"today" on a wednesday morning. i'm matt lauer. >> i'm savannah guthrie. it's hard to say on may 1st i'm about to say this, the snow is coming down. that's estes park, colorado. >> it has the potential to dump an unprecedented amount of snow late in the snow, up to a foot in some areas. >> we want to get right to al roker for the details. >> good morning, guys. yes, a powerful storm from estes park, denver, ft. collins looking at snow as well. we're going to be looking at a major winter storm even though it's may 1st. it's a powerful front system bringing snow from denver later on today from minneapolis, where you have winter storm warnings up for minneapolis. here's what's happening over the next 24 hours. storm gets itself together. starts off as rain and snow in minneapolis, changes over to all snow and then continues to push

to the west. here's what we see as far as accumulations. denver, anywhere and the surrounding areas, 6 to 9 inches of snow. some areas as much as a foot of snow. as we make our way to the west -- to the east, i should say, and north from mason city, minneapolis, on into wisconsin, another 6 to 9 inches of snow. down to the south there's a storm system that's part of this whole mess. it's going to be pushing in. some areas in southern florida picked up 10 inches of rain yesterday. then what we're looking for over the next 24 hours from new orleans into louisiana, into parts of florida, anywhere from 5 to 7 inches of rain. so, we've got snow and we've got flooding all out of the same system. matt? >> come on in, we'll get your local forecast in a couple of minutes. we're learning more about the events in boston that led police to the suspects in the marathon attack. we sat down with the 26-year-old

chinese entrepreneur who was carjacked by the brothers. he goes by danny and he asks us to conceal his face and modify his voice. >> it's the night after the bombing. >> yes. >> you're sitting in your car? >> i saw someone pull over to the curb just behind me and there was a person on the passenger side. he jump out of the car and walk to my car. he knocks on my window. i lower it down a little bit. suddenly he put his hand and open the door from the inside. >> what de say to you? >> he took out his gun, point it to me and say, where's the cash. >> can you show me how close he put the gun to you? >> right there, yes. >> right at your head? >> yeah. >> did in any way you think at that moment this is a guy the

fbi is looking for? >> no. i saw a different guy from the picture. >> he asked you a question, didn't you? have you been following the news from the bombing? >> i said, of course, i know. he said, i did that. and i just killed a policeman in cambridge. >> you took off driving, you had to be scared to death. >> yeah, i was -- >> how did you even manage to drive? >> at first i can't manage to drive. i was shaking. tam tam he told me, slow down. >> he slowed down as brother dzhokhar followed in a mercedes. when dzhokhar got in the car, de say anything to you in. >> he didn't say too much to me. it was pretty quiet. >> did you get a sense from the way they interacted with each other that they were equals? >> i think dzhokhar is like a

follower. >> why do you say that? >> because dzhokhar, he went out to the atm, he went out to get gas. tamerlan never get out of the car. >> so he was the guy dying the errands? >> yes. >> they loaded something from the second car into your suv? >> yes. >> what did they load into your car? >> i have an idea now. >> explosives. >> when you think you were driving around in that car with with two people who allegedly committed murder, in the back of the car there are explosives, what do you think now? >> i think i was really lucky. god was with me. >> danny considered many different ways to escape but he decided to make his move when they stopped at this gas station in cambridge. at that time of night they only took cash. >> only took cash. dzhokhar went to the store to take cash.

with only one in the car. >> if you are going to escape, it had to be quick. >> yes. >> what did you do? >> i think, unfasten my seat belt and open the door. >> with your left hand you undid the seat belt, with your right hand you opened the door and you took off? >> i took off. >> did you hear him react to you opening that door? >> he tried to grab me. i feel him trying to grab -- >> he tried to grab your back? >> yes. >> but just missed me? >> just missed me. it was very close. >> danny ran into a different gas station and called 911. he told police they could track the suspects through his car satellite system and the iphone he left behind. >> did you think because that happened and they did track them quickly that perhaps you prevented further bloodshed that night? >> i was trying to do, you know, what i can do. >> it couldn't have been too long after that, about a half

hour later there was a shootout? watertown. >> yes. >> and tamerlan was killed. >> yeah. >> what was your reaction? >> i was still worried they would come back to me. but when i heard of that news, i feel a little bit relief. >> we'll have more of our conversation with danny a little later in the show. including a section where he talks about getting a text message and then a phone call from his roommate. and tamerlan looked basically at him and said, you do anything stupid with that text message or the phone call, i'll kill you. it's a harrowing ordeal. >> i can't imagine how he's adjusted. how de seem to you? >> one is dead and one is in custody, as you can tell, he did not want his identity revealed. he will testify in the trial gladly and he knows he'll be identified at that time but for now he wants to stay under the radar. we're following a decision by the fda on who can buy the

so-called morning-after pill. dr. nancy snyderman, good morning. >> an emergency contraception known as plan b one-step because it's one pill. until for you it's been available to women 17 and over but this moefr because of yesterday's decision by the fda the age restriction is being changed to 15 and bei ining movo over the counter. beginning this morning it will appear at retail outlet with a label that says, not for sale under 15 years of age. the age restriction two years younger than it had been. the pill's manufacturer teva manufacturing called it a significant milestone for women. but lowering the age restriction is likely to dramatically raise the level of controversy, especially among parents and teens. >> i think the parents should know about -- if they're going to take some kind of pill like

that. >> i would want my child to speak with me, but not all families are the same. >> reporter: fda commissioner said in a statement the data reviewed by the agency demonstrated that women 15 years of age and older were able to understand how plan b one-step works and how to use it properly. the groups opposed to lowering the age restriction were quick to fire back. >> what tuesday's ruling did was remove sexually screening for those sexually active. most parents would agree that's not in the best interest of young women's health. >> reporter: two years ago an fda panel recommended all age restrictions on the so-called morning-after pill be removed. but health and human services katri kathleen sebelius changed that

but then she was overruled making the pill available to anyone regardless of age. we should note the fda ruling aplans to plan b morning after pill not on the restrictional plan b with two doses. >> what are the implications of a 15-year-old taking this drug? is it medically safe? also the maturity issue, is this something you're worried teenagers will use this as a regular birth control? >> there's no evidence that this is biologically can hurt you or cause problems down the line. now, where parents get wiggy is to think could my 15-year-old be having sex and the answer is, yes. 13, 14, 15-year-olds are having intercourse. so we have to talk about if we want to prevent abortions, should we allow birth control, condoms, and still have the

conversation about the difference between love and sex and remind kids this may prevent pregnancy but does not do anything for stds, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, but to prevent pregnancy, is it safe, yes, it is. >> thank you very much. tseven americans killed on monday when a national air cargo plane crashed in identified have been identified. this as a video shows a plane crashing. it is absolutely disturbing. the images show the 747 cargo plane rising to the sky over bagram airfield and then slowing to a stop in midair before falling to the ground and bursting into flames. again, the seven americans have been identified there. the death toll in the bangladesh factory collapse has topped 400 people and many workers last seen inside that

monday to help force feed 21 prisoners. even as the american medical association protested telling defense secretary hagel force feeding violates core ethical values of the medical profession. once a prisoner makes a rational decision to refuse food. president obama says it's yet another reason the prison must be closed. >> i don't want these individuals to die. obviously, the pentagon is trying to manage the situation as best as they can. but i think all of us should reflect on why exactly are we doing this? >> reporter: the military says dozens of prisoners clashed with guards two weeks ago after hiding makeshift weapons. >> how can the military hope to maintain discipline over a prison camp where there is absolutely no hope for those men confined here? >> reporter: the president tried to close guantanamo two days after he took office, but congress fought him at every turn. 86 prisoners, low-level

this morning on "rossen reports," dogs in filthy conditions. the american kennel club, may not be doing enough to protect animals. today national investigative correspondent jeff rossen is here. >> this will be eye-opening for a lot of people. when you buy a puppy, you want it to be happy, healthy and well treated and a lot of people depend on the american kennel club to be a breeder. you think it must stand for excellence, you're getting a good dog. but this morning we found disgusting conditions and sick dogs at akc-registered operations. >> the portuguese water dog. >> reporter: it is the epitome of canine perfection, the westminster dog show. >> the best in show -- >> reporter: and the american kennel club is proud to oversee it. on the akc's own website calling

itself the dog's champion, registering puppies with official puppies, inspecting breeders. many dog owners count on it, looking for that seal before purchasing a puppy. but critics say there's an ugly reality you don't see. some akc breeders raising deceased dogs, malnourished, living in their own filth. so disturbing, now two of the country's largest animal welfare groups, the aspca and the humane society, are condemning the akc. >> if i'm looking to buy a dog and i see it has been akc-inspected, akc gregistered, does that mean i'm getting a good dog? >> absolutely not. it's just a piece of paper with month practical value for dog welfare. >> reporter: lillian thought she was buying a dog from an

reputible breeder. >> i assumed i was getting a very healthy dog, coming from a quality kennel. >> reporter: what did you end up getting? >> a very sick puppy. >> reporter: sick, she says, with intestinal pair site aal p congenital eye defect. records show the akc had just inspected that kennel weeks earlier and found them in compliance. what did you make of that? >> i make that their standards must be low. >> reporter: turns out it wasn't just her dog suffering. law enforcement went into the kennel just two months later and rescued dozens of dogs. the breeders say they did nothing wrong, but according to a civil court judge, many of the dogs were in poor condition for a substantial period of time. remember, the akc had been here and signed off on the place. >> time and time again we're going and raiding places and

finding these dogs in miserable conditions. >> reporter: he says while most akc-registered breeders are probably fine, they're seeing too many bad apples. from montana to north carolina. in some cases those breeders are even convicted of animal cruelty. so we went straight to the akc. if you had to grade your inspection program, what grade would you give yourself? >> i'd give us an "a." in fact, our inspection program is more than 98% in compliance. >> reporter: critics say that's just smoke and mirrors. breeders pay the akc registration fees for every dog. yet the akc has no idea what goes on at many of those kennels. nationwide how many breeders are there that have akc-registered dogs? >> that's a great question. we don't know. >> reporter: you don't know? >> i don't know. no, i'm sorry. >> reporter: what percentage of breeders that do have akc registered dogs end up getting inspected? >> we've done 55,000 inspections

since 2000. >> reporter: what percentage of breeders get inspected? >> it's varies. >> reporter: ballpark. >> i don't know. >> reporter: how many inspectors? >> nine inspectors. >> reporter: that cover the entire country? >> that's correct. >> reporter: do you think that's an adequate number? >> that's the number we have. >> reporter: and there's more. animal rights groups say the akc is actually protecting bad breeders. fighting laws that would regulate breeders based on the number of dogs they have. and require new standards or inspections. you have opposed laws in several states that would crack down on breeders. why? >> we oppose breeder limit laws because it's not the number of dogs that you own. it's the care and conditions in which they're kept. >> they should be helping the humane society in its efforts to crack down on these awful breeders. but they're protecting them. >> if you are looking to buy a puppy, experts say you should always visit the breeder first

emotional story that's pitting the parents of a 5-month-old boy against police. tamron is back with this. >> good morning. this started a few weeks ago when anna and alex nicolayev took their son to the hospital in sacramento. they left without an official discharge to get a second opinion on his heart condition and then they watched as sammy was taken away before their eyes. alex and anna nicolayev relieved to hold their 5-month-old son sammy who suffers from heart murmur for as long as they want. something they were unable to do just a few days ago. he was taken by police and child protective service after the couple removed him from sutter memorial hospital against medical advice. >> i said, i want to go to a

different hospital. she said, if you want to go, your son will be here. i took my son, put him in a stroller and walked out of the hospital. >> reporter: after getting a second opinion on his condition at near bay kaiser hospital, sammy was cleared to go home with his parents. the next day police came to their house and took sammy away, all captured on home video, taken with anna's camera. >> i did not know where my son was. they ripped my baby out of my heart, like out of my hands and walked away. i did not know what to do. where to start. where is he? >> this is a case that violates a fourth amendment violation and 14th amendment violation. >> any doctor, any hospital, anyone, doesn't have the right to make decisions about a child's health care. >> reporter: at a court hearing earlier this week, a judge ruled sammy be brought to the hospital at stanford for evaluation and his parents regained control of his medical treatment, but also stated the parents must follow all medical advice moving

forward and not remove their son from the hospital without proper discharge. >> we've been asking is that we get treatment in a different hospital, that we're going to have a second opinion. that's all we've been asking for and we got it. >> reporter: sacramento county child protective services told nbc news, the law is clear. if there is imminent risk of serious physical harm to the child and there is insufficient time to obtain a court order to remove the child from the care of the parents, the social worker or law enforcement officer can remove the child. and sutter memorial hospital released a statement saying, our nurses and physicians are bound by duty to call authorities if they believe a pediatric patient's health is in danger. we fully support the judge's decision and are confident the family will receive an excellent second opinion. sammy is awaiting his transfer, but for anna and alex, having time with their son is enough for now. >> he closed has eyes for a second and then he opens his eyes right away and he looks to

and prayers from people everywhere. >> oh, everywhere. >> you truly believe, and this is partly what this book is about, that it was those prayers that were answered. >> definitely. i mean, we relied heavily on prayer. when i was in spain, i was so grateful for the gift of prayer. i couldn't get to my son for 24 hours. so, the prayer was vital. >> and, again, being deeply religious people, a lot of people would question their faith after an accident like the one ryan went through. pat, i was very interested the way you put it. you said this, you didn't think that god caused this to happen. you think he allowed it to happen. >> yeah. >> and i wonder what you mean by that. >> well, he doesn't prevent our -- the consequences of our decisions. you know, ryan and his buddy went up on the roof to get some sun. there was a skylight. it was not marked. it wasn't guarded. people knew it was there. he must have tripped in some way and fallen through. there are consequences to actions. but god says, i'll go through it with you.

career advice for three women who sought our help to you. good morning. >> good morning. >> why are people feeling a rut or want a change? >> it's true. in fact, throughout our lives at some point we're going to be in a rut but we'll find ourselves in a place that just doesn't fit. it's our job to get ourselves out of it. >> we have three women who have different kinds of issue. let's bring out mary ann. i understand she's worked in the same industry about 15 years and she really wants to get a better work/life balance, is that what you say? >> yes, exactly. >> what would you advid advise? >> you've been in the same job for 15 years and you love it, but at this point the industry's changed and you're not feeling connected to the work anymore. >> right. >> number one, i think what happens when we're not happy in our jobs is we start to find negativity ramping up. you need a no-negative zone around you. you have to vent, surely, but make sure you're coming every day to positive conversation. start going to industry events where you can interact with
