"early today" starts right now. >> announcer: this is "early today" for monday, june 17th. very good morning, nice to see you again, i'm veronica de la cruz. the leaders of a summit begin a two-day summit in northern ireland. discussions of civil war in syria are expected to dominate the agenda as well as economic issues as well as tax and trade. nbc' chuck todd is in belfast where the president has just landed, chuck, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, veronica. he sure did. the entire first family is here,

actually. the president's first piece of business, actually, is going to be in belfast. he's giving a speech to northern ireland students to talk about sort of the progresses or frankly what has been very slow progress for northern ireland's economy here in the last decade ever since the peace process between ireland and northern ireland. it just -- the country -- the province has gotten off to a slow start. but then after he does that speech that is directed to locals, it's beginning to the g-8 summit. and the issues here are going to be interesting in this respect when it comes to syria. you essentially have the old g-7 plus russia. russia, of course, was added to the g-8 a few years ago, and they're sort of isolated when it comes to syria. president putin is on the side of bashar al assad. he's been helping shar al assad with arms. putin had a one-on-one with

british prime minister david cameron. that didn't go so well, he seemed to lecture the allies and what they planned to do with syria. syria is going to be a hot you topic. and what the consensus is. and is there consensus between the u.s., the brits and the french on what to do next with syrian opposition. >> nbc's chuck todd there in belfast. chuck, thank you. and one topic sure to come up at the g-8 summit are the newly sclofd nsa programs. the man at the center of the leak edward snowden still hiding as officials believe he may be revealing more top secret documents. former vice president dick cheney is joining to call for snowden's prosecution. he said the 29-year-old is a criminal and a traitor. mr. cheney presented the program saying it prevented numerous terrorist attacks and could have stopped 9/11. >> i think it's one of the worst occasions in my memory with

somebody with access to classified information doing enormous damage to the national security interest of the united states. over the weekend, white house chief of staff denis mcdonough said officials are still looking for edward snowden. he was last known to be in hong kong. the white house has repeatedly said snowden has exaggerated his access to sensitive information. and what what could be another blow to your privacy? your face could be among 120 million that state officials are troving through. reporting that the white house is using data basis to prevent driver as license fraud, instead to identify accomplices and incident bystanders in criminal investigations. the only legal environment is for searches to be conducted for law enforcement. it's to help identify murderers but the post reports it's to lure between criminal and noncriminal databases.

this is the weather pattern, it's kind of looking more and more like summer every day. we've got the onshore flow in the west coast. it's typical there, keeping you cool there. we do have a few areas of thompls as ute expected. one of those is over the top of oklahoma at this point. lots of lightning strike, 16,000 in a half-hour period. as far as oklahoma city, the worst is now beginning to pass here, south of it and eastward. we did have wind damage overnight. be careful if you're heading out this morning. some of the rainfall in colorado has exited so now we're drying. later this afternoon, looks like 20% chance of storms. remember last week, it was 90 and 100. now it's cool. the weather is helping the firefighters over the weekend and it will continue to do so on your monday. as far as the east coast, lots of rain due. have the umbrella handy. we'll have that all the way from dallas and ft. weather. that's a look at your national

well, good monday morning. hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. in oklahoma a lot of people woken up in the middle of the night. strong line of thunderstorms going through the middle of the state to the other end. just wednesday through oklahoma city, tulsa, damaging winds and a lot of lightning with the storms. eventually, later today we will see the storms on the dallas-ft. worth area. all the way back through arkansas, the southeast and then lent that. tuesday, a lot of that heavy weather to the east coast. nothing horrible, no tornadoes or anything like that, but enough to cause you a slow commute. the latest superman movie leaps over box office expectations in a single bound.
