomorrow morning. 23 to 28 degrees. tomorrow afternoon, mixture of sun and clouds. sun will not help much. windy and colder. wind chills in the 20s all day. i think between 20 and 25 for the most part with actual temperatures between 35 and 39 degrees. friday, that's another day to watch. temperatures around 38 degrees with a mixture of rain and snow. 45 on saturday with a 40% chance of showers. maybe drizzle and saturday looking a little bit gloomy.

we clear out sunday. sunday, better day. it does look like temperatures will be rising as we head into monday and tuesday. back into the low 50s. tuesday another day we watch for another potential storm. as far as friday is concerned, this day, not too big of a threat. it is going to be cold to start. precipitation that moves in, may start off with snow, more freezing rain. it should be fairly light. it does not take a lot of freezing rain to create problems. this is something that we are going to watch very closely during the day friday. once again. not too concerned about it. we will continue to watch it. saturday for the weekend, that's the day i'm a little more concerned about because we all have that day off. at least most of us. we are talking about a rather dreary, drizzly, showery day during the day saturday. once again, i think the biggest thing you need to know is what will happen tomorrow and author. we talked about sunday and how cold sunday was. i think tomorrow and thursday will be very much like what we saw the past sunday. >> what's the deal with that the groundhog was predicting a short erwinter so -- >> what have i told you about the groundhog, doreen?

what have i told you? >> i'm just looking for hope. all this cold, dreary weather. thanks, doug. a woman is in the hospital tonight. she drove her car into a home in glenn dale, maryland. investigators not sure why she did it. the car sailed across the lawn and into the house this afternoon and ended up in the den. no one was home at the time. the driver is in fair condition. another vehicle slammed into a home today in prince william county. police say that teens on a joy ride in a stolen truck drove right smack into the house. the family tells news4's jackie bensen it is a miracle hair daughter wasn't killed in the accident. >> it was deafening. >> reporter: looking at the scene from above, it is hard to imagine how the stolen chevy pickup truck managed to travel the distance from cardinal drive over the curb, up on the lawn. just missing a tree and into the living room of the home on choate court. it plowed right through the spot where the family's 5-year-old daughter stands watching for the school bus every morning.

>> when i came -- i just saw her screaming, i was so happy. i just took her and rushed out. >> reporter: four teens, age 15s to 17, three of them girls, were inside of the truck. they attempted to run from the scene. but police officers who had been following them since the vehicle hit a car nearby arrived moments later and apprehended them. turns out prince william county police had been searching for them since they walked away from a supervised juvenile center on monday. >> it is a less secure home for juveniles who committed offenses and placed there. they are low-risk, low-security facility. >> reporter: the juvenile is shelter is located in manassas. a couple of miles from the townhouse development where police say the pickup truck was stolen. the house has been boarded up and secured. the red cross is helping them find temporary shelter and basic necessities, including shoes for freida. in her rush to help her dater there had been no time to put

neighbors are being credited with helping a man escape a fire in bowie, maryland, this morning. it happened just before 5:00 in the morning. neighbors bang order the man's door so he could get out. he was not hurt. an emotional start for the trial after accused of killing a mother and daughter in prince george's county. police found their bodies in a burning car back in 2009. today prosecutors waste nod time showing the jury some graphic evidence. news4's chris gordon is in upper marlboro with more. >> reporter: good evening. mitt for the very first time in this murder trial we will show you some of the evidence that was seen by the jury in the jason scott case. this came about because reporters covering the trial at the courthouse made a request of the judge who ruled that the exhibits that are admitted as evidence can be released to the media once court is adjourned at the end of the day.

in opening statements, the defense lawyer said jason scott enter ad plea of not guilty when first charged with murder and he stands by it. he said investigators did not find scott's dna, fingerprints, or hair at the crime scene. he asked the jury to keep an open mind. but the prosecution says evidence from a series of home invasions point to neon arrow at jason scott it is a murderer of delores dewitt and her daughter ebony. prosecutors called prince george's county police corporal desmond dawson to testify first. he responded to a 911 call from a homeowner reporting a stolen car on march 16, 2009. two weeks after her home was broken into and her extra set of car keys stolen. >> that's my car. it drove past me. >> which way did the vehicle go?
