road, very light volume as you continue on to new york avenue. i'm back in ten minutes and then i'll give you your rails. new this morning, one of the largest subway systems is at a standstill after a fire in the middle of rush hour. russian investigators say a power cable innighted in a tunnel near the red square area this morning, forcing 5,000 people to evacuate. one of the subway's main lines is still closed. the subway system carries up to 7 million people every day. it's considered one of the most reliable in the world. also new this morning, a gaithersburg family out of their home after a fire overnight. officials say it happened about 11:00 in an apartment. they encountered heavy smoke inside. no injuries reported. investigators believe that fire may have started in a dryer. later today friends and family will hold a candlelight

vigil for the arlington high school student killed in a skateboarding stunt. 18-year-old john malvar was doing a stunt called skiching. that's when you hold onto the side of a car while riding your skateboa skateboard. he was on his skateboard while a 17-year-old friend drove a pickup drove. they were on highland street when malvar fell, hit his head on the pavement. charges are pending on the 17-year-old driver. >> we have two losses. one is gone and the other is about to have his life ruined. >> he would have graduated from washington-lehigh school later this morning. we were told he was going to pursue a nursing degree at vcu in the fall. 5:03 right now. this morning you'll have a chance to voice your concerns about taxi safety here in d.c. councilwoman mary shea hosting the meeting after 150

complaints. today's meeting starts at 11 a.m. at the wilson building. that hearing comes on the heels of a taxi driver's murder. 57-year-old solomon okohor was shot and killed in d.c.'s adams morgan neighborhood. other cab drivers who knew okohor say his death just proves driving a taxi is dangerous business. >> nobody should die like this. it's bad. people don't understand, us taxi drivers, you know, it's a real danger. it's business. but we have families to feed. >> d.c. police have arrested two suspects in this case, ercell overton charged with murder and joshua king was also taken into custody on unrelated probation violations. friends and family will say a final farewell to new jersey senator frank lauten burg. joe biden and hillary clinton

will attend his funeral at synagogue in new york. they are among those who will deliver eulogies today. the late senator's casket will head to the u.s. capitol where it will lie in repose tomorrow. he'll be buried at arlington national cemetery friday. new jersey governor chris christie says he want a special election in october to fill lautenberg's senate seat. he says the dates in the state statute don't permit the special election to happen during the general election in november. >> the only option i is to do it in 2014 or special election in 2013. >> it cost the state of new jersey about $12 million to hold an election. new this morning, we're seeing how much of a hit the irs is taking in americans' eyes in

the wake of the latest scandal. nbc news/wall street journal asked 1,000 people how confident are you in the irs? just 10% of them have a lot of confidence. 45% have some. 43% have little to no confidence in that agency. let's talk about the military now. they're also getting mixed reviews as it tries to crack down on sex assaults among service members. 67% of people surveyed have a lot of confidence in the military. that's actually down from 76% last year. 27% have some confidence. 5% have little or no confidence. another member of president obama's cabinet is coming under scrutiny this morning. this time it's health and human services secretary kathleen sebelius. she's denying she asked for health care programs to help implement. it would be illegal for her to ask for money because her agency regulates them. virginia governor bob mcdonald has not commented on the latest controversy surrounding his relationship

with a wealthy campaign donor. "the washington post" is reporting he attended a luncheon at executive mansion in 2011 to promote a new dietary supplement. star scientific's chief executive has donated more than $100,000 to mcdonald's campaigns. the fbi is investigating his relationship with the governor's family. it is now 5:06. ignoring hecklers wasn't enough. how the first lady responded to a group who tried to interrupt her on stage. plus, the push to change a policy as a 10-year-old girl waits for a lung transplant. here's tom. >> low humidity, afternoon

today an american soldier will plead guilty to one of the most serious war crimes in decades. robert bails admits he we want on a deadly rampage in afghanistan in march of last year. the military says he killed 16

afghanistans in two villages. most of the victims were women and children. he'll avoid the death penalty by entering the guilty plea. he'll be sentenced to life in prison but he may be eligible for parole at some point. today is the second day of jury selection against gangster james "whitey" bulger. lawyers hope to narrow the number down significantly by tomorrow. the judge hopes the jury will be in place by friday. unlike other organized crime cases, these jurors will not be sequestered but their names will be kept secret until the end of the trial. he faces a laundry list, including murder of 19 people. that trial expected to start next monday. 5:16 now. thousands are expected to attend a public memorial service for four houston firefighters killed in the line of duty. it will happen at reliant stadium following a procession through houston. the firefighters died while battling a fire at a hotel last

friday. part of the building collapsed, killing them and injuring more than a dozen others. the secretary of health and human services kathleen sebelius says she will not intervene in a lung transport case for a dying 10-year-old girl. sarah has been in the hospital for three months now with cystic fibrosis. she needs a lung transplant to survive 37 under the current policy children under 12 are not eligible for adult lungs. the girl's family wants that policy changed. during a congressional hearing sebelius says the rules are in place for a reason. >> i would suggest that the rules that are in place and reviewed on a regular basis are there because the worst of all worlds, in my mind s to have some individual pick and choose who lives and who dies. >> the family says the change would add about 20 children to the adult waiting list. a rare show of bipartisanship is providing funding for veterans into 2014.

a live look at the capitol where the house passed their first spending bill. the measure provides funding for military construction and veterans affairs and is meant to help clear a backlog of health claims that have kept hundreds of thousands of veterans waiting. the president is threatening to veto any new spending bill that isn't part of a larger plan to addressee quester cuts. republicans are assuming the cuts will stay in place. republicans in the house are, working to keep guantanamo bay detention center open. they voted to uphold a current law that blocks taxpayer funding being used to renovate prisons in the u.s. to hold suspected terrorist. it's the first vote on guantanamo's future since president obama said he was still committed to closing the facility a month ago. we're learning more about a heckler who interrupted the first lady at a private fund-raiser. michelle obama was speaking to 200 supporters about gay rights when a protester interrupted.

demanding the president issue mandate. the first lady reportedly told the woman she could listen or take the mike and then threatened to leave. the others attending that event encouraged her to stay. the white house is not commenting on the incident. in news 4 your health, drugs used to treat early stages of alzheimer's may lower the risk of having a heart attack or dying at all. swedish researchers studied more than 7,000 with alzheimer's disease. they found those taking drugs were a third less likely to die from any cause compared to people not taking the drugs. they also had nearly 40% reduced risk for a heart attack. researchers say more tests need to be done. doctors in utah are celebrating a first. a successful heart and liver transplant in the same patient during one operation. michael mater received a new heart and liver on april 23rd. it took doctors nearly three years to plan this surgery.

>> to do two complicated procedures and try to put them together into one large complicated procedure, i can't tell you the amount of hours that went into the planning of this. >> he was born with a rare liver disease that led to heart problems. he suffered at least 16 heart attacks in the past nine years. right now hundreds of people are out of their homes because a fast-moving wildfire in new mexico. health officials issued an advisory for people living in the northern part of that state because of this. see all that thick smoke there? it's affecting the air quality. the thompson ridge fire has already scorched 4400 acres in santa fe national forest. only 5% contained. set veer weather that swept through oklahoma killed 19 people. friday's storms created the widest storm ever. they say the twister in el reno was 2.6 miles wide. the winds topped 295 miles an hour, making it an ef-5 tornado, the highest rating.

hitting our country and have police baffled. police say this thief has a small device in his hand, ames it at the car and pops all of the electronic locks without any alarms going off. police say the biggest problem, they have no idea what this high-tech gadget is. >> we've reached out to car manufacturers, the manufacturers of vehicle alarm systems. so far nobody seems to know what this technology is. >> that says a lot about how sophisticated these criminals are. >> when you look at the video and you see how easy it is, it's pretty unnerving. >> you can see jeff rossen's full investigation and some ideas on how to protect yourself on "today" right here on nbc4. you've probably seen a gargoyle on the side of a building but this one in arizona, nine feet tall, scary thing here. that's not why some folks want him taken down, though.

doing a stunt called skiching. we'll have more on the stories throughout the morning. first, good morning to you. >> good morning. welcome back to "news 4 today today" on june 5th. we start with a live look outside, or a look at our forecast with tom kierein. >> good morning. we can do that, too. temperature as you head out the door are chilly. you'll need a jacket. we're about 12 minutes away from sunrise on this june morning. we're down just into low 50s in prince george's county. it's generally in the mid-50s in montgomery county. district of columbia near 60. near the bay it is near 60. the rest of southern maryland, eastern shore. right now out in the mountains, many locations near 50 degrees, including shenandoah valley and areas along the pennsylvania border. quite a chilly start this morning. here's how your wednesday is looking hour by hour. by noontime we should be into the mid-70s and we'll have some clouds coming and going.

numbers. >> good morning. he's taking a hit with independents but not overall. his approval and favorability numbers holding steady according to the new nbc/wall street journal poll that came out overnight. the administering, that's a different issue. these numbers don't seem to stick to the president but take a look at the irs scandal, for example. 55% of those polled say they question the honesty and integrity of the administration as a result of the irs targeting conservatives. 43% think it's not an isolated incident involving just a few employees. only 10% now say they're confident in the irs, yet 33%, only a third, personally blame president obama. the poll also takes a look at the military with a number of recent incidents, allegations and in some cases arrests involving sexual abuse. the military still holds the confidence of two-thirds of americans, but that's down nine

points since last year. we're looking into that poll today. lots of interesting numbers as we take a look at the effect of these scandals on the administration and on the president. >> tracie potts live on capitol hill for us. thank you. 5:33. news4's richard jordan is at the live desk. >> this morning pakistan has a new prime minister and he's calling for an end to american drove strikes. th nawaz sharif just made that in his speech. sharif has served as prime minister twice before. he was forced out in a military coup in 1999. at the live desk, i'm richard jordan. today virginia governor bob mcdonald set to sign legislation to improve school safety in the commonwealth. that happens this afternoon just outside richmond. the new law allows the hiring of

more school resource officers, provides grants for security equipment and establishes threat assessment teams. the general assembly past the task force's recommendations. democrats and college students will rally outside the capitol, protesting upcoming student loans hikes. right now rate is set to double to 6.8% on july 1st if congress doesn't take action. last month the republican-led house passed a bill that would let the interest rates vary annually but the white house has promised to veto that measure. the race for governor of maryland will heat up a bit today. ron george will announce he's running today. he will be the second republican to enter the race this week. harford county leader announced

avenue on bryant street in northwest and then took off with cell phones there. this happened last month. if you recognize these guys, call d.c. police. 5:45 right now. this morning a d.c. man being held without bond charged with a series of high-end robberies. prosecutors say 33-year-old walter douglas is connected to as many as 14 robberies. they say he was a part of a group that robbed high-end stores in the middle of the day, just like the cartier store in chevy chase. police say they caught the man who raped a woman in silver spring last month. officers arrested dennis carpeter yesterday. they say he attacked a postal worker behind a post office in university boulevard in the middle of the afternoon. montgomery county police say he forced her into a backyard and assaulted her. detectives say they used dna to link him to the crime scene. montgomery county police need your help to find this match who caught himself in the act. investigators say this man broke into a home off natelli woods

toward more popular routes. there will be another public hearing tomorrow in gaithersburg. you may see more inspections like this one on your way to work this morning. police are checking more than 1 million trucks and buses on highways across north america this week. they want to make sure the vehicles are running safely and drivers aren't too tired. large trucks were involved in more than 3200 crashes nationwide. two professional teams are coming to northern virginia. community leaders held a ground-breaking ceremony for edelman financial field in ashburn. the virginia cavalry fc soccer team and the loudoun hounds, independent league baseball team, will play in a new ul multisport stadium. >> there's so many kids, being in the fastest growing county here, that i want kids to know what i got to experience when i walked into yankee stadium for the first time.

>> the new 5500 seat stadium opens next may. it's part of a bigger development called one loudoun. let's check in with richard jordan about the russian fire in a subway. >> it's made a mess out of moscow's metro system. first, there was reportedly a fire in a tunnel. that led to a complete shutdown of the metro system and forced thousands of people to get out of the metro and try to walk to work. eventually, the metro system was reopened. then about half an hour later there was another scorched cable found in another tunnel which forced a partial shutdown. so, it's been a mess on moscow's metro today. already 45 people have needed medical attention. seven people are hospitalized. many of them suffering from smoke inhalation. but the largest impact has been the thousands who were evacuated from the metro system and then had to crawl out from underground, go above and try to find another way to get to work

this morning. we'll be watching this one at the live desk. >> we'll see you soon. a fredericksburg fisherman could soon hold the new world record for reeling in the biggest northern snakehead fish. caleb newton was fishing in a quiet creek in weekend with his best friend when he felt a strong tug. turns out it was a northern snakehead fish weighing in at 17.6 pounds. yuck. at first newton didn't think the catch was anything special. it almost went on someone's dinner table. >> when it went to the bushing block, before the knife went into it, i gave him a call and said, hey, please put it back on ice. we need to get this thing down and weighed because there's a possibility we got a current world record on our hands. >> japan currently holds the record at 17.4 pounds set in 2004. in newton's catch is approved by the international game fish association, the record will be his. not a pretty fish. >> that's why i don't eat fish.

oh, gosh, that's an ugly thing. new this morning, d.c. getting high marks for its parks. the trust for public lands park source index ranks the district sixth among the 50 largest u.s. cities. they rate the city park system on zero to five park benches. we earned four park benches for being accessible. we didn't get the fifth bench because of low scores on park sizes and because of a lack of playgrounds. minneapolis took the top spot, new york in second place, boston, sacramento and san francisco tied for third. cooler attempts can affect mosquitos and the ability to fight off infectious diseases that can be passed on to humans. they found mosquito eggs hatched in cooler temperatures, they found they carry more diseases. that warmer weather last week, i've seen the mosquitos, they're out and biting. 5:51 right now.

tom kierein is here. we're going to see if we see more of that warmer weather today. >> we want another yesterday. there's that sunrise behind us. absolutely gorgeous start to this wednesday but a chill in the air. there's the view from space. and we just have a few high clouds drifting over the region now. and the temperatures are only in the 50s to just near 50 degrees throughout much of the region. here is your temperature scale. there is the time scale, so lots of sun this morning. a few high clouds. we'll stay in the upper 50s and low 60s through about 8:00. by 9:00 into the upper 60s. by noontime, mid-70s. then we had to make it up to around 80 degrees and a partly cloudy sky. by midnight down into the 60s. storm team 4 four-day forecast, more humidity around. more clouds on thursday. highs reaching mid and upper 70s. thursday night, might get some showers. off and on showers on friday.

maybe an afternoon shower, high around 80. as we get toward late friday night, maybe some lingering showers. now, saturday morning through midday saturday, might get a passing shower. otherwise saturday's looking mostly dry with a little sun back in the afternoon. highs reaching the mid-80s. not too humid. lower humidity on sunday, too, but should be warming up into the mid to upper 80s. a small chance of an isolated shower sunday afternoon and evening as well as on monday. seven-day outlook showing that. then into tuesday, we'll dry out, sunshine into the 80s and feeling like summertime. i visited this school in prince george's county a couple weeks ago. the lewisdale elementary school. a shout out to all the students. we had a terrific time. i want to thank teacher colleen bank for the invitation to visit the lewisdale elementary school. they had just had their spring concert there and had a wonderful time, a terrific school there in prince george's county. and i'm back in ten minutes with another update and a hometown forecast. here's a look at traffic with danella. good morning.

>> good morning. i have some good news if you're traveling along 210 this morning. at livingston, clear. nothing in the roadway along 210. i-95 in virginia, different story. north bound at garrisonville road, crash in the center lane. here's what's happening. your delay northbound is about three miles, but chopper 4 is en route right now and hopefully in about ten minutes i can come back with a live look from chopper 4 and we can get an update on the delays there. over to the dulles toll road, in either direction as you head eastbound and westbound, drive time from 28 as you make your way to the beltway, only a 15-minute drive. westbound clear as well. i'm back in ten minutes with an update on the crash along i-95 in virginia. heads up now for toyota owners. the company recalling more than 80,000 priuses in the u.s. because of the brakes. they were built between march and october of 2009.

toyota recalling lexus hs 250h vehicles made between june and october of that year. toyota says it does not know of any accidents caused by this defect. chrysler is refusing the government's request to recall almost 3 million suvs. the national highway traffic administration asked the company to recall older model jeep grand cherokees and liberties. it's worried about the gas tacks. the agency is concerned the tank could leak gas and catch fire if they're rear-ended. chrysler claims they are safe and says the government didn't have all the data when they requested that recall. a battle between the biggest names in pizza can only benefit you, the consumer. courtney reagan is live with that story and more for your money. good morning. >> good morning to you. hope you're hungry because pizza price wars is on. pizza is offering limited time one topping pizza for $5.55. only applies to carry-out

orders. fast food experts say the drive between companies. amazon is reportedly planning a major roll-out of online grocery business beyond hometown of seattle. it's been developing amazon fresh for at least five years. they could launch the service in los angeles this week and san francisco later this year. if that goes well, amazon fresh could be expanded to 20 other large urban areas in 2014. >> courtney, i'm not surprised. you can get anything on amazon. >> i know, anything. >> i'm always up pore pizza, too. thanks, courtney. soon, you might not see the iphone 4 or ipad 2 on store shelves. the international trade commission is banning the import of those popular devices that were specifically designed for at&t's wireless network. the panel says they violate a patent held by rival samsung. both tech companies are in the middle of a world wild legal battle over patents. apple says they will appeal that
