zimmerman now faces the prospect of a civil lawsuit brought against him by the family of trayvon martin and the threat of possible federal charges from the department of justice. >> we will help this country define what's justice for black people. >> -- was held outside the headquarters of the department of justice. federal prosecutors are investigating whether zimmerman violated a federal civil rights law when he shot and killed martin. a group of congressional leaders from new york among those who say they want to see the case proceed on that front. >> in fact, everybody went out of their way to say race wasn't a factor, that race didn't matter when all of us knew that race is a factor and was a factor. what we're asking the justice department now to do is look at the race issue. >> tonight people are asking whether a civil rights case against george zimmerman would

be plausible. news 4's chris gordon is outside the department of justice now with more. chris? >> reporter: well, this is the focus of that inquiry, the demonstration as you see right here on pennsylvania avenue at ninth at northwest washington across from the department of justice, they're trying to get motorists to honk their horns, saying justice for trayvon or we need justice. the question is will the department of justice file charges, federal charges. we looked at local cases in recent history that doj got involved in or declined to as a hint of how they may handle george zimmerman. >> this is the beginning of a movement for justice and to teach the justice department all about justice. >> reporter: the national black church initiative, a coalition of 34,000 churches nationwide, organized this demonstration asking the justice department to indict george zimmerman for violating trayvon martin's civil rights. >> this was definitely racial

profiling in its worse degree. here's a man who has appointed himself to take a life. he appointed himself god that night. >> reporter: this lawyer says the justice department turned her down when she asked for federal hate crime charges. she represented the family of school principal brian betts who was killed in his silver spring home by four teenagers. >> because we believe his death was motivated by his sexual orientation. similar to the zimmerman case where they believe that the crime was motivated by race. >> reporter: the department of justice is currently investigating the college park confrontation between prince george's county police and students in the street that occurred in march of 2010 after the university of maryland's basketball victory over duke. however, there is no indication if or when federal civil rights violations may be filed as a result. you may remember years earlier, the death of ronnie white, a

detainee found hanging in the prince george's county detention center. the justice department investigated and secured a guilty plea from a corrections officer in that case as a result. now, the focus is again on the department of justice and whether it will file civil rights violations against george zimmerman for fatally shooting 17-year-old trayvon martin. >> absolutely understand the need for the martin family to further this request of the justice department. based on the evidence, the law, the facts of this case, i do not believe the justice department will file civil rights charges. >> reporter: of course that is just one legal opinion. there are other lawyers and analysts that believe the department of justice should not only investigate but possibly file federal charges in this case. that's the latest live. at the department of justice, along pennsylvania avenue in northwest washington, chris gordon, news 4. president obama will not get involved in deciding whether to

pursue civil rights charges against george zimmerman. the white house said today that will be up to the justice department. attorney general eric holder addressed the case today. hear what he had to say coming up at 6:30. zimmerman sued nbc universal, the parent company of this station for defamation. the company strongly denied the allegations. let's turn now to the weather. have you been outside? you know it's a furnace out there. it's only going to get worse this week. hottest week of the year in fact. doug kammerer cooling off in the weather center for us. >> we have the ac cranked up here for sure. we are talking about a heat wave, heat wave number four. the hottest one yet. 94 degrees. we saw 95 just an hour ago. that's the hottest number so far this year. look at the heat index, near 100. we hit 102 last hour. now back down to 99. no relief there, though. don't expect any of that. you talk the highest temperatures of the year, not just today. but over the next four to five

days, 95 or higher, right on through the day on friday. the temperature, the real feel is the heat index out there. that will feel much more like 100 to 105 some of those days. could be between 105 and 110 with the high humidity. we'll talk much more about that. how high and how long will heat wave number four last? i'll have it for you when we come back. no jail time for the woman deemed responsible for the accident that killed a police officer. david is live outside the courthouse with more. david? >> reporter: doreen, as you mentioned, no jill time for margaret licke. meantime in the nearly seven months since that deadly crash, i can tell you, the emotions are

raw. i sat behind the family. they were sobbing, especiallies athey heard a police investigator describe exactly what happened this past new years eve. >> what have the past seven months been like? >> it's been hell. she hasn't been able to sleep. i volcano been able to sleep. >> reporter: officer chris young's mom and dad want you to remember their son as a hero. they left court today, however, disappointed. as parents they felt left out of the judicial process. they would have liked to have seen a harsher punishment for margaret licke and they say they have yet to hear her say she's sorry. >> we never received an apology. >> reporter: licke was the driver of this van on new years eve. she pulled into this intersection. at the same time, officer young was headed to another emergency with his lights on. his motorcycle crashed into licke's van.

the father of three died on the scene. in may, robin young shared her story exclusively with news 4. she says she visits her husband's grave site weekly and talks to him. >> i tell him how the kids are. and that they miss him. and i miss him. >> reporter: today for the first time we caught up with licke as she left her probation meeting. >> it was a tragic accident. and i've been grieving since the day that it happened. >> reporter: her husband, a retired navy admiral spoke up for his wife. >> she's had a perfect braving record for over 30 years. not a single speeding ticket, not a parking ticket. this came out of the blue. it was a tragic accident and we've grieved every day and we prayed every day for the young family. >> reporter: outside of court, officer young's father told me as he himself prepares for retirement he has a new mission in life, dedicate the rest of it to memorializing his son chris.

reporting live tonight, outside the prince william circuit courthouse, i'm david culver, news 4. take a close look at this video released tonight of a shooting that started on a metro bus over the weekend. it happened near douglas place on saturday night. police say two men boarded a bus and then they started to fire a weapon at people standing outside on the sidewalk. two people were hit but they weren't critically hurt. investigators are offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. a month-long operation called iguardian helped take more than 250 suspected child predators off the streets. officials with immigration and customs enforcement announced those arrests today. they say the operation helped rescue 61 children from sexual exploitation. they say education is also key. >> parents know and monitor your children's online habits. parents and educators help

children understand that talking to strangers online is as dangerous as it is on the street. >> five of the suspects arrested in that month-long sting are from maryland, one is from virginia. >> a meeting between senators is getting under way to avoid a politically volatile threat from harry reid. he wants to change the senate rules so a simple majority vote can prevent filibusters on most cabinet nominations. he's been frustrated with republicans' use of the filibuster to block issues. reed acknowledged the change could benefit future republican presidents but he says he'll back down if the senate confirms seven appointees. >> a lot of excitement overseas as britain awaits the birth of the royal baby. kate is resting in her hometown about an hour outside of london. people who live there say they can't wait to welcome the newest member of the royal family.

herbert walker bush marked a milestone at the white house today. mr. bush helped deliver the 5,000th point of light award in a tradition that dates back to his inaugural address back in 1989. in that speech, he invoked the vision of 1,000 points of light to urge americans to help their neighbors. today president obama said mr. bush sparked a national movement of volunteerism. a couple from iowa received today's award for creating a nonprofit group that feeds hungry children around the world. you might want to check on the elderly in this heat. >> and pets. pets are huge in this heat, too. you leave them out back, you think they're okay normally. not in this heat. we reached a high of 96 degrees. the heat index, just 103. the hottest day so far this year. looks like we could be in for a few more. we have the three hs going on, hazy, hot and humid. you can see the haze overlooking

the city. the capitol building looking equally hot. 96 the high, as i mentioned, 103 today, the heat index today. current temperatures still sitting in the mid-90s at 94 degrees. wind out of north at 9 miles an hour. there's not much in the way of relief. doesn't matter if it's a 9 mile-an-hour wind or in the shade. you're not going to see much relief. 92 in baltimore, you're looking at annapolis, 86 there, a little bit of a bay breeze here, bay influence. 86 degrees but the dew point is higher. look at the heat index. current heat index in annapolis, 101. 107 in another town. these will go up in the next few days. as far as numbers go, we are going to be talking about the heat advisory. it includes d.c. and arlington

county. doesn't include fairfax, montgomery county or prince george's county except up towards baltimore. this is just for the urban areas around d.c. the urban areas will not be able to cool at night. that's the bigger factor here. this is what you can expect and for tomorrow especially, hottest temperatures of the year, heat index between 100 and 105. that's when the advisory is issued when the heat index gets over 100. the hottest time, between 2:00 and 6:00 in the evening. 95 in gaithersburg tomorrow, 98 in baltimore, 96 in washington. these are the actual temperatures but that heat index as i mentioned could be around 103, 104. 97 the actual temperature towards fredericksburg. 96 tomorrow, 97 on your wednesday. here's that hazy, hot and humid weather. it's continuing. we mention this will be the fourth heat wave so far this year. by far it with be the warmest, 98 degrees on friday. i think it will end on saturday. we'll go 93 on saturday.

the heat index close to 100 on saturday. anytime you have heat like this it takes something big to break it down. what's this one going to be? a strong frontal boundary. that could give us a chance for severe weather on saturday. we watch for that chance as we move on through the next couple of days, sunday and monday, back into the upper 80s. it's all this week, including the day on friday. we think friday may be the hottest day at 98. heat index close to 110 on friday. the last time we reached 100 was last year, july 26th of 2012. right now 98. last year we had seven 100 degree days last july, so far this year we have not had any at all. that's been good news. the average high temperature is 89 degrees. we'll be well above that as we make our way through the next couple of days. one thing to do for sure, stay cool, stay indoors if you can. >> a trip to the beach along lake michigan takes a dangerous

you're watching news 4 at 6:00. tonight, a little girl is in the hospital, her grandmother is dead after a bizarre multicar crash in stafford county. police say the driver of a pickup truck hit several cars on warrenton road also known as route 17. julie kerry spoke to the victim's husband about his sudden tragic loss. >> very well loved. very well loved. she was a sanely woman who would do anything for anybody. she was the love of my life. >> reporter: that's what blake collins wants people to know about his wife sue ann as he, relatives and friends try to

come to terms with her sudden death. wess at the scene say the tragic chain of event started near the stoplight in front of the walmart. that's when the pickup truck hit the first vehicle, a honda sedan. the driver of the honda started following the truck, calling 911 as he drove. further down the road, the pickup struck a second vehicle and then it hit the volvo driven by sue ann collins. her granddaughter was a passenger. this spray paint on the asphalt marks the horror that followed. sue ann was thrown into the southbound lanes and hit by another vehicle. grace brown lives next to the accident scene. her husband ran out to see what he could do while another good samaritan went to sue ann collins' car to help her 8-year-old granddaughter. >> there was another witness. he ran to the vehicle, cut her out of her seat belt. she kept saying i'm okay, i'm okay, where's my nana.

>> reporter: state police say the pickup ran off the road and strk a tree. the driver is identified as 49-year-old myron vaughn of stafford. the investigation continues into what caused vaughn to hit the three vehicles. charges have not yet been filed. sue ann collins' husband said right now he can only think of his wife, the loss. the couple had been working on their dream home for two years and planned to move in soon. >> we were looking forward to coming here and spending many years together. it didn't happen. >> reporter: in stafford county, news 4. we have an update on the condition of country music star randy travis. >> he's awake and making progress tonight. the grammy award winner is recovering after surgery following a stroke. travis you'll recall was admitted to the hospital with heart problems. doctors also elaborated on that today, saying he has scar tissue on his heart. the 54-year-old remains on a

ventilator but is breathing spontaneously and will eventually be taken off. doctors add he is communicating with his family right now. he's expected to stay in the hospital for several more weeks before being transferred to another facility for intense physical therapy. now, doctors say it will take months for travis to fully recover from his stroke. from the live desk, i'm jim handly. a controversial gun activist is out of jail tonight but a fairfax county judge says he cannot own a firearm until that case is complete. the judge allowed adam kokesh to post $5,000 bond today. he posted a youtube video that shows him loading a gun on freedom plaza on the fourth of july. kokesh is facing felony drug and gun possession charges. he's on supervised release. he's expected back in court in october. now that the jury's handed down its verdict in the trayvon martin case, the focus turns to

what's next. more rallies and protests are planned across the country. martin's family is considering a civil suit against george zimmerman, the defendant and the justice department is considering a civil rights case. eric holder said today it's important to use this tragedy as a learning tool. >> i believe this tragedy provides yet another tune for our nation to speak honestly about the complicated and emotionally charged issues that this case has raised. we must not as we have too often in the past, left this opportunity pass. >> some local community leaders are echoing that sentiment. prince george's county reporter now with what the leaders say needs to happen next. >> i've got a masters degree. if i put on a hood, that makes me a thug? >> reporter: to wait around the george zimmerman not guilty verdict, places like the

a few hours ago russian president vladimir putin says he hopes snowden leaves russia as soon as possible. hours earlier, the guardian report -- reporter green greenwald said snowden possesses sensitive documents that serve as a blueprint for the nsa's surveillance system. greenwald says snowden does not want to release the documents. >> we're waiting for the latest word out of lake meade. mannix admitted to leaking hundreds of thousands of documents to wikileaks. he said he did it to expose what he considered wrongdoing. an organization called explore.org has set up live streaming hd webcams in alaska's national park to record the famous brown bears there.

you're watching news 4 at 6:00. and welcome back, everybody. we're talking heat. you know that. if you were out and about today, you know how hot it was. temperatures that reach 96 today. the heat index got up to 103. 104 in some locations. right now we're sitting at a hot 94 degrees under mostly sunny skies. 87 by 9:00 and look at 11:00, around 84 degrees. very hot and humid, even at that

time. that's going to be the thing over the next few days. we're not going to cool much below 80 degrees. that's one reason why we have the heat advisory. expected heat index, it's not just the heat, it's the humidity. when we have the humidity you get what's called the heat index. that's the way it feels outside to your skin. heat index tomorrow at 104, 106 on wednesday, about 109 on thursday. and friday. those will be the hottest days we think, thursday and friday. actual temperatures will be in the upper 90s. that heat index will be well over 100 degrees the next couple days. that's why we have the heat advisory in effect for tomorrow. it includes all of d.c., alexandria and falls church. doesn't include fairfax, montgomery county or prince george's county. it's not because it's not going to be hot but these are the urbanized areas that tend to be the most affected here. check on the elderly, especially

those that don't tend to open the windows or have air conditioning. 96 in wood bridge tomorrow. 64 in annapolis. wouldn't that be nice? that's a typo. 94 in annapolis. we'll talk more more about the heat the next couple of minutes. the family of a woman who died while answering her iphone is looking for answers from apple. chinese media reports the 23-year-old flight attend and from the china was electrocuted when she picked up her iphone 5 while still plugged in. the woman's sister says she bought the iphone 5 at an official iphone store and she's hoping apple can explain what went wrong. the media reports say apple will fully investigate the incident. tonight, researchers believe aspirin could help reduce a woman's risk of colon cancer by as much as 20%. brigham and women's hospital in boston studied 40,000 women over a ten-year period. they found aspirin made a

you're watching news 4 at 6:00. a virginia fisherman is being credited with helping to save an endangered well. adam was 50 miles off virginia beach when he spotted a whale in trouble. it was caught up in a fishing line. he jumped into the water with a snorkeling mass, took out his knife and cut the rope. the whale was free and swam off.

he also captured the unexpected adventure on video. >> wow. >> brave dude. >> very brave. doctors are saying a boy who spent hours trapped in a giant sand dune is making good progress in his recovery tonight. doctors at the university of chicago medical center say nathan is now awake and doesn't show any signs of brain damage. he's still in critical condition but doctors say they expect nathan to be after a ventilator by the end of the week. he fell into the dune as he was playing at a beach in indiana on friday. it took rescue teams more than three hours to get him out. today family members are thanking the rescue teams and calling nathan's survival a miracle. >> we believe that god spared him for a reason. so we're very confident that god will give us back nathan whole. >> doctors say they expect nathan to go home in about two weeks. the dune collapse is still under

investigation. both girls hurt in a parasailing accident are both back in indiana. 17-year-old sydney good left a panama city hospital yesterday. alexis fairchild checked into a rehab hospital on thursday. the two best friends have yet to be reunited since that accident that happened on july 1st. good still needs surgery to repair fractures in her face. on saturday she walked for the first time since the accident. the teenagers fell into a condo and parked cars when the rope on their parasail suddenly broke. italian police are analyzing substances found in the hotel room of two jamaican track stars. the two tested positive for banned stimulants over the weekend. powell once held the women's 100 meter record and simpson helped jamaica win gold in the women's 400 meter relay back in 2004. hi, dan. >> hey, guys.
