ravens select matt elam. >> hello, everybody. welcome to the white house. and welcome to the super bowl champion, world champion, baltimore ravens. [cheers and applause] i imagine there were times last year when these players were the only ones who knew they would make it here to show off this trophy. during the year they lost player after player to injury. they dropped four of their last five regular season games. in the playoffs they trailed denver by a touchdown. then in the super bowl after the lights came back on and the 49ers came storming back, this team's defense, the pride and joy of baltimore, stops a fierce offense four straight

7:07 pm
7:09 pm
>> welcome back to ravens kickoff. a scary sight. the jolly roger, the front of it. it is something here in tampa. it is a hot steamy evening here in florida as we get ready for preseason football between the ravens and the buccaneers. now we think about the ravens and the identity for so long has been about defense. ray lewis, ed reed, such big parts of that. they are no longer here. so many new faces, and to talk about it, let's talk about dean peace, the offensive coordinator. when you saw all these changes,
7:10 pm
what was your initial reaction? >> i knew that ozzie and john and steve would have a plan. you hate to see everybody go, but that is just part of this business. every year you lose guys you really like and are good players for whatever reason. we knew that ozzie would have a plan. >> he didn't let you down at all. you think of the guy who brought in chris canty, spears and others. how well are they background ravens? >> the first three guys you mentioned are all very good pro's, and they have spent a lot of time in this league, so they know how to prepare. the rookies are still on their way with that, and they all have to learn our system, but they all have been doing well in camp. >> you have an idea of some things, but you don't know until you get on the field. talking about getting these guys to gel, what do you want to see from them? >> we are just going to call
7:11 pm
our game. it is not a big-time specific game plan. it is more of our base game plan. at the same time, we will do some things. we want to see how much they know and whether they can play together. matt elam out of florida, and he looks special. is he making the leap to the nfl as far as the speed of the game? that is the big difference, right? >> that is something we will find out tonight. a practice is controlled, and they know what is coming. tonight is gametime. we are anxious to see how he does. >> so are we. thanks for your time. we appreciate it. >> thank you. >> we hope everybody stays healthy. what we want to do is take a look at the defensive depth chart. you will see some different faces and names there. we are going to start up front with the defensive line. those in white are returners, new guys in yellow, arthur
7:12 pm
jones, and haloti ngata. chris canty is 6'7" and lean. he is not what you expect out f a defensive lineman. brandon williams, a giant nose tackle. spears has been on several nfl teams. let's take a look at the linebackers. once again, there is no ray lewis. terrell suggs, maybe the new vocal leader. jameel mcclain listed as number one, but still on the. u.p. -- the p.u.p. list. the coffees love elvis dumervil. as far as the defensive backs, not as much change there maybe. webb, he looks like his old self coming off a turn a.c.l. and right now it is james ihedigbo ahead of matt elam. great battles to be fought.

7:16 pm
the phrase new season has never been more appropriate than the 2013 start for the ravens. . an white, qadry ismail this is brad new. >> they tried to get better, and i think they did. feel find out how much better than they are. >> huff, brandon williams williams, a lot of new faces are going to be on the field. but it is going to be a better defense. if you can play the run better, can you play defense better. >> joe flacco is still taking snaps and throwing the ball. what is new on offense is really the new relationships joe has to build to make sure the passing game work. >> certainly the one guy you can depend upon is tree smith
7:17 pm
-- torrey smith. anquan boldin is no longer there. you have to look at demar dotson, jones and others. they are battling it out to get that chemistry going with joe flacco, the new security blanket if you will. >> we get you set for the preseason opener, the newest chapter in the ravens history. year number 18 starts to unfold tonight in tampa. back to you, pete. >> thank you, gentlemen. look forward to the call. we have talked about new faces on this team. two of them, marcus spears and chris canty, they are familiar. they spent time together with the dallas cowboys in 2005. they had some familiarity with each other, and it helps >> they have both just passed their 30th birthdays, both in a new situation, both ravens now. with the wisdom of the years but the excitement of rookies. and for marcus spears and chris
7:18 pm
canty, when thoughts return to those early days, it is as teammates as dallas cowboys. speiers was the 20th player taken in the 2005 draft. canty dropped to the fourth round, but once training camp began it was a whole new ball game. >> i remember when marcus and i were drafted in dal as together. it was an exciting class to be with marcus, barber and burnett. it was a tremendous opportunity for us to come together and develop. >> we came in isaiah wide open, bushy tails. you line up against adams, lonard allen and davis, big guys like that who has been playing great football for a long time. that has a lot to do with being the type of players we are now. bill parcells was our first coach. it was a wealth of knowledge. >> coach parcells threw us into the far. i remember my first nine on
7:19 pm
seven, and they double-teamed me. i remember thinking i don't know if professional football is for me. coach said if you can survive with these guys, you will be all right. that was my goal every practice, just try to survive. >> they spent four years together in dallas, posting winning seasons each year, going 13-7 before falling to giants. canty wound up there, where he became a world champion. spears says he owes him one. >> he has been playing good football. he has a super bowl championship, so i give him a hard time about that. he owes me one here. >> but canty was a surprising cap casualty in new york, signing with the ravens in early march. spears signed five days later, and it was not by coincidence. >> he called me immediately
7:20 pm
before he came on the visit and said tell me about the situation, what are they trying to do, tell me about the facility? i said this is going to be a good situation for you. we are going to have an opportunity to compete for a championship here. this is what you want. let's come together and try to get you a ring, big fella. >> he gave me some great advice , said it was a good atmosphere. me and chris are cut from the same cloth as far as what we like about a football team. i immediately trusted his judgment on how he felt about it, and i followed suit. >> marcus and i have a friendship beyond the field. i want to be sure i am honest with him so you can make the right decision himself and his family. that is ultimately more important than football. i wanted to make sure i was as honest as i could be with him in helping him make that decision. >> now, reunited in search of a world championship on a defense defined by its talent and work ethic, a defense that is coming
7:21 pm
together. >> i'm starting to ens that our defense is having the opportunity to gel. coach is putting us in a lot of competitive situations with the offense. that is bringing us closer together as a unit, and forcing us to work together to be situation. those are situations we are going to be in throughout the preseason and the regular season. >> i am chomping at the bit. i am excited to get camp over with and start playing real football of the i know we have time in camp left, but i am more a season kind of guy. i need to get playing some other color jerseys. are >> that is no kidding. they have been feisty in training camp. not so much fights, but very testy back and forth, looking forward to hitting somebody of another jersey color. fun joining a team winning a super bowl if you have one.

7:26 pm
changes. beginning this season, ball carriers ma no longer strike would be tacklers with the crown of their helmet. specifically, for the play to be against the rules, the ball carrier would have to line up the defender, lower his head and strike with the crown of his hem. that is now a 15-yard penalty. remember, if the ball carrier angle, nder are at an the play may still be legal. another split-second decision for the men in stripes. another nod to player safety on both sides of the ball. >> one of the things to think about, preseason game number one. maybe not that big a deal? think about for the ravens rookies. their first time to wear the ravens uniform and play in an nfl stadium. always fun to see how they handle their emotions. they have already played on big stages in college, but this is different. this is hotter than it has been
