an historic landmark business in the district gone up in flames. >> what can i say? i mean, i don't know how to say anything other than i really feel sorry for the neighborhood. i wish we -- i wish i could say it's going to come back. >> hundreds of firefighters work to contain the blaze. >> you could see the thick, black smoke for miles. >> it even provided a backdrop at nat's park. >> tonight we have coverage of a four alarm fire as the community has lost a landmark. >> we start with firefighters

still on the scene. the fire at frager's hardware store started around 6:30 tonight. more than 200 firefighters rushed to help. two firefighters suffered minor injuries. everybody in the store got out safely though. shomari stone starts our team coverage tonight. >> reporter: right now the fire is contained. but firefighters are monitoring the hot spots. as you can see behind me, there is still smoke coming out of this building. tonight two firefighters were hurt out here with minor injuries. between 8th and 13th street is blocked. a lot of folks out here tell me this is sad for them to see. >> it's the heart of the neighborhood. >> reporter: joanne hatfield's heart rages as the flames go on capitol hill. >> all the neighbors would see each other and they have the

most unique items that aren't carried at any other hardware store. >> reporter: people stand around and watch shocked as this historic store that opened in 1920 goes up in flames. >> everybody's sad. this is the best store. i mean, it was so personable. >> reporter: right now we're bringing you across the street. you can see the black smoke, orange flames building out of the buildings. there are chemicals inside this building. propane tanks that makes this fire that much more difficult to put out. >> it is the biggest challenge of putting it out. >> the biggest challenge this is a large building with a lot of things in it that provides access problems. that's what we're doing. that's why we're taking a cautious approach. >> reporter: a hazmat team monitors the air. tonight officials say the smoke is not toxic. more than 200 firefighters, 50 fire engines are battling this four alarm fire. four buildings burned as the orange glow burst through windows. >> what's going through your

mind right now? >> man, i can't explain it. it's almost like an icon in this neighborhood. >> reporter: an icon that capitol hill community will miss. >> it's a heart breaker to see it go. >> reporter: now, a lot of folks i talk to out here come up and ask do you know how this fire started? fire officials tell me the cause is still under investigation. live in southeast d.c., i'm shomari stone, news4. >> thanks. one of the owners of that store talked to us about how that fire started and the quick reaction from one of the employees. mark sea graves joins us now. >> somebody said there's a fire. then from that little panic and everybody got out. >> reporter: ed copenhager is co-owner. he says once the fire got started, employees acted fast. >> my partner tried to run in and put the fire out with the fire extinguisher. but he couldn't get through the door.

>> reporter: but he says one employee's actions were nothing short of heroic. >> one of our boys was smart enough to walk into the basement, walk through to make sure everybody was out before he left the building. >> reporter: for those who have never been inside, the building is a maze from the basement to the top floor. it would have been easy for someone to get lost in the panic. but that employee went aisle by aisle to be sure he was the last man out. >> got to give the guy credit. >> reporter: they plea about 60 people. many have been at the store for years. >> most are shell shocked right now. >> reporter: as for the future of the hardware store -- >> what can i say? i don't know how to say anything. i feel sorry. i wish i could say it's going to come back. but from the looks of it right now, you don't feel like there's going to be anything left when that fire's out. >> reporter: he's thankful

tomorrow morning on our broadcast news4 beginning at 4:30. >> this is the third major fire on capitol hill in six years. april 2007 an early morning fire destroyed the hall at eastern market. the rebuilt food hall reopened two years later. then tune inn burned in june of 2011. fire officials say that started in the kitchen. that business opened again after a few months of repairs. tonight first tropical storm of the season has formed in the gulf of mexico. it's named andrea. swimmers already feeling effects. there were pictures on dolphin island as ten swimmers were rescued this afternoon. life guards jumped into the water to help the teenage girls who were out there. some bystanders even grabbed what they could to help out. we're wondering how the storm might effect our weather. doug can tell us that. >> i think it is going to affect

us. but also tomorrow. we're going to have some shower activity. andrea making her presence felt. tropical storm warnings for portions of the sunshine state right now. but no sunshine there. plenty of rain across the area as the storm makes its way to the north. currently winds at 40 miles an hour moving to the north at about 6 miles an hour. that's not fast, but it is going to pick up speed quickly. it'll be right on top of us around norfolk around 7:00 on friday evening. as a tropical storm very close to our region. this is going to bring us a lot of rain. could bring us a bit of wind. i'll show you what it does for our region coming up in a minute. now at 11:00, a major traffic backup on i-270 in germantown tonight. chopper 4 saw several cars rolled over. both take ton the hospital are

expected to survive. expect lingering delays. now to a news4 exclusive tonight. the mother of a murdered college student is reacting to news of an arrest. olu williams was shot to death on his way home in deanwood back in march. he was killed in what police believe was a robbery attempt. he was 31 years old. deandre shaheed, an 18-year-old is charged with his murder. >> i'm still hurting because no matter what, it's not going to bring him back. they took something that is irreplaceable. that no one has a right to do. >> williams' mother accepted his diploma from catholic university on his behalf last month. tonight a d.c. community is in mourning over the death of a 16-year-old who was murdered in an apartment building. his name is malik spersk. police are still trying to find whoever it is that killed him. he was shot in northeast d.c. on

monday night. officers nearby heard the shots. they rushed to help. he died at the hospital several hours later. he was a student and a basketball player at the kingsbury center school. ♪ it won't be long ♪ i'm going to need somebody to lean on ♪ hundreds came out for a candle light vigil tonight in memory of a teenager killed in a skate boarding accident in arlington this week. 18-year-old john malvar died yesterday during a skate boarding stunt. northern virginia bureau reporter is live at washington lee high school where the vigil has just wrapped up. david? >> reporter: you think about it. this is the time of year that students are supposed to be most excited about summer break. just two weeks away. for seniors here at washington lee, graduation just as close. yet all of that joy replaced tonight by a somber vigil. the black smoke from tonight's

southeast fire looming over students as they gathered here at washington lee high school. they, too, wore black. posters carried malvar's pictures through the years. in front of the podium, a reminder of what he loved and what ultimately took his life. police say the teen was killed during a skate boarding stunt. in less than 24 hours, other students organized tonight's vigil. >> he would have been so amazed to see how the students could transcend their normal groups, cliques, and environments to unite for one cause. >> he just had a lot of integrity. he was always genuine and honest. great kid to have around. >> reporter: malvar was at practice every day and a teacher told me he had perfect attendance. many took to the mic to share memories. >> i used to call john big john. and it wasn't because of his

has been charged in connection with a prank that put his friend in the hospital. police say 22-year-old patrick stapleton shot his friend in the butt. early this morning while the man was sleeping. they were both inside a friend's house at the time. stapleton told officers he thought the handgun that he had used was a bb gun. the victim is recovering now at prince georges hospital center. new details as crews pull victims out of the rubble of a building collapse. we'll have the new developments. the tsa has changed its mind on what you can take on board a plane. plus we'll hear from a woman who let a

it has now been determined that six people were killed in that building collapse in philadelphia today. crews found five more bodies this evening after an all-day search through the rubble. a 35-year-old woman was found dead earlier in the day. at least 13 others were injured when that four-story building came tumbling down onto a salvation army store next door this morning. fire officials say that building that collapsed was in the process of being demolished. air travelers won't be able to take pocket knives on board this summer. decided to drop a plan to allow small knives on board flights. the change was supposed to take effect in days. the tsa says abandoning the new policy will allow the agency to focus on other priorities.

today an 84-year-old woman claimed that $590 million power ball jackpot. and tonight you'll hear from the woman who allowed the lucky winner to cut the line in front of her. the winner's name is gloria mackenzie. she chose the lump sum. she did not speak to the media, but the woman who might have won the largest power ball jackpot in history did talk today. her name is mindy crandall. and she might have been the winner. >> i turned around and there was a lady kind of standing there that had gotten in. she looked at me when the lady said next. i said go ahead. it's not a big deal. >> actually, it was. crandall says she's okay with the way things turned out. she says for her it's more important to be polite than it is to be rich. >> good for her. >> yeah. >> what other kind of attitude would you take after that? that's the way you have to look at it.

way it's supposed to be. >> we're getting a bad attitude about this approaching stormy weather. >> we have to remember how nice today was. and yesterday. >> i'm not going to remember that on friday. >> no, no. we've got a lot of rain coming. here's the good part. we have a tropical storm coming but we're not going to feel the tropical storm effects other than the rain. maybe a bit of wind. but if you have plans friday, friday night. you might want to rethink those. radar right now not showing anything going on across our region. we just took a look at the airport. calm once again as we move towards southern florida. we're watching this system make its way to the north. crawling at about 6 miles an hour. it is named andrea and it's bringing a ton of rain. now a fairly significant tornado threat in through portions of south florida. one tornado warning down into the keys. expecting to see many of those into portions of southern florida as this moves to the north. as it continues to move to the north, this is where it's going to be over the next 24 to 48

hours. just off the florida coastline right around the pensacola area. about 45 mile-an-hour winds. that's a fairly weak tropical storm. that's not the big concern. the rain is the big concern. upwards of 5, maybe 10 inches in florida. for us it's just down to our south and east during the day on friday. quickly becoming a tropical depression as it makes its way out to sea. we'll be on the west side of this. that's good news here. that means the strongest winds will stay off to the east side. we're not going to see the strongest winds for that. the biggest threat for us as i continue to mention will be the rainfall that makes its way in here during the day on friday. tomorrow's going to be fairly wet too. that's going to help to facilitate that storm to move to the north. that will bring rain in by 6:00 tomorrow afternoon. look at this. just about everybody seeing a chance for showers. maybe some thunderstorms tomorrow. some of those storms could have locally heavy down pours. one system moves out. but by friday morning, this is

where andrea starts to set in. this is the tropical moisture. everybody getting at least some rain. some of that rain will be heavier than others. and any of that will have the potential to be very heavy at times. especially later in the afternoon. this band around the corridor. then another band forming into southern maryland also including d.c. around 6:00. so a very wet period during the day on friday. here's the best news of all. by 11:00, take a look. it's almost out of here. this is what you can expect from this storm. heavy rain, 1 to 2 inches. windy but not too bad. 20 to 30 mile-an-hour winds. maybe. moves out by saturday. that i think even better news as we make our way through. current temperatures sitting at 70 degrees. doreen, this is when we're talking about things looking nice right now. >> uh-huh. >> close your eyes. 82 on friday. but then 84 on saturday as that storm system moves out of here. i think saturday is going to be okay. can't rule out a stray shower, but the showers do move back in
