path. the driver of the car died instantly. the ambulance driver was taken to the hospital. no one else was in the the car. this morning we're hoping to learn more information about an apparent murder suicide. police found a man and woman shot and killed inside the skyline towers apartment complex in falls church yesterday morning. neighbors say they heard screams before the shooting. police have not released the identities of the victims or a motive in the case. police did say it could be a case of domestic violence. we're working to get a comment from d.c. mayor vincent gray on the latest twist in the investigation into his 2010 campaign. this new twist involves the accounting confirm bazilio cobb. it claims some of its employees made illegal contributions for more than a decade. the firm says businessman jeffrey thompson reimbursed those employees. thompson used to be the firm's majority owner. he is also accused of running an illegal shadow campaign to get gray elected. 4:31. today a unique ceremony to mark

bridge, no issues. traveling further into montgomery county, clear trip for you. here's a live look at georgia avenue. again, no issues as you continue towards i-95. i'm back in ten minutes. back over to you. 4:34 now. a security guard will be in court later this summer more allegedly blackmailing a shoplifter for sex. he's accused of telling a suspected shoplifter at the springfield plaza kmart she would go to jail unless she gave him, quote, some sort of sexual favor according to a search warrant our david culver got his hands on. the court documents say she was texting and calling the victim as she was being taken into custody for shoplifting. he offered to get the charges dropped. police arrested him last month at his home. we called kmart for reaction. no one has called us back. sex assault charges could be filed against three football players at the naval academy. they're accused of assaulting a

female midshipman in annapolis last year. it's moving into article 32 proceedings, the equivalent of a grand jury investigation. the family has accused officials of moving too slowly in this case. we are waiting for leaders of the g-8 to release a statement about syria's civil war. they're discussing it at the g-8 summit in northern ireland. president obama is trying to convince other leaders to support his plan to arm syrian rebels. syria was one of the main talking points of president obama's meeting yesterday with russian president vladimir putin. russia has been one of the syrian government's main allies. expect to see more protests. 1,000 demonstrators marched yesterday. things never got out of hand. that may be thanks to the 7,000 police officers there. it is one of the largest security operations ever in northern ireland. the head of the nsa heads back to capitol hill today. keith alexander will tell a

house committee how his agency's secret surveillance program protects americans. what makes today's hearing so unique? it will be open. the house almost never holds an open intense hearing. the man who revealed those surveillance programs to the public is defending his actions. edward snowden answered questions during a web chat yesterday. he says he only revealed what he calls the government's nakedly aggressive criminal acts. he also said being called a traitor by dick cheney is, quote, the highest honor you can give an american. snowden says he is still hiding in hong kong. today marks the start of a two-day meeting by the federal reserve. interest rates are not expected to change, but investors will be looking for any indication that chairman ben bernanke is planning to ease or end the central bank's bond-buying program. the fed started the program to help pull the economy out of recession, and now that the recovery is picking up more steam, experts believe the bank may slow its investment. that deadly fire -- wildfire in colorado now 75% contained. the el paso county sheriff's

office says firefighters are zeroing in on the point of origin now. this fire killed two people and destroyed more than 500 homes near colorado springs. a few people forced from their homes have been allowed to return to see what's left. the cause of the black forest fire is under investigation. and people in new york city dealing with a nightmare morning rush. that's because a long island railroad train derailed in an east river tunnel last night. the train was supposed to be removed overnight. no one was hurt, but the track is closed while crews fix the rail. as a result, 30 to 45 trains are now not -- will not run today. amtrak says trains will run on normal schedule out of penn station, but it also expects delays. in just a few hours, search crews resume their efforts to solve a decades-long mystery. coming up, new developments after agents get a tip about the whereabouts of jimmy hoffa. video from a d.c. street has hard to watch. the dangerous moves that are leading to a backlash against local bikers. and another day where we

3,000 bucks. you know -- >> i love you dearly. >> all right. sorry. 4:41 our time. want to get a look at our forecast. here's a live look outside. 73 degrees here in upper northwest. tom? >> all is calm and it's rather humid. good morning, time for your weather and traffic on the 1s. right now at 4:41, it is mostly cloudy and temperatures are balmy. we're right near 70 degrees throughout most of the region. hometown forecast, la plata, upper 70s to near 80. that's the story throughout much of the region today. we'll have our temperatures by 8:00 near 70. and then by noontime, near 80. in fact, by noontime, we could have showers and thunderstorms around the region moving in from the west. and then throughout the entire region, by midafternoon, there's about a 90% chance we'll have passing showers and thunderstorms. probably not severe. slight chance of a little hail. highs reaching the low 80s midafternoon. then back down to the upper 70s

welcome back. we're following a developing story in michigan now. federal agent says will head out again today to look for jimmy hoffa's remains. yesterday the fbi started digging through a field about 25 miles north of detroit. agents are not saying what items -- or rather what evidence led them there, but we know the feds have been talking with an ailing ex-gangster. the former teamster's boss was believed to have been involved with the mob when he disappeared in 1975. he was last seen in a suburban detroit restaurant. we are hearing from iran's president-elect for the first

time since his win. in a televised speech, rohani said he wants to improve relations with other countries including the u.s. he said tensions with america are, quote, old wounds that must be healed. but he also refused to end the biggest source of those tensions, iran's nuclear enrichment program which he called an inalienable right. he'll officially take office in august. in cuba, the two countries have not had direct mail service since 1963. instead letters have to go through third countries. negotiations have been on told since 2009 over u.s. demands that cuba release subcontractor allen gross. gross is serving a 15-year sentence after giving internet access to a small jewish community. cuban officials say he illegally brought communications equipment into that country. also today joe biden will talk about the administration's plan to reduce gun violence. it's the first time the vice president or president obama has

held a public event on gun control since the senate rejected a plan to expand background checks for gun purchases. the discussion will happen this afternoon at the white house. we will have to wait until september to find out if the fairfax county serial slasher is headed to prison. johnny hpimentel admits he used razors and box cutters to slash women's backsides at stores two years ago. at least nine women were attacked. this morning we're getting a look at the new video showing bicyclists here in d.c. are making dangerous decisions. take a look at this video posted on youtube from last week's d.c. bike party. it's a monthly event where hundreds of cyclists bike to a local bar. watch closely. you can see the bicyclist in the white t-shirt run several red lights and then get hit by a taxi. the cab driver had the right-of-way here. fortunately the bicyclist was not seriously hurt. d.c. bike party organizers say they stress safety before every

event. >> it's just really not representative of everything we reiterate over and over and over, knowing that there are going to be several hundred people that come out to these rides. we know we need to be safe, stay in the right lane. >> organizers say they're going to add more marshals to next month's bike party. this morning students should be able to use their d.c. 1 cards on metro. the agency tells "the washington post" a technical glitch kept many students from using their cards yesterday morning. the issue affected more than 500 students. metro says it identified the problem and fixed it. those students who had to use their own money to get to school will be refunded. today we expect chrysler to formally explain why it refused to recall 3 million jeep suvs. the federal government asked the carmaker for the recall because of the position of the gas tank in grand cherokees and

liberties. they said it could rupture and potentially catch fire. earlier this month chrysler rejected the recall saying the jeeps are safe, and the government was creating a new standard for gas tank strength. today is the deadline for the carmaker to file a formal response. if you have a flight scheduled for your summer vacation, a new survey shows you might be more satisfied with your experience. the american customer satisfaction index found airlines improved 3% since last year in making customers happy. discount airlines jetblue and southwest performed the best, earning scores of 83 and 81% respectively. but compared to other industries, the index says airlines are still pretty dismal. only subscription tv and internet service providers ranked lower. the debate over a controversial voter requirement in arizona may not be over yet. the supreme court struck down the provision which makes voters prove their citizens before casting a ballot. antonin scalia said arizona could get what it wants if it goes through the elections

assistance commission. the state would have to ask to vote it to voter registration forms. if the commission says no, arizona could go back to court and sue. women may be able to start training as army rangers by m - mid-2015 and as navy s.e.a.l.s a year later. the details still being worked out, but they would require women and men to meet the same physical and mental standards to qualify for certain infantry, armor, commando and other front-line positions across the army, navy, air force and marines. a new study found teens who suffer a concussion playing sports had similar symptoms of early alzheimer's disease. researchers at the university of pittsburgh found head injuries appear to trigger a series of degenerative processes in the brain in the areas that are also affected by alzheimer's. they also found patients who suffer a concussion, had trouble filtering out white noise and focus on important sounds. that is an early sign of alzheimer's. researchers looked at brain

scans taken from 60 patients. most of them teenagers. a study found pregnant women who live in areas with high pollution are twice as likely to have a child with autism. researchers looked at data from a long-term nurse's health study that began in 1989. they looked at pollution levels and the women's exposure to it. exposure to diesel particles, lead, mercury and other pollutants are known to have fekt brain function and to affect a developing baby. want to take you to mexico where severe flooding has turned deadly. take a look. this flooding has forced more than 40,000 people from their homes. at least one person has been killed. the water started rising with rain that began to friday. it continued through the weekend. 17 inches fell on this region. it's about 60% of the annual rainfall in just a couple of days. the floods have cut off roads and caused at least $31 million in damage. more rain is expected. we're going to check the weather in our area, see if

we're going to get any rain today. the air is thick. >> storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein is here with some answers. >> it is likely we will get afternoon thundershowers. have an umbrella. don't have any rain around now. we do have a cloudy sky, though, over the washington monument. that's a live view from our city camera. it's 75 steamy degree. the dew point is at 70. whenever it's that high, that's rather sweltering humidity. and the view from space over the last six hours, we've had the cloudiness. there are a few breaks in the clouds around the bay. farther west, we are getting some showers and thundershowers beginning to show up. right now near 70 all around the beltway, the nearby suburbs, low and mid-70s near the chesapeake bay. across the rest of virginia and maryland, some of the rural areas in the 60s. 60s shenandoah valley and the mountains where they're beginning to hear rumbles of thunder out here in central west virginia. the wide view of the storm team

4 radar seeing rain with thunder and lightning. no severe storms. they're drifting east. the close-up view of the radar showing the nearest rain right now is just to the west of charlottesville. it's beginning to move off to the north. should be near laray and perhaps near winchester over the next hour or so. the afternoon hours, here's the timing. all this area in color, these are potential showers and thundershowers. this is by 2:30 in the afternoon. that looks like it's going to be the peak of it between around 2:00 to around 6:00 p.m. then it will quickly move off to the east and will begin to dry out tonight. and we'll have lower humidity moving in tomorrow. here's how we're looking during the afternoon. about a 90% chance of those showers and thundershowers. highs low 80s clearing out tonight. low humidity in place on wednesd wednesday, thursday and friday. delightful weather. 60s in the mornings. afternoon highs in the low and mid-80s. getting hazy, hot and humid over the weekend. slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms each day. i'm back in ten minutes with

another update. dawnella is here with another look at traffic. >> still keeping an eye on the sinkhole. here's what's happening. if you're traveling southbound connecticut avenue, when you get to west kirke street, you'll be forced into the northbound lanes. northbound from chevy chase circle to west kirke street, it will be carrying north and south volume. yesterday there was construction in the area and crews suspected that's what caused the sinkhole. no word yet on when your travel lanes will be open. keep that in mind if you're traveling connecticut avenue today, i would recommend even this early to use an alternate route because it is quite slow even at this time of morning to get by that sinkhole there. down i-95 in virginia, your travel lanes are open. no issues from dumfries to the beltway. today secretary of defense chuck hagel will dedicate a korean war exhibit at the pentagon. that exhibit honors all the veterans of the korean war and their families. it will include pictures, video

welcome back. at 4:58. a new facebook initiative may me increase the number of organ donors in the u.s. researchers at johns hopkins university collaborated with facebook to add organ donation to a user's profile. when someone changes their status to organ donor, they are given a link to register with their state. they saw the number of new online organ donation registrations go up more than 20 fold. researchers now plan to study whether this new facebook status
