this morning. a couple showers here. good faithering burg down to bethesda. south of town along i-95, all getting in on the light rain shower this is morning. current temperatures are in the mild, mid-60s. looking for highs in the upper 60s to right around 70 degrees. keep the umbrella handy. breaking news, we are learning right now about a missile launch out of north korea. nbc news reports the country launched three short-range missiles into the sea off the east coast of the korean peninsula. the military tracked the missiles. it's not clear what kind of missiles might have been launched. this all comes after months of rising tensions between north korea and the u.s. and south korea. we'll bring you new information when we get it. also an earthquake rocks the coast of japan. a magnitude 6.0 quake hit just northwest of the fukushima power plant. that's 173 miles northeast of

tokyo. so far no reports of any damage to the plant. also police say a man is dead and his wife is the killer. this is the view from blossom drive in sterling. this was a bit difficult to see from chopper 4's view. this is where deputies say they found the body of the man in the home. wheen meanwhile no word on if the wife is in custody. a u.s. airways plane made an emergency landing without their landing gear. it happened at 1:00 this morning. a spokesman said the plane experienced problems and had to make a belly landing. 34 people were on board and no one was hurt. right now crews are still trying to clean up after a train collision last night in connecticut. it started to affect travel throughout the northeast. right now all amtrak service is

suspended from new york to new haven. dozens of people who were on the trains are recovering. >> it was like a loud bang and you saw smoke. >> reporter: lionel had just hopped on the metro north train heading to grand central when the collision occurred. >> so nervous and scared. i've never had anything like this happen. we were all panicked. we didn't know what to do. you could hear everybody saying to relax and stay calm. i hear basically is there a doctor on board? when i heard that, i knew. >> reporter: he suffered a lower back injury, but is thankful to be walking away. the same can be said for laura brooks. >> we heard a boom. and the train had jumped. it seemed like we were out of our seat. >> reporter: she took the train to drop off prom dresses for the less fortunate. she suffered a knee injury. >> i looked at the front of the train and it was all messed up.

>> reporter: she limped out where 41 people arrive d by ambulance or in their own cars. diane auger says they were prepared for the worst. >> we heard we might expect 90 patients here. as it turned out so far it hasn't been as bad as we originally thought. >> reporter: the majority of the injuries are minor, but one patient was hurt seriously. >> shoulder pain, leg pain, back pain, people who were jostled. but nothing as serious as the head and neck injury that we have. >> i can't believe it's happening. my lower back is tight. just trying to get through this. >> that was george collie reporting from connecticut. meanwhile back here we have some delays for those of you that take metro. crews are working on three of the five lines. on the green line, three stations are shut down. greenbelt and prince george's

plaza. that could cause problems for those trying to get to graduation. two are closed on the orange line. you'll also see single tracking on the red line. we have a traffic alert on i-95 in virginia. this is a big deal if you're about to hit the road. right now, the northern section of the hov lanes is closed. that's between d.c. down to the springfield parkway. those lanes will stay closed until 10:00 tomorrow. the closure will allow for work on the 95 express lanes project. the powerball is worth an estimated $600 million. and that could grow before tonight's drawing. news 4's derrick ward is live in the district where people are buying up their lottery tickets. a lot of people hoping they are going to get lucky there. what's the word? >> reporter: indeed they are. we are at 40th and wisconsin. this place has a reputation not necessarily for the big winning, but they do get winners from

lawmakers on both sides of aisle are spending the weekend figure out where to go next with its instigation into the irs. the agency faces another capitol hill grilling on tuesday over

the targeting of conservative groups. yesterday the agency's former acting chief apologized for what he called foolish mistakes by employees. he denied any political motivation, but lawmakers didn't buy it. they promised the investigation is just getting started. tomorrow marks one month since the manhunt and arrest of dzhokhar tsarnaev. and this morning federal prosecutors say they are going to ask more time to indict the suspected bomber. prosecutors have not said under which exception they will try to apply for an extension. the 19-year-old is charged with using a weapon of mass destruction in the bombings at the boston marathon that killed three and hurt more than 260. new from overnight, severe weather strikes north texas. just take a look at a twister in young county. this is east of dallas. the sheriff there says it was one of at least three tornadoes that may have touched down last

night. one house took a direct hit. so far there have not been any reports of any injuries. more families are returning home since tornadoes hit granbury, texas. a serious of twisters hit wednesday night killing six people. we are hearing from one of the youngest survivors. 6-year-old cole curly remembers everything that happened when a twister hit his home. >> reporter: cole curly covered his eyes as the family rushed out during the storm, but as he came home for the first time today, his eyes were wide open. the tiny steps of this 6-year-old led him through a house ravaged by the storm, but he also began to walk back through the memories of that night. >> i was scared. and i heard these noises and i thought something blew off the roof. >> reporter: this is that

island. 63 in leesburg. your hour by hour forecast for today, in the low to mid-60s now. we're only going to move up a couple degrees today. upper 60s to around 70 degrees. it's not going to be a total washout of a day, but rain chances will be the dotting the landscape all through your saturday. if you're headed to the preakness, it's not going to be a washout, but i would have some sort of rain protection with you. they should be able to run it in mostly dry conditions. the allergy forecast in the low range for today and tomorrow. but as we move back into the warmer weather on monday, allergy forecast into the median range. showers around. the bulk of the rain will be south of the washington area. tomorrow morning, the marine core historic half marathon in virginia, i will be one of the runners down there. i will be the starter for the race at 6:59 a.m.

and tomorrow morning race temperatures generally in the low to mid-60s. about 10,000 people expected to run the race. here's radar this morning. not much going on in and around town and points north. carol county is dry. but south of town, that's where the bulk of the rain chances are. that's where the rain chances will be staying. sandy spring, bethesda getting a few sprinkles this morning. nothing heavy. south along i-95, that's where the steadier rain showers are. you folks in st. mary's county, that's where the rain chances will be strongest off and on through the rest of the day today. you can see that little ribbon of rain showers from the washington area to points down to the south. here's your seven-day forecast. about 70 today. 72 tomorrow. 70% rain chances for today and tomorrow. it's a high percentage but a low amount of rain we're expecting.

republican candidate for virginia governor becomes the official gop nominee. attorney general ken cuccinelli will be formally nominated as the republican candidate this morning. this is happening at the second day of the republican party of virginia's state convention. a poll released this week shows the democrat pulling ahead by a 5% margin. one organization is planning to crash the party. planned parenthood is expected to protest the event. the action fund has launched a website called keep kent out. this is to protest some of his policies. julie carey will be in richmond for the nomination and all the action. catch her reports later today on news 4. in the day ahead, d.c. council member tommy wells will throw his hat in the race for d.c. mayor. he will announce his candidacy at noon. he has been on the council since 2006. wells is the second member to

announce their candidacy. d.c. council member bouser announced hers. now more on that developing story out of connecticut. amtrak service from new york to new haven is suspended after two commuter trains collided. it it could take a few days to get traffic back to normal. this morning nbc's seth lemon is outside one of the hospitals with the very latest. >> reporter: it's been a long night here at st. vincent's medical center. they did not have to stay overnight. people are saying it's not as bad as it it could have been based on how bad the crash looked. there were only seven reported serious injuries. many walked away with only minor

injuries. >> so far it hasn't been as bad as we originally thought. >> we don't know what caused it it. and having said that, these trains at that hour are in fairly constant use. so just before these trains came into contact with one another, others had been through the same spot. that's all i can tell you. >> reporter: just to provide perspective, it's more like the mark train than the subway system. the ntsb is leading the investigation with help from the department of transportation and that investigation is ongoing. reporting from connecticut, seth lemon, news 4. right now a heads up. one runway is closed until tomorrow afternoon. the other will be closed early tomorrow morning from midnight to 5:00 a.m. they are closing the runways so crews can make improvements to

today prince george's public schools are looking for bus drivers. there's a job fair happening at wise high school. job seekers must bring a copy of their driving record. the school will pay for training for new hires. the job fair runs until 1:00 this afternoon. today marks one year since the world's biggest social networking site went public on wall street. facebook had its ipo a year ago today. many believed it it would be bigger than amazon, but the highest sale date was 23 cents higher than its sale on day one

scientists have said that sea lions are intelligent animals. it looks like they are caring as well. this video is showing a girl
