>> reporter: investigators this morning are renewing their calls for the public asking anyone with information into yesterday's explosion to come forward to provide pictures, witness descriptions, anything that might help lead to the tour whomever kiried out those explosions yesterday. and again, 12 cities around boston are closed and active crime scene and as investigators tried to peace together exactly what happened here. >> nearly a day after two explosions rocked the finish line in the boston marathon, massachusetts governor deval patrick warned bostonians life will be different and at least until an arrest is made. >> everyone should expect continued heightened police presence and everyone should continuepers continue personally to be vigilant. >> reporter: two explosions near the finish line about 12 seconds and 100 yards apart shattered windows that sent runners,

spectators running for safety. dozens of the wounded were rushed to several boston hospitals. among the dead an 8-year-old by. doctors say they are treating wounds from a blast impact and flying debris. they went from treating dehydration and blisters to things you see on a battlefield. >> probably the most common serious injuries are combined lower extremity injuries, combined meaning bone injuries and soft tissue injuries and vascular injuries. >> reporter: the fbi is leading the investigation and evidence collects teams have been brought in from new york. at the white house president obama vowed it will be a swift and thorough search for whomever planted the device. >> anyresponsible groups will feel the full weight of justice. >> reporter: police questioned man who was injured and being treated in a boston hospital. the investigators say he's not considered a suspect nora person of interest. and so far police are still not

commenting on the specific aspects of their investigation. however, we do know they spent seven hours in revere, massachusetts. not too far from where we stand right now. and going through an apartment building. they were seen bringing out evidence bags to their cars p however, no arrests were made. th charisma loan. now back to you. we are learning more this morning about the little boy who may be the youngest victim to lose his life in yesterday's attack. this is 8 year old martin richard. our sister station in boston is reporting that martin was watching his father finish the race when he was killed in that blast. his father is suffering a severe brain injury and his 6-year-old sister lost her leg. earlier this morning a single candle could be seen lit on the stoop of the family's home with the word peace written on the sidewalk. many people in boston are still trying to come to grips with what happened at the finish line. news4's tony tull traveled to

boston as soon as we heard about the explosions. he talked to several people about what they say and did in the aftermath of the bombings including one woman that had just moved to boston from washington, d.c. tony? >> reporter: good morning. earlier this morning we were doing our live shot it was eerily quiet in boston. the city hadn't come awake yet and not very many cars on the road there. a lot of police presence as well as the national guard. they they sent over a national guards in here to help out. in the last couple of hours, the city has come alive. we had a lot of people coming down the streets and as you can imagine been taking pictures and video and just walking by the scene and it is sinking in to them what exactly had happened yesterday. but i want to give you a sense of what is going on right now at the scene. i want to show you as we push in, we are literally about three blocks away from the finish line. you can see the fire truck lader there that's erected. what they are doing is taking aerial photographs of? of the crime scenes. they will be putting those together and aiding their investigation.

pull it out a little bit. i want to show you how some of the things that happened yesterday are still in place. you see there on the ground, a paper towels, napkins. they were using those to bandage folks up and as they were making their way way from the blast site. if we take a look to the left we can see some of those chairs stacked by the restaurant. about an hour ago, that restaurant was completely filled outdoors with food and drinks still on the table and still -- all the places were set from yesterday. hit not been touched. it was eerie inform come back to place that was sort of a ghost town but you could still see the recommend mantz of what happened. the story today was about how everybody was helping each other and coming together. >> seemed like a natural response for people, to offer what they pleaded after the marathon. >> reporter: less than 24 hours since two bombs near the finish line of the marathon ripped away any sense of security for folks in boston. such a tragic event has brought a city and a nation together.

meredith moved to boston for work. she had added her name to a growing list of folks that need place to stay. >> very aware the effects of terrorism. >> reporter: sarah lives blocks away from where the blast went off yesterday. this morning, shake general and clearly scared she heads off to work. as we spoke about what happened just right down the street, she summed up what every person we have talked to has said. >> i just feel a sense of like pride for the whole town coming together and helping each other out and people taking people in that they don't know to help them out. and, i mean, you can only try to be positive about it. >> reporter: but for sarah's friend, the feelings are different. still rattled with fear, she told me she couldn't bring herself to walk down the street to get home last night. >> two blocks away. felt weird to go the streets. looking out and no one was walking around. pretty scary. >> reporter: laura traveled from

new mexico to run in a marathon. she finished moments before the bombs went off. like caroline, she describes how such a busy crowded place seemed to turn to such a ghost town. >> normally people out there for hours the rest of the day celebrating being happy but shortly after that, we just kept hearing sirens and the streets were dead. >> reporter: and, barbara, there is a better picture now that a photographer that crime scene photographer up there in that pyre truck ladder taking some pictures just to aid in this investigation. as you can imagine the atf, fbi p. multitude of resources are out here and coming through all hours of the morning into this late morning but we are going to continue to stay on the story. you can imagine hour by hour situation. we will continue to follow all the news coming out of boston here. we will keep you updated. again, people steadily walking through the streets. a lot of people heading to work and stopping by and taking pictures. they just -- they are talking to each other and comforting each other. and just letting each other know they are going to get through this together here in boston.

what we can see is the increased police presence. in light of what happened in boston, police are out in full force and they beefed up security. they got out here very early in the morning to set up their perimeter. before dawn, police's tow trucks began pulling cars off restricted streets. officers used their cruisers to keep traffic away from the parade route. security in place and work crews began setting up the bleachers for the emancipation day parade. >> it is good we are here today. a parade to show despite what happened up there, we are down here to enjoy ourselves on this day. >> reporter: there's no specific threat against washington but in light of the tragedy in boston,

today many people in our area are remembering another tragedy. this is the sixth anniversary of the shootings in virginia tech. 32 people were killed six years g ago today. it marks the 18th anniversary of the oklahoma city bombing and the shooting at columbine high school. angie goss is at the live december week airport problems in new york. >> yes. we are hearing unconfirmed reports that the marketplace of central terminal at la guardia airport is being evacuated due to a suspicious package. larry woodward tweeted a couple of pictures standing under wrought side of la guardia. another passenger tweeting saying they got evacuate prosecuted the central terminal. authorities didn't tell them anything. just that everyone needed to get out so everybody is just out there waiting outside. you can see huge lines.

in the heart of boston is a crime scene. the area mere the finish line of the boston marathon is closed while federal agents and police look for clues that can help them who was responsible for

yesterday's bombings. more than 100 are still in the hospital. the death toll hasn't climbed above three. it remains at that number, as we speak. cities around the world are adding extra security polling the boston bombings. organizers of the london marathon are reviewing security measures for sunday's race. they are working with police to secure the race route. japan is adding extra police officers in public places where large crowds gathered. new york city and l.a. beefing up security as well. president obama says whoever is responsible for the bombing attack in boston will peel the full weight of justice. and new this morning, the u.s. marines are trying to figure out what caused one of their helicopters to crash near the north korean border. the chopper was taking part in a joint drill with south korean forces. 21 people were onboard including 16 marines and six people are still in the hospital this morning and in stable condition. no one was killed. the crew is from the 31st marine unit stationed in okinawa,

japan. new threats this morning from north korea after the country quietly celebrated their founder's birth. the nation is vowing retaliation after anti-north korean controversies were held in the south yesterday. the april 15 holiday in the north came and went without the missile test threatened by kim jong-un in weeks. is . >> north korea will probably make more provocative moves over the next several weeks but our hope is that we can contain it and that we can move into a different phase in which they try to work through diplomatically through the issues they can get back on a pa pa path. >> the president does not believe north korea has the capability of put a nuclear warhead on a missile. new today, dozens confirmed dead across iran and pakistan after major earthquake. the u.s. geological survey says

the quake measured 7.8ing in magnitude. it hit southeastern iran near the border of pakistan. iran is reporting at least 40 dead, at least 6 in pakistan with hundreds of others injured. the quake shook buildings as par away as new delhi, india and dubai as well. and several small earthquakes shook the ground in parts of oklahoma in this country this morning. u.s. geological survey says four small quakes that hit starting around 1:45 this morning. they are all centered northeast of oklahoma city and they range in magnitude between 2.8 and 4.3. strongest was centered near the town of luther. so there there are month reports of injuries or damage. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein joins us now. a lot going on both sides of the globe. >> here we have had a lot of cloudiness around this morning.

been having our temperatures gradually climb. we are getting some breaks in the cloud cover and everything is greening up dramatically. there is a live view from the news4 sky watcher camera. overlooking northwest washington, national cathedral in the distance. you can see how green those trees are. and there is a gray sky over the trees. there are a few bright spots in that gray sky. little bit of sun. trying to break out now as we are just past 11:00 in the morning. 62 at reagan national. we have a light sotszerly breeze. winds have shift flood the south. they were east and southeast earlier this morning. brought in those clouds. now with that southerly wind, i think that will is a good chance for us to see the cloud cover breaking up for much of the region. it is climbing into the low and mid 60s around much of the area. that includes prince george's county and montgomery, arlington, fairfax, district, low and mid six now. upper 60s now, parts of soar of southern maryland where they are getting shine breaking out. mid and upper 60s across parts of north central virginia from

prince william county south into fauquier, stafford and spotsylvania into the mid and upper 60s to near 70 there. elsewhere shenandoah valley and northern part of the valley are sunshine breaking out there. into the mid siblts along skyline drive, some sunshine but it is at the lower elevations where we have this cloud deck that's hanging in. temperatures on the eastern shore where it has been mice and sunny and there around 70 degrees. and here's the view from space over the morning hours. we have the cloud cover in but you can see the darker spots, that's where the sunshine is breaking out here and we are getting a little bit of a peek of sunshine even right here around the metro area. highs this afternoon as that sun does break out. should quickly cause the temperatures to jump into the low and mid 70s much of the region. around the metro area, probably hit the low 70s by perhaps mid afternoon. and then the temperatures after that will gradually drop back quite a bit of cloudiness again tonight in by midnight back down into the lower 60s. and by dawn tomorrow. there is the possibility of a few scattered sprinkles.

few scattered sprinkles later this afternoon into the mountains and perhaps to our north and west. there is a slight chance of that. those areas in green showing potential areas of some precipitation and rain. then as we get into the evening hours, does look like late tonight and pre-dawn wednesday we may have a few sprinkles. wednesday, midday and during the afternoon, might get a few scattered showers. mainly south of the metro area. and then on thursday, might pick up also a few scattered showers. most of the area is going to be staying dry which is going to keep the pollen high. we are going stay in the high range here all the way into thursday and probably part of friday. then it is friday afternoon and evening where we could get thunderstorms. and that will wash? of the pollen out of the air. between now and then we will have highs in the 70s and morning lows 50s. over the weekend, saturday and sunday, cooler weather moves in. maybe a lingering shower through midday saturday. sun back in the afternoon and sunny sunday. >> thanks, tom. still ahead, warning for anyone considering giving funds

this morning, we learned a 78-year-old knocked down by one of the blasts at the boston marathon made it across the finish line. he fraes washington state. he said he felt the ground shake and caused to it make his feet come out underneath him. he was ten feet from the finish line. two officers helped him up and helped him cross the finish line to receive his medal. if you are looking ways to help the people of boston keep an eye out for scams. less than an hour after the explosion, a suspicious twitter account went viral claiming to

donate to the boston marathon victims for every wheat that would was received. after fielding numerous complaints this account was shut down. there could be others out there as well. the red cross isn't currently accepting donations but economy the city of boston have set up websites with resources. if you see anything suspicious let us know on our facebook page. we have some breaking news. firefighters rescued one person from a burning home in arlington. the pyre broke out around 10:30 this morning. the 2300 block of north dinwiddie street in arlington. the home was fully engulfed when they arrived. they pulled one person from the basement. two people were taken to the hospital with burn injuries. no word on their condition. we have a crew on the way and will bring you the latest information as soon as we get it. it is 11:27 thousand. coming up in the next half hour, "news4 midday," under watchful eyes, d.c.'s emancipation parade is under way at this hour.

>> this was a heinous and cowardly act. given what we now know took place, fbi is investigating as an act of trarm. what we don't yet know, however, is who carried out the 2 attack or why. we don't know fit was foreign or domestic or was it an an of one individual. clearly we are at the beginning of our investigation. it will take time to poll every lead and determine what

happened. but we will find out. we will find whoever harmed our citizens and we will bring them to justice. we also know this. the american people refuse to be terrorized. because what the -- world saw yesterday and aftermath of the explosions were stories of heroism and kindness and generosity and love. exhausted runners who kept running to the nearest hospital to give blood and those who stayed to tend to the wounded and some tearing off their own clothes to make tourniquets. first responders to that ran into chaos to save lives and the men and women who are still treating the wounded at some of the best hospitals in the world. and the medical students who hurried to help saying when we heard we all came in. the priests who opened their churches and ministers to the hurt and fearful and good people of boston who opened their homes to the victims of this attack and those shaken by it.

p you want know who we are, what america is, and how we respond to evil, that's it. selflessly, compassionately, unafraid. and in the coming days we will pursue every effort to get to the bottom of what happened and we will continue to remain vigilant. i directed my administration to take appropriate security measures to protect the american people and this is a good time for all of us to remember that we all have a part to play in alerting authorities if you see something suspicious. speak up. i have extraordinary confidence of the men and women in the fbi and the boston police department and other agencies that responded so heroically and effectively in the aftermath of yesterday's events. very grateful for the leadership of governor patrick and mayor menino. i know even as we protect our people and aggressively pursue this investigation, the people of boston will continue to

respond to ain the same proud ad heroic way. fellow americans will be right there with them. thank you very much. you can expect further briefings from our law enforcement officials and as the -- the day goes on. and when we have more details, they will be disclosed. what i have indicated to you is what we know now. we know the bombs that were set off and we know that, obviously, they did some severe damage. and we do not know who did them. and we do not know whether this is an act of an organization or an individual or individuals. we don't have a sense of motive yet. so everything else at this point is speculation but as we receive more information, as the fbi has more information, our counter terrorism teams have more information, we will make sure to keep you and the american people posted. all right. thank you very much, everybody.

mcgrath who is live near freedom plaza. megan. >> reporter: just a short time ago we had one of the bands walk by. you can see down the road a little bit there i believes the mayor gray that we are seeing there off in the distance making his way down here to all of the people who have assembled. as you can see on the sidewalks we got folks who have come out of their offices and here to take in the parade. we also have a number of people behind us here. you can see the stands, grandstand, they have set up here and got a lot of folks who came out for the parade including rosa lee. why did you feel it was for to be here. >> you were saying you think this is an for day. >> for day. for day for us. we haven't gotten that far down the road. we got a long ways to go. >> reporter: all right. thanks for joining us and enjoy. should mention that there is quite a security presence here with the police. and they have been here since

very early this morning. we got here at 4:00 in the morning. they were already here and already shut down roads in the area. creating a perimeter. we have seen the dogs, k-9s out here sniffing around the perimeter and making sure everything is safe and in light of what happened in boston. i should say there is no specific threat to this event here or to washington, d.c., in general. but out of an abundance of caution, they have beefed up security here in the nation's capital. also on the metro. you can see some of the security measures that have been taken here surround thing particular event. little while ago i did speak to one of the folks who was here taking in the parade and asked him how he felt about all of the extra security around. did it bother him or make him nervous or make him feel more comfortable? >> i think we have estimated eight or ten categories of law enforcement out here. safe. everywhere. i'm almost -- this is the

world's capital really. if there is anywhere you should feel safe it is here. >> reporter: the mayor and other dignitaries as well as our own tom sherwood there stopping in the middle of the street. just like tom there. but -- so the parade continuing on here down pennsylvania avenue to the crowd assembled. policing down everything under control. we have seen absolutely no problems whatsoever. and the pokes who were here say that they feel good about the extra security that is here. it does not bother them a bit. i have to tell you, there's a concession area over there. if we only had odor-rama. the most wonderful smells wafting over here. after the parade over, folks are going to gather over there in freedom plaza and eat some of those wonderful things we are smelling here. >> thank you, megan. we are following a developing story on capitol hill.

we learned the plans to unveil an immigration reform bill are on hold because of yesterday's tragedy in boston. a group of senators were supposed to roll out that proposal today but many of its members say that the rollout can wait out of respect to the victims in boston. the senators tell us the measure will create way for millions of undocumented immigrants to become citizens and he will boost security at that time borders and create work visas for thousands of foreign workers. and right now the white house is calling senators to build support for gun control measure. several republicans now say they won't vote for the bill which would expand background checks. its supporters need some of the republican onboard if the bill has any chance of passing. the democrats and republicans who crafted it say that they may be willing to accept changes to their plans if it helps it to pass. >> former congresswoman gabby giffords is back on capitol hill today. she is here in washington for the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. the plaque honors gabe zimmerman, one of her former aides, who is one of six people

reagan national. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey tells us tighter security will be in place through the end at -- at least through the end of the day. a moment of silence this morning on wall street for the boston marathon bombing victims. let's check in with cnbc's bertha coombs. bertha, good morning. >> good morning. it is one of those things we see all too often. had just stopped to honor the bombing victims. a lot of folks yesterday watching that unfold. and continuing to monitor the developments. markets are rebounding this morning. the dow is back up triple digits after yesterday's massive sell-off. investors encouraged by u.s. economic data this morning. the labor department reporting inflation remains tame. consumer prices fell slightly last month with gasoline prices coming down nearly 4.5%. oil prices are at an all-time low and the futures markets are mine months rather.

housing construction rose to the highest level in five years last month. up 7% according to the commerce department. driven mostly by apartment building construction. upbeat earnings report also boosting stocks. coca-cola's shares leading the dow higher today. first quarter profits topped that expectations. soda sales were flat in the u.s. sales of water and other beverages were higher. sparking the better profits and gold prices are bouncing back after yesterday's massive $100 free fall in the futures market. the biggest one-day decline in about 30 years. one gold fund, spider gold trust, a way a lot of individuals investors play gold, more than $1 billion in outflows over the past few days as investors wanted out. silver lining in the gold price decline, we could see gold jewelry become a little more affordable. if you are looking to buy something for mother's day, i may get a better price. back to you. >> that would be a golden touch. bertha, thank you so much. new today, treasury

secretary jack lew was on capitol hill testify being the 2014 budget proposal. >> we removed much of the wreckage from the worst economic crisis since the great depression. the damage left in its wake is not fully repaired. families across the country are still struggling and unemployment remains high. economic growth needs to be faster and while we made progress we must do more to put the fiscal house in order. at the same time, political gridlock in war wash continues to generate a separate headwind. including harsh indiscriminate spending cuts from the sequester and that will be a drag on our economy and in the month ahead if they are not replaced with sensible deficit reduction policies like the ones we are proposing. >> the proposal includes $1.8 trillion in deficit reduction over the next ten years. tax increases for the wealthy and raising the minimum wage to $9 an hour. lew will testify before the senate budget committee at 3:00 this afternoon. maryland governor martin o'malley's trip to the super bowl was an expensive one.

according to "the baltimore sun" maryland's state police spent more than $5600 on o'malley's trip to north koreans to cheering on the ravens. money was spent on airfare, meals, vehicles, hotel rooms, and overtime. o'malyes has a taxpayer funded sky box at the stadium giving him access to eight super bowl tickets. he and his wife paid for their tickets using personal funds. the others will sold at face value to top aides and the city delegates. our time is 11:49. coming up, a musical tribute to tilds. >> storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein will be back with another check of warmer forecast.
