just as he is about to meet with fellow g-8 leaders and talk about trade and economy in syria comes the new revelation from edward snowden. it could make things awkward. >> let's get to andrea mitchell who is covering this for us. good morning to you. good morning. edward snowden has struck even. he is released documents on high level spying on foreign leaders including the then president of russia. >> reporter: yet another disclosure that great britain spied on world leaders at two london summit in 2009. one of them targeted the then russian president. protestors outside the u.s. kons lit in hong kong were demonstrating in support of snowden, the acknowledged nsa leaker. >> i think a great person is willing to expose this. >> reporter: china is encouraging support for snowden

ever since he told a chinese newspaper last week that the u.s. hacked into computers there for years. on fox, dick chaney who helped institute it and congress rejected the surveillance program. >> i think he's a traitor and committed crimes by violating agreements begin the position he had. >> reporter: snowden is still believed to be in hong kong although the white house can't find him. >> i don't know where he is right now. >> reporter: the debate of the secret programs escalates. >> it's important that the american people know what's being done in their name. >> it is protecting the united states from terrorists attacks. >> reporter: lawmakers want more privacy protection. >> once the fbi gets the information then the question is who can look at it, what can you do with information? >> reporter: while the administration assesses the damage, this warning from former cia and nsa chief.

what i fare they learn is not what we're about to do but they learn what we're not allowed to do and they learn the limits of the program. >> there are unconfirmed reports that edward snowden has applied for asylum. also british officials say they haven't seen enough of the new documents to comment one way or another. it would not be surprising, nbc news reports years ago that the clinton administration eves dropped in miami and he would not stay at the summit retreat not knowing who would be listening in. thank you. let's bring in nbc's chief white house correspondence chuck todd. this would add awkwardness if not tension as these leaders converge in the uk amid allegations that there was spying during the g-20 in 2009.

>> there will be real tension and we'll get to that in a minute but in talking to senior administration officials about this, they have their oh, nothing to see here and they're shocked that that's going on between countries. countries do this to each other all the time. this is what happens at summits, this is what happens at negotiations. but that said, given what has happened and these summits, particularly the 1-on-1 relation ships between leaders are about trust so to add a level of distrust, particularly between the russians and there's a light hearted story about putin stealing a super bowl ring but i'm sure he won't be happy to hear the u.s. was involved in eaves dropping on his predecessor. >> they talk about syria and that has to be some of the primary work of the summit as they go on these couple of days. >> it is. the dominant issue of the summit

will be syria. it's a g- 8 but it's really a g-7 and 1. it will have a cold war atmosphere when president obama and putin have their 1-on-1 because they have a big disagreement over what to do about syria. >> reporter: after touching down, the president's first order of business, a speech to a mostly younger audience for north ireland's future. >> every single one of you possess something your generation before you did not. that's an example to follow. when those that took a chance on peace got started they didn't have a successful model to emulate. they didn't know how it would work. >> reporter: but the real focus of the quick trip is the g-8 summit as the u.s. and most of it's western allies try to prop up the country's two year civil war. tensions could run high between g-7 and russia as putin stuck by

syria's leader. he met with david cameron and his comments after that meeting may foreshadow a cold war-like exchange over syria when they meet later today. >> supply weapons to the government in regards of who has the blood of the children and peaceful citizens of syria, i believe you will not deny that the hands are on both of the parties. president obama is a reluctant supporter of arming the opposition and getting plenty of heat from congress. >> this is about whether or not we exert american leadership with our allies abroad both in the gulf region and in europe. >> last year he was isolated. he had very few friends. he was hanging by a thread. this year he is entrenched

hezbollah, iran and russia. >> the economy is taking a rare backseat at the summit. partly a reflection of the slow and steady recovery but how they pay taxes to the big 8 countries is likely to be a big issue. matt. thank you. something else expected to get attention the results of iran's election. a moderate cleric is replacing mahmoud ahmadinejad. he won overwhelmingly, what do we know about him? >> he's been backed heavily by the reformist but he's not a reformist. on the inner circle of the conservative rulers of iran. he has a good relationship with the supreme leader and the reformists that came out heavily

backing him. if it wasn't for the country's leading reformist he wouldn't have become president. >> when you think of the list of things the united states and iran disagree on. the nuclear program is one of the things that jumps out. how might this new president impact the direction of that program, if at all. >> well, he was chief nuclear negotiator during the late 90s, early 2000 and that's when they saw a suspension of uranium enrichment. he came under heavy criticism for that. it will be interesting to see what course he takes the nuclear program in. since he left power and ahmadinejad came into power they took a much harder line on the nuclear program. we'll have to see if he tries to reverse that at all or if indeed he can. >> most of the power in iran lies there so is he just a

figure head or will he have real power? >> we'll have to see if he can make tangible changes or this is just a softening turn. the supreme leader is the most powerful man in the land, the constitution says the president is the second most powerful man. we'll see easier negotiating part but the ultimate decision lie with the supreme leader and we don't know what he's thinking right now, matt. ali, thank you very much. well, firefighters in colorado are making more progress against the costliest wild fire in that state's history. david is in colorado springs this morning. david, good morning. >> reporter: good morning savannah. it is 65% contained right now but that doesn't mean the fire is out. they're calling it the blast forest fire and as we learned through the weekend as we toured the area, that's exactly what it looks like. we're talking 20 square miles

burned through neighborhoods. more than 500 homes have been burned to the ground here. two people have died and it's very hard for the 1200 crews that are out there and going acre by acre trying to put the fire out. it's burning in the most unusual places right now. not on a hillside, a ridge of fire you would normally see. this is burning underneath the ground and inside the trees -- yes, inside these ponderosa pines. it's very difficult but they're doing that this morning. thank you very much. >> encouraging news this morning about the health of britain's prince phillip. >> good morning. prince phillip left a london hospital walking out and waving ten days after abdominal surgery.

they have said he is making satisfactory progress. the 92-year-old is expected to rest a couple of months. meanwhile, nelson mandela is hospitalized this morning for a condition. he is improving. love and generosity from around the world brought hope and comfort. she says the family is grateful for messages of support that have come in cards, letters and calls texts and tweets and on facebook. incredible scene of devastation this morning, torrential rain and flooding washed away buildings killing at least 23 people in northern india. dozens more are missing. a landslide nearby buried a bus. tensions are still running high after days of turmoil in turkey. on sunday, police used tear gas and water cannons on demonstrators protesting against the government. more than 400 people were taken

good morning. >> good morning. this is quite a story. they're made of gold and diamonds with a street value of tens of thousands. robert craft gifted his to the russian president, or did he? it seems odd two grown men disagreig over a ring but this is not an ordinary ring and these are not two ordinary men. the owner of the new england patriots and billionaire business man, vladimir putin, president of russia and self-described outdoors man. the story starts in 2005 when the patriots won the super bowl. the owner along with the entire team got a ring. not long afterwards he was part of a high profile business concert in st. petersburg russia where the ring exchanged hands. the russian president tried it on and kept it. craft said it was a gift. but now, 8 years later he told a

different story to a gala. he said i took out the ring and showed it to putin and he put it on and he goes i can kill someone with this ring. i put my handout and he put it in his pocket and three kgb guys got around him and walked out. according to the new york post he went on to say it was the bush administration that pressured him to call the ring a present for the sake of foreign relationships. bush officials wouldn't comment. he was a patriots fan his entire life. season tickets since '91, bought the team in '94. >> it means a lot more than the value of the ring and diamonds. you don't want to lose any ring from any championship and each one in it's own way is more important than the other. >> a spokesperson says thursday night's story was meant to be funny. it's a humorous story he retells

and tighter. tom could sstello is at reagan international airport. what's the deal. >> reporter: good morning. if you're traveling this summer you'll be interested in this. we're all checking our bags and sometimes to carry on a bag for a soda or snack, even to sit in an emergency exit row, well, now, things are likely to get even a little tighter. those romantic days of yester year flying are gone. it can feel more like a cattle call. now they're shrinking the leg room. american airlines will likely add more seats to economy seating. >> i don't know how they can cram more seats in the planes. >> reporter: the standard seat has 31 inches of leg room.

but standard leg room has shrunk by three inches over the last 10 to 15 years. >> in fact, over the last 50 years the average american is an inch taller, 24 pounds heavier and the airlines are cramming in more seats giving you less and less space. >> reporter: american is only considering what many airlines have already done. installing thinner seats or moving rows closer together. united added six seats to 8319, and southwest added 6 seats to it's 737. spirit airlines uses the maximum number of light weight seats that the faa allows and they don't recline. a spokesperson says this allows us to offer lower fares and makes us more efficient. >> we need more room for people my height. i'm almost 7 feet tall. >> you can pay for extra leg

mccann. michelle is in london with this story. michelle, good morning. >> reporter: hey savannah. it's been since years since madeline disappeared from her bed in an apartment her family was renting in portugal. there the case went nowhere but today the british government is taking the step of funding it's own administration acknowledging the possibility too that madeline could still be alive. madeline's face is recognizable practically worldwide but no one has been able to say what happened to her. portugal closed the case. but the british government now is willing to reopen it funding it's own investigation with police here in the hopes of finally solving it. >> they have come up with some leads, some suspects they don't think were investigated properly. >> reporter: two years ago a small group of british investigators were tasked with looking over the portuguese files of the case when

madeline's parents said they were thinking on their three sleeping children every half hour while they were at dinner a few hundred yards away. she realized she was gone from her bed. >> my heart lurched as i saw now that behiebd them the window was wide open and the shutters on the outside raised all the way up. nausea, terror, disbelief, fear, icy fear. there's still leads and people to talk to that were never followed up. scotland yard said we are encouraged by the progress we are making and continue to identify potential lines of inquiry. and the mccanns just before the 6th anniversary of her disappearance in may appeared on british television. >> the search is on going. nothing is slowing down. if anything i feel like it's escalating and again, it's just be vigilant. please still take your posters on holiday and don't forget about that she is still missing. we haven't lost hope.

causing a stir of another kind. splashed across the british newspaper this morning photographs of lawson and her former advertising executive husband charles saatchi in a heated argument at a popular london restaurant. the pictures, some shocking in nature show saatchi grabbing lawson by the neck several times. >> she is the darling of british television community. there's nothing like a photograph capturing an incident like this to make fans sit up and listen on social media. that's exactly what happened in this incident. >> reporter: just as disturbing to those that have seen the photos is that no one steps in to help. several tweets condemned the alleged conversation. don't know what's worse, charles saatchi publicly assaulting nigella lawson or that not a single person intervened. while others offered words of report like stay strong nigella we love you.

they left saatchi's apartment separately following the altercation. she admits they have had their moments. they have even previously been caught on camera arguing in public. lawson has been busy promoting her new book in the uk while preparing for a u.s. tour and is known for the reality show the taste. >> she is the number one tv chef in britain. you can't underestimate how big a star this lady is in the united kingdom. >> lawson has not made a complaint but they are establishing the facts of the indent. we reached out to both parties for a statement. we haven't heard back from saatchi. nigella lawson's attorneys have no comment. >> it's disturbing on a lot of different levels. coming up, the difficult subject being addressed by sesame street for the first time. and up next, the miss usa

before. >> reporter: meet california painter tom everhart who has taken the peanuts comic strip and transformed it into this. pop culture has become pop art. colorful, vibrant, unexpected. the paintings are so popular they have been shown in exhibits around the world, even in paris at the louvre and recently in new york city. but everhart admits he never imagined his career would be linked to snoopy and friends. >> it was the last thing i expected. >> because. >> i had no education in cartooning. even as a child i wasn't interested in cartoons. i was interested in coloring books. >> reporter: in 1980 he met the peanut's creator charles schulz and the two became fast friends. >> we did nothing but drawing lines for hours. thin lines, fat lines.

going to be a friend of the relationship. >> that's a great point and i think that we find at women's health that people that spend a lot of time on social media, especially facebook have higher levels of jealousy in their relationship. a little bit, okay. but things can get rocky and you don't want to be obsessively checking out who they're friends with. >> i don't friend anybody on my facebook. >> nice guy. >> yeah, okay, what to do if your boss sends you inappropriate sexual text messages. a majority of participants said they would send a message back to their boss saying that's inappropriate. larger numbers said they would go directly to human resources to report it or ignore it completely. this is a tricky situation. a lot of people, if you report you could face consequences. if you don't report you're going to be dealing with an even worse situation. >> absolutely.

the number one thing to do is do not text or if there is more of them, save it. you want that record. we agree you want to go to hr. confronting the boss directly as you said could get a little sticky so you want to go to hr with the record so it doesn't become a he said, she said thing and make sure you understand your company's sexual harassment policy. could be a firing offense so you want to protect yourself. >> 7.6% said they would use it to climb the corporate ladder. >> yeah. >> wow. >> and more men said they would do that than women. >> oh. >> next question, what to do if you find out your partner snooped through your personal messages like texts, e-mails or facebook. 56% would want to get to the root of why their partner was snooping but 41% expressed genuine concern for their partner's distress. what do you think? >> this is an all too common

situation. we're all on our smartphones. we're texting, we're e-mailing. it's natural to want to know who are you talking to or writing with and if your response is not revealing that can breed suspicion which leads to snooping. this happens very often. >> how should it be handled? >> it's interesting, a small but significant percentage said i'll give my partner my password. i think in a loving, trusting, committed relationship you should have nothing to hide and the concept of snooping shouldn't even exist in the first place. >> right. >> and here's another one, what to do if you discover that your partner is sexting with someone else. 68% would confront their partner about. 32% wouldn't. 20% said they would just flat out leave their partner. that seems like a high number. >> well look. look at what we're seeing in the news with folks like anthony wiener.

in some ways, the whole thing is out of control. it's interesting that a lot of people said they wouldn't do anything which tells me that a lot of the texts are probably not as graphic but more in that middle zone of flirtation. and i think in the end we have to get some control of technology. i think it's really just advancing at such a rapid pace that it's really ahead of our relationships. >> but yet very much a part of it as we know so i would say, you know, what is the text? is it a little flirtatious or is it more x-rated. we want to talk about what is a sext and what is more harmless. >> and flirtation too. how much are you going to allow in your relationship. >> throughout this study we saw in any flirting scenario people are willing to allow a degree of flirtation. whether it's with a partner's best friend. >> the survey said 45% would confront their friend if their friend was flirting with their

there's a great movie coming out called "the paw project." we're very anti-declaw these days. ohio state university vet studies ran studies on thisser if product. you can also put double sided sticky tape on furniture so they are -- this is just cat nip. sprinkle it in a two foot by two foot area it gives them body rolling. so we want to detour them from the couch with these products and then also give them, of course, a place to scratch on because they do need to scratch to decrease their tension. >> all of our cats are on leashes which i thought was weird. but you say it's a good thing to do. >> yeah, we are trying not to, of course, increase the ferile cat population. and it's great environmental
