frederick, in frederick county. he's been in there since after 3:00 p.m. it's been an elaborate process to get the rescue workers in position to extract him. they put the boards on to move around freely without knocking more water and mud into the hole. at one point, the worker was chest deep in heavy mud and water. we have seen them attach a rope to the worker and a breathing apparatus. he's exhausted in the trench. montgomery county fire is on the phone. how are we progressing at the scene? >> caller: good evening. we have the pads on either side. you can see the red structure between the patient and the pad. they are called air shores. what we do is we displace the energy, if you will, from the trench side so as we are digging out, that dirt does not return. we created a trench box around
5:32 pm
the workers and the patient. what you are looking at is it could be up to 1,000 pounds per square inch of pressure against this patient. we are careful on how we remove the debris around him. the water has been shut off. we have been able to mitigate that hazard for the patient for awhile. we were having to pump the water out of the trench and away from the patient. we will have medical technicians in the hole with him. we are administering oxygen to the patient as well as monitoring the patient's vitals. some of the things in any trench rescue we are concerned with are the issues of compression on his lower extremities, making certain when we do free him, that the potential rush of when we bring him out of the hole, we don't want a shift in his condition. so, we have paramedics in the
5:33 pm
hole with him. we are making good progress. this isn't an instantaneous rescue. it could take hours. we have to bring in, as you can see, they are bringing in warmed air around the patient. it is very cold. like i said, it's not something we can do in an hour. we have been over two hours now. we'll probably be, you know, at least another two hours on the worst case scenario. >> scott graham with montgomery county fire. thank you. a worker is still trying to be rescueed from the trench. back to you. >> another possibility of two hours. thanks so much. a man walking along the train tracks struck and killed. it's been 24 hours. police are still trying to identify him. tonight, his death is raising new concerns.

5:35 pm
turn to cross. they risk running across the tracks. >> reporter: we are on la fayette afternoon. the good news is, soon, in this area, there will be an official crossing over the tracks. >> in order to address that problem, a bridge and/or when it was originally set up, we didn't say what it would be. >> reporter: the bridge is part of the whole foods development. they have donated land, construction is expected to begin next year. in the virginia governor's race, democrat teri mcauliffe edged ahead with one day before the debate. mcauliffe has a five-point lead over cuccinelli. what do the numbers mean at this point? >> we have been digging into the
5:36 pm
numbers to find out what voters think of the candidates. we asked about an issue where we have seen an enormous shift, same-sex marriage. >> terry mcauliffe said kuch nellie would restrict women's rights. the poll suggests the ads have had an impact. 46% of registered voters say mcauliffe lines up with their issues like abortion. >> women's issues are important to me. and the abortion issues are important to me. >> i believe in women's reproductive rights. in that sense, i'm not a fan of mr. cuccinelli's position. >> reporter: virginia voters are a bigger fan of cuccinelli. 39% say cuccinelli is best for
5:37 pm
business while 36% say mcauliffe is a better choice. here is how one cuccinelli supporter sees it. >> i like his fiscal conservative approach. on balance, it's a close one, he would be better for business and a better governor. >> reporter: the poll checked in with voters on the issue of same-sex marriage and virginians shifted dramatically, almost half favor permitting same-sex marriage. following trends across the country. at 6:00, how voters view the scandals that dogged both campaigns. for mcauliffe, green tech and cuccinel cuccinelli, the gifts. >> julie carey, we'll hear from you at 6:00. as i said, they square off on the first debate tomorrow night. it's sponsored by the fairfax chamber of commerce and nbc 4.
