now at 11:00, a city and community heartbroken and wondering how a young autistic boy is found dead just a few yards from his front door. people are asking why the discovery wasn't made sooner. new video of the moments after the plane crashed in san francisco over the weekend. investigators are talking to the pilot about what happened just before impact. a new look for the national mall. how long we'll see the washington monument glowing over d.c. to the tragic discovery of the body of a 7-year-old awe tiftdic boy in northeast washington. >> it's a discovery leading to as many questions as answers. police found the body of michael kingsbury in a car parked in an alley behind his family's home on with west virginia avenue.

it's an area thought to have been searched twice already. the boy's mother spoke for the first time since the boy's body was found. we have more on her reaction. jackie? >> reporter: jim, a few minutes ago, michael's mother came out and told us that there was something that she wanted to say. in a voice that shook with emotion, catrikatrina kingsbury expressed her gratitude to the many people who helped look for her son. >> i'm coming out to thank everybody in the community for coming out to assist and find my child. i thank everybody -- everybody, thank you, please, thank you. >> reporter: police officers started running -- >> go this way -- >> reporter: pushing news crews and bystander back from the 1700 block. the terrible discovery was made in a car. parked on private property, a car police say had no license plates on it.

officers had to break a window to get in and recover the body of 7-year-old michael kingsbury. after being examined, the car was towed away by police. >> i just feel so awful, heartbroken. >> reporter: the question on everyone's minds is how the little boy who suffers from autism was found in a car that is believed to have been examined but not opened by at least two sets of searchers. michael's family told officers they, too, had looked in the car early on because he'd gotten into an empty car once before when he walked away from home for about an hour. >> one of the things we need to figure out, first of all, is when exactly did the child get into the car. you know, it's too early to determine whether or not somebody missed something or not. obviously, we'll look into all of that. >> reporter: gaston mcveigh, an autism activist and neighbor, helped search with d.c. fire and ems volunteers this morning. >> i believe they did the best that they could under the circumstances.

where we can get in and search cars, look into cars, they got the vin numbers, they have a list of all the places that we have searched. >> reporter: neighborhood-elected leaders are trying to set up a funeral fund to spare the family that worry. you never expect to bury a child. they didn't. they need help. they're trying to set up a found do that. reporting live in northeast washington, jackie bensen, news4. >> thank you. the story one that has touched people across the city, and that includes those who serve on the d.c. council. kenyan mcduff whoa represents the trinidad area where that happened said on twitter, "we've experienced a tragedy today in our community." muriel bowser, council member, tweeted, "my heart breaks for little michael kingsbury and his family." marion barry wrote, "my heart and all of my prayers go out to his family." investigators are talking to the crew of the members of the asiana airlines, the one that crash landed in san francisco.

issue number one is the plane's speed and why it was coming in so slowly. jim handly's at the live desk with new video and new information about asiana airlines' president. jim? >> reporter: that's right. we just learned minutes ago that the president of the airlines will travel to san francisco tomorrow to meet with his crew members and could face possible questions himself from the northeast. now let's go to that new video taken in the second after saturday's crash. you can see the emergency chutes deploying from the aircraft. those chute s as we know were te routes to safety for many of the people who survived the crash. one that became unavoidable because of the plane's lack of speed in the final seconds of the flight, leading the plane to come up short of the runway and cartwheel after touching down. now less than a minute before the crash, the boeing 777 was at an altitude of 1,000 feet flying at a speed of 149 knots. investigators say the critical

point came about 34 seconds before the crash when the plane flying significantly lower went down. now the speed continued to drop until the plane basically stalled. the ntsb says there were no system warnings of a stall until just four seconds before the crash. we'll have to await the results of the interviews with the pilots to see if their actions played any role in the crash. although much has been made about the fact that the pilot at the controls was making his first attempt at landing a 777 into sfo. at the live desk, i'm jim handly. hundreds of children and parents in northern virginia are remembering a baltimore rachbts cheerleader who was killed -- ravens cheerleader who was killed in a crash. his legacy will be felt far from the football field. >> reporter: mar keepa campbell cheers at infinity all stars practice in fairfax, praying tribute to her coach, 27-year-old dion bagby. he died in a motorcycle crash in frederick, maryland, friday, and

recently became a cheerleader with the baltimore ravens. >> it's just really heartbreaking to know that he died. >> reporter: moments later her mother gives her a hug. >> he was like a big brother to her. >> reporter: a big brother and cheerleading coach to 100 kids at infinity over the past three years. he was driving his motorcycle to pennsylvania to work with athletes at a cheerleading camp when he collided with a car. >> dion was an amazing guy. great coach and even better friend. >> reporter: in a statement, the baltimore ravens say, "this is such sad news, and the entire ravens family is in mourning over dion's passing. our thoughts and prayers are with dion's family and friends." >> he tried out the year before and wasn't able to do it. and this year he tried out again and made it. and it was really exciting. >> he always made it fun to be he here. >> reporter: here at the gym, people paid tribute with cards like these. one reads, "we are very sorry for your loss." these young ladies are going do a dance paying tribute to dion.

go ahead. >> ready, and -- >> one, two, three -- >> reporter: he taught them how to do this dance, and he will certainly be missed. in fairfax, news4. there's a very blunt warning from local firefighters tonight to people who might think about swimming near great falls. the firefighters union and fairfax county posted a message to their facebook and twitter page that reads, "you swim here, you die here. any questions? two people have died in the potomac river this month. swimming is not allowed in the gorge section between key bridge and great falls because of very dangerous currents there. that doesn't seem to stop everyone, though. tomorrow, george zimmerman's lawyers are expected to present evidence showing trayvon martin had marijuana in his system the night that george zimmerman shot him. the judge ruled late today that the jury can hear that toxicology report. testimony today again centered on a 911 call and who was heard

screaming for help. five of zimmerman's friends testified that it's his voice. trayvon martin's father also took the stand and was challenged about whether he told police it was not his son's voice the first time he heard the call. >> i kind of pushed away from the -- away from the table and just kind of shook my head and said "i can't tell." >> tracy martin said after hearing the tape several times he thinks the voice is trayvon's. zimmerman has pleaded not guilty and says he shot martin in self-defense. cars under water. the subway system shut down tonight in toronto. strong storms moved through that city tonight. they knocked out power to 35,000 people. some commuter trains also got stuck in high water. passengers stranded for hours. veronica johnson keeping an eye on storm chances for us later this week. but right now, looking pretty good, doesn't it? >> that's right. we've gotten a chance to cool off, jim. i've been taking a look at temperatures from where we were at earlier today.

where we are right now. our heat wave took a bit of a pause today. from the 90s to the upper 80s, we had a high of 87 degrees. the previous three days all 9 degrees or higher. but it's back on with the heat for tomorrow. again, a little bit of a cool-off now as we sit at 73 degrees in manassas. rockville, right now coming in at 77 degrees. you folks in franconia, 73. 83 in town. showers, isolated ones make their way southeast around frederick, maryland. we could be looking at nasty storms on wednesday. in fact, even the possibility of severe weather later this week. i'll have details coming up. >> thanks. new developments on the war in afghanistan could have a big impact on our future military presence in that country. tonight "the new york times" reports the obama administration may speed up the troop withdrawl from afghanistan next year. and there may be no deal to keep forces after the 2014 pull-out deadline. the "times" cites american and

european officials who blame ongoing tension between president obama and afghan president hamid karzai. tomorr, 19 firefighters killed in a wildfire in arizona will be honored in a memorial service in arizona. vice president joe biden will attend. tonight, the u.s. honor flag is on its way to prescott after arriving at the san diego airport. a crowd watched as a pilot passed the flag off to honor guards. for the past ten years, a nonprofit group has sent that flag to memorials for fallen heroes. in yarnell, arizona, the site of the fire, more residents lined up to get back home today. some are being allowed to return for the first time in more than a week. authorities in canada now say 13 people are confirmed dead in a big train explosion. but the number of missing hasn't changed. 40 people are still unaccounted for after the explosion in a small quebec town. first responders can't reach all the affected areas because of the risk of more fires. that explosion happened when the

train break free from the tracks and barrelled down a hill into the center of town. we should know by the end of the week whether felony embezzlement charges will be thrown out against the former chef for virginia governor bob mcdonnell. that chef is named todd schneider. he and his lawyer told our julie carey that they're under a gag order and can't talk about the case. they have argued that the office of attorney general and gubernatorial candidate ken cuccinelli went after schneider to cover up other alleged wrongdoing in the mcdonnell administration. a police chase through city streets ends with gunshots. why officers had weapons drawn in an l.a. neighborhood. before you go to sleep tonight, you might want to take a minute

that story coming up. there's a police chase in southern california tonight that ended with gunshots fired into the patrol car. police were chasing two armed robbery suspects. a they cornered the car in the town of raceda. the suspects opened fire, put at least ten bullet holes in the windshield of the police cruiser. at least one of the officers suffered minor injuries. police have one of those suspects in custody. the other is still on the loose. it's a sight we can all get used to -- the washington monument shining a light over the district at night. from now until next spring when earthquake repairs are supposed to be complete. the national parks service got it all started with a ceremony tonight. and ericka gonzalez was there.

she joins us live from the national mall now. >> reporter: hi, doreen. one of the workers that was atop the monument that was adjusting the lights came down earlier and told us it is hotter than heck up there. you can only imagine with the scaffolding and so forth. take a look. i don't know, i think it looks pretty good, don't you? let there be light. from the bottom up in what appears to be one square at a time, the washington monument now has lights. >> when they flipped the switch, i was underwhelmed. actually, it's becoming more and more beautiful as the night goes on. >> reporter: pretty brilliant, right? enough to make you stop, stare, snap a few pics. >> in paris, that's what they do with the eiffel tower. why not do the same here. >> reporter: paris comes to d.c.? >> paris comes to d.c. absolutely. >> reporter: since the earthquake of 2011 when cameras captured the moment the monument was shaking and people were trying to escape, major repairs have opinion in the works, and

it's going to take another year to complete. kevin manes and his family are visiting from kentucky. at first glance, it's a bit of an eyesore, he says. >> i think it looks horrible. >> reporter: but it goes down in the record books. >> doesn't usually look like this. and we're getting to see it at a point in time, and i was about to take a picture. hopefully the next time i come it's not going to look like that again. >> reporter: the scrim and lighting, 488 lamps, designed by michael graves. the same architect who did an almost identical job on the monument in 2000 when grout work was done. >> tonight we're going to light it as the symbol of the future of the restoration. >> reporter: so for the next year, a little more twinkle to d.c.'s historic panorama. it is costing $15 million to repair the washington monument. and if you weren't able to come out here yourself and take a look at it this evening, you goat look at it every -- you get to look at it every night for the next year.

shenandoah. 68, 69 degrees. 72 culpeper. 71 in manassas to start you out tomorrow morning. so again, just isolated little patchy figure to the south. and cloud cover around with increasing clouds for the afternoon. the weak disturbance moves through our area. we'll get some more showers and even thunderstorms firing, i think, after about 2:00 tomorrow. it is going to be another hot one as our temperature this time goes to 90 degrees. and i think our shower, our storm chance could go late. this is a snapshot of 9:00 p.m. tomorrow evening. now, wednesday's looking like a busy day. in fact, wednesday is looking hot with a heat index up around 96, 97 degrees. also looking not just very humid but pretty stormy across the area. that weather front that's going to take down the heat, that's what will start making its way into the area wednesday and also on thursday of this week. could be looking at severe storms. 75 degrees at 8:00 a.m. partly cloudy. 81 by 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. there's your shower chance
