[cheers and applause] michael: but i'm wondering for that role, do you have to get in shape for that role?
9:29 am
[laughter] >> no. the problem would be if i got out of shape for that and then had to go back into "newsroom" again, that's just physical. the mental to go from will mcavoy who is this brilliant educated smart anchor to an i.q. of eight, there's like an intellectual free fall that's got to happen. and i'm a little concerned about how i'm going to come out of that. [laughter] i may not come out of that. [laughter] he is so stupid. [laughter] so, we're going to have a great time. jim carrey is excited. we're excited. it's been 20 years. michael: 20 years already. >> yeah, next year. [applause] michael: we're back with jeff daniels, star of "the newsroom" play u said earlier you anchor will mcavoy. so what's going on in will's life is he going to be nicer this season? >> not necessarily, no. he tries. he tries and then he has an impatience in him that just, you know, blows.
9:33 am
but he is making an effort to -- he has a crisis of confidence. he understands that people don't like him. and so he's working on that and mckenzie is a big help. rebecca: it's an erin sorkin show who writes a lot of dialogue how do you guys memorize all that? it's rapid fire. >> you have to. we shoot it over a period of six, seven months and every weekend, it's like cramming for an exam. you're just in the hotel or the apartment with a script. we have a lot of new york theater actors that are on the show. and on broadway, you have a lot of dialogues. so for us, it's not that different. the amount of time we have to memorize is a lot shorter, but there are tricks. if there's a line that has three p's in it, you go ok, p, p, p. unlike stepping stones across a river. but eventually, it's just walking around in the dark with your script and repping it and repping it and repping it until you can't stand the sound of
9:34 am
yourself. michael: if you miss one word, then you have to -- >> yeah, that's like broadway. you're flying -- we did a play and that was 100 miles an hour. you're not supposed to miss a word. when we interrupt each other on "newsroom," that's the last word and she comes in with that. rebecca: and your costars from "god of carnage" hope davis and marsha gay hart are on "newsroom." >> that's a great reunion. wish we could have jimmy gandofini. but it's been great to have hope and marsha on. jim was great. he really helped me during "newsroom." because i asked him how do i, you know do, this tv series on? you've got to carry on. he would check up on me. he would e-mail me. how are you doing? and i go i'm drowning. he would give me advice. he was a great guy. i miss him. michael: he did the "sopranos" so he knew what you were going through. >> sam is a good man.
