contained. this is the biggest in a series of blazes throughout the state that have broken out under dry and windy conditions. at the live desk, melissa mollet, news4. today president obama begins a three-day trip to mexico. he'll meet later today with the mexican president. we expect the leaders to talk about the immigration reform bill congress is debating right now. they'll also likely discuss trade ties between the two countries. president obama will also visit costa rica during his trip and meet with that country's president as well. an early morning for churches in our area as they mark the national day of prayer. the day of prayer is held every may and it invites americans of all faiths to give thanks for blessings and pray for guidance and protection for the country. president obama is specifically asking churches to pray for victims and survivors of the boston bombings, texas fertilizer plant explosion and the in ynewtown shooting. gay rights groups are protesting the honorary chairman.

he's set to officially open the day of prayer at the pentagon later this morning. gay rights advocates want the pentagon to withdraw the invitati invitation. our northern virginia bureau will be in court when a former culpeper police officer is sentenced for manslaughter. prosecutors say he shot cook in her car in the parking lot of a catholic cook last year. harmon-wright says he fired when cook rolled the window on his arm and started to drive away. a witness said his hand was on a door handle. three minutes after the hour. we expect hate crime charges to be filed today against a northern virginia businessman accused of attacking a taxi driver. >> you're prejudice?

when it comes to driver's license. he and other city leaders will introduce a bill allowing all d.c. residents to get a license even if they're here illegally. congress would have so sign off on that legislation. and mayor gray will also be here at union station today. he'll help celebrate the completion of the columbus plaza rehabilitation project. columbus plaza is the park in front of union station. crews have spent the last 18 months making it safer and less confusing for drivers and pedestrians. we're learning more about three of the boston marathon bombing suspect's friends facing charges themselves. two in custody for more than a week now. they violated their student visas by not going to classes regularly at umass dartmouth. they hit and destroyed evidence when they saw their friend's picture on television after the attack. a third friend is also charged with lying to federal investigators. the fbi does not believe any of

at 5:13. breaking news in alexandria this morning. let's go to tony tull with the latest on the power outages in old town. >> reporter: good morning. i can give you some information. the reason for some of these power outages is there's a dominion substation in the area of alexandria that had a couple transformers explode and that's the report from alexandria

police. they fixed a lot of them but a few are still out. that's the reason some of the power is out here in old town alexandria. we're here at king and washington. you can see a lot of alexandria police officers here on the scene putting up stop signs. you see one here in the intersection directing traffic. if you come here to this area or if you come to a place that has traffic lights still out, you treat it as a four-way stop. if you take a look here along king street, you can see a lot of all of the businesses along king street here and washington are without power still. you can see the alexandria police car on the corner making sure people navigate that intersection as well. earlier this morning about 800 people without power due to that explosion in the southwest qu quadra quadrant. we drove through there on the way to this location and power is back on in that residential area. a lot of lights out here in this intersection. few others in this area of old town alexandria if you come again to these intersections

closer to being roarecognized i two more states. if approved, it would make rhode island the tenth state to recognize same-sex marriage along with maryland and the district. and delaware could become the 11th state to legalize gay marriage. it cleared a state committee last night and will come before the full senate next tuesday. it narrowly passed the state house last week. delaware began recognizing same-sex civil unions last year. if passed, those civil unions would be converted to marriages. the white house may be giving serious thought to helping arm syrian rebels. several diplomats want to give rebels weapons now that there's mounting evidence syria's military is using chemical weapons against them. they may be also changing their minds because they say it appears many rebels are distancing themselves from groups that are tied to al qaeda. an american man is facing 15 years of hard labor in north korea. kenneth bay was sentenced yesterday. north korea state media says he

was convicted of crimes against the state. we don't know what those crimes involved. bay is a tour operator from washington state arrested last november in a special economic zone in north korea that borders china and russia. today the vatican will once again be home to two popes. pope emeritus benedict will move into his new retirement home in the vatican gardens today. he spent the last two months at the papal vacation home. benedict retired at the end of february. the first pope to do that in more than 600 years. let's go back to melissa mollet at the live desk. >> good morning. we're just learning about a big announcement we expect today about the national mall. it's a $10 million donation from volkswagen. they plan to overhaul the area with gardens and restaurants. they'll donate the money to the trust for the national mall to jump-start fund-raising. it's the largest private gift to restore the most visited national park. at the live desk, melissa mollet, news4.

gym. police say three men broke the padlocks on the lockers at the supreme sports club in columbia, maryland, last week stealing credit cards and cash and the men then went on a shopping spree spree. justice this morning for a man brutally beaten on capitol hill. tommy branch was found guilty yesterday on six counts of robbing and beating maslin last august. he's accused of beating maslin almost to death with a baseball bat. maslin has had six surgeries since that attack and still has trouble walking and talking it. branch is one of three accused in that attack. he faces up to 100 years in jail. don't forget to lock your car door is what police are telling people in northwest washington. police say there have been almost 80 car break ins in the last two months. people who live there say they feel violated. the advisory neighborhood commission says it's tough for police to find culprits because

allergy. the study says skin conditions like eczema decrease with age. the group says they don't know what's behind the spike but the study showed children living in affluent families were more likely to develop allergies. a study of store bought lipstick suggests the makeup may be increasing your exposure to toxic metals. researchers at the university of california berkeley tested over 30 different lipsticks and lip glosses and examined the amount of metal each contained including lead, and aluminum. scientists found on average the use of lipstick could increase the amount in the blood which has been linked to stomach tumors. you should not experience harmful effects but keep away from children. you may see more programming from dreamworks on youtube. it's buying awesomeness tv.
