operation. at the live desk with the breaking developments. >> good morning, this news conference at i.c.e. headquarters just wrapped up. here's what we learned about this massive sting operation. it was an operation to identify they say and rescue sexually exploited children. and in one month they arrested 255 child predators. 244 of which live here in the u.s. they also identified 61 children being ex-plotted. now, some they say exploded through photos and videos posted online. others abused through direct physical contact. of the arrests, we know nine people were teacher, three clergy members and a total of four people arrested in virginia. many of the victim, they say, blackmailed into sending more and more explicit material. take a listen. >> we are in the midst of a

very, very serious fight against child abusers and pour nothing graphers. these 255 arrests are an important blow in the fight. we need everyone's help. >> that's right, saying they need everybody's help. they said that again just moments ago. programs they say in the past ten years have helped the arrests of 10,000 people. at the live deck, news 4. >> this just in, a controversial gun activist is now in jail this morning. a judge granted adam cokesh bond this morning but he is on supervised release. the judge also told him not to possess any guns. he is the gun activist who stirred controversy when he posted a youtube video himself loading a gun in freedom plaza. it is illegal to carry firearms in d.c. he was arrested last week at his home in fairfax county on drug and possession charges. he'll appear in court again in october. firefighters are figuring

across most of maryland, into west virginia. it's in the upper 70s to near 80 up in the mountains. down in the lower elevations from around the bay all the way around metro areas, we are in the upper 80s and it is going to stay hot all the way through the afternoon now from now all the way into around late afternoon. it's going to be tang russly hot. in fact, our afternoon heat index, how it feels temperature, could be around 100 degrees. we'll look at that in detail. look at the week ahead in just a few minutes. barbara. >> all right, tom, we'll see you in here shortly. new today, we've learned that a one hit by a police cruiser early saturday morning has now died. 25-year-old isabella mohono was hit by the officer near crest highway or crest drive around 4 oopt 30 saturday morning. the officer was responding to a call that a drunk woman was huanging in the street when he saw her in his lane. he tried to swerve but he hit her. she died at the hospital this morning. tests confirm she was under the

influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. and we're continuing to track protests from coast to coast that were sparked by the george zimmerman verdict. this video from l.a. just fed into our newsroom. police arrested at least one person who officers say threw bottles and rocks at them. and we're hearing of at least ten arrests in new york city. about 1,000 people packed times square last night. that created gridlock on a busy sunday evening. and we're expecting even more protests today. the national black church initiative is organizing one outside the justice department at the top of the next hour. the justice department says it's now taking a closer look at the george zimmerman case. federal prosecutors may file criminal civil rights charges against zimmerman. the justice department opened an investigation last year but it stepped aside so the state of florida could prosecute its case against zimmerman which ended with an acquittal.

zimmerman has sued nbc universal the parent company of the station for defamation. and right now, northern virginia bureau david culvert is in a prince william county courtroom. a trial is under way right now. margaret lucky is charged with reckless driving. prosecutors say she crossed in front of an officer as she tried to turn left into a shopping center in bristo on new year's eve. young was on his motorcycle heading to the scene of another accident with his lights and sirens on. and police are reminding homeowners to lock their doors following a home invasion in montgomery county. police say two men walked into this house on natalie woods lane in bethesda. they went right through an unlocked door on saturday night. they woke up the homeowners, debd d demanded valuables and took off. if you have any information in this case, call montgomery

county police. officers say homeowners should arm their security systems and keep an outdoor security light on in the evenings. a boy from prince georges county is recovering after he was struck by a car. this happened last night in buoy along whitmore north boulevard. paramedics took the 10-year-old boy to the hospital with what police tell us are life threatening injuries. police aren't releasing information about the driver yet. it's not clear if he or she will face any charges. we have some breaking news for you. flying again. we just got word the air force is putting combat air forces back to work including the thunderbirds. we're going to get more from the live desk coming up. plus, right now, we're getting new information about a 6-year-old who was trapped in a giant sinkhole. the family is holding a press conference. we're going to have an update at 11:30 this morning. and get ready to get dirty. and get ready to get dirty. the mud run to keep

"the democratic party of virginia sponsored this ad." when congress failed to renew the violence against women act, republican and democratic attorneys general from 47 states spoke out to protect women. but ken cuccinelli refused. the roanoke times wrote, "virginians should remember cuccinelli's cowardly inaction as he seeks to become the next governor." "one either stands for tougher punishments for sexual assaults against women or not." ken cuccinelli. he's focused on his own agenda. not us.

it looks like the thunderbirds air force demo team will be back in action perhaps as soon as next week. they and other fighter jets and bombers of course have been grounded since april because of budget cuts. the defense department we understand shifted about $7.5 billion from what they call lower priority operations to make this happen. planes start flying again started monday. the money used to restore those fighting hours will last through october 1. at the live desk, news 4. new this morning, the man who first reported edward snowed's nsa leaks is speaking out again. this time, he says the man has document that detail exactly how the nsa is structured and operates. >> in order to take documents that prove what he is saying is

true he had to take ones that detailed sensitive blueprints how the nsa does what they do. he's in position of literally thousands of documents that contain very specific blueprints that would allow somebody who read them to know exactly how the nsa does what it does which would allow then to replicate it. >> greenwald says snowed be doesn't plan to release that information but he's given it to several people already who can release it if something happens to him. snowden is still holed u ed up moscow airport seeking asylum. u.s. deputy secretary of state is in egypt meeting with interript government leader. it's the first high-level talk since the egyptian military remooed morsi on july 5th. burns will meet with military and business leaders. also today, the u.s. base in cairo opened for the first time since the state department, closed it during the recent protests that left more than 90

people dead. secretary of state john kerry is about to embark on another overseas trip. he'll fly to the middle east. he'll be visiting jerusalem, ramallah and imam. this comes as israeli prime minister netanyahu pushes once again for peace talks with palestine over the west bank. netanyahu says he called palestinian prime minister mahmoud abbas. they haven't had any peace talks, though, in the last three years. and while that's good news for secretary kerry, he'll also be following a court appearance today for a man arrested for suspicious behavior. officers said a 29-year-old man was, paed outside kerry's boston home. that man started taking pictures apparently. when police asked hip to move his car, he said he'd been drinking. secretary kerry was not home

when this happened. new today, demonstrators are asking congress to stop immigration refor and protect american jobs for american workers. here's a live look at the capital. the conservative black american leadership alliance marched from freedom plaza to capitol hill this morn. they're demanning congress not pass a path for citizenship bill for people living in the u.s. illegal really. majority leader reid just wrapped up a speech at the center for american progress where he talked about ending the gridlock in the senate and here to talk more about that effort is nbc's senior political editor mark murray. this is not the first time this has happened, is it, and exactly what is he calling for? >> the first thing he wants to change, the filibuster rule. this is related to executive branch appointees. president obama's pick for the labor department, and what has gone on, routinely, is it's taken 60 votes to get this done. a super majority.

reid wants to say we want a simple majority passage. this is tying up president obama from getting his agenda from being able to be accomplished. >> let's listen to what the senator actually said and then you can comment on that. senator harry reid. >> during the time we've been a country till barack obama became president, 20 executive nominees were filibustered. during the four years that president obama has been president, he's already had 16 of his nominees filibustered. think about that. >> so what do you say to that? >> he is right on this. republicans are saying, harry reid, if you go ahead and do this and use quote/unquote the nuclear option, next time you guys are in the minoritminority going to do that, maybe worse. republicans did this when they controlled the senate. they got some of bush's judicial

appointments through. harry reid and democrats are hoping the same thing. by going close to the line but not over it, they're able to threaten republicans, say, okay, we'll pass some of these folks. >> the nuclear option, that's what they're calling it. we'll move on to virginia politics. terry mcauliffe has a new campaign. let's listen to this ad. >> you have let your people down. you have let the community down. and i do not trust him. >> what does she say before that. >> it's all about in southwest virginia this seeps to be an ad that is going to end up running in rural virginia. they wouldn't tell us for sure where it's running. it has to do with an energy firm that ended up coming from out of state, making money. >> she case ken kuch nelly took money. >> and then he changed his mind. what you heard in that ad, it all goes back to the issue of trust. it's interesting to note the kuch kuchinelli campaign has been

read on nbcnews.com. in less than an hour, former president george hw bush and barbara bush will be at the white house to honor service volunteers. the first president bush and president obama will hand out the 5,000th point of life award. bush started that organization back in 1989 to recognize people who have made a difference in their communities. and we would like to make a difference in the heat in this community. it is so hot out there. and getting hotter by the minute. how hot is it going to get today? >> first all, welcome back. you say welcome back to me because i was gone last week too. >> oh, you were gone last week? welcome back. >> we brought heat and humidity for you. oh, man, it is with us. we've had this heat wave commencing. last type it got 95 degrees or higher was way back to last september. in 2012 when it got to 95.

so it's been a long time since we've had this kind of heat. i think we'll get up to 95. there is the fountain and the capitol there. it is cooking now. in fact, temperatures right there are around 90 degrees. and there is the view over the potomac river. one little lonely cloud just popped up in a blue sky floating in the steam heat. right now, 88 at reagan national. dew point at a steamy 73. whenever it's over 70, that is swelderring humidity. it's with us. right now around the beltway in montgomery county, it's in the mid-80s. much of arlington and fairfax, around 90 degrees now. the rest of northern virginia generally in the upper 80s to near 90. further west, shannenandoah val, generally low to mid-80s there. the view from space showing a

mostly clear sky. just a few puffy clouds. and later this afternoon, these little areas in green, these are se zones of potential isolated thundershowers that may pop up only briefly. might get just a rumble thunder. there's only a small chance of that. the big story though is the heat. and the humidity. and hour by hour today, a quick climb in temperatures, already upper 80s, near 90. ought to be peeking in the mid-90s by midafternoon. the steam heat will be with us. there's the temperature graph. dropping back down by late evening. still in the 80s. by midnight, it's still in the low 80s. there's your temperature scale. there's the time frame. this is going to be an uncomfortably hot day from now till this evening. if you have to be outside, if you're spending much time outdoor, take frequent break, wear loose fitting clothing, drink plenty of water. stay in the ac, stay with us here at nbc 4.

through the rest of the week, each day, afternoon highs into the 90s. with that humidity, it will feel like about 100 degrees each afternoon. highs reaching mid and upper 90s. each afternoon there is the possibility of an isolated thunderstorm popping up all the way into friday. this is our first extended heat wave of the year. then it's going to break down over the weekend. i think the far extended outlook way into next week it does look like the pattern is going to fundamentally change. we'll be back down into the 80s for highs on sunday. saturday and sunday, both of those days, we have the possibility of some showers and thundershowers. a greater chance as we'll have that pattern chance occurring as we get into the weekend. do what you can to stay cool. barbara, you're always cool. >> oh, thank you very much. i was going to ask you how you're planning to stay cool. >> i'm going to stay in the ac. >> i guess that's the bet thing you can do. run through the sprinklers.

addiction. he talked about struggling with drugs since he was a teenager. monteith was 31 years old. a motorcycle racer died trying to top 300 miles per hour. this is video of one of bill warner's test runs yesterday morning. warner was clocked at 287 miles per hour when he crashed at a former air base in northern maine. witnesses say he was launched 40 feet into the air and 100 yards down the track before his last run. warner and his crew were worried about the increasing winds. well, starting tomorrow, you can catch cirque de soleil in las vegas. tomorrow's show is the first show since a performer there died late last month. an acrobat fell from about 90 feet above the stage at the mgm grand. tomorrow night's show will be dedicated to that performer. the act that was part of the accident has been removed. and we are waiting to hear

go as far as they're concerned and they're hoping the work begins some time this week. metro bus riders stand along wayne avenue waiting for their rides. across the street, the trouble-plagued silver springs transit center sits empty behind schedule and overbudget. >> hopefully they'll get started soon. we really need it. >> reporter: the sounds of construction may soon fill the air once again. permits have been issued. the notice to proceed should be issued today. the county expects the repair work to begin some time this week. >> it's redoing correctly the work that was incorrectly done in the first place. that work will comprise of the initial demolition of some of the concrete on the surface of those pore strips so we can insert reinforcing bars and repour concrete on that. we'll set up a mock up of the overall repair for the beams and

girders. >> reporter: the transit center was supposed to open a couple years ago. cracks in the concrete and other structural design falls brought the work to a grinding halt. when it is done, it will be inspected by a host of experts. >> this design for the remediation of the pour strips as well as the overlay has been reviewed and signed off by not only the design engineer but four of the highest recognized structural firms in the united states. >> reporter: they just want to see the transit center open. >> our safety is everything. i don't worry about it but i wish they could fix it. i wish they could fix it rather than just letting it go to waste. it doesn't look good for the community and, you know, it doesn't look good for metro. >> reporter: the county says the contractor will be paying for the cost of repairs. as for when the transit center will finally open, there is no time line at least not yet. in silver spring, megan mcgrath,

news 4. >> they issued a statement, saying, quote, we and our engineers have participated fuldly with montgomery county's engineers and other interested parties to address issues. we regret this professional dialogue which we asked for over a year and a half ago didn't happen till recently. goes on to say, we are waiting specific written directions from the county to proceed with initial work. we expect to receive this directive shortly. our sole focus is to open the silver spring transit center for the citizens of montgomery county. well, melissa is at the live desk. >> good morning. we're just hearing from the family of this indiana boy who spent three hours trapped in a sand hole over the weekend. we understand he is still in critical condition. he is 6 years old.

now his doctor says he is moving his arms and his legs. take a listen. >> myth benathan's injuries are his lungs. his initial neurological exam has been remarkably good. we expect a full recovery or as close to a full recovery of his neurological function. >> his doctors at this point working to remove sand from nathan's lungs. he fell into this hole at indiana's mt. baldi. he spent more than three hours buried in the sand as crews worked to get hip om out. they expect him to be in the hospital for perhaps up to a couple more weeks and then rehab maybe for up to a month. crews say he survived thanks to an air pocket in the dune. the beach there has been shut down since this accident. at the live desk, news 4. and new this morning, asiana airlines says they will not file

a lawsuit against the ntsb for defamati defamation. the airline was considering the second suit after announcing they would sue a san francisco tv station. the station used fake and racially offensive names to identify the pilots of the flight that crashed last week. causing outrage in korea. an anchor for the station read the phony names friday which also appears on the screen. the anchor apologized. the ntsb apologized, saying a summer intern in d.c. improperly confirmed the names of the flight crew. also new this morning, we're learning when the shipwrecked cost cord ya cruise ship can be mod. they are trying to put it upright and float it away. however, if crews don't get it right the first time, they will not get a second chance. 32 people died when that ship slammed into a reef and partly

sank the ship on an island that's near italy. it happened more on this than a year and a half ago. it's been there ever since. it's now tougher for women to get an abortion in northern virginia according to "the washington post". nova women's health care just closed. it per forred more abortions than any other clinic in the past two years. we don't know why it shut down. we just checked the website and nothing has changed there. we can tell you pro-life activists have protested outside that building every day. and we are hearing of similar situations across the country. according to a new study, states have enacted 40 laws that restrict or further regulate abortions. pro-life advocates say they're using state governments and congress to restrict the procedures because they don't think the supreme court will

weigh in on this issue any time soon. let's go to tom kieran for the latest on his forecast. anything looking cooler? >> it's not too bad. i'm in the shade and i'm not moving and the air is moving a little bit. so if you are in the shade, out of the sun, and you have to be outside, it's actually fairly pleasant. here we are, this is our typical hottest period of the year. right now, temperatures are into the mid and upper 80s throughout most of the region. 88 now at reagan national. later today, into the mid-90s. average high this time of year, 89. we have not seen mid-90 temperatures since all the way back to last september. we'll have sunshine, a few clouds popping up. a slight chance of an isolated thunderstorm. a little holter on tuesday, wednesday and thursday each afternoon. small chance of an isolated thunderstorm as well as on friday. an increased chance of showers and thunderstorms over the weekend. as we see this pattern breaking down and changing. so i think this heat wave is only going to last between now into saturday, rather than

several weeks like we've seen in the past summers. it will be breaking down and we'll probably get a break from the high heat as we get into next week. could get some storms saturday and sunday. that is the way it looks, barbara. mosquitos are picking on you? researchers say certain things might make you more attractive to misskitto. they can target you if you've had one alcoholic drink. if you're pregnant. if you're type o blood. if you exercise regularly. or even if you're wear clothes with colors that make you stand out. i don't know what those colors are but i guess bite colors. smithsonian points out this the only applies to about 20% of us. hopefully we are not among those. it sees like it's becoming trendy to get dirty. mud runs are becoming as popular as traditional races. jenna miller, the global

ambassador for the dirty girl run joins us this morning to talk about it. is that what it's called, the dirty girl mud run? >> isn't that a great name? >> is it just for women? >> it is. it's women only. all ages. it's not even timed. it'sir8 ta factor you sometimes get with the mud run. it's a dance to step outside their comfortable zone a little bit. >> it's a mud pit. >> there are 12 on sta wes from the tunnel crew to the pms, pretty muddy stuff, midpit. the get over yourself wall climb. yes, you get down and dirty. by the time you're done, you definitely are muddy. you should see the women crossing the finish line. >> is there a world champion? is this local only? >> there are 50 of us. >> there are? >> there are 50 dirty girls across the nation. i think one of the reasons it

has become so popular is because it is so much fun. it's such a girl bonding girl power-type experience. you should see the women crossing the finish line. they are laughing, crying, cheering, hugging. they feel empowered. they feel inspired. they said, i did this, what's next. >> what age group are you looking for? >> we've had a 14 year old girl who did it. we had a 74-year-old woman in colorado. anybody can do it. >> and how do you prepare for something like this? you have to be in pretty good shape to begin with? >> you can certainly challenge yourself at dirty girl, absolutely. you do not have to be super in shape. it's kind of a gateway midrun. a lot of women who this is the first time they've ever done an organized run before in their life. a large percentage of dirty girls. the first time he. they realize, you know, i can do this. >> a big crowd to come out and

watch signs girls get dirty? >> a lot of men offer to stand at the finish lane and hose them down as they come up. it is cute to see the kids holding the signs for their moms. >> how did you get involved in this. >> some friends of ours started the dirty girl mud run. they were going to a lot of these events s and they kept seeing the same type of person, that avid athlete. they said, what about the others who can step outside of their comfort zone and get a sense accomplishment? and really it is a life changing event for some of these women. >> -- participate in all of these events? >> the dirty girl run is all day long. the waves go off every 15 minutes. in every wave, there is a breast cancer survivor. someone running in honor of
