in the air. and it's in the low to mid-70s southern maryland right near the chesapeake bay. storm team 2 radar, this area in green, a few sprinkles of light rain moving into virginia out of the west. a few clusters of thunder and lightning in central west virginia. some of this rain that's getting a little closer to washington, the storminess, any thunder and lightning not arriving in the shenandoah valley for another four hours. maybe in about nouranother 6 1/ hours, it will be south of winchester near fredericksburg. by noontime, we'll probably have showers and thundershowers. between now and then, 70s with steamy humidity and a lot of cloudiness. a look at the timing on the storminess during the afternoon in ten minutes. danella looks at traffic now. good morning. >> good morning. checking on i-95, delays in virginia. that's because near the weigh station here, the hov lanes, they were closed.

at the live desk, news 4. we are following a developing story in afghanistan this morning. a large explosion there killed at least three people. that as nato forces turned over security to the national army and police. that explosion happened in kabul just miles away from the handover ceremony. police say a suicide car bomber targeted a convoy. three civilians died. afghan president hamid karzai called the security transition an historic moment for his country. the ceremony happened at the new national defense university. all foreign combat troops are scheduled to leave that country by the end of next year. right now we are waiting for leaders of the g-8 countries to release a statement about syria's civil war. this is video from minutes ago when the leaders posed for a family photo in northern ireland. president obama is trying to convince the other leaders to support his plan to arm syrian rebels. syria was one of the main talking points of president obama's meeting yesterday with russian president vladimir putin. russia has been one of the

syrian government's main allies. and president obama is pledging another $300 million in humanitarian aid for syria and its neighbors. most of that money will go to countries that are taking care of syrian refugees. the u.s. will now have sent about $800 million on relief efforts in syria. that is more aid than any other country. today the head of the nsa heads back to capitol hill. general keith alexander will tell a house committee how his agency's secret surveillance program protects americans. it will be open to the public. that is unusual. the house almost never holds an open intelligence hearing. sex assault charges could be filed today against three football players at the naval academy. they're accused of assaulting a female midshipman in annapolis last year. the case is moving into article 32 proceedings, the military equivalent of a grand jury investigation. the family has accused officials of moving too slowly in this

case. and a developing story in michigan now at 6:04. federal agents are heading out again today to look for jimmy hoffa's remains. the fbi is digging through a field of about 25 miles north of detroit. agents are not saying what new evidence led them there, but we know the feds have been talking to an ailing ex-gangster who says he knows where the body is buried. the former teamsters boss was believed to be involved with the mob when he disappeared in 1975. he was last seen in a suburban detroit restaurant. today secretary of defense chuck hagel will dedicate a korean war exhibit at the pentagon. that exhibit honors all of the veterans of the korean war and their families. it will include pictures, videos and weapons used during that war. the exhibit will be part of the pentagon tour as well. the defense department's 60th anniversary of the korean war commemoration committee will honor the service of korean war veterans for the next three years. you can expect delays if

hop on a plane for a summer getaway. a new survey says you are more likely to be satisfied with your

flying experience. the american customer satisfaction index found airlines improved 3% since last year in making customers happy. discount airlines jetblue and southwest performed the best. earning scores of 83 and 81% respectively. but compared to other industries, the index says airlines are still pretty dismal. only subscription tv and internet service providers rank lower than airlines. well, today is chrysler's last chance to formally explain why it refused to recall nearly 3 million suvs. the federal government asked the carmaker to recall some older jeep grand cherokees and liberties because of the position of the gas tank. investigators said the tank could rupture in a rear-end crash and potentially catch fire. earlier this month, though, chrysler rejected the recall saying the jeeps are safe and the government was creating a new standard for gas tank strength. just about 6:11. time for weather and traffic on the 1s. starting off a little muggy out there. >> that's right. to remember team 4 meteorologist tom kierein here with a look at

breaking news at 6:14. violent clashes broke out in rio de janeiro as more than 100,000 protesters took to the streets in at least eight brazilian cities. the protests started last week over a 10 cent increase in bus and subway fares. but they stem from frustrations over poor transportation, health services and education. the unrest is raising security concerns across the country. brazil hosts a visit from pope francis next month, the world cup in a year and the olympics in 2016. 15 after the hour now. firefighters getting closer to pinpointing the origin of that deadly wildfire in colorado. the black forest fire near colorado springs now 75%

contained. that fire has killed two people and destroyed more than 500 homes already. a few people forced from their homes have been allowed to return to see what's left. the cause of that fire under investigation. however, firefighters believe -- rather they are not ruling out a lightning strike here. right now torrential rain and flooding has killed at least 58 people in india. take a look at some dramatic pictures showing a building slowly being swept away. the high water stranded about 58,000 people in different parts of that area. more rain is expected in the next two days. today cuba and the u.s. will resume discussions on restarting direct mail service between the two nations. the two countries haven't had it since 1963. instead letters have to go through a third country. negotiations have been on hold since 2009 over u.s. demands that cuba released jailed potomac subcontractor allen

gross who is serving a 15-year sentence in prison. he says he was trying to bring internet access to a small jewish community in cuba. officials there say gross illegally brought communications equipment into that country to spy. > the chief nuclear envoy is g in china to talk about the nuclear program. he is expected to meet with the chinese foreign minister tomorrow. the north has once against offered high-level talks with the u.s. the state department says the north would need to take credible steps toward giving up its nuclear weapons before an open dialogue can happen. the north has threatened nuclear war against the u.s. and south korea. we may be getting a clearer picture of what the jury will look like for george zimmerman's murder trial. so far the judge has asked 32 potential jurors to return for another round of questioning. we can't tell you their names, but we can tell you the majority are white. the pool is mostly female, and that pool could grow today. a seventh day of jury selection will begin in about four hours. a fund dedicated to the boston marathon bombing victims has already received more than 200 claims for payment, and they expect more. the one fund has more than $50

million to hand out. victims had to submit applications by saturday to be eligible. but the fund is handling all requests on a case-by-case basis. they say they will prioritize deaths, double amputees and victims with brain damage, but everyone who submits a claim will likely be compensated. they hope to start sending out checks jill 1st. three people were killed and more than 260 injured in those blasts. 6:17 now. smoking seems to be declining. the national smoking rate has dropped to 18%. that rate generally has fallen but stalled about 20 or 21% for the last seven years. a spokesperson for the centers for disease control says scientists are analyzing the 2012 study to determine why the rate dropped. last year the cdc launched a graphic anti-smoking advertising campaign. smoking is the leading cause of preventable illness and death in the u.s. 6:18 now. the oxford english dictionary is finally recognizing that tweeting isn't just for the

birds. the 2013 version of the dicti ' dictionary included social media usage. it's actually ahead of the curve. it usually takes a new word ten years to make it into the dictionary. but the chief editor of the dictionary says the word "tweet," quote, seems to be catching on. yeah, you think so, aaron? twitter launched in july 2006. >> how about that. you know, a lot of excitement in fairfax county this morning. today is the last day of school there. we're talking about fairfax, i want to thank the mount vernon class of 2013 for inviting many he to graduation. i gave the commencement address last friday. these students are moving on to virginia tech, northwestern, several military branches as well. there was a special moment for a student whose father surprised him just in time to see him get his diploma. you see the hug and everybody trying to hold back tears. he was completely clueless his father was going to show up. >> what a wonderful surprise and wonderful moment for all the students. >> i want to thank the class.

could bring thunderstorms to our area in the coming hours. >> storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein is here with what we can expect. >> you see the storminess on the left. that's had a history of damage around knoxville, tennessee, wind damage. it is weakening. as we look at radar, it is showing these showers and thundershowers getting closer to us. right now the leading edge of this rain is now coming into the shenandoah valley and down toward richmond and charlottesville. heavier downpours with a little thunder and lightning way out here in west virginia still about 5 1/2 hours away of coming in. that's going to be around noontime, maybe early afternoon. we'll have that moving toward the metro area. right now it's a steamy morning. upper 60s to right around 70 degrees. most of the region. and here's how your tuesday is looking. we will have our temperatures stay in the 70s through 8:00,

immigrants here illegally. bob goodlat says it must enforce immigration laws. the house is expected to vote today on a bill that would ban almost all abortions after a fetus reaches 20 weeks. it is expected to pass the house but likely has no future after that. the democratic-led senate says they will ignore it, and the white house has threatened to veto it. but it could lay the groundwork for future challenges of late-term abortions. this morning, a look at new video that shows bicyclists making dangerous decisions. take a look at this video posted on youtube. it's a monthly event where hundreds of cyclists bike to a local bar. watch closely. you can see the bicyclist in the white t-shirt run several red lights and then get hit by a taxi. the cab driver had the right-of-way here. fortunately the bicyclist was not seriously hurt. d.c. bike party organizers say

they stress safety before every event. >> it's just really not representative of everything we reiterate over and over and over, knowing that there are going to be several hundred people that come out to these rides. we know we need to be safe, stay in the right lane. don't ride ahead of marshals. >> organizers say they're going to add more marshals to next month's bike party. this morning one person is dead following a crash involving an ambulance in calvert county. chopper 4 flew over the scene in prince frederick, maryland. the county sheriff's office says a car crossed the ambulance's path. the driver of the car died instantly. the ambulance driver was taken to the hospital. no one else was inside the car. we'll have to wait until september to find out if the fairfax county serial slasher is heading to prison. johnny pimentel pled guilty yesterday. he could spend up to seven years

in prison. he admits he used razors and box cutters to slash women's rear ends at stores two years ago. at least nine women were attacked. george hughley's attorneys say they're happy with how their client's appeal process is going. the virginia court of appeals ruled on friday that hughley's attorneys can argue three additional issues to try and get his murder conviction overturned. they claim hughley did not get a fair trial. a jury convicted the former uva lacrosse player last year of killing his ex-girlfriend, yeardley love, more than three years ago. a case involving more than 75 arsons along virginia's eastern shore will head to a grand jury. a judge ruled that there is enough evidence against charles smith iii and tanya bundick to have that case continue. police believe the two are responsible for most of 77 wildfires in vacant buildings since last fall. according to court documents, smith told investigators he set 52 fires and bundick set 15.

this morning we know why there was so much damage in montgomery county from the strong storms last week. a tornado that touched down traveled more than 17 miles. that makes it the longest recorded tornado track in maryland history. the funnel cloud touched down in north potomac on thursday afternoon. and it stayed on the ground for nearly 20 minutes and finally ended in burtonsville. it was rated an ef-0, the weakest category, but a tornado is a tornado. >> that's right. and especially in our area, that's a big deal. let's check the forecast for today. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein. what should we expect? >> we could get storms later today. no tornadoes. this is the gray sky over the potomac now. about an hour ago we had a spectacular sunrise, but clouds have closed in since then, and we've got steamy humidity in place. radar showing a cluster of some showers and thundershowers way

look at what most americans think should happen to edward snowden. this is a "usa today" poll. 54% of people think that he should be prosecuted. just 38% think he shouldn't. right now we are waiting for leaders of the g-8 countries to release a statement about syria's civil war. this is video from just minutes ago when the leaders posed for a family photo at the g-8 summit in northern ireland. president obama is trying to convince the other leaders to support his plan to arm syrian rebels. syria was one of the main talking points of president obama's meeting yesterday with russian president vladimir putin. russia has been one of the syrian government's main allies. and president obama is pledging another $300 million in humanitarian aid for syria and its neighbors. most of that money will go to countries that are taking care of syrian refugees. the u.s. will now have sent about $800 million on relief efforts in syria. that is more aid than any other country. 14 before the hour.

a developing story in michigan. any minute now federal agents will start digging for jimmy hoffa's remains. a live picture from the scene. actually videotape. fbi getting ready to dig in a field about 25 miles north of detroit. agents are not saying what new evidence led them there, but we know that the feds have been talking to an ailing ex-gangster who says he knows where the body is buried. the former teamsters boss was believed to have been involved with the mob when he disappeared in 1975. he was last seen in a suburban detroit restaurant. we're learning more details about a rant by a passenger on a united airlines flight from hong kong to new jersey. witnesses say the man was shouting about national security. the cia and edward snowden on board that flight. one passenger also said the man claimed that he was being poisoned and that his life was in danger. fellow flyers eventually tackled him and bound his hands and feet for the rest of that 15-hour flight. the plane landed safely in new jersey, and the man is being

evaluated this morning. police arrested a 35-year-old man in connection with a murder in shenandoah county. claude schafer jr. is now charged with the murder in the death of 65-year-old phyllis klein in edinburgh. police found her body sunday morning after members of her church went to check on her. she played piano at walker's chapel church of brethren. schafer is being held without bond. metro tells us it is testing the emergency call system on a train after passengers say they were not able to report a fight. metro says two men started fighting on a red line train about 6:30 last night. that fight spilled out onto the platform. this was at the woodley park station. one passenger we talked to says she saw several people press the emergency call button. there was no response, though. metro does think there was some kind of communication between passengers and the operator because the operator was able to notify police. the fight was over by the time they arrived. you might remember the i-team raised concerned about

emergency buttons this past spring. calls showed 170 malfunctions happened in the last two years. metro told us in march that train cars are sent for inspection after every complaint. the transit agency also considering posting signs inside trains to make sure passengers know what to expect when they make a call. a security guard will be in court later this summer for allegedly blackmailing a shoplifter for sex. 29-year-old jalani is accused of telling a suspected shoplifter at the springfield plaza kmart that she would go to jail unless she gave him, quote, some sort of sexual favor according to a search warrant obtained by david culver. the incident happened earlier this month. court documents say he was texting and calling the victim as she was taken into custody for shoplifting. he offered to get the charges dropped. police arrested him last monday at his lorton home. we called kmart for reaction. so far no one has called us back. 6:49. news 4 is live at breaking news

in northeast washington. to tony, what's going on? >> reporter: we're still trying to get information on this. we're at fifth and quincy. a sense of the scene, you see a large police presence. what we do know, around 6:00 a.m., police responded to the call of a shooting. we have not confirmed that. we actually haven't gotten any information from the metropolitan police department. as you can see, we have a larger than usual police presence. when i was down there about ten minutes ago, i was talking to some of the detectives on the scene. they wouldn't give me any information. so if there was a shooting or not, we're not quite sure. we'll stick around and see what becomes of this. they do have the entire block here roped off. it was just that little section by a row home a little earlier. then they moved the crime scene back. they also moved us back as well. again, around 6:00 a.m., we do know that npd responded to fifth and quincy for the report of a shooting. again, we have not confirmed any of this. we'll continue to stay on top of this. if we get any information before the end of the show, we'll bring
