send off. he'll give the commencement address at morehouse college. he left on air force one within the past half hour. morehouse is historically a black liberal arts college. michelle obama spoke to graduates and also at a high school in nashville. the president is expected to be back in washington later this afternoon. it's graduation day for thousands of students at the university of maryland. right now, they're getting ready for the big day. getting there though, that could be a problem. the three closest metro stations are closed for track work this morning. green belt, college park and prince george's plaza are all shut down. news4's derrick ward is live in college park with more on the potential travel tie-ups. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, they're hoping there won't be tie-ups. you can just see some of that e? that this is -- this equipment that this is all about. they're working on ties and if

you are planning to use metro to get out to the university of maryland today, you need to add half and hour to your travel time. that's what metro is advising. now, shuttle buses will be running between the west hyattsville station and they're making stops at prince george's plaza. and it will be the usual campus shuttle service between college park and the campus. so the key is that if you're taking that route you'll be brought here by a metro shuttle. instead of a train. now, plenty of people are on hand to direct you and it's kind of quiet now. but they're expecting it will get more busy around 1:00. that's when the commencement begins. that -- and they're expecting record crowds at the campus. the speaker will be cal ripken, jr. add about 30 minutes to your travel time. live in college park, back to you. >> thank you. in addition to the three green line station, two others are closed on the orange line.

that's boston and virginia square. you're going to see some single tracking on the red line time between dupont circle and van ness and takoma. right now the coast guard is looking for two men whose boat capsized in the rappahannock river. this is happening near the town of tap athan knock in essex county. somebody nearby saw the boat sinking and managed to rescue one of the bmen on the board. there were two others on board who won't wearing flotation vests. investigators are looking into whether a man behind the wheel suffered a medical emergency when he crashed into a parade crowd in southwestern virginia. the crash happened yesterday during the hikers parade in damasc damascus. he was driving his 1997 cadillac in the parade when it suddenly accelerated into the crowd. as many as 60 people were hurt. >> we heard screams behind us. and he sort of pushed us out of the way from it.

this morning, federal agents are looking into another case of poison letters sent in the mail. the latest letters were postmarked from spokane, washington. and mailed to the downtown post office as well as a nearby federal building. agents say they contained traces of ricin. we don't know if they were addressed to anyone in particular. they're searching an apartment in spokane right now. no arrests have been made in this case. several colleges and universities bid a fond farewell to their graduates today. northern virginia college and george university will flip their tassels today. cal ripken, jr. addresses the grads this morning and chuck todd he'll address marymount university. meanwhile, a student from catholic student will not cross the stage. his life ended in a deadly shooting in the district.

williams finished his courses at the school last fall. in march he was gunned down in an apparent robbery attempt. he was on his way home from work to his apartment. his mother accepted his diploma at his graduation ceremony yesterday. >> i'm proud of my son's hard work. because he was very motivated. >> williams' mothers hopes someone will come forward with information and lead to the arrest in the murder. and today is a long road to a diploma. some students will graduate alongside a woman who has been cleaning the dorms at the school. isabelle booth has been juggle her custodial work along with classes for 12 years. she first dropped out of school in mexico city to help her

family 50 gleyears ago. booth will pursue a masters degree. and she said she did it for herself because she wanted to learn. >> now she'll move on to more education. those of us who use smartphones are doing a lousy job of taking care of it. there's proof right this. >> yeah. that's the conclusion of an influential consumer group. >> reporter: given what "consumer reports" magazine found in its report, somebody suggested maybe we'd all be better off sticking with dumb phones. >> think of it as a cell phone, but it's like a little computer in your pocket. >> reporter: a minicomputer that contains more and more of the personal data. yet, the survey found nearly 40% of us don't even bother to take with simple password protection. >> your phone is like a master key to your bank account information, your social networks. so so many different things.

during a leak investigation and an inspector general report found that the irs targeted tea party and conservative groups improperly. the president is trying to pivot from those as we look to next week. but the irs scandal is not going away. people already don't like the irs and this only adds to it. it has the potential to derail the president's second term agenda. obama wants immigration reform done but he has to show he's on top of this scandal to restore credibility to the agency or it will give conservatives a big opening to say, see, the government can't run the irs. how can it implement health care or properly secure the border? it will be very thorny in the it will be very thorny in the next few days and it will

at the park with her father. she ran out of the car when she was hit. the driver stayed on the scene and the toddler was taken to the hospital. as of right now we don't have word on her condition. new this morning, we are getting our very first look at the 42-year-old woman arrested for her husband's murder in loudoun county. rosangela spradling is accused of shooting and killing 52-year-old steven spradling. he worked for the police force at the metropolitan washington airport authority. neighbors say they knew something was wrong. >> i know that the lady was talking about some problem they have in the house. >> the couple's two children were inside the home at the time of the shooting. neither of them were hurt. they are staying with relatives right now. spradling meanwhile has been charged with murder and is being held without bond. the race for virginia governor is heating up this morning. the three republican nominees, for governor, and attorney

general are all gearing up for a tour across the commonwealth. they're come off the heels of this weekend's party convention. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey talked exclusively with ken cuccinelli about what it means for the race. >> reporter: the real drama at the virginia gop convention came as delegates picked their nominee for lieutenant governor from seven candidates. after multiple ballots and a marathon session to narrow the field they nominated minister e.w. jackson from chesapeake. for attorney general, mark obenshain from harrison burg. and with no gop opponent there was no drama as ken cuccinelli was nominated. he helps to follow in the footsteps of his republican predecessor bob mcconnell who rose from attorney general to governor. known better for his ardent anti-abortion views and his crusade against obama care, cuccinelli is laying groundwork

to focus instead on virginia's economy. news4 because the only washington station cuccinelli spoke with when he stepped off the stage. >> the headline message out of here is that i hope all 10,000 or how ever many republicans are here go out together and pushing our pro jobs, pro growth agenda. >> reporter: he insists that republicans will move ahead united. >> there have been elbows thrown, but it's competitive. but a lot of the themes have been consistent from one candidate to the other. >> reporter: while ken cuccinelli's nomination was initial today he has been running against his opponent terry mcauliffe for months now. the rest of the democratic field, and the attorney general's spot will be finalized in a statewide primary on june 11th. not everyone out there was in support of cuccinelli and the republican party. planned parenthood protested outside the event. cuccinelli was one of the biggest advocates of strict

rules for abortion clinics. the planned parenthood action fund started running web ads opposing cuccinelli within the past week. d.c. ward 6 councilman tommy wells is vowing to bring respect back to d.c. politics. he didn't let the rain get in the way of the announcement. he is running for d.c. mayor. he's a former school board member. he arrived at the campaign launch on a regularly scheduled bus. he's emphasizing his support for better transportation, schools and what he calls a livable, walkable city. >> residents like us are very concerned about the future of washington, because we have had a crisis of ethics down in the wilson building. people are concerned that people are working for corporations and special interests and not for us. >> wells joins ward 4 council member muriel bowser. and jack evans is expected to announce in a couple of weeks.

kansas. the storm chasers from the weather channel captured this. as many as four twisters were reported. the outbreak of tornadoes damaged at least one house and uprooted several trees. >> wow. i wouldn't get that close. >> yeah, exactly. brave souls. some crazy weather going on in this parts -- >> absolutely. portions of the midwest will once again see severe weather today. ef-3 tornadoes will likely be seen in some of those same areas that saw severe weather yesterday. the hail from some of the storms yesterday, very impressive. baseball sized hail. that's possible in the midwest once again today. here not the case. it's a cloudy, damp start to the day. we'll start to see more scattered rain shower ins the afternoon. maybe you're out going for a run. grab the rain gear as you do that but know that more substantial rain will be found on the radar later today. for tomorrow, we'll see some scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms. tomorrow though will not be as

"snl" alum amy poehler helped out. a good thing, pretty funny too. it was bill hader's final night on the show. which meant he had to do his always unpredictable stefan character one last time. stefan though left meyers. he went off with another famous newscaster. he went off with anderson cooper. that prompted of course one of the funniest nights on "snl." a pretty funny sendoff for bill hader. >> ben affleck joined the five-time appearance club or whatever they call it.
