news4's derrick ward talked to the victim's family. >> reporter: on this father's day a family is incomplete. a loved one is missed by all who share this home. >> it is father's day. it's just rough. >> when i heard the news, i already couldn't believe it. it was like a dream or something. i was, like, no. not tiara. >> she loved music and poetry and his 18-year-old son. jackson was a victim of a horrific beltway incident a week ago. maryland state police say it was around 1:45 a.m. on saturday, june 8th, when her chrysler hit the guard rail and spun to reou came to rest. she was hit by several vehicles when she got out of her car and one of those vehicles may have been a tractor-trailer and know for sure none of those vehicles

stopped. >> someone saw something. they know something. someone's car came home that was smashed in that wasn't when they left home and they don't have a good explanation as to why. >> being the last one is heartbroken. >> this family has questions. the car hit the guard rail twice. >> car was smashed in the rear. i don't know if someone hit her in the back that would have caused the accident or it's just up in the air right now at this point. >> reporter: there's the void that her laughter and sense of humor and poetry used to fill. >> she's the one who kept everyone laughing in the household. everyone's spirits lifted. so it's going to be hard just having that bright sunshine not there anymore. >> derrick ward, news4. >> anyone who may have any information about this crash is asked to call maryland state police. crews cut apart trees and boarded up homes in montgomery county today. four days after thunderstorms ripped through that area.

news4's darcy spencer talked to residents in rockville as they deal with the destruction left behind. >> it's pretty scary. scariest thing i've been through. >> reporter: terry saunders and her family call this backyard their sanctuary. >> my dad's putting green was back here. this is where we lived when they were kids. we ate breakfast on the grill down there. everything. >> reporter: the yard of the flower valley drive home in rockville was severely damaged by thursday's strong storms. today some of the trees being sawed into pieces and hauled away. >> i do know what a car zone looks like. >> reporter: three days after the storms, some families in rockville still have these unsafe signs on their doors. structural damage that needs to be fixed before they can go back in. >> i'm so grateful that my family is safe. >> reporter: over on stevens court, trees toppled into homes. keith adams says he feels fortunate that he dodged the damage this time.

down toward fredericksburg and stafford getting in on light rain showers this evening and very loud thunderstorms now rolling right through the heart of ocean city, maryland. not a good night out at the beaches. for us on your monday morning back to work, mostly cloudy. 69 degrees at 5:00 a.m. and quickly warming up. mid 70s by 9:00 a.m. we'll talk about how much warmer it will be tomorrow afternoon and anymore rain chances on down through the rest of the week. all that is coming up. >> crews battling wildfires in colorado call today a great day. the fire is now 65% contained and they believe that that number is going to go up tomorrow. firefighters say cooler temperatures and lower humidity are helping them battle the flames. crews are still working very hard to put out hot spots and prevent flare-ups in the colorado springs area. the 22-square mile fire has destroyed nearly 500 homes and also killed two people. we're following a developing story from syria tonight. there are reports of an

explosion at the military airport on the western edge of damascus. because of limited media access, nbc news cannot confirm the explosion. the airport is home to president assad's elite forces. there's been heavy fighting reported around damascus as syrian rebels attack government forces and buildings. as the civil war inside syria grows more dire, some members of congress are calling on the u.s. to do more. >> no boots on the ground is sort of everyone's position including mine because the rebels don't want us in there. i think you can neutralize the airpower by cratering the runways with cruise missiles and set up no-fly zone by having aircraft and patriot missile batteries operating out of turkey and jordan to nuclearize the airpower. >> it's estimated 93,000 people have died in the syrian conflict over the last two years. syria expected to be a hot poppic at this week's g-8 summit. president obama and the first lady left the white house last

night. looking for consensus building on ending the fight in syria and also on the agenda, trade, economic growth and tax policies. the two-day summit will include leaders from france, canada, russia and japan. security is expected to be extremely tight in the u.k. can large protests planned. north korea wants to negotiate with the united states. the country proposed high level nuclear and security talks today. the white house says it's open to negotiations as long as those negotiations are credible. the obama administration says the discussions must be based on north korea living up to its obligations including scrapping any plans to build nuclear weapons. intelligence officials released more evidence today that those controversial surveillance programs are actually helping to stop terrorism. they gave new details about a previously unknown terror arrest and as brian mooar reports now, even some of the president's biggest adversaries are defending the surveillance.

he has discloses sources and methods that will put american lives in danger. >> reporter: intelligence officials say only 300 phone records were followed up on last year. >> we need to find the right balance between protecting our privacy which is sacred in the president's view and protecting the country from the real risks and threats we face. >> reporter: washington trying to calm critics who worry uncle sam is becoming big brother. brian mooar, nbc news, washington. three people injured after a deck collapsed this afternoon at a home in st. mary's county. this happened in hollywood, maryland. the deck suddenly fell eight feet to the ground. state police say two people had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. one flown to a shock trauma center but everyone is expected to survive. not clear why the deck collapsed. a development in the effort to pushback the start time in fairfax county. the school board hired a team of

sleep experts to move sleep time to 8:00 a.m. right now classes begin at 7:20. specialists will hold meeting to discuss how to implement the time change. last april the school board agreed to move high school start times back to 8:00 but so far no changes have been made. tomorrow prince george's county executive will announce the final three seats on the board of education. a new bill went into effect allowing four additional members to be part of the board. under the new law, baker will appoint three of those members and the county council appoints one member to the board. teachers and staff are expected to get a pay raise starting next month. the county school board is scheduled to vote wednesday on salary increases and cost of living adjustments for thousands of school district employees. the cost of living adjustments would range from 1% to 2% of employee salaries and they would take effect in july. the step increases would go into

nelson mandela's family members were seen visiting a south african hospital today. the 94 year old has been there for over a week with a lung infection. there hasn't been an update on his health since thursday when it was reported he is improving but still in serious condition. an unusual sight at the vatican this sunday. pope francis blessed thousands of harley motorcycles.

the blessing in honor of the motorcycle maker's 110th anniversary. the pope's our father prayer was nearly drown out by the thundering engines from the bikes. it's estimated half a million harley owners rolled into rome for the four-day celebration. state of the art solar plane on display in virginia today. the solar impulse landed at dulles early this morning making its second to last stop on a cross-country trip. the pilots are making the first attempt to fly a plane day and night across the country, get this, without any fuel. the swiss made plane is powered by thousands of solar cells that convert light into electricity to charge the plane's batteries. pilots say they learned a lot from their journey. >> we can focus on energy savings and to make it fly date and night we had to reduce energy consumption. >> huge potential that we can make things that people think are impossible like flying an airplane day and night with no

annapolis into st. mary's county. calvert county down . so what's tomorrow looking like? again, much like today. a lot more of a cloud issue than a rain issue tomorrow. scattered showers can't be completely ruled out. most of the day will be just warm, humid and on the cloudy side. highs tomorrow much like today. generally middle to upper middle 80s around the area. 84 to about 87 or 88 degrees. there will be a rain threat tomorrow and like we have on radar now. most of the rain threat down to the south of washington. any point could get rain. rain showers for now on your late sunday evening southern parts of fauquier county down to southern prince william county along i-95 getting below the capital beltway rain showers will greet you from woodbridge to quantico.

most of the showers are fairly light. the strongest storms by far are out here onto parts of the eastern shore where ocean city has been getting quite a round of thunderstorms here late this evening. that's where most of the action is going to be centered again for tomorrow as a weather front to our south sort of stalls out across parts of central virginia. showers mainly from washington southbound tomorrow but if you live in northern maryland don't rule out the opportunity. a lot of mugginess in the air for tomorrow. and that will last on into the first part of your tuesday as well. tuesday a little ripple of low pressure coming up the coastline means enhanced chance for rain showers on your tuesday. once that area of low pressure goes away, it is going to be nice around here for a couple of days. overnight mostly cloudy, muggy. a couple sprinkles south of town. lows 64 to 70. for tomorrow, a mix of clouds and sunshine. passing showers in the afternoon. warm and humid. highs mid to upper 80s. heading down to the coastline, monday not a bad day. tuesday kind of showery. sunshine returns on wednesday.

it was a father's day to remember for hundreds of families in washington state today. about 250 soldiers were reunited with their loved ones in this emotional homecoming. some brought cameras and signs but one army wife brought something her husband has never seen before. his own little girl. his daughter, specialist got to hold and meet his 2-month-old daughter willow for the first time today. a group of soldiers returned home after spending seven months in afghanistan supporting security forces there. what a father's day. >> sweet. >> that's our news for tonight.
