this one in northeast, started before 6:00 last night at an empty apartment on gallaudet street. these pictures tweeted out. took 20 minutes to put this one out. no one hurt, but they aren't sure the cause of the fire. d.c. man behind bars, charged in a murder two weeks ago in northeast. this is surveillance video released after 32-year-old robert plight shot to death on june 1st. the man in the video has been arrested. 24-year-old allen culver, charged with second degree murder. and police are looking for the person who shot into a home and a cake shop. police called to cakes and confections and found a window damaged by a bullet. 15 minutes later, called to a home a few blocks away, bullets lodged in the wall of a bedroom

investigators trying to determine what suspicious substance caused six border protection officers to get sick. the incident happened yesterday morning along the canada/u.s. border in new york. the u.s. customs and border protection agency say the officers got sick after searching a car and found the substance. hazmat teams brought in to investigate. the driver, taken into custody. six officers had to be treated

but later released from the hospital. an egypt air flight landed in new york after it was diverted because of threat. passengers reunited with families. the flight from cairo it new york had to stop in scotland four hours into the flight. a producer from the bbc found a note on the plane that read "i'll set this plane on fire." the producer alerted the crew. british fighter jets escorted the plane to scotland. the plane was searched. nothing was found. police did not make any arrests in the case. time, 9:12. still ahead, fighting back. the nsa adefending controversial surveillance. second chances inside

family and friends mourning the loss of a long-time federal judge. thomas penfeld jackson died of cancer yesterday. he sentenced marion berry to prison and struck down the presidential line item veto law in 1997. he is from bethesda. he went to law school at harvard. jackson, 76 years old. learning more information about the two controversial surveillance programs by the national security agency. top agents say the program thwarted potential terrorist plots in the u.s. and more than 20 other countries. >> reporter: in september 2009, imag

zazi would be arrested in colorado. the following january, the arrest of an alleged coconspirator. both examples of what u.s. intelligence officials say the national security agency surveillance programs work. according to information released saturday by the senate intelligence committee, this is one of dozens of flots thwarted by the program. they have found themselves in the hot seat after classified information was leaked by edward snowden. intelligence officials say that fewer than 300 phone numbers investigated last year. in a database of millions of phone records collected by the nsa. they can only be examined for suspected connections to terrorism. the intelligence community tried to push back in overreach of phones and internet use auj. google and facebook, pushing as well. allowing for more transparency

5.8 magnitude quake, centered 75 miles south of mexico city. power went out in parts of the city. no major damages or injuries reported. firefighters have 55% of that black forest fire contained in colorado. most mandatory evacuations lifted, but many people remain displaced. cooler temperatures, lower humidity, are helping. chuck bell has told us that firefighters can expect the same today. the fire killed two people and burned nearly 500 homes. yesterday, president obama called colorado governor john hickenlooper to learn more about the firefighting efforts. one community near colorado springs came out to thank firefighters that worked so hard to stop the fire from destroying more homes. todd walker reports.
