i'm in for jim rosenfield. we are getting new insight this evening in to the coupled in that deadly shooting in northern virginia. the victim an airport police officer. neighbors say there have been signs of trouble in the past. it unfolded on blossom drive in sterling. it ended with a husband and father dead. a porch light on but there's no one home. >> what i don't understand is what really happened in there. >> reporter: the family that lived inside of this sterling house now divide. mother and wife is in jail tonight. she is charged with shooting and killing her husband. this neighbor knows the family. their kids play together. recently he sensed something was not right. >> i know the lady was talking about some problem they have in the house. >> reporter: not wanting to show her face another neighbor

invited us in to her home. she said she knew the victim for 15 years. >> from my own personal experience, he threatened my life twice. >> reporter: she says steven sprading was a police officer at dulles airport. but said he scared many in the community including his own wife now a suspect. >> i'm sad about what happened yesterday but i feel safer in my own house and yard now. >> reporter: still she's left feeling unsettled. i don't know what happened last night. i wasn't there. but to have someone killed and to have known this person all of these years and though he made threats against me it is an odd feeling. >> reporter: police say that she was arrested and read miranda rights in front of her home. she is charged with first-degree murder. as for the kids, they are staying with family friends. reporting from sterling, virginia, news 4. developing news on the commuter train crash in

connecticut. investigators ruled out foul play as a cause of the crash. investigators say there were no signs of criminal activity and the fbi is no longer involved. ntsb officials are looking closely at a fracture on one of the rails to determine fit broke before or after the crash. that rail has been sent to a lab now for analysis. meanwhile, amtrak service is suspended between new york and new haven indefinitely. 72 passengers were injured in the collision. three remain in critical condition tonight. expect crowded streets around college park tomorrow them university of maryland commencement begins at 11:00 in the morning and the college park metro station will be closed. metro is providing free shuttle bus service for passengers. greenbelt and prince georges plaza stations will be closed. ridership was low during commencement last year so buses should be able to handle the

demand. tonight we unchartered territory. people are holding on to their powerball tickets. it is worth $600 million. stores over here were bustling with ticket buyers all evening long. this is the largest powerball. pow ders ball officials say 80% of all possible number combinations have been picked. so they think tonight's the night. someone will hit that jackpot. here are the winning numbers. 10, 13, 14, 22 , 52 and the powerball is 11. if nobody wins tonight, the jackpot could swell to as much as $1 billion. two tornados touched down tonight in kansas another in nebraska. a storm chasing crew captured this amazing video over farmland

in central kansas. meteorologists say another tornado touched down not far from there. so far no reports of any major damage. it is expected to be the start of several days of severe weather in that region. tonight, oklahoma and kansas are bracing for the worst of it. nothing severe in our area tonight, but we might see more rain drops tomorrow. storm team 4 meteorologist chuck has a look at the forecast. cloudy, drizzly, mist iy in the capital tonight. very it will until the way of rainfall out there, especially in the metro area. if you are out walking this evening you will notice a little mist and drizzle. it wasn't show up on the radar too well. there's more where this came. from expect damp conditions overnight. temperatures for the most part upper 50s northern maryland 2060 degrees in and around the metro. sunday starter, cloudy and damp first ning the morning.

rain chances begin first thing tomorrow morning and off and on rain chances through sunday. we will talk about that in the back to work forecast with the seven day coming up. investigators in southwestern virginia are looking at whether a medical emergency caused an elderly driver to plow in to a parade this afternoon. 50 were hurt and ten sent to the hospital. this unfolded in damascus, virginia, near bris. to police have not released the name or age of the driver but he was among those taken to the hospital. more trouble for the baltimore city jail. a new report out by the department of justice shows inmate suffer the second highest level of sexual abuse by guards in the country. it comes after inmate and alleged gang member tayvon white was involved in bribing correction officers to help him

and is accused of impregnating several guards in the jail. virginia state republicans have picked their candidate for three statewide offices. voting wrapped up with the party's convention in richmond. after multiple ballots, jackson received the nod for lieutenant governor. k he will likely face democratic nominee in november. julie kerry spoke to him about the nomination. >> we can all turn and focus on a unified fashion on winning in november. we have an advantage on the republican side. we have our ticket three and a half weeks before the democrats. >> planned parenthood of virginia protested his nomination. the d.c. mayoral race is starting to take shape.

ward six council member wells announced he is running. he said the district is in a crisis of ethics and vowed to bring respect back to city politics. >> people are concerned that people are working for corporations and special interests and not for us, and we have seen examples of that. we have seen the greatest ethical crisis in our city since the beginning of home rule. >> reporter: wells emphasized the need for transportation and school improvements. he joins ward four council member muriel bowser who entered the race last month. jack evans is expected to announce in a few weeks. mayor gray hasn't announced whether he will seek a second term. he was the even money favorite going in but there were no black eyed susans today after the preakness.

investigators are working to figure out why the landing gear and backup system failed on a light to newark this morning. the failures made for a scary landing. the flight was coming from philadelphia and had to land on its belly. it was a u.s. airways express flight operated by piedmont. 31 passengers and three crew members were on board. the plane was met by dozens of firefighters and other emergency personnel who quickly got everyone off the craft. no one was hurt. one of new jersey's iconic summer spots ready for business this weekend.

a 31-year-old murder victim was honored today at the college graduation ceremony he never got to attend. the mother of williams accepted his diploma. she is still waiting for answers about his death. news 4's derrick ward spoke to her and other family members who honored williams today. >> crossing the stage at the ceremony at catholic university the most applause and tribute

for one who wasn't there, and couldn't be there. his family was presented with his diploma. >> it hurts me because i know how much he wanted this. >> reporter: he had finished his courses at catholic university's metropolitan school last fall but in march was gunned down as he returned home to his apartment. he died a few feet from his door. >> i'm proud of my son's hard work. because he was very motivated. >> he was so dedicated. he was a very bright student. >> williams had a support system, church members, family and friends. some admired his determination. >> for all of those this should have been a happy day. >> it was a happy day but the wakt of loss was there as well. >> it is a somber moment. i'm exceptionally proud.

now is memorial day weekend, everybody. that's the unofficial beginning of summer for sure. full overcast over the nation's capitol tonight. a cool, misty drizzle as well. 61 is the current temperature. dew point temperatures in the upper 50s. overnight lows won't drop her that that. we will hover where we are. winds are light out of the northeast at 7 miles an hour. the wind will come to the south and southeast by later on tomorrow. upper 50s to around 60 for now. an again not much rain on the radar right now. storm showers will dot the landscape and highs tomorrow like today, upper 60s to around 70 degrees. historic half marathon, the marine corps half marathon i will be running it 7 a.m. sharp tomorrow morning. cool and mist and drizzle first thing in the morning and rain chances continue through the race time. you will probably not need your

sunglasses. you may need your snorkel. it could be on the wet side. cool and cloudy for now. yes indeed the summertime is on its way back. highs tomorrow near 70. mid to upper 70s by monday, tuesday and wednesday in the middle of the week mid to upper 80s coming our way. with the heat and humidity will come afternoon thunderstorm chances. here's the way it looks right now. mist and drizzle doesn't show up well on the radar. steadier rain showers in the virginia north carolina border lifting northbound. if they hold together long enough they will be in fredericksburg before the sun comes up tomorrow morning. there is potential for rather soggy race day tomorrow. overnight sprinkles will give way to shower chances through much of sunday. better chance you will get actual rain tomorrow than around here today. the warmer air moves in as we head to monday and gets toasty by the middle of the week. overnight, cloudy and cool with a light rain and drizzle. 56 to 62 for overnight lows.

and then tomorrow, rain likely just about anytime. heaviest rain is south of town, upper 60s and low 70s. only 70 tomorrow. pushing 80 on monday. the risk of showers could have a rumble of thunder late afternoon. look at the heat by tuesday and wednesday. upper 80s. some spots might be able to touch 90 degrees on tuesday and wednesday will be unsettled with afternoon and evening shower and thunderstorm chances in the middle of the week. we should faem size on should because it is memorial day weekend, it should be cooler and drier. that is welcome news for next weekend. >> thank you, chuck. coming up in sports a hall of famer shines at the preakness ♪

with rosario before the race and here they are orb with a decent start on the inside but oxbow pulls ahead to take an early lead in the race. let's skip ahead to the final turn now and stevens still has oxbow in front. trying to hold on to the victory. orb falling back. it is the 50-year-old leading oxbow to the win. it's stevens' third win at the preakness stakes. >> gary stevens did. >> i'm not going to lie to you. to win a classic at 50 years old rs retirement, it doesn't get any better than this. it is super sweet and it happened for the right guy. all of the stars were aligned and i couldn't be more pleased winning this thing. it's even more special winning it for wayne lucas and his team. the last time gary stevens

won the preakness was in 2001. that same year he won the belmont stakes. the belmont stakes will take place in june on june 8th. over in boxing now, d.c. native lamont peterson was fighting for pride tonight. no belts on the line in atlantic city. peterson took on lucas. it was a big payday and potential meeting with garcia for the winner of the fight. this one was scheduled to go 12 rounds but only made it to the third. very heavy handed gets a good shot on peterson. he goes down. peterson did get up and continue to fight, but a few seconds later, peterson is back on the mat. he has won his last six fights by way of knockout. let's talk a little baseball. the nationals are out on a road trip. jordan zimmerman on the mound and every time he pitches good

word can describe the maryland women's lacrosse team, perfection. the terps were a perfect 20-0 this season and the only thing standing their way to a fifth straight birth to the final four was duke. school pride for the terps all the way down to their stick. they took an early lead and never looked back in the game. kristin layman here and maryland is up 4-1. still first half and the show was just beginning. she comes around and fakes high. goes low. unassisted as the terps take an 8-4 lead at the half. the second half is behind the net where she finds a cutting katie schwartzman oss moves in to third place for most points in a single season for maryland with five goels and two assists on the day. the terps advance with a 14-9 win. they will play syracuse friday in the final four. >> they are on fire. >> really are. >> we are all here.
