that four-story building was about to be demolished on wednesday. six people died. a woman who works next door to the building is suing the owner and the demolition contractor for criminal negligence. she was one of the first rescued. the city now inspecting hundreds of demolition sites to check safety standards. they found violations at two sites. connecticut is setting aside $50 million to help build a new school at the site of the sandy hook shootings. state lawmakers attached a bill on the final day of the

area, andrea. over south carolina turning northward. major cause for concern not only because of heavy rains but tornado warnings. the storm is expected to spend the day heading up the coast. people in north carolina are bracing for andrea now. the weather channel's dave malkoff has more. what's it look like where you are, dave? >> reporter: good morning. take a look. it is very windy and you can hear the storm rolling in with the waves crashing here. the wind is chopping up the waves back there. that's all we're seeing now. although earlier this morning, as you said, tornado warnings just north of here near the outer banks. that is pretty scary. if you are a family and you are here for vacation, and now that you get those alerts over your cell phone and you hear that cry of the ems alert on your cell phone in the middle of the night, this was at about 4:00 a.m., and that's what some people were waking up to this

morning. but those candidate warning have passed. we did see a little damage up north of here in the inland areas near the outer banks, but that's all the damage that we've seen so far. but later on today as the storm moves flew and it s through andt a good clip, around 30 miles an hour we're going to see thunderstorms and a lot of rain. that's what they're looking for. think of this. we are at the very beginning of what could be a very active hurricane season here. so this is a very slow start as we get into this, this one tracking up through florida, and now here into north carolina by the end of the weekend it will be out of here and somewhere in the atlantic. back to you. >> so people there vacationing or just staying put and riding out the storm, i guess? >> reporter: yeah. that's pretty much what they're going to do here. it's not going to be a major, major hurricane, like we saw 17

years ago here on wrightsville beach that completely destroyed one of the popular piers. this is just going to be a thunderstorm that rolls through, but still with the tornado warnings, it can get scary. >> right. dave malkoff in wrightsville beach, thank you. an idea exactly what you need to plan for. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein is here. >> here in the weather center east where dave is located out in the atlantic is a buoy that reported winds 15 miles an hour. the main threat is heavy rain. looking now at storm team 4 radar we have light to moderate rain now beginning to move into the metro area from the south. this is the first from tropical storm andrea moving in. one band of moderate rain, calvert county, across the bay and the title potomac and heading towards fredericksburg now. pa farther south, heaviest rain into virginia, just to the west

of norfolk stretching into north carolina. heavy downpours and all the rain advancing off to the north and east, where the track is going quickly. in fact, moving at about 30 miles. hour. peak wind gusts around 35 to 50 miles an hour. right now you can see the zone of potential track is narrowing. increasing confidence. it's probably going to be passing near the mouth of the chesapeake bay by around mid to late afternoon this afternoon. after that it's going to be off the coast of new jersey after midnight tonight. another one to three inches of rain possible on top of the inch we've had already. all of these contis in gree nu . maybe up to four-inch total amounts by the time it ends this evening. blustery winds, 30 miles an hour. over the weekend, sunshine back on saturday and sunday and a small chance of an afternoon maybe a morning shower tomorrow. maybe afternoon shower sunday. a small chance of that. could get afternoon storms each day monday into thursday next week. back with another tropical storm

the victim managed to fight him off and get away. detectives say king tried to do the same thing last july. in that case the victim was able to fight him off as well. king is facing several charges including attempted first-degree rape. d.c. police are hopening you can hype find the man who attacked a woman on chesapeake street wednesday. he claimed he was delivering a package. when she opened the door detectives say he hit her in the face and tried to sexually assault him. the 60-year-old woman says he it mace and handcuffs. she fought him off. police do not have the a goodell description of him. who shot and killed a woman's dog and why. the saint bernard bentley wandered away from their home over the weekend. her search across two counties came to a heartbreaking end when someone found bentley dead. the dog had been shot. she says she plans to press charges if investigators can find the shooter.

seven counties in maryland are still at odds with the state department of education over how to use student test scores to assess our teachers are doing. prince george's, charles and five our counties plan to submit proposals today. the state wants to make the test scores 20% of the calculation on evaluating teachers, giving the county three years to do so. that in standard's in place by the 2016 school year. today police and firefighters may begin sifting through the rubble of that historic building that housed the hardware store. investigators are still being cautious about entering the store making sure will are no more flare-ups and that the walls won't collapse. the "post" reports the store will actually be open saturday, sort of. it will open a stall at eastern market tomorrow to sell mostly garden supplies. the 93-year-old capitol hill staple went up in flames wednesday night. a big celebration on capitol hill. the accomplishment for one

tropical storm andrea. take you now live to wrightsville beach, north carolina. the surf there is picking up and conditions are expected to deteriorate today. it's not going to be a good day to go in the water. there is a tropical storm warning now in effect over the next 24 hours. they are expecting two to three inches of rain, winds of up to 30 to 40 miles per hour. there's also a chance of

for what he called personal and family reasons. the latest in a string of corruption charges against formal council member kwame brown and thomom jr. pleading guilty to charges. they're still looking to mayor vincent gray's 2010 campaign. today senator lautenberg will be laid to rest. the former colleagues paid respects yesterday. his casket lie in repose in the senate chamber. he died monday was 89 years old and represented new jersey three decades in the senate. lautenberg was the senate's last remaining world war ii veteran. and john dingle becomes the longest member of congress in history. a live look at the capitol now. dingle first arrived in the house in 1955 at the age of 29. he has now served 57 year, 5 months and 26 days. that beats out the late senator robert byrd of west virginia.

washington. another band in calvert county. charles, and across the potomac into prince william faulk here. the heaviest bands of rain are much farther south stretching from the mouth of the chesapeake bay to near richmond and charlottesville. the heaviest from southern virginia into north carolina. the pockets of yellow and orange, the heaviest rain advancing north as the latest track for andrea takes it southeast of us. it's going to be right near the mouth of the chesapeake bay between around fourp to 7:00 p.m. this evening, tracking just south and 50e6east of us along atlantic seaboard around ocean city towards assateague. after that, the position saturday east of the jersey coast and quickly pulling away. expect another one to three inches, maybe even up to four inches of additional rain, all of these counties in green under a flood watch into this evening including all of our viewing area, after everywhere east of
