good afternoon. i'm pat. >> we begin with breaking news, a plea from a man known as the slasher. erica is live with an update. >> this after joon johnny pimentel pled guilty. prosecutors say that pimentel targeted women at malls and used razors to slice their backsides before running away. he escaped to peru and was extradited back to the united states. we are not sure of his motive in these attacks. meanwhile, pimentel will be sentenced in september. he faces up to seven years in prison. the fbi is once again digging for jimmy hoffa's remains. the warrant they had to search

here is sealed but an aging ex-gangster they have been talking to may have led them to this location. the former teamsters bob was with the mob when he disappeared in 1995. an underboss told our affiliate that the plan was to quickly move hoffa and bury him later. they said that the hunt was too intense so they abandoned that plan. there is a murder-suicide. the bodies of a man and woman were found six hours ago in a highrise. as mike reports -- >> reporter: neighbors heard a woman screaming and then multiple gunshots. when police got to the scene of the 21st floor, they found a man and a woman both dead. the person who called police was still inside the apartment. coming up at 5:00, i'll tell you why police believe this was a

murder suicide. in fairfax, mark seagraves, news 4. a double shooting in south d.c. landed two people in the hospital. a 20-year-old man was shot in the face. a 17-year-old girl was shot in both legs and her chest. the shooting happened just before 2:00 on the block of g street. we're staying in contact with police on word of a possible motive and suspects. ♪ a high school teacher known for his rap teaching youtube videos is on administrative leave today on drug charges. brandon was arrested last month. police tell us he had a large amount of marijuana in his vehicle. officers say he was stopped for

diplomats during a previous summit. according to "the guardian," british hacked the phones and e-mails of britain. documents from edward snowden, the man who says he is behind the nsa leak. if you live in virginia, you helped pay for vitamins for governor bob mcdonald's dog and other personal items, including his sunscreen and body wash. according to "the washington post," the mcdonald's used taxpayer money for stuff that they should have bought on their own. they billed the state for things like shoe repairs and their kids' dry cleaning. "the post" claims that someone even told them that they should be paying for the items themselves. the mcdonald's have reimbursed the state for some of the items. shares of netflix shot up this morning at wall street -- on wall street, rather, ending with more than a 7% gain that

came after the company announced a deal to run a regional programming from dreamworks animation. that's from the makers of shrek. across the board, it proved to be a good monday. triple digit gains with 110 points. the nasdaq finished up 21 points and s&p 500 closed 20 points higher. san antonio spurs could take home the nba championships. all they need to do is win one more game. the spurs topped miami 114-101 last night in san antonio. they now lead the series against miami 3 games to 2. game 6 tomorrow night down in miami tomorrow night. they last won a championship back in 2007. the heat are trying to defend their title that they took last year. well, it looks gorgeous out there now but storms are

three 7-eleven store owners in virginia are facing charges in connection with a massive

human smuggling raid. the stores are in norfolk, chesapeake, and fortsmith. prosecutors say they stole their paychecks and made them live in boarding houses. the owners face up to 20 years in prison if convicted. a long investigation leads to a multibillion dollar pot bust in southern california. >> police say they found more than 1,000 pot plants in oxnard, east of los angeles. the pot is $3.5 million worth. the pot discovered after a month-long investigation. shocking news out of cleveland this afternoon. during the more than ten years that ariel castro held young women captive in his house, police were called to the same block 1,000 times. plus, why an elderly indiana woman on death row since she was

more it looks like he's a crusader. president obama went to the summit in northern ireland hoping for a trade deal to boost the u.s. economy and cooperation from the g-8 leaders, including russia's vladimir putin to end the war in syria. mr. obama is being dogged by the vast programs of spying and surveillance. today the disclosure that in 2009, at two london summits, u.s. teams helped intercept the leaders' private communications. that's the latest bombshell by snowden who leaked internet programs and then said the u.s. is hacking into chinese computers. and today talked about the 2009 summit intercepts, reducing the 29-year-old's credibility in the minds of many. >> the mortar gets edward snowden slashes out at, the more he looks like he's someone angry

at the united states and wants to hurt the united states as opposed to a whistle blower. >> on a web chat today, snowden reveals what he's claiming is the criminal acts, not u.s. operations against legitimate military targets. the u.s. government is not going to be able to cover this up by jailing or murdering me, says snowden. truth is coming and it cannot be stopped. as the revelations reverberated at the summit, they work to compile proof that the nsa programs have stopped terrorist attacks in the u.s. more of those details could come out tomorrow. again the chief of nsa is set to testify. i'm steve handelsman, news 4. an arizona law is struck down that proforces people to pe their citizenship when they vote. states have the right to

determine if people are qualified to vote. arizona officials says the requirement stops illegal immigrants and nonu.s. citizens from getting on their voter registries. georgia, kansas, and tennessee have similar laws. pete williams will join us live at 5:00 to breakdown what all of that means. today the fbi added two more names to their most wanted list. jose manuel garcia allegedly stabbed a woman in front of her 4-year-old son. he may be hiding out in mexico. fugitive number 500 is walter lee williams and he's wanted for the sexual exploitation of children and traveling abroad for that purpose. a big blow to chicago's effort to curb violence. right now the city is reeling from the deadliest weekend of the year. seven people were killed, 40 more were wounded in separate shootings over the weekend. the youngest victim was only 15. despite the weekend numbers, police say there had been fewer

murders in the city overall this year compared to the same time last year. surprising results where three women were held captive. police officers were on that block 1,000 times during the decade after those women were kidnapped. twice officers even showed up at ariel castro's home. one call was about castro's job as a bus driver. the other time he called to report a car accident on the block. castro has pleaded not guilty in the case. amanda berry, gina dejesus and michelle knight were rescued. paula cooper left a prison in western indiana. she was convicted of stabbing a 78-year-old bible school teacher to death during a 1985 robbery. at 16, cooper was the youngest person on death row at the time.

planet earth may be getting a new neighbor. >> how about that? astronomers say they found evidence of a planet forming about 4.5 billion miles away. the planet is 6 to 28 times larger than earth and it's orbiting a red dwarf star. if it really is a planet in the making, it challenges seven current theories of astronomy. none is located so far from its star. this one is twice as far from its star as pluto is from the sun. >> wow. are you ready for this?

nasa has eight new astronauts. four of the new astronauts are women. the highest number ever selected. >> one woman is a fighter pilot. the other is a helicopter pilot. the new candidates will help lead the first human mission to an asteroid and then on to mars. saving your stem cells. it's an option available now for newborns but the technology is so new that most older children and adults aren't eligible. >> but as chuck henry explains, a common plastic surgical procedure could change all of that. kevin is undergoing liposuction not because he wants to lose inches. >> i never considered liposuction. >> the reason he's doing this, he thinks one day this may save his own life. >> have my own biological insurance policy. >> fat contains more stem cells

controversy at 30,000 feet. american airlines wants to take away our legroom. they can either install thinner seats or move rows closer together to squeeze in more of us in an effort to make more money. there is a way to get around that, though, those cramped quarters. you can pay extra for legroom. airfare is highest in july when many americans take their summer vacations. the oxford english dictionary has more than 823,000 entries in its collection and now among them the word tweet. both the no one and the verb used on twitter, of course, have been added. crowdsourcing was added as well. and a mouseover is an element of a web page that changes when you hover the mouse pointer over it.

also, e-reader, the person who actually reads and the tablet made the cut. many parents admit that they are not doing enough to keep kids safe online. with some schools already out for the summer, children will spend more time than ever on the internet. chris has advice. >> reporter: between parents and children, there is a divide, about safe online practices. 72% of the adults surveys admitted they lacked the time or energy to keep up with their children's activities on the internet. >> and they are letting their kids do whatever they want and they are just assuming that there's no trouble and there's no danger or risks. >> reporter: online safety experts tell parents to engage their kids right now. especially because it's summer when young people tend to be less supervised. >> figure out what the platform

that troubles assemblyman about the state controller's report that uncovers several questionable practices involving improper unemployment payouts, over paid to 118 newly higherre state workers. >> it's great that the state can put people in the workforce but they don't need to get two paychecks every week. >> reporter: $36,000 was paid out to people who are dead. although the labor department says those payments were stopped once they received death notifications. >> for them to be notified when a person is deceased, for example, with the technology that we have today, we ought to be able to cross-reference names without being told that, hey, this person is deceased. >> reporter: the department of labor says they have increasingly increased their fraud fighting measures in recent years and say it was five newly funded auditor positions that allowed them to find
