>> and "good morning, washington," it is monday, august 12th, i'm scott thuman. >> and i'm jummy olabanji. we're going to start with weather and head over to meteorologist jacqui jeras this morning with a check of your forecast, jacqui. >> hey, good morning, guys, a decent start overall today, it will feel like summer. warm and sticky. look at our temperatures already in the he 70s in many areas, 75 in d.c., 70 mans, 72 in culpeper where you have a little bit of fog this morning as well, 69 in dulles and 68 degrees in gaithersburg. so our weather headlines for today, it's going to be warm with a few thunderstorms possible late today but the large majority of the day will be dry. tomorrow is when things will kick up with more widespread showers and thunderstorms so a few could be on the severe side especially south and east of the metro and much cooler weather is on the way for the middle and latter part of the week along with a lot of sunshine. more details on that coming up

in your 70 just a few minutes away from. the belfort furniture weather center let's go to wtop, rob woodfork is in this morning, good morning, rob. >> good morning, jacqui. it continues to be a pretty pleasant commute so far on the interstates. we'll start off with a shot of the beltway on connecticut avenue, things are moving along at speed, no incidents or accidents slowing you down in maryland and virginia. on to our maps where we have a look at the overnight work zone on 355 southbound after jones bridge road, you will get by single file to the right. no major delays associated with that as of now but expect that to build if they continue to keep that in place for the next hour. no reported problems with you're traveling i-95 in maryland, all lanes open there. moving along at speed on 29 and the b-w parkway. inside the beltway still dealing with the earlier incident. we'll get to that in a second. right now 95 moving along well from quantico and points to the north, looking good getting over the purple heart bridge towards

newington. inside the beltway 295 southbound the ramp to eastern avenue still dealing with that-on-turned truck. it had been along the left side, so you may have some slowing getting off that ramp, but the through lanes on 295, those are unimpeded. rob woodfork live from the wtop traffic center. jummy and scott, back to you. >> thank you, rob. our top story this morning, the death of a woman in st. mary's county has now been ruled a homicide overnight. >> that's right, our john gonzalez is live in the satellite center this morning with the details of this story. john. >> jummy, a sad story, the family of this california woman was holding out hope but more unanswered questions as police search for a killer. detectives in st. mary's county are not saying exactly how moneta strickland has died but an autopsy confirmed this was a homicide. for days it was deemed a suspicious death which promised police to get involved. the 32-year-old went missing last thursday and this past weekend members of a search team

found her body near three notch trying in mechanicsville, her car was parked at baguette park at laurel park, a large park with play areas. family members said she often went to the area ring but can't believe someone would hurt her. strickland's mother said moneta had her whole life ahead of her. recently got engaged. police questioned her fiancé but right now they tell us they don't have a motive or suspects. she was planning to get married this coming march. it was her fiancé who found her car at the park and called police, canine units were able to track her scent. the family initially became suspicious when she didn't report to work last week. she was a nurse for med star at st. mary's hospital. it's a busy time at that park. police hoping someone saw something out of the ordinary. reporting live in the satellite center this morning, john gonzalez, abc7 news. >> ok, john, thank you. we know one man is dead after being hit by a car in prince

george's county. this happened overnight in upper marlboro. the driver did stay on the scene and police say alcohol was not a factor. >> and we're following another developing story out of d.c. this morning. one woman is in the hospital after an apartment fire in southeast. >> brianne carter joins us now live from that scene. she's got the latest. brianne? >> well, scott, this fire taking place in an apartment complex here in southeast d.c. we understand according to authorities that one woman was transported to the hospital with burn injuries. her condition kitchen at this point is not known. police and fire were first called out here about 3:30 this morning and people here tell us on the scene that they believe that the police were able to help get some of the people out of the building and so thankfully no one else was injured in this, just that one woman taken to the hospital. fire officials tell us the fire was contained to one second-floor apartment, that there was just some smoke in other apartments. some of the residents have already been able to go back

inside while they continued to investigate this. firefighters do remain on scene here as they continued to make sure that that fire is out. we do understand the cause of this fire remains under investigation. reporting live in southeast, brianne carter, abc7 news. >> all right, bri, we'll check back in soon, thank you for that update. a 2-year-old boy is safe this morning after the murder of his mother and a friend set off a nationwide amber alert. isaiah perez was found wandering around the housing project not far from his home. police found the woman's body. police arrested two men but have not said what the connection at this point may have been to the woman or the boy. >> these people did not want to talk to us whatsoever. she didn't make any comment. she says it looks like we're all in trouble now. >> meanwhile, the other side of the country, an fbi agent killed james dimaggio and rescued a kidnapped 16-year-old girl. horseback riders came across

>> all right, 5:09 on this monday morning as you kick off a workweek and not too bad of a forecast out there. >> no, and as jacqui is telling us it's like summer returned although it disappeared last week. >> it's going to be a brief return, that's for sure. a big cooldown by the middle of the week. a couple issues we're dealing with already this morning. first of all, it's on the warm side. 75 degrees. our dew point is at 69 so we've got a lot of moisture in the air and some of that is turning into fog south and west of d.c. now, the national weather service, this just in, issuing a dense fog advisory until 8:00 this morning. this includes places like culpeper, stretching down into orange. so be aware of that. an advisory is issued when visibility drops down to quarter mile or less. let's check what the numbers look like this hour. third of a mile in culpeper. orange is less than a quarter mile. look at that, winchester about two and a half and two and a half in manassas. we're fine in d.c. and the

immediate metro area but use a lot of caution because the fog may be a little patchy even in the city limits. stress forecast for today, all out of here by 9:00, partly cloudy skies, 76 and partly sunny, warm by noon and 88 degrees at 5:00 with an isolated shower or thunderstorm possible late in the day but overall a pretty good looking day. talk about the cooldown in the seven-day in a few minutes. it's time for traffic, here's rob. >> jacqui, we're enjoying-free conditions. right lanes getting by the work zone in bethesda. may see things build but no major delays associated with that just yet. looking good on 270 north and southbound, should find everything operating in the green, free according to the mapping system. 66 moving well, centreville and fairfax on through falls church towards the roosevelt bridge.

star's burn unit, scott. >> a plea hearing is scheduled today in the case of a man who prosecutors say posted fake sex acts on craigslist. an employee in the library facility in culpeper was targeting an ex-girlfriend. charged with stalking after men, sometimes six at a day showed up at her home wanting sex. the trial of eric rivera accused of killing shawn taylor will not happen today. a florida court delayed his trial until september 16th. taylor died in november 2007 after shot during a robbery at his miami home. four men, including rivera, are charged in taylor's death. a fifth man accepted a plea deal in exchange for his testimony. >> 5:16 is the time right now. we're going to get a check on weather. jacqui joining us now to talk about the forecast. >> yeah, i mean, you know, not too shabby out there for --

>> no, it's going to be great. i've been looking for 90 again. and we're going to get there. seriously, we couldn't go through all of august, right, without one 90-degree day. and i hope we can see one more to the tend of the month. we should get close today. it will feel a lot like summer again. by the middle of the week you're saying taste of fall. 75 degrees is our temperature. that's where we're starting this morning. the dew point's at 69. so it's warm and a little bit muggy and we've got a little fog that's developed south and west of d.c. keep that in mind for your drive in this morning. 69 degrees at dulles, 66 at gaithersburg. your temperature in martinsburg this morning also 66 degrees, 72 in culpeper. one spot's getting quite a bit of fog this morning and 70 degrees in fredericksburg. if you take a look at the satellite and radar a couple showers tonight in southern pennsylvania but it's steered clear of the metro area here but you can notice some of the cloudiness that we have and that's going to stick around for

thought i looked like the bad by in "the lost boys." remember that movie anyone? anyone? rob has our commute. >> it's been a while since i've seen that one. right now on the roadways you're not seeing much in the way of delays, no incidents or accidents on the interstates close, watch out for the work zone in bethesda, 395 southbound headed between jones bridge road and shelled danham drive. expect to see things starting to build a little bit now as we're now almost midway through the 5:00 hour. folks traveling inside the beltway on 295. no major delays on the through lanes. those should all be open. but that southbound ramp to eastern avenue still tied up along the left side with that overturned truck so you may have a little bit of an issue skirting around that but it is indeed passable as of now. also just coming in with a crash along the southeast southwest freeway. crash blocking the left lane.

>> around the nation this morning police don't know why a new hampshire man killed his 9-year-old son before taking his own life. police say that shooting happened during a supervised visitation with the boy at the ymca in manchester. a rabbi said the boy sent an e-mail beforehand and suggesting he was suicidal.

>> he just left his younger brother in israel, sudden heart attack in the middle of the night and when i saw him when he came back he clearly was not himself. >> the rabbi said he had no concerns about the man's well-being before receiving that e-mail. police said the man threatened his son and the boy's mother in the past. >> here's a story you have to see and hear. a 13-year-old louisiana boy is facing charges this morning after allegedly crashing a pickup truck into a city bus. police said the accident happened in shreveport when the teen went through a stop sign. the crash injured at least a dozen people including that teenager. he's charged with driving without a license, careless operation and running a stop sign. >> now to a happier incident involving a 12-year-old boy in north carolina. he was vacationing with his family in arkansas when he found a 5.16 carrot honey diamond. he found it in the crater of diamonds state park, the only diamond producing site

off the case bridge running up on porks the eastbound freeway near the exit for 12th street got a crash blocking the left lane. emergency response en route there also on the westbound side of the freeway, disabled vehicle blocking the right lane. use caution if you're coming in and out of d.c. via the case bridge. coming in with an incident on the southbound ramp to the key bridge. that's blocking the ramp with a stopped truck. park police is on scene, hopefully that will be cleared by the time you get out the door but as of right now no access to that ramp. moving along to the work zone in bethesda, 355 southbound after jones bridge road, continue to expect to get by single file to the right for the time being. folks traveling on 95 in maryland should find all your travel lanes open in fact, you're getting from 32 to the beltway 12 minutes, right on time there. traveling 95 in virginia also enjoying quiet conditions. as you can see we're operating

now, police and fire were called out about 3:30 this morning and they got on scene, they said there was a fire inside one of these apartments. the good news is it was contained to that apartment, just smoke went into some of the other apartments. now, some of the people out here waiting to be able to find out when and if they're going to be able to get back inside their homes. firefighters still on scene, making sure everything is safe. the fire is now contained and put out. now, at this point, again, the only injury we are aware of is that one woman taken to the hospital. her condition at this point is unknown. firefighters tell us that the cause of this fire remains under investigation. reporting live in southeast, brianne carter, abc7 news. >> all right, thank you, brianne. 72 degrees, 5:36 on this monday morning. >> and we're following a developing story out of florida where a sinkhole has swallowed a resort near disney world. these are live pictures you're looking at right now. we'll have new details ahead on "good morning,

culpeper, orange counties and everybody south and west of there until 8:00. advisory is issued when visible drops below a quarter mile. got .8-mile in orange right now and five-mile visibility in winchester. be aware, use caution, we could have patchy fog in the metro as well but nothing dense expected. 77 degrees and partly cloudy at can. 76 by the noon hour. and 88 degrees this afternoon at 5:00 with a stray thunderstorm possible. thunderstorms could be strong or severe tomorrow afternoon. we'll talk about that and that beautiful cooldown we've been telling you about in your seven-day forecast just a few minutes away. right now we need to know what's happening on the roads. hopefully no livestock there, rob. >> certainly no livestock on the roadways but we have a couple of problem spots. we'll start off on the inbound case bridge right near the exit for 12th street. the crash blocking the left lane and then on the westbound side of the freeway, on the case bridge, disabled vehicle blocking the right lane. so no real easy way to get on or

off the case bridge through that stretch. also dealing with that disabled truck, actually, that overturned truck, rather, on the southbound 295 ramp to eastern avenue. that had been tying up the left side throughout much of the morning so continue to use some caution there. right now the through lanes on 295 should find them open both in the south and northbound connections. travel on the george washington parkway, through lanes are open but the southbound ramp to the key bridge temporarily block as park police work to clear a disabled truck there. no reported problems, though, on 66 or 395 headed for town. continue to watch that work zone after jones bridge road. last check we were getting by single file to the right and 270 continues to be a smooth ride, starting to pick up a little bit approaching germantown but, again, it's all volume, no reported incidents or accidents to slow you down. i'm rob woodfork live from the wtop traffic center, jummy and scott, back to you.

>> you're taking a live look out of florida. clermont area where vacationers are having big problems at a resort. they were evacuated this morning after a sinkhole cracked the foundation of the villa where they were staying. the section of that villa partially collapsed early this morning. another section is now sinking. two nearby villas have also been evacuated as a precaution. we'll monitor this story and bring you updates once they become available. >> we've got good news this morning for drivers. gas prices, they are down compared to last week. >> we love to hear that. we could actually see them drop even more as we head into the

fall months. >> good news for summer travelers. gas prices are coming down. the national average for a gallon dropped to $3.56, that's down a nickel from last week. >> never penny counts, it goes town your budget. >> this is just the beginning. by autumn, after the peak summer driving season, it could drive down to $3.40. >> it would be a great thing for me. i'll come into the city more often with my car. >> after three straight years of rising prices the gas average for next year is expected to be $3.37, the lowest average since 2010. don't look for prices to fall much more. >> the days of the national pump price below $3 is likely a thing of the past. >> just last month gas prices shot up 15 cents in one week causing big pain at the pump. but today prices are better. according to one gas survey, charleston, south carolina, has the nation's lowest average price at $3.27.

he took this picture of a sun dog on saturday. i saw that on my drive home on 495 on saturday as well. there you can see the reflection in the clouds from the sunlight creating that nice little rainbow. did anybody see the% yesterday this weekend, cloudy to be able to see them, if you saw them on saturday night, we would love to see them, tweet it to me or send it to the facebook page. the crowds are a problem in order to see the great shower. it's been going all week long. we have a few breaks in the cloud, you could possibly see it before the sun comes up half hour from now. a few showers in pennsylvania but steered clear of our area. more clouds than anything else in d.c. 75 degrees, it's kind of a warm start. a couple 60s. 68 in gaithersburg. winchester 64, you guys are seeing the fog there. fog in culpeper with 72 degrees. our stationary boundary is parked on top of us.

warm and humid to the south of us but up here, that's where we got the cooler air and that's going to dive our way as we head towards the middle of the week and bring us that refreshing shot of fall-like conditions. in the meantime, our futurecast today showing mid to upper 80s, even pushing 90 degrees this afternoon. a stray shower or thundershower is possible this evening but really, i think we'll see most of the action by tomorrow morning and continuing on and off through the better part of the day. a few of those storms could be strong or severe especially to the south or east of the metro and i think this will clear out by late in the evening and the rest of the week looking fine. forecast today, patchy fog early, otherwise partly sunny, isolated thunderstorm. 86-91 this afternoon and tonight a few showers and thunderstorms possible mainly towards morning, 67-74 degrees. all the good stuff, meteorologist adam caskey is going to need those sunglasses later this week for sure and he's got them on this morning and how can we get them, adam. >> yeah, you'll need sunglasses

uv protection. we have a taker. we have a taker. all right. queen latifah show coming to abc7, high five, buddy, good morning. let's go to rob right now with the commute. you're on tv, wave. >> all right, adam, it's looking pretty good in silver spring so far and we're going to update a couple incidents going on in the district right now. traveling inbound on the case bridge, we had that crash that was right near 12th street. that has been moved off on to the main avenue ramp so you should find the travel lanes open there but they are clearing that off of the roadway. and then on the westbound side of the freeway, getting over the case bridge, that disabled vehicle, you're getting by in two lanes to the left but there's no major delay involved with that incident. they also cleared the earlier crash on the ramp from december 295 to eastern avenue, should find the lanes and the ramp open. moving along on i-95, northbound near route 23, crash on the right shoulder but debris in the right lane according to callers
