"early today" starts right now. >> announcer: this is "early today" for thursday, june 6th. good morning, i'm mara schiavocampo. we start with breaking news out of philadelphia. a dramatic rescue overnight. rescuers pulled a 61-year-old woman from the rubble a collapsed building. 13 hours after it came crashing down. six people were killed in that collapse. >> we pray that those who

survived will recover not only physically but certainly mentally from the trauma of being in a building and it suddenly collapses. >> workers using buckets and bare hands to remove bricks rescued 14 people. six are in the hospital with one in critical condition. >> we have seen superficial lacerations, bruises, contusions. >> the collapsed building had been undergoing demolition. witnesses described two loud explosions right before the collapse. >> some people were panicking, really shaken real bad. >> none were able to walk. they were bruised, maybe some broken bones. >> many of the victims were in the salvation army thrift store next door when that building came crashing through. officials say the demolition company did have proper permits.

an investigation is under way. news this morning of yet another classified government program, this time private citizens among the targets. the guardian newspaper reports the nsa is collecting calls from private calls. the secret foreign intelligence granted the orders to the feds back in april but limited the time period to three months. in the ruling obtained by the guardian a judge direct as subsidiary of verizon communications to turn call lotion 0 over to the government. it applies domestically as well as calls taking place between u.s. and foreign nationals. the collection of communication lotion is believed to be a major component of the bush administration's program of surveillance that took place without court orders. it comes as the obama

administration is coming under attacks over government leaks. the white house has not commented. now to immigration reform. bipartisan legislation is expected to hit the senate floor next week. a new nbc news "wall street journal" poll finds a slight majority supports it but not right now. all this is one of the gang of eight steps down. >> reporter: interesting numbers coming out of that poll because while it shows public support we're learning this bill may be in jeopardy. let's look at the numbers. nbc's "wall street journal" poll also showing 52% support among the public for a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants in this country but when people are told over hoops they have to jump through to get citizenship, paying back taxes and fines and passing a background check that support jumps to 65% including

58% of republicans. but whether or not it's going to get done now seems to be something that the american public isn't quite sure of. 47% say they would be upset if it didn't get done in this congress and equal amount just under half say they would not be, in fact now we're hearing from senator marco rubio, he was part of the gang of eight senators who helped craft a bill that will be discussed next week, he now says he's not sure it can get through the senate and definitely not through the house in its current form. they need to beef up border patrol and border security. rubio says. also this morning as you noted we're learning that congressman raul labrador decided to leaf the house group working on compromise there saying it can passing some form but he's pitching his own plan. right now he says they are hung up over language on health care.

a little girl in desperate need of a lung transplant has new hope this morning. you can see this 10-year-old celebrating in her hospital room and she certainly has reason to. on wednesday a federal judge temporarily granted her family's request to give her an opportunity to apply for a space on transplant list. current rules allow only patients 12 and older to receive lungs from adult donors. the biggest single lottery winner in u.s. history is finally revealed. 84-year-old gloria mackenzie claimed her lump sum on wednesday flanked by her lawyers and a financial adviser. she released a statement said she bought her lottery ticket after a kind person let her go ahead. she lives in a duplex her

neighbors don't think she will be there much longer. the first storm of the atlantic hurricane season tropical storm andrea is headed towards the north florida coast bringing heavy rains and gusty winds. meteorologist bill karins is here with the rest of the forecast. what can we expect from andrea. >> it's raining on everyone. andrea will be a big rain producer. the storm itself is not that strong. considering the last storm we dealt with was sandy. it's bringing a lot of rain and threat of isolated tornadoes from tampa southward towards the florida peninsula. on satellite this is how it looks on radar. you see the bands on the east side of the storm moving up through florida. we had a couple of tornado warnings over the last hour or two but no confirmed tornadoes. that's the threat today. mostly tornadoes. some rip current problems too. yesterday in the coastline, northern portions of the gulf

near mobile they had 12 rescues near dolphin island. dangerous conditions out there to be at the beach, especially on the periphery of the storm, especially north gulf and rip current there's on the east coast from the beaches of north carolina southward during the day also. as far as the forecast of the storm it's a fast mover, not going to get any stronger. drench the southeast today. up through friday it drenches the mid-atlantic friday night and new england and most of it will be gone by the heart of the weekend. this storm a wake up call that hurricane season is here. that yo that's a look at your national forecast. now here's a look at the weather outside your window. besides the rain we have associated with andrew we have thunderstorms ongoing near the dallas-ft. worth area and we're going to see a cold almost chilly type spring rain from chicago into the ohio valley. once again the bottom line with andrea, most likely more of a my

scrutiny from lawmakers after news broke that the doj obtained phone records of the associated press. leon panetta is being accused of leaking sensitive information surrounding the osama bin laden raid. a report says panetta disclosed the name of the raid leader during a 2011 meeting with hollywood writers for the film ""zero dark thirty"." plan b contraceptives could be available over-the-counter and to anyone who wants. connecticut's governor signed legislation wednesday banning the public release of crime scene photos from the newtown shooting. the law also seals video evidence from inside sandy hook elementary. former president bill clinton was among the dig any tears attending a memorial service for immediate gar evers. president obama met with his widow earlier this week. evers was killed 50 years ago in

questions about whether the u.s. always knows who drone strikes are actually killing. nbc news chief foreign correspondent richard engel. >> reporter: nbc news examined documents on drone attacks in 2010 and 2011. location, death tolls, terrorist affiliations but they reveal what u.s. officials don't know like how many killed. between seven and ten in one strike, 20 to 22 in another. u.s. officials do seem certain they almost never kill civilians. in those 114 strikes, only one acknowledged civilian casualty. >> they want to maintain the myth that civilians are not harmed which is simply implausible. >> reporter: about a quarter of those killed are described generically as quote other militants. it suggest u.s. officials don't always know exactly how many or who they are killing.

. welcome back. tropical storm andrea is far out here in the gulf. the feeder band is going up the peninsula. we have had a couple of tornado warnings. no reports of any damage. that's the concern as we go throughout the morning hours. all day long for the most part and even this afternoon. all that moisture comes up later today into georgia and south carolina. flash flooding to deal with but not a lot of damage from winds or anything like that. time now for entertainment. michael jackson's 15-year-old daughter paris was rushed to the hospital early yesterday morning for what was possibly an intentional overdose. the jackson family rep says paris is physically fine and that the family just wants some privacy. >> the "new york post" reports skier lindsay vaughn was given an impromptu drug test while she was at the cfda awards monday night.

guards escorted her to the restroom to provide her sample but the test was not a big deal for the skier. carrie underwood and maria lambert were quoting about the back stage beauty routine. it's breast pump parts. and she skipped out of a $14,000 tab to benefit underprivileged children. she racked up $1500 in food and drinks and left without paying a cent. tom thanks tweeted this, asking cast and crew helping him to rest his voice so the understudy done have to take over. and rebel wilson tweeted her

landmark frager's hardware. >> the impact of the devastating flames could last into your commute. pennsylvania avenue is back open inbound but some streets are still closed as crews pick up those pieces. we'll have more on that fire on capitol hill in just a moment. first, your forecast. >> we'll start out the day with more mild weather but we'll start to see some big changes. >> storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein is here with your first check on the forecast. good morning, tom. >> good morning. that's a live view of the washington monument here in washington. a cloudy sky. here's the view from space. a lot of cloudiness over us now. on the left of your screen this is an area of light rain out of the mountains. a few sprinkles from harrisonburg toward west of charlottesville and right around our region just cloud cover and temperatures on the milder side compared to yesterday morning it was only near 50. right now in the low 60s in

nearby suburbs to mid 60s in washington. it's looking like we could get rain later today. i'll tell you when coming up in a couple minutes. how's traffic? >> yesterday's fire still closing down outbound pennsylvania avenue at 8th street. you can see police still on the scene and they have the road blocked off here so just be aware of that as you make your commute this morning. i'm also watching an accident. this one is eastbound university boulevard at dennis avenue. you will watch this car turn off onto dennis avenue because of the crash there. i did see one of the tow trucks tow a car out of the roadway. i'll give you an update at 4:31. >> thank you. we want to give you the latest developments out of southeast right now where firefighters have been on the scene of that massive fire all night. and now we're watching for flare-ups. news4's megan mcgrath joins us live from capitol hill with more. >> reporter: within the last few minutes they reopened pennsylvania avenue in the inbound direction so headed

west. that's good news for commuters this morning. there were concerns that perhaps it would be closed during rush hour but they reopened it. the outbound lanes still closed as well as a number of other streets in the area so that is going to be an issue during rush hour. you can see that there's still quite a presence here on the scene. all of the fire trucks. they just stopped putting water on what is left of the building here because they had all kinds of flare-ups. this video shot during the height of the fire here and you can see just how intense it was. went to 200 firefighters here on the scene before it was all over. this building absolutely gutted. not anything really salvageable inside. this hardware store was jam packed, full of merchandise. a lot of combustibles. they had paint in there. shelves going from floor to ceiling. lots of stuff jam packed in there. once it caught on fire, it was

very, very difficult to put out. now, folks are still here on the scene. the fire crews still on the scene keeping an eye on things. we're not seeing any smoke at this point. not seeing any flames or flare-ups but they've had issues overnight. things have flared up here and there and they had to hit it with some water. they'll be here for a while to keep an eye on things and make sure there's no additional problems. in terms of what caused the blaze, all of that still under investigation. reporting live in southeast, megan mcgrath, news4. back to you in the studio. >> thank you. >> we're also hearing the dispatch calls for the first time this morning and they paint a really good picture of what firefighters experienced battling that intense fire. >> all units. all units respond to flagler's. the building is jammed. be careful going in. all units on the fire
