shortly after midnight. police say that those two suspects made their way into a home here on 100th avenue in glenn dale. inside the home were two residents, a man and a woman. there was some kind of a confrontation inside that home. shots were fired. the male resident was struck in the torso. he is listed in critical condition. police are not releasing many more details about what happened or whether anything was taken from the house, but they are continuing to look for those two suspects. reporting live in glendale, megan mcgrath, news 4. aaron, back to you. today family and friends will remember a popular soft bail coach and die hard ravens fan killed at the navy yard. a viewing held for mike ridgell from 3:00 to 5:00 and again 7:00 to 9:00 tonight at the singleton funeral home in glen burnie. 592-year-old was a former maryland state trooper and the security guard aaron alexis

encountered. ridgell's funeral is tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. and we're trying to find out who has the body of gunman aaron alexis. the d.c. medical examiner says an youautopsy has been complete and his body released, but they will not say who claimed the body or what they discovered in the autopsy. the 34-year-old government contractor was shot to it death while exchanging gunfire with officers. he believed electromagnetic waves had been controlling him for months. a chemical weapons watchdog will decide today whether it approves of a u.n. security resolution to secure and destroy syria's chemical weapons. the organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons will meet and vote at the hague. they force syria to have full access to its chemical weapons stockpile. it does not threaten military action if they do not comply. melissa mollet is at the live

desk with breaking news out of india. right now the death toll is rising in a mumbai building collapse. three people now have been killed and it's believed that up to 90 could still be trapped. you can see the huge amount of concrete just tumbled on all of those people on the scene trying to help out. according to eyewitnesses that building was in dire need of repair. more are than a dozen people have been pulled out including, we understand, two young children. this building, an apartment building, five stories high, in the city's financial district. at the live desk, melissa mollet, news 4. we should get a better sense how likely a government shutdown really is. we expect the senate to vote to remove a provision from a government funding bill that would defund the affordable care act. john boehner says he and his colleagues will not accept any legislation that doesn't take away money from the controversial health care law. congress must reach a deal on a spending bill by the end of monday or part of the government will shut down. the controversial event had a is putting an unwanted spotlight on one of america's most iconic battlefields. also ahead, frightening video as

friends a dozen times over the past decade. the practice is known as loveit as in gathering information on love interests. they have two open investigation into new allegations. panama wants to fine a ship $1 million for trying to smuggle cuban weapons through the panama canal. the administrator says the fine covers the money the country has spent detaining that ship. it was seized in july after a standoff with the north korea crew. they said it was a donation of sugar to the north koreans. panamanian police found the sugar america's

lot. when he went back into the restaurant thinking his gun would work, it wouldn't fire again. joseph was arrested shortly after he left the diner the second time. a dangerous combination of speed and alcohol led orlando police on an overnight hi high-speed chase. police dash cam caught a blue prius on two wheels narrowly missing a cruiser while going backwards. the driver was running from a dui stop after giving police a fake i.d. with a top speed of 100 miles per hour. the driver was eventually stopped when he slammed in a another vehicle. he was ejected from the car and flown to the hospital where he remains in critical condition. at 5:18 a former nfl player sa hundreds of people may soon face charges for trashing his vacation home. police arrested six people who they say broke into brian holloway's home near albany, new york, and threw a massive labor day party. he says one of those people charged was a young man he took care of when he was homeless. he claims that guy organized the

party. holloway posted pictures on social media sites and that angered some of the teens' parents. a huge dust storm swept through parts of southern arizona causing multiple car crashes and huge backups, too. take a look at this video. a 14-mile section near phoenix was closed due to blowing dust. nobody was serious ly hurt in ay of those accidents. right now crews are trying to restore power to a busy train track just outside of new york city as commuters prepare for a second morning of really slow goi going. the busy stretch of traffic from manhattan and new haven has been mostly out of service since wednesday because of a power outage allowing only a fraction of trains to operate. the metro north line transports tens of thousands of riders each day, many of whom have had to find a different way to get around. our nbc station in new haven says limited power could be restored by this weekend. this morning we are getting a look at a massive meteor crash site in alberta, canada.

the right to get by. over to i-66. earlier this morning, for folks traveling eastbound at route 29 in gainesville, had a report of an accident there. 66 inbound still nice and clear. inside, same deal. i'm back in ten minutes. aaron and eun, back over to you. this morning two farmers face a year in prison for their role in a deadly listeria outbreak. eric and ryan general son operated the cantaloupe farm. cantaloupe was directly link ed to an outbreak of listeria back in 2011 but killed 3 people and made nearly 150 others sick. the fda and the dc say things like contaminated equipment and dirty water likely contributed to that outbreak. doctors expect former astronaut scott carpenter to make a full recovery from his stroke. nbc news learned he suffered the stroke in colorado. the 88-year-old is now in a

denver hospital. carpenter and john glenn are the last living members of the mercury 7 which was nasa's first group of astronauts. the latest advancement in helping stroke patients recover is not a drug. it's an app. hospitals are using ipads to help patients learn to speak again. they helped design appss that help with cognitive therapy. the tablets allow patients to continue their treatment at home as well. an arizona child was given a big honor for saving his mother's life. 3-year-old guy richy was given a certificate of appreciation. earlier this month 3-year-old guy was playing with his mom when she had a seizure. he picked up the phone and called 911. police rushed to their home and took her to the hospital. >> i don't even know what happened. the next thing i knew is when i came to. and this room was filled with paramedics and firefighters and policemen. >> little guy was also given a

money for so-called obama care, once they strip that provision out, that's something the house is likely to reject as we take a look at capitol hill. lots going on today. but not necessarily moving toward a resolution on this. the house has already decided to work overtime. john boehner saying democrats and republicans will be there saturday and sunday working over the weekend to try to work this out. they have a deep disagreement with the senate on how to fund the government. if they can't work it out by midnight monday, that is the deadline for the shutdown. now just over three days away as of tonight. overnight they actually, the senate, actually tried to early up this vote to provide more time for negotiating over the weekend, but two people objected. ted cruz and his colleague mike lee. they were criticized saying that they had people that were wanting to watch this on tv

completely safe before they gave the all clear. the buildings surrounding the area were evacuated while officials investigated. this afternoon family and friends will attend the funeral for prince william county high school student. 18-year-old kenny diaz's service set for 1:00 in woodbridge. 12 people now under arrest in connection with this murder. police just charged four of diaz's friends with attempted robbery. investigators say diaz and his friends tried to rob 19-year-old diandra sam ooumuels as payback all connected to drug deals. they believe samuels stabbed diaz to death in a park on saturday. eight teens recovering after being hit by a car driven by one of their classmates. it all went down yesterday afternoon at northwestern high school. eight junior rotc students were in formation when the car plowed into them. the driver of the car was a 19-year-old classmate. the driver stayed on the scene and was charged with negligent driving and without required supervision.

he doesn't have a license yet. just a learner's permit. d.c.'s fire chief will not face charges after being accused of attacking a firefighter. prosecutors say they don't have enough evidence to charge chief kenneth ellerbe. a firefighter told police he grabbed a phone from his hand and hurt him at the scene of a burning ambulance last month. ellerbe says he simply asked for the phone and got it voluntarily. george washington will finally have a presidential library. hundreds of people will be at mt. vernon for the grand opening today. the 45,000-square-foot the facility will include letters and manuscripts of our first president. his personal diary will even be there. the library will include a residence for visiting scholars. honoring some of the heroes after the mass shooting at the navy yard. the special event planned for this morning for a number of our area's first responders. plus -- putting crash prevention technology to the test.

meet libby. this tabby kitten has seen a lot of action. people at the adult recreation center heard her meowing for four days but couldn't figure out where those meows were coming from. turns out that libby was stuck in the ceiling. she somehow wedged herself between one of the ceiling tiles and a pipe, poor thing. the humane society workers were able to free her. this morning the 1 pound kitten is doing just fine. i imagine she will find a good home quickly. 5:41 just about now on this friday morning. and we are hoping for another beautiful -- for the beautiful weather to continue through the weekend. meteorologist tom kierein with more on what you can expect on your forecast. tom? is. >> our dry pattern continues. good morning on this friday morning.

place at about 9:00 a.m. over at the training facility in southwest. more than 30 paramedics and firefighters are scheduled to get this award, those who responded to the incident here at the navy yard back on the 16th. this is the medal of excellence and it goes to those who display extraordinary courage in response to an incident. this comes as questions arose in the immediate wake of this incident regarding stachg shortages and communication. it serves to highlight the valor of those who did respond, who were on the ground and who, despite whatever adversity did exist, nonetheless, did their jobs under those unusual circumstances and it's an interesting point just a few weeks ago d.c.'s police chief was at the tomb of the unknowns laying a wreath there to sort of highlight the relationship between the police department and the military district of washington. well, this this today, that incident and this award today also serve to highlight the fire and ems departments

mollet, news 4. this morning a mother is demanding answerses after she says her son was lost for an hour after school. shannon muller's 5-year-old son attends class at mt. rainier. she says a substitute teacher put her son, marcus, on a school bus to go home instead of his daycare van on tuesday. marcus was dropped off on a busy corner of 34th street and rhode island avenue. he wandered for a little while until he knocked on a stranger's door asking for help to call his dad. >> and just to get a call that, you know, telephones an emergency, that they can't find my 5-year-old son. >> moller says the school sent home withdrawal papers for marcus and his brother. she says the school always knew the children were not technically in the right school for their zone but that wasn't a problem until now. we contacted prince george's county public schools. we're told they're looking into the situation. d.c. police are working an undercover investigation to catch three men they suspect are connected to a string of robberies in northwest.

in a matter of hours police say the armed trio stole $300 and a cell phone from two people near the convention center. shortly after that and only four blocks away, a man was attacked in an alley and two men stole his wallet. police believe the same people caused both attacks and had increa increased patrols in the neighborhood. terry mcauliffe has picked up a key endorsement. the fairfax chamber of commerce backing him now. its president says mcauliffe's support for the transportation funding bill played a major role in the organization's decision. the chamber of commerce commended him for vowing to veto any attempt to end virginia's right-to-work laws. >> march 23, 2010, obama care is signed into law. minutes later attorney general ken cuccinelli filed suit in federal court to stop it. >> you may see this commercial on tv in the coming days. ken cuccinelli's campaign just launched that ad which criticizes terry mcauliffe for

north of the dulles toll road opened last november. you can give your feedback by going to 4 495expresslanes.com/ideas. rerouting a daily commute into maryland because of a bridge near east and west beach drive sustained serious watt thor damage over the past couple of years and needs to be fixed. residents aren't happy about the possible road work saying closing the roadway is a safety risk and will disrupt daily life. ddot is slowly blocking off to help with the weight distribution on the brimming but more permanent work needs to be done. >> the cracks are growing a little bit wider. it's not that it's unsafe but as a precautionary measure we're moving the weight of the traffic from the areas where the cracking is growing to the more secure part of the culvert. >> ddot says it is very close to awarding a contract to make a permanent fix. once work on the bridge officially starts, traffic will be diverted into montgomery county.
