how one local mother's battle with alcohol inspired an area filmmaker to try to stop a dangerous trend among women. first tonight. people are calling it a milestone for women. the fda has lowered the age limit for plan b. >> so now girls 15 and older can get this emergency contraceptive without a prescription. and the product will no longer be kept behind the pharmacy counter. jim rosenfield in tinley town with reaction. >> and wendy and jim, this issue surrounding age limits on access to the so-called morning after pill has been in the courts for years. tonight, in lowering those limits, the fda has changed course. citing new studies that show 15-year-olds are able to take the drug responsibly. >> at glen echo pharmacy in bethesda, you'll still find plan b behind the pharmacists counter because until this latest fda decision, anyone under 17 needed a prescription.

>> but now girls as young as 15 will be able to buy the single dose pill over the counter as a way to prevent pregnancy if they take it within three days after sex. the change in regulation we found getting mixed reaction tonight. >> i think it's very smart. and i -- i mean, let's face it. 15-year-olds are having sex. >> i really don't think it's a good idea because i think that in today's society, i feel that the's so much just free will. >> reporter: the fda will require the drugmaker to add labelling to the box, making it clear no one under 15 will be allowed to buy the drug. and proof of age will be required. without it, no sale. pharmacists and proponents alike admit there are practical issues to be worked out. >> most 15-year-olds don't have an i.d. with their birth date on it. >> reporter: organizations like planned parenthood have been pushing for remove alf all age barriers for access to the drug. a recent court ruling on just that remains in limbo.

but tonight, washington planned parenthood's president and ceo calls this a step in the right direction. >> this is a step forward in opening up access to a very safe and effective medication. >> reporter: the fda tonight says it made this change independent of the recent court ruling ordering the agency to remove all age barriers. the justice department tonight still deciding whether it will appeal that ruling. in tinley town, jim rosenfield, news 4. chilling new evidence in the murder offa an 18-year-old mother from the district of columbia. today, a jury convicted 19-year-old johnny sweet of kidnapping and killing la tischia fraser. prosecutors say sweet invited frazier to his apartment in southeast in 2010. then he and six other people beat her up, tied her up, left her in a closet all because they thought she had stolen money from sweet. in a newly released interrogation tape, sweet said he did realize frazier had died until after the assault. >> what you mean she won't

breathing? he was like, i think she did. she's in the closet. >> frazier's body was dumped in a landfill in richmond. it still has not been found. sweet is the second person to be convicted in this case. five others plead guilty. the jury in d.c. will reconvene tomorrow to consider heart-wrenching testimony from a wife who believes her husband may never recover from a beating he suffered on capitol hill. abby is the woman's name. she testified today at her husband's -- she calls him t.c. he's been through six surgeries, a long rehabilitation and still has trouble walking and talking. tommy branch is accused of beating him with a baseball bat during a robbery near eastern market last summer. the jury got the case only this afternoon. bunch of men put on some masks and then ran into the cartier store in chevy chase,

maryland, today and got away with some really expensive merchandise. >> yeah, it's the latest in a string of smash and grabs. and tonight, police want to know if they are all linked. shamari stone has our report. >> reporter: well, that's right. police are investigating to see if they are linked, seeing if there is a connection with these string of robberies. now police tell us they will decide tomorrow morning if they are going to step up patrols in this area of chevy chase where you have these high-end stores behind me. what's not in question is these high end jewelry robberies in our region are getting bolder and people i talked to throughout this area tell me that something needs to be done. it's all too familiar. a quick, brazen robbery at the cartier store in chevy chase. the m.o., the same as recent incidents across our area like this one in pentagon city. masked men rush in, smash glass counters, grab what they can in watches and dash out in less than a minute. today's robbery with an off-duty police officer parked right

outside. he started a car chase that led into the district. >> they are entering the circle. they're going the wrong way in the circle towards d.c. permission to continue pursuit. passing ingomar street. passing huntington street. proximate speed 55. >> reporter: about 40 minutes later in d.c., police found the suspect's car. the chase continued, but that officer crashed and the suspects got away. so you work in the area at one of these high end stores. what's your reaction knowing this is happening? >> it's scary being so close -- so close to here and what you think is a -- i guess not necessarily tight-knit but a safe community and being so close to the office. it's definitely a scary thing. >> reporter: back in february, three masked men walked into the colonial jewelers in frederick, maryland, smashing a display case, grabbing $125,000 worth of rings and then a month later, a lightning fast heist also in pentagon city. in less than 30 seconds, thieves

stole $600,000 in rolex watches. now police made one arrest in the frederick robbery but they've made no arrests in the other ones. now in this latest robbery, this one with the cartier behind me, the detectives will review the surveillance video and then decide whether to put it out and when is the appropriate time? meanwhile, they are looking for the suspects. live in chevy chase, i'm shomari stone, news 4. a security guard helped stop a robbery in suitland, maryland, today. police say three guys tried to hold up a pawn shop on silver hill road. they got into a gun fight with the guard. the guard shot one of the robbers before they all ran out of the store and took off in a car. the vehicle crashed on savannah street in southeast washington. police caught up with the suspects and arrested them. we're told that security guard suffered only minor injuries. there is new hope tonight for some of the victims in that boston terror attack. a group called the coalition to walk and run again plans to

provide prosthetic limbs for amputees who don't have enough insurance to cover the high cost. as for the investigation, we may soon learn what killed suspect tamerlan tsarnaev who was shot in that police confrontation just days after the bombing. and then run over by his brother dzhokhar reportedly. the medical examiner will release the cause of his death after his remains are given to his family. and a new federal investigation also got under way today to see just how well u.s. intelligence officials handled the information that they had on the tsarnaevs before the attack. virginia governor bob mcdonnell is defending his relationship with the ceo of a private business. johnny williams is the head of a company called star scientific. he has contributed thousands of dollars to the mcdonnell campaign. williams also paid $15,000 to cater a wedding party for the governor's daughter. the fbi is now reportedly looking into the relationship

between the pair. today, mcdonnell said on wtop radio that he did not give williams any special treatment. and under virginia law, he says he does not have to disclose the wedding gift to his daughter. >> gifts to the office holders are required to be disclosed. but no office holder right now is required to disclose gifts to a spouse, to children in the house, to adult children. >> governor mcdonnell said he does believe virginia's campaign finance laws should be tightened. from capitol hill to a martial arts studio in mississippi. that's where ricin showed up in tests as the fbi tracks letters sent to congress and the white house. federal prosecutors reveal today the positive test at the studio owned by james dusky. court documents also claim fbi agents spotted him dumping items in the trash. and that included a mask that tested positive for ricin. dusky is now being held without bond. he has denied any part in the

ricin letters. looking at our weather now. still a few lingering showers throughout. sprinkles here and there. we're getting suck of this, doug kammerer. >> i think we're about to see some big changes as we head into the day tomorrow. high pressure to the north n east. will finally move back in across our area. for most of us, that means sunshine. mostly cloudy skies. temperatures of 58 degrees. that wind still out of the northeast. and that wind is the reason we've seen the showers and why we've seen the drizzle and still have some of that out there. storm team 4 radar showing most hifs to the southwest of the radar site around dulles, down around warrenton, prince william county, other areas of drizzle, too, continue to be around the region. we'll see more of this tonight. some areas of fog. but by tomorrow morning we'll notice a nice big change. and as i mentioned, the word nice, we need to mention that a bit bigger. caps fans, you can get home on metro if the playoff games

the company in charge of the cruise ship that stalled at sea, lost power,ad overflowing bathrooms, that company want the court to throw out all the passenger lawsuits. we learned today carnival corporation argued in court its ticket clearly states passengers cannot file class action suits. lawyers for the passengers say the company let the doomed ship set sail even with a history of mechanical problems. going out to dinner might get more expensive in fairfax county. the board of supervisors there is considering a tax on restaurant meals. the public will get its first chance to weigh in on the issue on tuesday, may 7th. the idea of a meal tax has been suggested in the past. but it would still need to be approved by voters as part of the november ballot. it is a problem getting more and more attention. alcoholism among women. and one local mother's death

inspired an area filmmaker to expose what she calls a secret in the suburbs. erika gonzalez shows us the newly released documentary that is made to save lives. >> reporter: a snowstorm december 2009. 39-year-old julie, drunk and drive with her daughter in the back seat. a minor collision with a tree sends her 8-year-old running for help. kroel gets out, too but instead falls into a ravine. >> she's walking and falling. walking and falling. she had on black pants, a white shirt and a vest. >> reporter: all the while a local director is watching crol's story play out. including the day her body is discovered under packs of snow. nearly two weeks after she had first disappeared. >> butterfield demands a call to action, attention to alcoholism and women in a way she can shine a light. >> i'm hoping that this documentary can really bring out a message and confront this

stigma that keeps so many women drinking in secret. >> reporter: lipstick & liquor, secrets in the suburbs, is a 78-minute film that seeks to inspire dialogue on women and alcoholism. jerry halley is julie's widow. >> julie was the love of my life. >> reporter: his wife was a recovering alcoholic and relapsed after losing her job. >> i didn't like it. i wasn't supportive of it. but i understood it. >> reporter: psychotherapist dr. anita gottia smith says alcoholism among suburban women who she refers to as kitchen drinkers is on the rise. >> because women have more access to money. they have more freedom. and they have more stresses. and so now women kind of have to be all things to all people. >> reporter: holly says his wife wasn't a bad mother but had a serious disease. >> people have asked me all the time, well, why didn't you leave her? you know, i took the part of my vows in sickness and in health.

i took that very seriously. >> reporter: butterfield hopes a response to the film will serve as a tool to educate. >> and we're hearing from people to tell us things like, i really want a copy of this so i can share it with my family so they can see what it's like. >> dr. gottia smith says the d.c. metro area is rich in alcoholism recovery efforts with more than 2,000 meetings weekly. to learn more about the documentary and get answers to questions on alcoholism, you can visit nbcwashington.com. >> thanks, erika. we want to show you some video out of new orleans about a guy really needs to be locked up because he's really stupid. put out a shotgun and demanded some money. the victim grabbed the gun. took it away from the guy and started going upside his head. chased him away. the suspect then drove back up to the victim and tried to bargain with him. asked him, would he give him his gun back? the victim wouldn't have it a second time. he bashed the gunman's car

window and the suspect sped away. this is one guy who really needs to find another line of work. police are still looking for the man who did it all. >> that will teach him. >> i guess. >> well, maybe not. >> let's hope so. >> may not be a teachable moment for him. so are we going to get a break? >> we're going to get a break, and i think we'll get a break in a big way. a lot of people finding the sunshine. looking for that sunshine. i think it's coming tomorrow. i think we'll see it maybe as early as the morning hours. earlier, looking like we may see more cloud cover, more fog tomorrow morning. maybe that's not the case. take a look outside right now. one thing you notice, we are seeing some clearing. the ceilings are rising, meaning the clouds rising back into the atmosphere as we are looking at temperatures on the mild side this evening. current temperature right now 59 degrees. we were sitting at 62 earlier. that was as high as we got after a low of 56. temperatures were about 10 degrees below average once again. 9 of the last 11 days below

average. and it does look like we're going to be at or below average for the next few days, too. but i think we'll get close over the next couple of days, too. right now 58 degrees. wind out of the northeast at 8 miles an hour with that northeasterly wind. we do have some drier air starting to work on in here. and with that, we're starting to see skies clear just a little bit. especially to the north. where they are clearing, they'll get cooler a lot quicker. 52 degrees in gaithersburg. where we have the clouds still mid to upper 50s. starting to see that clearing from the north. we did see some rainfall today. and most of us saw at least some drizzle or light rain most of the day. it doesn't amount to a whole lot. only 0.2 in washington. so it's much-needed rain across the area. when the sun comes out, your lawn is really going to respond. storm team 4 radar, not showing a lot. most of this is ground clutter. also back to the west still seeing light drizzle across the region. that may continue in parts of the area.

an area of low pressure to the south. high pressure to the north. see the clearing around philadelphia? pretty nice day there. that's starting to work its way in here. that's the drier air and that area of low pressure is starting to make its way down to the south and west as it moves farther south. we're going to see that drier air settle in. a nice wednesday and an even better thursday after some early morning fog on thursday. the high really starts to take over. we still get that easterly wind but we're on the warm side. temperatures closer to that average which right now sits at 72 to 73 degrees. mostly cloudy. looking dry tomorrow morning. 47 to 55 degrees. some of you may see sunshine starting off the morning. others down to the south may see some shower activity. clouds to su but a better afternoon tomorrow. 67 to 72 degrees. here's your next couple of days. 70 tomorrow. 71 on thursday. 71 on friday. that's a good couple of days. saturday looking good, too. highs close to 70. back above on sunday with a high of 73. and looks like we stay there for early next week. and i've got a chance of showers

history tonight. much to the chagrin of this guy. gio gonzalez has not performed well against the braves. an e.r.a. of over 6. his second pitch of the game, gobbled up by andrew simons. the solo shot puts the braves up 1-0. not all bad for gio, though. bottom of the second, simmons tries to lay down the bunt. check out the grab by gonzalez. man, he's laying out, showing some athleticism there, but, you know, the stats weren't so amazing. four innings, five earned runs but nine strikeouts. in the fifth, braves up 5-1. zach duke facing tim hudson and the other pitcher takes duke deep to right. bryce harper can't make the catch. watch this again. right off his glove. oh, he could have had it. hudson with his third career home run. he also added a double and picked up the 200th win of his career. the braves roll over the nats,
