welcome. katie: listen, you've been doing this for a long time. it must be so gratifying, people love you. and what is that like? >> i don't gage it like that, i mean -- [laughter] katie: come on, a little? >> honest to god, i'm happy that the band keeps making records and we get to do what we love to do. who doesn't want to go to work every day and love their job. katie: and you still love it? >> i love it. katie: as we said, you've been doing it for over 30 years. [cheers and applause] >> i know. katie: well, first of all, that actually leads to two questions. to what do you attribute your longevity? in a business that is tough to have the kind of staying power you and your band has had? >> oh yeah. well, luck always plays a part in it. that's just the truth. when fads and fashions came and went, we didn't jump on those boats. we stayed true to what we set out to do. so you build a trust, you build a trust with an audience and in our case, generations of fans. katie: the second question, when i say you've been doing this for 30 years is how have you managed to stay so damn young? [laughter] you look fantastic! honestly. he never ages. how have you managed to stay so young? i don't know anything from that either. when i pick these dirty jeans off the floor today, i said to my wife, katie gets dir jeans today because that's all i got at the house. i'm living out of a suitcase on the road, so everything i own is sitting with the band. and i just, i don't pay much attention. katie: oh, but ahe awe schalks stuff, you do take care of yourself. >> i do take care of myself. katie: do you run every day? >> four or five miles a day. i've always loved it. i'm an avid runner. [cheers and applse] katie: which is great.

>> i just like it. katie: it must be b hard, i was thinking if you're on the road, you're in the middle of this tour, is it hard to kind of take care of yourself, eat healthy, get enough sleep, all that stuff. that doesn't necessarily seem to go with the image of a rock star. >> i'm pickled. that's why i look so good. i've been pickled for 30 years. no, it doesn't. you go to bed at 2:00 in the morning, you get up at noon, you pray forgiveness for last night's sins and you start over. [cheers and applause] katie: you know, we sort of took a trip down memory lane jon, and we watched you through the years. and i have to laugh, because i mean everybody does when you see yourself in the 1980's, i had a mullet, it was so frightening, but your hair back in the 1980's, so funny. >> look, i'm just pleased to still at 51 to have it. it's mine. there ain't no plugs, there ain't no wigs, no weaves. katie: come here, yeah, it's all

[applause] what is the most diva thing about you? do you pull any diva stuff? >> oh sure. >> like what? >> go talk to the band. [laughter] they're going to come out and lay me away in a moment. they're right behind the wall going -- [laughter] katie: so you don't have any kind of things, you don't want all red m & m's. >> if i didn't have free clothes i would have no clothes. if i didn't have things that i stole from photo shoots and videos. there's four members of the and tico, richie, david myself. who do you think has the least luggage?

[cheers and applause] >> richie's mom is right over there. katie: she is? >> that's mrs. sambora right there. katie: hi mrs. sambora, how are you? >> and look at her, she's going -- [cheers and applause] katie: so nice that she came. that's so sweet. >> she's nodding, going i know it. katie: what about vices, do you have any vices when you're on the road? >> yeah. katie: like what? >> leave well enough alone. katie: i know that your mom is most proud of you because you're a family man. >> is that true? katie: yes, yes, which is true. i mean you have four great kids and you're a very hands on dad aren't you? >> oh yeah, you do what you can. absolutely. very involved. [cheers and applause] katie: one of the things we were talking about, just like our pictures as little kids are public, sometimes when things that happen to our family become public.

you had a scare with stephane, you oo long ago, where you got a scary call of her o.d.ing on some form of heroin. >> she's doing great. i appreciate everyone's prayers on it. in short, that problem is much more prevalant than any of us, well than i knew. and i cannot get over how many people i have met that said my son, my daughter, my son, my daughter. people i love, admire, respect, it happens to all kind of families all over. there's a lot of pressure on kids these days. access to gsings that my generation had. there are mistakes that are ma. i'm just blessed that she is healthy and whole and we've got through it. [cheers and applause] katie: that's good, that's good. so, how's dorothy doing. you guys were high school sweethearts, didn't you go to las vegas and get married?

in 1989? >> yeah. that's our high school pictures. why do all like high school shots kind of look like mug shots? katie: i don't know. >> nobody's too happy. my kids are like -- getting out of high school. katie: were your parents upset? >> my first manager tried to annul it. no one knew. my wife and i eloped on a day off in l.a. we jumped on a plane to vegas and said we'll be back before the bar closed. went to the graceland chapel, the cab driver was the witness and 24 years later, it's still. katie: wow. [cheers and applause] this isn't going to turn into a total jon bon jovi love fest, well maybe a little. but one of the things i really love about you, you've been married to her for almost 24 years now, and you know, listen, none of us live the life of a rock star, but all you hear about are women throwing themselves -- >> they do! club sandwich and living out of a suitcase for a year at a time, especially 30 years later. but then i get there and i go oh, this is why we do it. the rest of the hrs still stink but those three hours are pretty great. katie: we've got some fun facts about your tours. six weeks to build the stage, 19500 hours to manufacture the stage set and wall. a thousand road cases to transport equipment, lighting gear and wardrobes, 400 plus cups of coffee, meals a day forr the crew and staff. i mean, it is an enormous task. >> there's hundreds of people employed for periods of time. you know? for a year at a time, we keep the economy moving. [cheers and applause] it's a lot. katie: now, do you see yourself jon, doing this forever? do you think? are you going to get to a point -- >> the day that i'm the fat elvis and hawking the hits of the 1980's, it's over.

we're not doing the reunion tour. katie: as you pointed out, you started off the tow at the mohican sun. 2,000 snowed in fans and employs. at the time you invited a 16-year-old girl up on stage, and we have the video. let's take a look. [laughter] >> that's how she was on the inside. but my recollection is a little different because on the outside he's like. [laughter] [cheers and applause] >> that's the truth. i'm singing, and i have to keep looking like this because morgan's running all around behind me, she's working the crowd. so then, i'm watching down there in the front row, and i know what we've just done, you know. i'm up there singing away, i look down, the two of them are like looking at their pictures. [laughter] i see all this. i'm still performing. i'm looking down at them.

[laughter] katie: now, i know you touch on some pretty important social issues on your new c.d. tell me about, what inspires your songwriting just in general and what in particular for this c.d.? >> the consolidation of the work force in america. it addresses social activism. people who need to be involved because in this day and age if we come to the realization that the president, regardless of your politics is not the savior, he's a man, a hard-working man, but a man nonetheless. the truth, in reality, government can't do it alone, the private sector can't do it alone, but the collective we are the only way we'll roll this rock up the hill and get through this. [cheers and applause] so i had to address those subjects. and even in doing so, haveri trd to make it a point of the messages remaining timeless,

because if you're lucky you're going to sing those songs in 10, 20, 30 years. katie: you talked about acting earlier, jon. are you still drawn to taking part in roles and be in the movies or being on televisionon shows? >> no. it was a really i important par of my growing up. it was 20 years ago that i first took an acting lesson after writing a soundtrack to a movie called "young guns." but what it did was open me up to another fast set of the arts that i wasn't, i wasn't knowledgable of. katie: i guess your most recent role was in "new year's eve." in 2011. [cheers and applause] there's one very memorable scene. let's take a look. >> i've been plotting that slap all year. how i would walk up to you out of the blue when you would least expect it and slap you across the face for leaving me like that. and yoanu know what? it wasn't n'arly as satisfying

the headlines and those who are remaining active have to be patient so that government and the insurance companies run their due course. today i spoke to governor chris christie in new jersey about what he's doing to help cut through some of the inefficiencies, the bureaucracies, the red tape because those neighbors, my home, richie's mom's home was directly affected. she lives on the water in point pleasant. took out the ground floor, didn't i chrisovernors, quomey and christie have stayed on top of it. katie: you not only did the concert that raised what, $50 million? >> then the telethon on top of it, i think it's a rounded number up to about a hundred. but the things like the soul kitchen which were there before

disasters, we were there for years. you're taking care of a part of your community that is in dire eed all year around for years. places like the kitchen need to exist. and neighborhoods need to know that after we're not on the news with the disaster, that they still have to remain in their consciousness, involved in those communities. come i think the whole idea of soul kitchen is fantastic. i think a lot of your fans know what it's all about. but in a nutshell how would you describe it? >> f.c.c. a for purpose restaurant. there are no prices on the menu but don't think you're going to be served this great three-course meal and not participate. one of three ways. give us some money to pay for a meal or the guy next to you. or if you choose, come there and volunteer. we work in our gardens, busting the table, washing a dish. you're effectively making

change. president clinton came there and he said this is the model of community. the idea that pe ple sitting across the tables from each other, if it weren't for breaking bread would have never met.
