this is the beginning of a heat wave getting ready to crash on top of us. 95 degrees at national airport. that officially makes this, so far, the hottest day of the year. the old record setback june 25th of earlier this year. because of the building heat, heat advisories have been posted tomorrow, noon to 7:00 tomorrow for arlington, alexandria and the district of columbia as well as the city of baltimore. right inside the urban centers tomorrow. no cooling rain showers today. current temperatures, low to mid-90s. that's only half the story. heat index 101 at national airport. so the rest of your monday evening hot and humid and no rain chances at all. temperatures low 90s through at least 6:00, 7:00 this evening, back into the mid-80s by 10:00. i'll show you the seven-day coming up in just a minute. chuck, thank you. in his first comment since the acquittal of george zimmerman, attorney general eric holder said today that the shooting of

the forefront, racial questions that have to be answered in the criminal justice system. even though i don't believe george at all acted in a racially biased way, now that the conversation is on the table, we don't need to talk about george zimmerman anymore. >> reporter: but the nation is still talking about zimmerman and the jury's decision, more than 450,000 people have signed an online naacp petition for the department of justice to move forward with a civil rights investigation into the case and the organize has issued an even broader call to action. >> we will roll back stand your ground laws. we will pass powerful anti-racial profiling ordinance. >> reporter: for the man at the center of this controversy, there may be no prison sentence but his attorneys say zimmerman is anything but free. >> i don't know if he ever walks the street again not wondering if the person coming behind him or walking behind him is going

heading to the scene of another accident with lights and sirens on. northern virginia reporter david culper was there in court today. >> reporter: no jail time for the 70-year-old woman responsible for that wreck. we can show you the first images. she broke down into tears as she shared her reaction to today's decision, surrounded by her husband and her grown children. the judge fined her $2,500. she'll have to serve 200 hours of community service and her license is going to be suspended for six months. officer young's family was also in court. they were sobbing through much of the testimony today. his wife with whom we spoke with exclusively back in may also in court today. so, too, were officer young's parents and two brothers. outside of court his parents told me they would have liked to have seen a harsher punishment for licke. coming up at 5:00 tonight, we'll share more from officer young's family. you'll hear from them directly and hear more from margaret

licke and her husband and the words they have for officer young's family. reporting from the prince william courthouse. a gun activist out of jail and on supervised release. a judge in fairfax county released adam kokesch on $5,000 bond. it shows him loading a gun at freedom plaza back on july 4th. he was arrested last week at his home. he's facing felony drug and gun possession charges. the judge told him he cannot own a gun until the case is complete. he'll be back in court in october. we are tracking new developments in the story of edward snowden. guardian reporter glenn greenwald says snowden has highly sensitive documents that could serve as a blueprint for the way the nsa operates and could be used to either evade or replicate the agency's surveillance programs. however, greenwald says snowden

does not want to release those documents. on friday, snowden told russia he will stop releasing u.s. secrets if moscow will grant them temporary asylum. police are still looking for the suspects behind at least two home invasions burglaries in the bethesda area. >> one happened saturday. >> reporter: saturday's burglary is causing concern because although it's not clear whether or not the burglars knew it, the owners of the home were present in the house at the time. according to police, the burglars entered through an unlocked back door. montgomery county police say that is a big issue for them, not so much forced entry in these burglary cases but situations where people are leaving doors, garage doors to the home, windows unlocked. allowing burglars to bistep having to break in forcibly and essentially being able to walk right inside the home.

4:00. we've learned that a man arrested outside of home of secretary of state john kerry will be held without bail on unrelated charges. he was arrested yesterday. federal and local officials say he was parked outside kerry's house taking pictures. when police asked him to move he said he'd been drinking. investigators say he also had a pellet gun in his car. his bond was revoked from a previous assault charge. he's accused of violating probation on a drunk driving case. the plane that crash the near ocean city was intact as it fell into the water. today, the ntsb released the results of their investigation from the june 30th crash. the report also says a witness saw the plane flying low with no sound of an engine. one person says the plane appeared to be taking a belly flop. the two people aboard died. they were both off-duty ocean city police officers.

the pilots of asiana airlines flight that crashed in san francisco were back in south korea today. the transportation ministry confirms the pilots arrived on saturday after lengthy interviews with u.s. investigators. now, the pilots will be questioned by korean government officials in seoul. three people were killed when the plane went down on july 6th. the cause of the crash is not officially been determined but asiana airlines is pledging to bolster pilot training now. the airlines also says it will sue fox tv station in san francisco for an erroneous report using phony and racially offensive names for the pilots. a ktvu news anchor read the names on the air friday and then apologized when it quickly became apparent the report was wrong. the airline says the report disparaged asians and damaged the company's reputation. the national transportation safety board has also apologized saying a summer intern errone s erroneously confirmed the names

checking now with the live desk. news 4's jim rosenfield with new developments on the edward snowden saga. >> russian president vladimir putin breaking his silence, saying snowden will be leaving russia, in his words, soon. he also took the opportunity to take a jab at the u.s. he said the u.s. government has basically stranded snowden in moscow by essentially frightening other european countries from allowing him through their air space or into their airports. snowden of course has applied for temporary asylum in russia until he can make his way to latin america. the russian government says it still has not received that request. snoweden is wanted here in the u.s. for leaking details about the government's secret surveillance program. that's the latest from the live desk. i'm jim rosenfield, back to you. former president george h.w. bush was back at the white house today. he was there to deliver his

affair, vintage white cars. very small group of people. you have that counteracted by the jimmy kimmel wedding. >> it could be a nice week for a royal baby arrival. what's the latest on that front? >> everybody is sitting in london waiting. this baby was supposed to be here on saturday. did not come. miss katherine spent the weekend with her parents. the boys were up playing in a polo tournament about 100 miles away. the hospital while still almost completely under surveillance 24/7, as of right now, not a lot of action to report. with the impending birth of a baby that could change at the drop of a hat. we here are all on call should that baby decide to come sooner rather than later. michelle beadle, thank you. >> thank you. to the weather, how hot is it going to get before we get a break? >> every day this week, probably 95 or better. we've not been 95 since

september 1st of last year. it's been quite some time. now that it's here, once you break the ice, that's all it takes. it's going to be a warm one all week long. that was the view from our city camera. this is the view from our reston camera. there is the dulles greenway. on the whole, a good-looking day outside today. sky is relatively blue. keep an eye on that as we go through the rest of the week. each day that sky will be more and more hazy and gunky colored. at least four more days, 95 or higher are on the way. high temperatures all week in the mid to upper 90s. even overnight low temperatures, no real break from the heat, especially inside the urban centers. overnight lows in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. and, again, a big change compared to how we've been. the number of 90 degree days up through this time of the year, last summer we had twice as many 90 degree days. what's worse, last year they were the days like today, 95, 96.

up till now, the 90 degree days have been in the low 90s. things starting to turn around here. we'll notice and probably not appreciate much of the difference. 95 now at national airport. winds are light out of the north averaging 3 miles per hour. low 90s in northern maryland but mid-90s inside the beltway and down into parts of southern maryland. 94 in waldorf. highs for tomorrow, 96 in town, 96 in frederick, 96 in mmanassa. that's only half the story. the heat index values, tomorrow afternoon heat index 101, as we get into the day on wednesday, heat index around 100 to 105 degrees once again. as a result, a heat advisory has been posted for the district of columbia, arlington county and the city of alexandria, from noon until 7:00 tomorrow. i fully expect the weather service will have to expand the heat advisories on down through the rest of the week as the coming days work their way through. another scorcher coming up for

with his ten rules, including fiscal responsibility. he does not bring up the prostitution scanned that'll brought him down. spitzer reportedly does not get an advance payment for the book and all proceeds will go to charity. u.s. attorney general eric holder was the speaker at the delta sigma theta luncheon. holder complimented the sorority for its years of public service saying it transformed countless lives and improved communities from coast to coast. delta sigma theta is the largest african-american sorority. the week-long convention continues through thursday. d.c. has many areas showing dramatic change in recent years. now two residents of southeast d.c. are working together to end negative and outdated stereotypes about their neighborhoods. >> they're also using the power of social media to deliver their message.

alexandria from noon tomorrow. i think they will expand the heat advisories. no cooling rain drops anywhere to be found today. temperatures mostly in the mid-90s. cooler alongside the western shore of the chesapeake bay. heat index values in the 100s now, 105. what does tomorrow look like, breakfast, lunch and dinner, near 80 near breakfast time, 94 at lunch and low 90s at night. a month-long operation called iguardian resulted in the arrest of more than 250 child predators. but today, federal law enforcement officials we can't, quote, arrest our way out of this problem. in addition to the arrests, the director of immigration and customs enforcement announced that 61 children were rescued from sexual exploitation. he said public awareness is key

'90s police who beat a fleeting motorist, rodney king, were acquitted in state court, sparking riots. two of the cops were later convicted of federal charges. the sanford, florida case would be tough he for the feds. no witnesses, says a former top justice department official. >> they're going to have to convince a jury beyond a reasonable doubt that george zimmerman when he targeted trayvon martin had trayvon martin's race in mind. it's always hard to prove beyond a reasonable doubt what's on somebody's mind. and particularly here where we just didn't have any other witnesses around. >> reporter: so despite the angry reaction by some to zimmerman's acquittal, the florida trial may be his last. but even if the justice department decides not to bring a federal civil rights case, zimmerman could still get sued in civil court by trayvon martin's family. i'm steve handelsman, news 4. zimmerman has sued nbc universal, the parent company of this station for defamation.

you're watching news 4 at 4:00. a stafford county family is grieving the loss of a wife and mother after a six-car crash. 50-year-old sue ann collins was killed. she was driving a volvo with her 8-year-old granddaughter inside on route 167 last night. police say the driver of a ford truck hit two cars and then slammed into her volvo which overturned into oncoming traffic. collins was thrown out of volvo and hit by another vehicle. strangers rushed in to help. >> there was another witness that he ran to the vehicle and got her out of the vehicle, cut her out of her seat belt. she just kept saying i'm okay, i'm okay. where's my nana? >> the child is still in the hospital. the driver of the truck was also hospitalized. coming up on news 4 at 5:00, the victim's husband talks to news 4's jewelulie kerry about how h

reviews. miss rowling says she wanted to write somebody without all the hype. we've waited long enough, twinkies and other hostess snacks supposed to be back today. so far they are very tough to find. we have been phoning all day, walmart stores say they received hostess snack but are sold out. safeway hopes to have twinkies later in the week. giant says about a third of its d.c. area stores have hostess snacks. giant expects all stores to have them in about a week. several other convenience stores said they don't have any of the hostess snacks for sale. they've been missing from stores since the company filed for bankruptcy last fall. if you get one, do not leave them in a car on a hot day like this. >> oh, my gosh. it will be nothing but a big pile of melted sugar in about 15 minutes. don't leave your zingers or twinkies in the car or kids or pets in the car. you shouldn't even stay in the

car. as soon as you turn it off, get the heck out of it and leave the windows cracked just a little bit to keep the heat from building up too much on the inside. you have to be heat smart. the rules start to change a little bit. you'll need extra water for sure. longer shade breaks. you'll want to call and check up on your elderly neighbors or friends or relatives that may or may not have working air conditioners. offer them cool shelter if they need it and really pets included, my crazy dogs need extra water on the walks when it gets like this. this is a view from our national harbor camera, looking back northbound up the river. there's the national cathedral. kind of a hazy sky outside for today. our air quality will get worse and worse as the week goes along. it's 95 degrees right now in capital heights and district heights. 93 in manassas and bristow. the heat index is hovering around 100 degrees. that also is going to be repeated again, day after day

after day this upcoming weekend. heat has a tendency to build up on you as you go through the course of the next couple of days. overnight lows, mostly in the 70s. downtown washington, downtown baltimore and right alongside the chesapeake bay, it's barely going to get back down berow. 77, 76 degrees and highs tomorrow back into the mid-90s we will go. heat indexes again tomorrow, just like today at or above 100. could be as high as 105 degrees for heat indexes tomorrow. as a result of the high heat indexes, noon until 7:00 p.m. tomorrow, the national weather service has issued the heat advisory for the urban centers of baltimore and washington. here's our future weather forecast overnight tonight. partly cloudy, mugginess outside. then tomorrow plenty of hot, humid sunshine. only a very slight chance for a few showers, primarily up in the mountains of west virginia. that pattern will be repeated again on wednesday. the slightest opportunity for showers out well to the west of. in town, for most of the d.c.

metropolitan area, not much if anything in the way of rain chances. perfect week to call your friends with a pool or better yet, your friends with a beach place and move in for the week. high temperatures tuesday, wednesday and thursday. ocean city to rehoboth, only the upper 80s to near 90s. about a 10 degree improvement to simply go down and sit on the sand. here's our seven-day forecast, 96 tomorrow, 97 on wednesday, 98 thursday and friday. i think that's going to be the worst of it will be the thursday, friday time frame and overnight low temperatures hovering in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. as we head into the weekend, saturday and sunday, a little concerned about rain chances for the weekend. the real problem could be saturday afternoon and evening. could see a chance of severe weather as the real bubble of extreme heat breaks down and more average weather tries to come in. the change from one to the next could cause severe weather troubles on saturday and shower chances may linger on into sunday as well. friday, probably going to be the hottest day of the week. may not get to 100 this werek.

the last time we made 100 was july 26th of last year. last july we had seven days 100 or higher. there's your seven-day forecast. all this means is you need to find a cool body of water and submerge yourself up to about the shoulders and relax. >> all right. doctors say a little boy who spent hours buried in a huge sand dune could be out of the hospital in about two weeks. doctors at the university of chicago medical center say he's now awake and doesn't appear to have any brain damage from the accident. >> nathan fell into the dune while playing at a beach in indiana on from i. it took rescue teams more than three hours to get him out. today family members are thanking those rescue teams and are calling his survival a miracle. >> we believe god spared him for a reason. and so we're very confident that god will give us back nathan

thanks to budget shifting, the air force is putting much of its combat craft back up into the sky. about a thid of the branch's aircraft have been grounded since april because of sequester. congress is allowing the defense department to shift more than $7 billion of its budget to more vital operations for the air force that includes training for pilots. the popular thunderbirds program will also resume flying. the public shows for the rest of the 2013 year remain canceled. senate majority leader harry reid is threatening to use the so-called nuclear option to move presidential nominations along in the senate. republicans are warning that the current gridlock is nothing compared to what a post-nuclear congress would look like. brian moore has that story. >> reporter: another week, another partisan showdown on capitol hill. >> what we're doing is saying look, american people, shouldn't president obama have somebody

doug kammerer is here to explain how long it will go on. >> hot temperatures today, 5 degrees. that's the hottest temperature we've seen so far. we're currently sitting at that 95 degree number. look at the heat index at the bottom of your screen. right now it feels like 102 in the d.c. metro area. not much wind, 7 miles an hour. that's not going to help you at all. hottest temperatures so far this year. we've seen it today, we'll see it the next couple of days, too. on through friday, 95 degrees or greater, most of those days will be warmer than 95. it will feel like 100 to 105. some of those days could even be close to 110. we're going to talk about what days specifically will be the hottest. of course we're talking high humidity throughout the next few days, too. we're not going to see much in the way of relief. as far as your planner tonight, let's head down towards
