in turkey using tear gas and water cannons to clear anti-government protesters from a public square. our richard engel caught in the middle of that chaos. he'll join us with a live report. and fashionably early. it's a baby girl for kim kardashian and kanye west. their bundle of joy arrived four weeks ahead of schedule, but just in time for father's day "today," sunday, june 16, 2013. this is "today" with lester holt and erica hill live from studio 1-a in rockefeller plaza. and welcome to "today" on this sunday morning. i'm erica hill. >> and i'm tom llamas along with dylan dreyer and mara schiavocampo. >> happy first father's day to you, tom. >> the first for me and for kanye. but as i learned this week --

>> it's nice that you have that bond. >> as i learned this week, father's day compared to moms, we'll tell you later in the show. >> sorry about that. better you find this out early. nice to have you this morning. we do want to begin with violent clashes happening in turkey. our chief foreign correspondent richard engel caught in the middle of it all and he joins us from istanbul with the very latest. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, erica. there has been more clashes here in istanbul this morning. the situation escalated yesterday when riot police moved in a taksim square to drive out protesters. we were here for that crackdown and saw what happened during it and what followed. turkish police moved in saturday night, a quick military style operation using water cannons and bulldozers to clear taksim square and the park inside of it

pr protesters don't want destroyed. cleared the square with ease. then things started to go wrong because now police had to keep people from turnireturning. and it was in the small streets around the square where police got much more aggressive. nbc news witnessed one incident at a nearby hotel. police used clubs to drive people off the streets and inside the hotel. police are moving out even beyond taksim square trying to push the protesters out of the side streets and keep them from gathering in any one place and returning to 0 taksim square. the hotel was a protester base. they set up a makeshift clinic in the lobby. then police fired tear gas inside the hotel. in an enclosed space, the gas is far more powerful. it can even be lethal. and like in most hotels, the windows here don't open. most of the demonstrators don't have proper gas masks.

they don't just choke, it burns. some faint, some go limp . this is not the image turkey wants to show. instead, prime minister erdogan has been holding mass rallies for him and his actions. he calls the protesters hooligans and vows to restore order. but even some of the prime minister's supporters are critical saying he may be overstepping, and by using so metropolitan force is turning a small protest into a protest movement. prime minister erdogan is expected to hold his biggest rally yet today. it could draw hundreds of thousands of people here in istanbul. luckily the rally won't be held in taksim square but out at the airport so there are unlikely to be clashes between erdogan supporters and protesters, but there are deep divisions in this country that are becoming even more distinct.

eri erica? >> that's for sure. richard engel, thank you. to another story developing overnight. an egypt air flight landed safely here in new york just hours ago after a passenger found a threatening note onboard. >> that flight was first diverted to scotland while they questioned passengers. >> reporter: passengers were expecting a direct flight from cairo to jfk. instead they ended up in scotland with a very serious scare in the air. relief as passengers arrived safely this morning at jfk airport. >> i think everybody knew it was an ordeal and they were all smiling and welcoming us home. >> i'm so tired. i just want to go to bed. i am very happy to be home. >> reporter: the flight that originated from cairo was diverted to glasgow, scotland. a bbc reporter on the flight says she found a threatening message written on a napkin in the bathroom. >> it said in english, i'll set this plane on fire with seat

number 46-d written on it. >> reporter: british military jets were called in to escort the plane to scotland. at first passengers were told it was a technical issue. nbc news producer carol goebel was also onboard. >> we descended fairly quickly. as we got on the ground we realized police were surrounding the airplane. >> reporter: snipers and police greeted passengers when they landed at the airport. anxious passengers were taken off the plane escorted arm in arm by police. >> the snipers were trained on us the entire time. >> reporter: passengers were ordered to give dna and interrogated about what happened onboard. >> they asked us about the restrooms we had used. >> reporter: despite the questions, weary passengers say there was no panic. >> it was always calm. this is a flight for international travelers. everybody was calm. >> reporter: so far there have been no arrests as investigators are still trying to determine who wrote that threatening note. erica? >> mara, thanks. we are learning more about the

government's controversial surveillance program. top intelligence officials say information objetained from twof them saw dozens of potential terrorist plots in the u.s. and 20 other countries. that news coming as the certificasearch intensifies for edward snowden, that 29-year-old who exposed the nsa program. he's believed to be hiding in hong kong and that is where ian williams is this morning. ian, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, erica. a week after edward snowden revealed himself as the source of one of the biggest ever init tell generals leaks, he's assumed still to be here in hong kong and in hiding. snowden is believed to be in a safe house somewhere in this rain swept city of 7.2 million people. where hundreds marched to the u.s. consulate saturday, his support demanding the hong kong government defend him, a sentiment that seems to have wide support here.

hong kong's leader has responded for the first time with a pledge to follow established local laws. the territory ruled by britain until it was returned to china in 1997 has a well-respected legal system with considerable independence. but beijing has the final say in extradition cases. state newspapers there have reveled in what they call the hypocrisy of the u.s. government which has accused china of cyber spying and the internet companies thatry parentally worked with it. but the chinese government itself has been tightlipped. >> in this instance i think they'll tell you that process of law will take place in hong kong and can we get it as quickly as possible. >> reporter: he may be hiding but as of now snowden is not a fugitive. he's broken no hong kong laws and is yet to be charged in the u.s., which surprises the former head of the rural hong kong police criminal intelligence bureau. >> the longer he's here and the longer he digs in, the more difficult it will be to pry him out. >> reporter: the complex

politics of hong kong may be one reason snowden chose to come here. this is one of the most crowded cities on the planet. it's not difficult simply to disappear here. while somewhere here the man described by his girlfriend as a keen chess player is plotting his next move. hong kong media has reported that snowden is seeking legal help locally and there's no shortage of high-profile lawyers lining up to take on a case that could take months or even years, erica. >> ian williams in hong kong this morning, thank you. turning now to politics, social conservatives wrapped up a three-day conference in washington, d.c., this weekend with some of the most fiery voices of the republican party speaking out. they fired up the party faithful but will their message resonate with a wider audience? here is kristen welker. d.c. is one hot mess. >> reporter: as the republican party struggles to find its footing, former vice presidential candidate sarah

palin topped off the krns with a blistering attack on the obama administration. >> i say until we have someone who knows what they're doing, i say let us sort it out. >> reporter: real estate mogul and reality tv star donald trump took aim at his own party organizing mitt romney ran a weak political campaign. >> you can't get it wrong again. you got it wrong. you can't get it wrong again. >> reporter: words that rallied the conservative base but didn't achieve much more according to some and a cysts. >> this is not the future of the republican party. >> reporter: susan page says it rests with 2016 contenders including senator rand paul and senator marco rubio who is spearheading immigration reform, which could can be key to the gop winning wider margins among hispanic voters. >> but at the essence of our immigration policy is compassion. >> reporter: noticeably absent, new jersey governor and obama

pal chris christie who made an appearance at the clinton global initiative in chicago. analysts say while this weekend's conference in washington was rousing for social conservatives, the gop has more work to do to broaden its outreach. for "today," kristen welker, nbc news, washington. david gregory is joining us now, moderator of "meet the press." david, good morning. >> good morning. >> so, as we just heard in kristen's piece, there is a battle going on for the republican party within the party. we talked about this for some time. is the gop any closer to finding basically a middle ground that can unite republicans? >> i don't know that they are. i think what's striking about the gathering of social conservatives here is the message that you heard was, hey, you got it wrong because you heard donald trump say you had a more establishment candidate, somebody who didn't have great conservative or social conservative credentials and look at the results. you lost and lost pretty convincingly. so you're going to have a social

conservative, more of a tea party type. maybe it's rand paul, marco rubio is certainly in that mix, jeb bush is a more uniting force but with strong credentials. and then you have the likes of chris christie whose position is much more of a moderate trying to pull his party to the center. that's the tension. and that tension will go clear into 2016. the republican primaries, again, will decide this and there you're going to have the more establishment candidate and a base oriented candidate from the conservative movement and we'll see how many of those are there that split up that vote. >> so we should get used to it, david? >> basically. >> as we heard earlier in the broadcast this morning, we're learning more about that nsa program, intelligence officials saying dozens of terror plots were thwarted in the case. we're learning about the number of records that were searched but we still don't know where edward snowden is. how much of an impact is that search and the lack of a find something on the administration?

>> well, they're concerned about it. they want to certainly track him down. are there other secrets that he's poised to reveal? that's number one. and what he's been talking about publicly with regard to what the united states may be doing in terms of spying and hacking activities against china, certainly is undermining the u.s. relationship with china. so there's no question that they want to bring him to justice. the question is how and when. it's a question we'll take up this morning. >> we'll check in with you in a little bit for a look at what else you have coming up on "meet the press." now the rest of the morning's top stories including another plane scare. this one for former president george w. bush. mara is back now with the latest. good morning, tom. happy father's day and happy father's day to the rest of you. a scare overnight on former president george w. bush's plane. according to reports, his gulf stream jet was diverted to louisville because of smoke in the cockpit. his spokesman says the former president is safe at home in dallas this morning. jubilation in iran as a new

president is elected. he spoke to the voters who chose him in a landslide over more conservative candidates. his victory saturday brought wild celebrations throughout iran. new developments in the madeleine mccann case. for the first time scotland yard will investigate the disappearance of the little girl. madeleine went missing during a vacation to portugal in 2007 just before her fourth birthday. portuguese police cleared her parents of wrongdoing. now the british police say they have new suspects they want to interview. are the most destructive wildfire in colorado history is more than halfway contained. nearly 500 homes have been destroyed by the fire. today some of the tens of thousands of people evacuated will be allowed to go home. after looking at the destruction one fire official said it was as if a nuclear bomb had gone off. and, finally, what would you do if you came face-to-face with a 30-foot shark? well, ride it, of course. 19-year-old chris was fishing in the gulf of mexico when a giant

what's that like for you to do that together? >> well, for me having my son just stand up and say, dad, i'm donating a kidney to you, there's no words to say it. that is my hero. and he will always be my hero as long as i'm alive. >> we know you're a huge yankees fan, and because of your illness a lot of times you bought tickets to the yankees games and you were not able to go. we have a very special message for you, and it's father's day so, of course, a surprise. check it out. >> he loves the new york yankees. i heard about your story. it's a great story. i know you have to be so proud of your son, and i know this father's day is real special for you. why not make it even more special. come to yankees stadium and spend the day with us. we have some tickets for you. >> a personal invitation.

so there's three categories, evening wear, swimsuit and, of course, the interview. what are you looking for? which category will be the one you really want to judge? >> well, they're all an integral part to the competition be a representing a young lady to represent our country internationally, they're all extremely important and i know they're all going to do a great job. >> you know, this is a pretty sweet gig where. were your fellow cardinals jealous? >> they all texted me and called me how lucky. the ladies not so much. >> there's been some preliminary rounds so far in the judging of the competition. are there any front-runners? >> well, you know what, to be honest, i haven't even been able to see any of the preliminary rounds or any of the girls, for that matter. they try to keep that stuff as private as possible so it's a fair competition.
