floor. >> i do not like them, sam i am, i do not like green eggs and ham. news 4 at 11:00 starts now. >> now tonight we're learning more about a gruesome discovery in a southeast d.c. apartment over the weekend. good evening. >> police found a woman's body decomposing inside the building onned ed adams street on saturd. they're not sure how she died, but neighbors in the building are on edge. >> some very sad, very nervous, and very scared. >> reporter: sandra jackson worries about what happened to her neighbor. take a look at her apartment door, yellow and evidence tape is here. d.c. police found camp's badly decomposed body on saturday. neighbors say it was inside a bedroom closet on the 1300 block of adams street northeast. >> had no idea what it was. we smelled it. >> reporter: neighbors tell me

they smelled the owed odor over two months. >> we hadn't seen her i was wonder where she was. her sister kept calling me on the phone, asked many had i seen her. >> reporter: police received a call to check on camp. they went inside the apartment and found her unconscious, unresponsive. and keep in mind the body is gone but you can still smell the foul odor. it is so strong that i can only be in this hallway for a couple minutes. camp's family doesn't want to talk. they're waiting for the medical examiner's autopsy report to determine the exact cause of death. at this point, police say this is a death investigation, but most people in this neighborhood have already made up their mind, they believe the autopsy result will confirm their suspicion of foul play. in northeast d.c., i'm shamari stone, news 4. a construction worker is recovering tonight after he was trapped in a trench in maryland for more than three hours earlier today.

it happened in frederick county near the lake. crews raised the clock this afternoon to secure the trench and then dig him out. the workers from pennsylvania. he was up to his waist in cold mud and water. they pumped hot air in to keep him warm. he's being treated tonight at shock trauma in baltimore. we're waiting to see what caused a transformer explosion and fire in prince george's county tonight. chopper 4 was on the scene earlier. pepco says nobody was hurt and no customers lost power. prince william county place have made several arrest of a murder of a popular high school football player. a total of six people have been locked up in connection with the case but police say the youngest suspect is 19-year-old samuels. she is the one that police say stabbed kenny diaz and killed him on saturday afternoon. police say their investigation revealed the stabbing was connected to an unreported armed

robbery committed against a frnd of diaz. >> they were all known acquai acquaintan acquaintances. >> on going relationship? >> yes. >> was that over drugses? >> yes. >> and that had been going on for some time? >> correct. >> police think they have all the suspects in the case but additional charges might be filed. election day in virginia is six weeks away now. tonight the candidates for li lieutenant governor went head to head on the stage. the candidates debated the issues at george mason's arlington campus tonight. northern virginia reporter is live in arlington to explain why this race is so important this year. david? >> doreen, folks may be asking themselves why do they care about this race? here's why. it's the lieutenant governor in virginia who has the tie-breaking vote in the state senate. as senate, mind you, that is evenly split between republicans and democrats. that means one of the two men we heard from inside this outer to

tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. that's followed by the debate between ken cuccinelli and terry mcauliffe at 7:00. it will be streaming live. the candidates for governor in maryland have new competition. attorney general doug gansler kicked off his campaign today with exactly nine months until the democratic primary. he's up against current lieutenant governor anthony brown who would be the first african-american governor in state history if he were elected. delegate heather will be the first openly gay governor. three republican candidates are also in the running. we are following a developing story in ohio tonight. some kind of explosion inside the columbus police department's headquarters. police asked people to evacuate and the nearby jail was place and lock down. police and fire crews are inside that building right now. there's no word yet though on what caused the explosion. police in columbus says homeland

security has been called to the scene. nobody was injured. right now on capitol hill a republican senator is still on the talking session. it's not a filibuster. but he has been at it more than eight hours right now. wendy? >> well, doreen, this is about the senator's opposition to the president's health care law and the looming government shutdown. cruz is talking nonstop on the senate floor since 2:40 this afternoon. even at one point reading dr. sus's "green eggs and ham" but this isn't a filibuster in the strictest sense because the tea party-backed republican actually supports the bill that he's holding up. it would keep the government running but it would defund obamacare and he's trying to lay it -- to delay the democratic-led senate from sending this measure back to the house because there aren't enough votes to keep that and

top obamacare provision in there. other republican leaders, they're not happy with him right now because it would give them even less time to come up with a new compromise that would avert the government shutdown before monday night's deadline. tonight president obama insisted that much of the opposition to his affordable care act is just politics, it's not substance. he said that while he was speaking at an event that was sponsored by the clinton global initiative in new york. we will continue to make his latest case for his health care reform thursday with a speech at prince george's community college. senator cruz meanwhile has vowed to continue talking on the senate floor until he's no longer able to stand. and a senate vote on this measure is still scheduled for tomorrow. at the live desk, back to you. >> thanks. tonight the police in nairobi, kenya, are coming through what is left of a shopping mall there to make sure that a terror threat is over. that country's president says the gunman who killed at least

they were just shooting. it wasn't -- i mean, there wasn't really -- they weren't asking any questions. they were just shooting. >> reporter: crawling, she and her friend made it to an employee break room in a nearby store and waited with 15 other people for five hours they hid listening to gunfire. she texted her father, please pray. i love you all very much, she wrote. >> you just feel so helpless. >> reporter: and out of nowhere, she says, an american security team showed up. >> when this american security forces guy came back and said, look, we've been under a lot of pressure to get you out. if you want to get out, we understand it's dangerous, but this is probably your best shot. >> she says it is too soon to tell whether she will go back to kenya. you can see more of her story tomorrow morning on the "today" show here on nbc 4.

council are considering taking a drastic step in the event of a federal government shutdown. if congress does not reach a deal by next week some council members say they will declare all 33,000 city workers essential which would keep them all on the job. the d.c. attorney general says that just might be illegal and would subject the city to heavy fines and punitive action. if the federal government shuts down, d.c. would be forced to close dmv branches, suspend garbage collection, and many other day-to-day operations. we're learning new information about last week's navy yard shooting. news 4 had the chance to sit down with med star's trauma team for an exclusive story. they said they were ready to make more patients but no one else came. >> we have an active shooter. one of four. i'll give you an update on the building location. several victims now. >> wes assembled all of the

trauma teams. we're just wait for word that people could start arriving. >> reporter: as soon as they got word of a mass shoot taat the ny yard the trauma team knew exactly what to do. >> this is what we're here for. >> reporter: that's because they're the district's only level i trauma center equipped to handle the rejohn's worst disasterss like the 2009 metro train derailment that left nine people dead and injured 80 more. and, of course, 9/11 when the pentagon was attacked. ten victims from the pentagon were treated by this team. >> you go through a lot of bad on paper and drills and practicing but when it happens, it's a little bit different. >> reporter: last monday trauma surgeons told us they were ready to treat at least ten patients but they needed to be transported quickly. >> in trauma there is a thing called the golden hour where the first hour after injury is a critical time to diagnose and begin treatment and

resuscitation of injuries. and so as time passes the golden hour is ticking away. >> med star can take four major. >> reporter: the first patient police officer scott williams arrived at 9:30 a.m., followed by two civilian women. one at 9:56. the other at 10:58 that morning. but after that, there was no one else. >> once they cross our doorway, we're ready. the problem is that unfortunately many of them didn't make it to cross our doorway. >> reporter: 12 lives were lost last month. a difficult fact for a team that was ready to save more lives. >> very rewarding when patients get here and we save them but part of it, too, there's a lot of patients lost. >> reflecting on the injured fatalities who didn't make it to us, that's very, very hard because we were ready for them. >> the two wound we civilians have been released from the hospital now. police officer scott williams is still in the hospital.

he was shot in both legs. doctors say his prognosis is excellent. we have been blessed with some absolutely spectacular weather. don't you think? >> i really do. i'm talking about this not just for the next day or two days but the next week. remember in spring we were hoping we would dp get spring like weather, cool nights, nice warm afternoons. that's what we're going to get for the next week at least. let's look outside right now. another very nice night. although a little bit on the cool side for some. this time of year we do start to see the cool nights start to creep in. afternoon low pressure is below 60 degrees. we're going to be below that once again today after a high temperature of 75 degrees. a low of 58 degrees -- rather, 51 degrees. the average is 59. eight degrees below that average low. once again though, that average high right around where we were today. record high today, 99 setback in 2010. just a few years ago. remember that day. that was a hot one. 99 degrees. the latest 99 we've ever seen in the d.c. metro area. 59 degrees currently. winds out of the south at five

miles per hour. notice the dew point. last night dew points were in the low 40s, upper 30s. that's how low the temperatures could go. i don't think we're going to be quite as cool as we were last night in parts of the area but still a fairly cool night. down to 50 in martinsburg. 48, gaithersburg. i don't think we're going the see the 30s like we did last night. 38 was a low pressure. 39, low pressure, manassas last night. 37 in frederick. i'm not expecting that. storm team 4 radar all clear. it's going to stay that way as we have clear skies across the region. more clear skies tomorrow. that is going to allow for plenty of sunshine. we're going to warm up after a fairly cool start. 42 in frederick. 43 in manassas. inside the d.c. metro area and the beltway i think we stay above that 50-degree mark. 54 degrees is what i'm going for downtown. bus stop forecast tomorrow, take the jacket. you needed them this morning. 42 to 54 degrees.

su rise tomorrow at 6:59. tomorrow is the last day the sun will rise before 7:00 a.m. and the last day it will set before 7:00 p.m. -- after 7:00 p.m. our days continue to get shorter and shorter. tomorrow you'll know that. 12 hours of daylight and nighttime tomorrow. 77, the high temperature tomorrow. 74 in gaithersburg. so even with that cool start we will warm up very nicely. in the next few days, this gray weather continues. highs in the upper 70s. lows in the 50s to lower 60s. and that trend continues right on through the weekend. look at saturday and sunday. looking really nice here with temperatures in the mid 70s and then 78 degrees on monday. one little fly in the ointment. that would be the fact that we do have a storm system that could affect us off the coast on sunday and monday. right now i'm keeping it dry. we will con to watch out for that saturday and sunday is looking dry for the time being. that means some more nice weather. if you've got some activities, lots of festivals going on this weekend. and as we said right there, it looks perfect. looks perfect. >> good to
