stabbing. a defiant president obama declares the world's credibility is what's on the line when it comes to syria. an ariel castro commits suicide in prison. >> i understand that the public in general is probably going to say well, good riddance, but this is a human being. >> does his death cheat his victims out of justice? an afternoon evacuation in maryland. hello, everybody. i'm jim handly. >> we begin with a developing story in prince george's county. a wick of the courthouse had to be evacuated after dozens of people got sick. that courthouse on main street in upper marlboro and chopper 4 flew over the courthouse shortly after the evacuation. emergency vehicles were there. several people hanging outside the courthouse. and news 4's bureau chief tracee wilkins joins us from the

courthouse with an update. tracee? >> reporter: if you look behind me you can see they have the command buildings out right now. but employees for the ward wing will not be going back into work today. let me show you what it looked like earlier. we're talking about 500 people evacuated from that wing of the courthouse. they did this as a safety precaution. now, they had several dozen folks, about 45 people to 50 who were checked out and some trucks they had set up out here to just make sure people were okay. they set up a triage unit and tested all of these individuals, people who work within the courthouse, and everyone tested just fine. no one was transported to the hospital. this is the crazy thing. starting at 8:00 a.m. this morning, employees were complaining about coughing. feeling nauseated, some dizziness and a strange smell in the courthouse that smelled like something was burning. they were evacuated shortly after 1:00 p.m.

and a lot of employees who i talked to told me that they were frustrated about waiting so long for the evacuation. but again, when they checked everyone out, folks were fine. some people still complaining of dizziness. no one sent to the hospital. everyone sent home for the day. and they're expecting people to be able to return tomorrow. they did test for everything. from c.o. to whatever gas may be leaking in the building. did not find any issues. i'm tracee wilkins, news 4. now to exclusive new details this afternoon. the death of a university of virginia college student. news 4 learned police are investigating if 19-year-old mary shelly goldsmith was killed by a popular new drug in headlines this week. shelly was a popular sophomore and died over the weekend after collapsing at a club here in the district. news 4's scott mcfarland is live at the live desk with more on what we're learning.

>> news 4 learning police are investigating if she took the drug molly. according to sources, when paramedics were performing ceo, someone around her said she had taken molly and had come up on a bus from uva. goldsmith was taken to providence hospital where she was pronounced dead. the cause of her autopsy has not been determined. right now an autopsy is being performed. we will most likely not know the result of the tests for weeks. she was a jefferson scholar at uva. the drug molly has now been linked to several recent deaths. two at a concert in new york. one in boston just this past week. at the news 4 live desk, i'm scott mcfarland. we have breaking news on the crisis in syria. the senate foreign relations committee has just approved a resolution authorizing the use of force in syria.

secretary of state john kerry and other cabinet members testified yesterday, and with today's resolution passed, they were on the other side of the capitol testifying for the house committee on foreign affairs. meanwhile, president obama is making his case overseas tonight. he stopped in stockhome on the way to this the g-20 summit in russia. at a news conference he rejected suggestions that he set a red line for action against syria. he says it was set by congress when he ratified a treaty, condemning the use of chemical weapons. meanwhile, russian president vladimir putin says he may change the vote if he sees concrete proof that assad's regime was responsible for the attack. he announced he would go to congress before taking action in syria. the dow jumping more than 96 points today. the nasdaq gaining 36. and the s&p 500 closed 1 points higher on the day.

we are tracking the latest developments out of ohio where late last night the body of ariel castro was found hanging in his jail cell. castro was just beginning to serve a life sentence with no chance of parol for kidnapping and raping three women and holding them for a decade. jay gray has the latest from cleveland. >> the man who held three young women hostage for a decade, chained and tortured inside his home. >> i'm just sick. >> lasted only 34 days in solitary confinement. guards say ariel castro hanged himself late last night inside his ohio prison cell. in a written statement, the prosecutor who put castro behind bars called him a coward, saying, quote, this man couldn't take for even a month a small portion of what he had dished out for more than a decade. >> i think he had to sooner or

now to a deadly story involving a stabbing. a 17-year-old student is dead today. three others were injured. the stabbing occurred around 7:00 at spring high school. three people are in custody this afternoon. it's not clear if they all go to the school. police believe the stabbing began after a fight.

the school is closed until further notice. other schools in the houston region are under increased security at this hour. a lockdown at a connecticut elementary school is over after a scare over possible gunshots. police were called to cranberry elementary in norwalk after a teacher reported hearing shots fired outside. officers scoured the area but didn't find anything. they believe the noise may have been from a nearby construction site. 26 people were shot and killed last school year. should marijuana be legalized? here in the nation's capital it may come to a vote. kanye west accused of taking big bucks to put on a show for a world leaders with a long list of human rights abuses. of human rights abuses.

right now robert mueller is wrapping up his last day on the job. he was nominated by president george w. bush. president obama asked for his 10-year term to be extended to 12. he is the longest serving fbi director since jay edgar hoover who held the post for more than 30 years. mueller is being replaced by former deputy attorney. former president bill clinton is looking to change the public image of president obama's health care law. mr. clinton tried to explain the

advantages of the law today. during a speech at his presidential library he says women will no longer be charged more than men for the same procedure. and there is guaranteed coverage for people with preexisting conditions. republicans say the plan will raise the cost of health insurance. clinton says medical costs are already going down. >> they are cropping up all over the country as a result of attempts to come to grips with health care reform. but basic reimbursements on the quality of health care outcomes and not on the number of procedures performed. >> open enrollment for the affordable care act begins in one month, on october 4th. >> a move to legalize marijuana in the district is gaining momentum. the d.c. council already considering a law to decriminalize small amounts of pot. but a group of activists wants

to legalize it, and it wants d.c. voters to decide. news 4's mark segraves has more. >> reporter: the majority of d.c. council members have already signed onto a bill that would make having less than an ounce of marijuana a civil offense that results in a fine, like a speeding ticket. some activists say that's not enough. they want to be able to grow their own pot, and they don't want police to have an authority over it. >> people don't want to be harassed anymore. >> supporters appeared before the d.c. board of elections today. they want legalization on the november 2014 ballot for voters to decide. d.c. council member tommy wells who wrote the legislation says his bill isn't so much about pot as it is about the people who are getting arrested for smoking it. >> about 90% of those that are arrested in the district of columbia for using small amounts of marijuana are african-american. we have the issue of social

injustice. >> he says decriminalizing pot will only lead to confusion. >> people think it's legal, although it's not. and the black market is just going to have more customers, i think, because no one is growing it for themselves. >> i don't believe that growing marijuana in your home is really an issue of social justice. that's more about legalizing the substance. and i'm not sure our city is ready to do that. >> the bill to decriminalize marijuana is expected to pass the council and could be law by early 2014. voters can be asked for smoking pot should be legal in the nation's capitol. mark segraves, news 4. >> we have new information. it's about what happened in the hours in the hours that led up to the suspicious death of a mcclan teenager. a search warrant was executed on the home of a 20-year-old man who is believed to have been

with the 16-year-old two nights before she was found dead. her body was discovered on friday, august 23rd. the man tells police she was with him while he was drinking beer and smoking pot on wednesday night. david will have more about the warrant and reaction to the man who is named in it. police have identified him as 49-year-old from northwest d.c. officers found him at the bank on monday night near beach drive and joyce road. now molina's family says he worked at clyde's in chevy chase. kanye west the latest celebrity to come under fire for visiting a country that critics say violates human rights. the group criticizing west's recent trip to kazakhstan last weekend.

west performed at the wedding for the grandson of that country's president. the president is accused of suppressing the media and kidnapping the family member of political dissidents so he can maintain his rule. kanye west has not commented. >> right now firefighters are reporting to a scene in prince george's county. >> that's right. firefighters working what appears to be a yard full of cars in forestville. several cars have burned. thick smoke pouring out of the wreckage. the fire started this afternoon near pennsylvania avenue in the belt way. it isn't clear if it's a business area or storage for cars. nobody is hurt. investigators don't know yet how the fire started. i'm scott mcfarland. all right. things are about to turn cooler on us. >> that, they are. it's not so much the afternoon temperatures that will amazing us, but the morning temperatures

toyota is recalling 360,000 vehicles. the first involves the highlander hybrid made between 2006 and 2010 and the lexu lexus rx 400. both suvs can overheat due to a faulty transistor and can shut down unexpectedly. the second recall involves the is 350, 350-c and gs 350. a bolt in the engine can come loose and cause the vehicle to stop running. no accidents have been reported. owners will be notified by mail. and good news for chrysler.

car and truck sales are up in a big way. the company sold more than 160,000 vehicles last month. 12% jump over the same time last year. and the best august in six years. ford saw a 12% increase in sales. general motors up nearly 15%. analysts say the buyers are taking advantage of these low interest rates and good leasing deals. all aboard in just a few months a new way to get from d.c. to baltimore on weekends. and union station here in the district in early december. transportation reporter a adam tuss has the details for you. >> reporter: it's pretty incredible. for the first time ever you can ride a marked train between d.c. and baltimore on the week. a lot of people we talked to couldn't believe that you

testifying before a house committee when the senate committee passed that resolution. three people in custody in connection with a deadly stabbing in texas today at a high school. it happened in spring high school outside houston. four students were stabbed. one of them died. the school is closed until further notice. and police are investigating if a uva student who died at a nightclub took the drug molly. when paramedics were performing cpr, swurn around her said she had taken molly. and came up on a bus from uva. the cause of her death has not yet been determined. >> a woman with an interesting ailment is missing in montgomery county. her name is hanna upp, and it's

not the first time there's been a public search for her. news 4's megan mcgrath has more from kensington. >> hannalives right on facility. a coworker saw her walking around here, near kemp mill road and glen allen. this is miles away from the school. red flags really went up when her bag with all of her personal belongings were found on a footpath by a passerby near wheaton plaza. now upp has not been seen since tuesday morning, and adding to the mystery is the fact that upp was reported missing five years ago in new york city. after being gone for weeks she was found floating in the river by a stanton island ferry captain. she was diagnosed with ang extremely rare form of amnesia and didn't know who she was or what she was doing. now her disappearance in new

york and the the story of amnesia sparked debate and speculation in the new york press. and now her disappearance in our area. montgomery county police are not saying much. they only ask that anyone who has seen hanna upp to please give them a call. in wheaton for news 4. george zimmerman pulled over by police again in florida. scott mcfarland is at the live desk. >> zimmerman stopped in lake mary, florida. the video comes for the officer's chest mounted camera. the video shows zimmerman handing the officer his license. he then checks the glove compartment for his registration and tells the officer he does not have it with him. he was ticketed for more than $250. it's the second time been ticketed for speeding since being acquitted. unlike the first stop he did not have a gun yesterday. some of the same companies

concern and the concern of others in the military community about wartime fatigue among service members and their families, and making sure that we take care of our service members. that they are ready to enter into what may be this limited military strike or something that could turn into something bigger. but people are glued to the news and wanting to know what's going on in every way. and the biggest concerns are -- there is action to be taken. people are very concerned about why we're doing this. this is not another iraq where people felt like we were not given the truth, and then later it comes out that there weren't weapons of mass destruction, but that is why people are so glued

nidal hasan who went on the shooting rampage at ft. hood and was convicted had his beard forcibly shaved off. hasan would be subject to army grooming regulations, and he was shaved yesterday. court records show hasan has been growing his beard in the years after the 2009 shooting, a shooting that left 13 people dead and 30 wounded. hasan said he grew the beard because his muslim faith required it, and it was not meant as a show of disrespect. the army prift convicted of leaking thousands of classified documents to wikileaks is asking for a presidential pardon.

an attorney for chelsea manning fired paperwork yesterday. in the petition manning writes the decision i made in 2010 were made out of a concern for my country and the world that we live in. chelsea manning, formally known as bradley manning, is set to serve a 35-year prison in kansas. we're getting new details at a water main break in montgomery county. scott, what are you hearing >> we apologize. we're obviously having audio difficulty with scott's mike there. some yogurt cups are being taken off grocery store shelves today. a type of mold may be responsible for swelling in some of the owe gurtd cups. the affected cups came from the

clear book bag. a message about the policy was posted one day before the start of school on august 26th. and chicago public school officials say the principal made an announcement to students on friday that the policy would be strictly enforced on tuesday and made phone calls home to parents. >> the dean of students told me, the whole thing was we told the kids, but not one of them ever said they informed the parents. wron where they're getting this "we called the parents." cps says students were not turned away and all were given the option to give up their non-clear book bags so they could attend school. >> they were taking our purses and book bags and giving us plastic bags. >> most likely i would to search tonight to try to find one so i can go to school tomorrow. >> right now the death of a uva student.

it comes on the same weekend that two young adults died at a music event in new york after taking molly. derri derrick ward is joining frus the echo stage. >> reporter: this the biggest dance hall in the district. but something happened here saturday evening and police are investigating to determine why. sources tell news 4 witnesses at the scene told first responders the uva student had taken the drug molly. this comes from several law enforcement sources. they tell us as paramedics were called saturday evening performing cpr on mary shelly goldsmith, two people with her said she had taken molly and come up on a bus from uva that evening. she was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead at 7:44 saturday evening. right now an autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death. results are still pending. the first year jefferson scholar was rr
