from a fire engine. what makes this disturbing is these keys allow access to secure areas of the metro rail system, including tunnels. engine 105 seen here in a youtube video was the target of a theft. the engine is based at station 5 on south hayes street and is the closest to the pentagon. sources tell news 4 it was unattended during a medical call in crystal city about 6:30 last wednesday morning when two men removed items from the unlocked vehicle. the keys allow firefighters fast access to secure areas of a metro station including surface hatches and tunnels. metro issued a statement to news 4 that says the theft was immediately reported by arlington county to metro transit police and that appropriate steps have been taken to ensure that system security is not compromised. for safety reasons the keys must

be easily accessible to firefighters but some larger cities use secure box systems like this one that require a code to access them. the arlington county fire department released a statement to news 4 about the theft, it reads, measures have been taken to prevent it from happening in the future. details cannot be released for security reasons. >> now, what makes this theft puzzling and disturbing is that unlike an iphone or an ipad these keys would have no monetary value to a thief. so the motive is unclear at this point. reporting live in arlington, jackie vincent, news 4. >> thanks. a bloody end to the three-day siege of a shopping mall in kenya. the siege ended just after midnight today that's in kenyan time. at least 62 people were killed in the attack. many more were injured. the extremist group al shabaab has then responsible. six attackers were killed. more than six suspects were

arrested. kenya's foreign minister says it appears some of the victims and some of the shooters came from the u.s. the fbi is investigating those claims. some of the hostages stuck in the mall used twitter during that crisis. radio african journalist tweeted these comments, i quote him, bodies of children were everywhere. children. innocent little children. holding on to me, asking me where their mommies were. another hostage tweeted, i'm under mattresses. this might be my last tweet. #westgatemall. we're hearing from a woman in our area that got stuck in a stairwell during that rampage. >> a stairwell, go up one level to exit the parking garage since we had gone down to get into the parking garage. but the stairwell was connected to the shopping mall. so we were proceeding up the stairwell. we heard shots above us. we went down the stairwell and tried to exit on one of the floors and we could not.

so we remained in the stairwell for an hour and a half. >> she says she and her friend eventually got out through a supermarket. tonight new information on the navy yard shooter is changing the way the navy approves security clearances. the navy wants background checks to include all police reports involving the individual. today military officials revealed the background report on navy yard shooter aaron alexis left out the fact that he used a gun to shoot out someone's tires during a fight in 2004. family and friends of two more of the navy yard victims will pay their respects at funeral services tomorrow. 73-year-old john johnson's funeral will be healed in gaithersburg after a viewing tonight and one earlier today. kat clean garda's funeral is tomorrow. she will be remembered at a viewing at a memorial service tuesday evening in dale city. dozens of people forced to evacuate after a fik broke out in a silver spring hotel. it happened at the days inn on

13th street. shamari stone talked to some of the people. >> i'm supposed to go back to work tonight. >> reporter: rosslyn thurston stands on the concrete without shoes. she left them behind when she rushed out of her room at the days inn on silver spring. the fire broke out. >> i have been off a week because i didn't have nowhere to live. >> reporter: she along with dozens of guests evacuated the motel when their alarms went off. firefighters found heavy smoke, shooting out the roof when they arrived on scene shortly after 7:30. >> wow. it's amazing. it's just like wow. >> reporter: tonight they climb a ladder truck on the 8,000 block of 13 street, spray foam, and cut a hole in the second floor roof to put out the blaze. >> once they got the firefighters on the roof they were able to cut the roof open and peel the roof back to see exactly how far r how far the fire had spread. it appears as though the fire started at the ground level. >> reporter: right now we're bringing you closer to the

scene. you look down her and you can see all of this damage. firefighters believe that the blaze sparked right over there on the ground and traveled up this wood beam right here to the roof. they had to cut out the roof in order to put out the blaze. firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire. fortunately no one was hurt. but at least four rooms have water damage and they're unsafe to live? >> we're working with the hotel management now to relocate them. >> reporter: rosslyn thurston plans to get back to work as soon as she can get back on her feet with shoes. a deadly accident tonight in prince george's county as a train hit a man walking across the tracks. police are still trying to identify the victim. they believe he was crossing the tracks near route 1 near the end of kennedy street. >> it's tough if you are a pedestrian walking around. there's not very -- it's limited where you can actually walk. so you got a mile or two before

the next safe place to go. >> the accident canceled a couple of mark train trips and delayeded others half an hour. the trains are running normally now. tonight employees with the department of defense are being notified about what will happen if there is a government shutdown. the current government spending bill expires next monday. lawmakers fighting over our republican stop gap spending plan. that plan includes a provision to defund the president's health care law. the senate is set to take a procedural vote on that bill on wednesday morning. new tonight we're getting a closer look at what virginia voters are thinking about the candidates for governor. >> comes from a new poll by nbc 4 nbc news and marist college. now julie is here to break it down. >> democrat terry mcauliffe has taken a narrow lead. a reverse of their positions

since our last poll in may. the latest survey was taken september 17th through 19th. 43% of likely voters favor mcauliffe while 38% support and 10% still undecided. while that number for sarvis isn't big it is a clear sign that some voters are unhappy with both major party candidates. >> it's impossible to miss all those negative campaign ads on tv. what does the poll tell us about how voters are viewing that? >> seems to say those ads are taking a toll. right now ken seems to be taking the biggest hit. back in may more voters had a positive than negative view of him but now he is upside-down as the pollsters put it while 34% view him favorably, far more, 47%, have an unfavorable impression. mcauliffe is somewhat better. 41% have a positive view of him

while 34% have a an unfavorable opinion but his unfavorables have also jumped since may. >> always in these contests there's a gender gap. how does that play out? >> terry mcauliffe has a huge 18-point advantage over his republican opponent when it comes to registered female slot voters. 50% support the democrat while 32% vote for the republican. with men he does do better. 44% of registered male voters favor him compared to mcauliffe's 36%. that is a smaller edge. we will keep digging into the numbers all day tomorrow and be back with the results. >> we invite you to stay with news 4 coming up tomorrow morning we will breakdown lieutenant governor and attorney general races. on wednesday we will hear at 6:30 instead of 7:00 followed by

an incident involving raven's kick returner jo coby jones. jones was involved in an altercation last night in the district. it happened on a party bus in front of the opera ultralounge on i street. jones ended up with a bloody face. the tv show tmz first reported it. they took this picture. jones told police he couldn't remember who inflicted the wound. he reduced treatment. no charges were filed. lewis sans the incident shows a lack of leadership on the ravens team. tonight the news 4 i team uncovers an international ring of players invading your privacy for their profit. your doctors team, insurance information, even the medications you take found online and sold to anyone who pays up. tisha thompson shows why millions can be effected in this news 4 iteam investigation. >> reporter: you can find almost anything on the internet these days. but what if we told you with a few clicks --

>> i didn't know you could get all of this information. >> reporter: and a couple hundred dollars. >> you can sell all this stuff on the internet? >> reporter: someone can buy your private medical information online, intimate details on you and your doctors should know will only 1 or 2 millions are effected by medical identity theft. >> reporter: lisa is with the federal trade commission. >> it can happen in all sorts of ways. there can be insiders that are paid to steal information, from hospitals and nursing homes. >> reporter: there have been recent cases in the d.c. area. in 2012 more than 66,000 people put at risk after someone stole a howard university hospital contractor's laptop. in 2011 the company which provides health care for the military tricare lost tapes containing private information of almost 5 million people. >> some studies have end indicated that on the black-market you can get more for medical information than you can for social security number. >> that's my social, date of

birth, ip address. everything. my driver's license number. >> reporter: terry martinez was shocked when the news 4 iteam showed up at his door with private information we found for sell online. >> have you ever checked your medical records? >> no, i really don't -- i hardly ever even grow to the doctor. very seldom do i check that. >> he's not alone. we were able to find private information for people all over the dc area. physician information, insurance providers, whether people smoke, even amount of insulin doses taken each day. >> plays a big, big business. >> reporter: all in the hands of this seller. he says he got most of his current medical records from india where call centers gather information by phishing over the phone. >> you want to see people buying data, selling data like it was candy in a store. >> reporter: he wouldn't show his face but via skype from costa rica he agreed to explain how it worked when he himself was a telemarketer over seas.

>> what is your name, what is your doctor's name, we didn't even have the doctores name on it. we were just saying it. >> reporter: private details were often sold to medical companies that targeted people with health conditions and charged insurance companies for services and supplies. the ftc says everyone should check their credit report for unusual medical bills or charges. ask your health insurance provider for a list of benefits in your name. and never provide medical information over the phone from a caller. >> have your information, they have your information. you pretty much at to rebuild from scratch. >> howard university hospital says it doesn't think any private information on that stolen laptop was misused. after this incident it did toughen up security procedures. tricare said it could not comment on the case involving its lost tapes due to on going litigation. if you find out you have been a victim, you should file a complaint with the ftc and police and contact your medical providers. we do want to point out we did

even though we're on the cool side, nothing like that. 69 is the high temperature today. that is the coolest high temperature we've seen since may 25th. so very cool across the area today. that was with plenty of sunshine. low this morning, 56. current number though, 57. we're going to be a lot keerl than that 56 when you wake up toll morning. winds out of the north at about seven miles an hour. dew point at 45. what does that tell us? temperatures can still fall down towards that number. that's where they are right now in frederick. 45 degrees. 48, manassas. 50 down towards fredericksburg. you can see many areas already in the mid 40s. you know where we're going from here. storm team 4 radar, nothing to show. no rain. we're not talking about any rain not just any time soon but any time in the near future. we're talking the whole week and possibly even into the weekend. next seven days, not much rain to talk about. with clear skies you know that's not going to happen. with clear skies, too. another reason we will continue to cool. down to 44 in gaithersburg. 49 in frederick.
