the captain for asiana airlines was still training on the job. lee kang-kook only had 43 hours flying the boeing 777. asiana airlines say it takes 60 hours to be considered fully qualified. he had never landed that type o aircraft at san francisco international before. tonight the national transportation safety board plans to interview the four pilots who were on the plane. we go live to san francisco where we heard from first responders today. jennifer? >> reporter: we heard a lot tod today. planes taking off and landing behind me of asiana flight 214 that's still sitting there on the tarmac as ntsb investigators are looking at the wreckage trying to figure out what went wrong. >> you can see the plane was on its belly. so we just, we just rushed, went right straight to it.

>> help came fast to survivors of this deadly crash landing saturday. first responders overwhelmed by number of people able to help themselves before they cleared the plane. >> i was satisfied. i was -- i was happy. i felt like there was -- there was nobody left on that plane. >> reporter: there were two fatif fatalities. >> one of the two might have been contacted by our apparatus. >> we need to work, conduct interviews and let the coroner do their work. >> reporter: the coroner has not determined the cause of death for that victim. investigators are sift through what remains of the boeing 777. the current focus of investigators is on the low air speed.

>> about three seconds prior to impact the flight data recorder recorded its lowest speepd of 103 knots. >> reporter: also under scrutiny the pilot's experience. south korea's transportation ministry said one pilot was in training and had less than 50 hours of experience on the 777. the survivors will be key to the crash probe as ntsb investigators hope to speak with as many of them as they can. >> the operator of the aircraft is a sfufr. we have the flight data recorder was saved intact. the cockpit voice recorder was saved intact. we have all of the tools to put an investigation together. >> reporter: the ntsb plans to talk to the pi lots about who was in command when the incident happened. because this is a comparatively quiet time for aviation mishaps historically speaking experts say the ntsb will throw massive resources at this investigation.

they hope to get a lot of answers and relatively quickly. breaking news right now in the area where a little boy was reported missing in northeast d.c. police have just arrived in an area off west virginia avenue there. pat collins there now. what's going on? >> reporter: there appears to be break in the search of 7-year-old michael kingsbury. moments ago a flury of activity here, police descending on the scene, pushing everybody back. it appears to be a focus on a car, car that is parked behind a building about two doors away from michael kingsbury's home. we were back there. we saw police going through the back of the car, searching the back of the car, paramedics were called to the scene. they were approaching the car. it appears that they may have found something perhaps even this young man who has been missing now since around 9:00 on

sunday morning. michael kingsbury, 7 years old, autistic boy last seen at 9:00 around his house at 1709 west virginia avenue. he was only wearing some pull up diapers and a red shirt and no shoes when he was last seen. there's been an incredible search for this boy. police, firefighters, citizens passing out flyers, going up alleys looking to and from to try to find him and then apparently maybe ten minutes ago now this big break. i mean police came here from every which way and they descend on the alley. again, the focus is a car in the back of 1705 west virginia avenue. it appears in the back seat of that car is where investigators are, paramedics have been called to that scene. we have no confirmation on what they found in that car but it

appears to be a breakdown in the search for 7-year-old michael kingsbury, missing now since 9:00 sunday morning. we're here and we'll keep you apprised of what happens. jim, back to you. our weather now. it's rained on and off a few times today and we could see more rain tonight. storm team 4 meteorologist veronica johnson is in for doug tonight with the details. >> our temperatures may have gone up but it feels better right now than it did earlier today and that's because of some of that rain that's moved through. it's really helped to take the humidity down. the green that's moving southeast down i-95 that's what provided with us the relief. these are moving away from our area headed towards northern neck. meanwhile temperatures across the area right now heat index what you want feels like 88 takoma park and d.c., 85 in germantown. 93 in leesburg, virginia.

you got 88 around warrenton. 90 in culpeper. still steamy, sticky, down to the south and as far as our opportunity to see more showers it's only isolated but after tomorrow morning we could be looking at more storms around here and some serious storms at the end of the week which i'll have more details on coming up. tonight a mother from northern virginia whose baby died in a sweltering suv after she left him there all day on friday has been arrested and was arraigned today on a felony child neglect charge. the woman still remains in jail. police say she forgot that her 8-month-old son was in the back seat while she was at work all day. northern virginia reporter david culver has more from another parent who says her child died after the same mistake. >> reporter: a wife, a mother now potentially a felon, this as zoraita magali conde hernadez, this is her mugshot the

32-year-old mother from alexandria was in arlington court today. she's accused in the death of her 8-month-old son. court documents explain what happened last friday. 9:00 in the morning hernandez heads to work her son in the back seat in his car seat. she goes in and starts her work day. at 2:30 she gets back in her car to pick up her 2-year-old daughter at daycare. an hour and a half later she notices her son in his car seat unconscious. she rushed him to the hospital. it was too late. his body's temperature 108 degrees. >> i was one of those parents that said you know what that could never happen to me. >> reporter: we talked to one who could understand hernandez's situation. in 2007 she left her own son in a hot car. he too died. >> when they tell you i'm sorry your child has died and you realize it was your fault, that feeling never goes away. from that nightmare, that day, you had a lapse in your

responsibility to your child that never goes way. >> reporter: fairfax county police says use this tragedy as a teaching moment and have who are help remind you like your child's daycare. >> tell them in advance that are if i'm not going to bring my child will call you first. >> reporter: advice that could save a young life but for hernandez it comes too late. in arlington, i'm david culver, news 4. >> hernandez is due back in court on wednesday for a bond hearing. trial date has been set for august. stand down and support the chief that's the message today from a small group of protesters outside the d.c. council chamber. the group made up of community activists say d.c. fire chief is making things better and they say recent council report that found the department to be understand staffed and over budget was politically motivated. >> those problems were not created by the chief. and you have individuals who have been here and they are

resisting change. the chief is trying to improve up on those problems and make things better and he's being met with resistance and we're saying enough is enough. >> the chief has declined any formal interview but recently told nbc 4's mark segraves despite a call for his resignation he's not going anywhere. >> d.c. council is taking new steps to increase the powers of the ethics office. that office can odd mondayish city workers even if a formal complaint is not filed. tom sherwood reports now. it's a move to head off corruption before it begins. >> the ethics office is still pretty new but is trying to curb corruption in any way it can. guilt ju pleas in the federal probe of vincent grape's tweet in campaign for mayor. three council members plead guilty to other federal crimes. more charges are expected. but not all ethics and corruption cases rise to this level.

d.c. council member mcduffy is approving legislation allowing the ethics office to secretly admonish employees for my northbound violations. >> there's an ethics cloud over the city. we need to get people to participate. >> city ethics director said secret admonishes are posted on his website without identifying information. he said the goal is to curb improper behavior before it mushrooms and to make guidelines clear to workers. >> we can take quick action. it provides the ability for a contrite official or government employee to take responsibility quickly for a minor infraction and to, to address it quickly. >> the district has about 34,000 city workers plus elected official, all subject to tougher ethics rules. but some employees are reluctant to put their names on formal

explosions. vice president joe biden will go arizona tomorrow to attend a memorial to honor 19 fallen firefighters. yesterday the bodies of those firefighters made their way home from the medical examiner's office in phoenix back to the town of prescott. the firefighters died fighting a wildfire a bit more than a week ago now. tonight that fire is said to be about 90% contained. now to a developing story out of egypt. that country's interim president plans to amend the constitution in egypt. i want comes as tension rise over those for and against ousted president mohamed morsi. 50 people were killed today in clashes with the egyptian army. nbc's brian mooar joins us with the latest on the u.s.'s take on this crisis. brian? >> reporter:s the violence gets out of control in egypt officials here are debating options and one very important label. more than four dozen killed and

400 wounded in a clash between egypt's military and supporters of ousted president mohamed morsi. that bloodshed threatens to derail negotiations to assemble a new civilian government in egypt and rat checkpoints up the pressure on the obama administration which is struggling not to take sides. >> we don't support a group, we don't support a party. we support a process. >> reporter: a democratic process. monetary support, $1.5 billion in u.s. aid is riding on a single word. coup. if what happened in egypt is a coup under u.s. law aid has to be withdrawn and the united states faces a diplomatic dilemma. >> whether or not cutting off the aid at this point would only deepen the crisis and send egypt into a further meltdown. >> reporter: republican senator john mccain is leading calls for the white house to use aid as a lever to force egypt towards fair and free elections.

but a policy expert says egypt's future will be determined by egyptians. >> the u.s.'s role is minimal. but, the biggest thing for the u.s. is to avoid having egypt turn into a failed state in the middle of civil war. that's the worst of all option. >> reporter: for egypt, a turbulent transition. finding an interim leader is the first step in what cube months long road towards free elections. we have breaking news in the area where a little boy has been reported missing. it's in northeast d.c. police officers rushed to a scene off west virginia avenue there. pat collins has our report. pat? >> reporter: jim, sources are telling me now that police found the body of a young boy in the back of a car in the rear of 1705 west virginia avenue. they believe that's the body of

michael kingsbury, the 7-year-old whose been missing from this neighborhood now since sunday around 9:00. the focus of the investigation, indeed, is that car. and now about 15 minutes ago police converged on the scene. i'm told that a police officer who was involved in the search simply walked back into this parking area behind the building and looked in the back and saw the body of the young boy there. that's what resulted in this convergence of police and emergency personnel on the scene. the cause of death here is unknown. now homicide detectives are on the scene investigating. there are paramedics here on the scene. they are gathering information and evidence as well. but all we know now is that a body of a young boy found in the car behind a building on west virginia avenue they believe it's the body of 7-year-old

michael kingsbury, missing from this neighborhood since 9:00 on sunday morning last seen wearing just a pull up diaper and a red shirt, no shoes. his mother has been frantic. there's bean massive search in this neighborhood. flyers passed out all up and down the street and then this afternoon, this ann a little after 5:30 this discovery of this boy in the car behind the building and now the investigation into his death begins. jim, back to you. >> thanks, pat. pat collins reporting. if there are any updates on that story we'll share them. veronica johnson is here with a look at our weather. we got a bit of a break on the temperatures. >> always nice when you get the early rain on a summer day and some cloud cover too. we have two more nasty days with heat to deal with. let's take a look outside. we got clearing skies from earlier showers and even a few thunder showers we had move

through. as far as our high temperature goes today it got up to 87 degrees. just shy of that 90 degree mark after starting out at 73. your average high 89 degrees. we got a starry night too coming up with mostly clear sky and a "new moon". we'll have the big moon light getting in the way of seeing the stars. it will be fairly clear overnight. we're left with most of our cloud cover off to the east and down the south through areas of the northern neck. you can see that rain too making its way southeast ward. the busy stuff south fredericksburg. we got one lonely little shower that's out there too. this one making its way into loudoun county, so it's moving southeastward. showers in bluemont and may hold together enough to make its way down into central loudoun county, across maybe 15 there,

but as i said down to the south that's where most of our action is. tomorrow we have a better chance of seeing some showers and thunderstorms. 87 degrees again, a lot of sunshine out there right now. by 7:00 we're looking at mostly sunny sky. 82 your temperature. then a nice evening 9:00, 80 we'll drop to 77 degrees under mostly clear sky by 11:00 p.m. it's still a bit muggy. here's a look at our current heat index, what it feels like. we cooled off in some areas feeling like 85 in gaithersburg. sticky and steamy 92 around waldorf and la plata and still holding around 90 in leesburg. now the future, show you what you can expect tomorrow morning. clouds pushing back in by the time we get to 8:00, 9:00 a.m. partly cloudy by then. expecting more showers and even a few thunderstorms coming our way. mainly during the afternoon tomorrow. so keep your umbrellas handy for yet another day.

in fact another three days as you'll see. 30% chance of seeing that thunder shower move through with high humidity and i think very high humidity coming our way mid-week wednesday and also on thursday. we'll get afternoon showers and even some thunderstorms but the possibility of severe weather on thursday. here's a look at tomorrow morning start, 71 gaithersburg, 73 degrees la plata to areas around stafford, alexandria starting out at 73. the high tomorrow this time a little higher getting up to 89 to 90 degrees with again your showers and storms coming i think early afternoon right through the late afternoon tomorrow. so 90 for tomorrow the high. wednesday 93. we'll be a little cooler on wednesday but wednesday is when the weather front will be coming into our area. we could see strong storms and looking at severe storms around the area with the main threat being that of high winds throughout our area possibly even getting some real heavy rain in a short period of time

today the jury in the george zimmerman trial heard from trayvon martin's father. trayvon martin was the victim of a shooting in florida sometime ago. the father took the stand and answered questions about who he thought he heard screaming in 911 calls on the night that his son was killed. jay gray joins us now from the courthouse in sanford, florida where the trial is now in its third week.

jay? >> reporter: an important and busy day. the first day of presentation, full day of presentation from the defense and you're right. focused that now familiar 911 call but for the first time we heard from trayvon martin's father about what he said he heard on that recording. tracy martin was at the center of an intense and emotional day of testimony. >> best friend in life and to have him gone is tragic. >> reporter: trayvon martin's father said initially he wasn't sure who was screaming in the background of the 911 call the night his son was killed. >> didn't tell them no that wasn't trayvon, i kind of -- i think i pushed away from the be table and just kind of shook my head and said i can't tell. >> so your words were i can't tell. >> something to that effect but i any severe said no that wasn't my son's voice. >> reporter: george zimmerman told police it's his voice supreming for help.

he's pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the case saying he acted in self-defense. martin's testimony directly contradicts what police investigators told the jury earlier in the day. >> i inquired as if that was in fact his son yelling for help. >> what was his response? >> it was more of a verbal and nonverbal. he looked away and under his breath as i interpreted it said no. >> reporter: a second officer said martin's response was painful but clear. >> okay. mr. martin's response? >> that it was not his son. >> i think earlier you said he put his head down or something? >> yes. he was crying and he was sad. he had his head down. >> reporter: during his cross-examination by the state, martin said it was that emotion that was his focus the first time he heard the recording at police headquarters two days after his son was killed. >> what was going through your

mind when you were listening to that? >> basically what i was listening to, i was listening to my son's last cry for help. i was listening to his life being taken. and i was trying to come to grips that trayvon was here no more. >> reporter: as he continued his testimony martin told jurors now he's certain it's his son's voice screaming for help just before the fatal shot was fired. yeah, now tracy martin's testimony followed several of george zimmerman's friends who were called as character witnesses. they all said they heard zimmerman's voice in the background of that call. that's the latest live here from the seminole county courthouse. i'm jay gray. back to you. zimmerman has sudden nbc universal the parent company of this stages for defamation. the company has strongly denied those allegations. breaking news right now in

the area where the beefed missing 7-year-old has been found. news 4 pat collins is live with more on what's happening there. pat? >> reporter: it appears the search for michael kingsbury has come to a tragic end. in the back of a car in the back of a building off west virginia avenue, about two doors down from where he lived. michael kings bur injuries a 7-year-old autistic boy went missing around 9:00 sunday morning. he was wearing at the time only diapers and possibly a red shirt. there have been a massive searches in this neighborhood since. sources say he was found this afternoon in the back of a car in the rear of this building by a police officer who was out looking for him. it was a focus on this car for some time. now after that discovery which now appears to be about oh, maybe 40 minutes ago police converged on the area, pushed

pat collins, news 4. >> thanks, pat. tonight an 18-year-old has been charged with second-degree murder. that in connection with a deadly stabbing at a dinner party. the prince george's county police arrested the man for the murder. tonight a judge in virginia is considering whether embezzlement charges against the governor's former chef should be thrown out. todd schneider says the state's attorney general who filed the charges has a conflict of interest. northern virginia reporter julie carey reports from richmond. >> i am not permitted to talk to you. >> reporter: a gag order means defense attorney steve benjamin has to do his talking inside the courtroom on behalf of his client todd schneider he's asked the judge to toss out the four

counts counts of embezzlement. schneider's attorney argues the ag's office head by ken cuccinelli sacrificed snider to try to cover up other wrongdoing. a special prosecutor is now hand technology case and says there's enough evidence to move ahead. a judge will decide by week's end. >> i'm prohibited from making any additional statements. >> reporter: someone was talking outside the court, an attorney who is now advising governor mcdonnell about,000 navig how t the political storm. his analysis -- >> every family sends their children back with some food to tide them over. when you're talking about $25 or

so in food to tide you over as you go back i think every family treats their children like that. i think the first family is entitled to treat their children like that. >> reporter: still troy says the governor is reimbursing the state for the college bound food. the chef's attorney had one more request for the judge today, he asked that she lift the gag order that prevents him from talking to reporters outside the courtroom about the case. he complained that attorney general ken cuccinelli and his campaign for governor is talking in spite of the order and that puts his client he says at a disadvantage. the conduct campaign issued this statement saying the campaign respond a series of questions from "the washington post". however, we are not going to respond to these gloria all tread-like allegations which steve benjamin routinely makes. the judge left the gag order in place and said she would northern the situation. if those charges are not dismissed the trial would be held in october. that would be just few weeks before statewide elections.
